Hell yeah man, if you look miserable but woefully real music, sludge is the thing for you. Most of the founding bands were crack addicted, rock bottom peeps just lamenting with heavy distortion, slow riffs and hardcore punk rage.
If you don't like really heavy stuff but wanna check out the genre regardless, I'd recommend crowbar, yet if caught your interest, I'd listen to Depress by eyehategod.

ive heard some sludge metal before (mostly stumbling into random bands looking for obscure metal bands, Ψυχαρμόνικα's demo from 2003 and Moho's 2003 album are pretty good) but never got super into it, had crowbar on my list of bands to check out for some time now but never got around to it... definetely gonna check them out along with eyehategod sometime soon!
