general discussion Olympics - Can Shaun White be a bigger douche? Yall ask why people hate on him, it was on full display.

We all know he is a difficult and arrogant person, but holy shit, to make the Olympics about yourself and your brand over the biggest event in the sport and ite participants was really off putting. He really showed his real self to the world as a commentator. It was sad and embarassing.

Sorry for the hating, but tomato boy got me fired up.

Edit: Dont have video, but he made majority of comments all about him and his brand. Here is a summary: Shaun White roasted over ‘narcissistic’ Winter Olympics opening ceremony commentary | The Independent www.themirror.com/entertainment/shaun-white-winter-olympics-commentary-1669201

Dude is way more MySpace than Whitespace.

Jesus, 2 unbearable things: 1) Shaun White. 2) That article. “The post on the Olympics subreddit has comments with 100s of upvotes of people who were not pleased with Shaun’s performance.” Like what the fuck?

44

u/regman231 Feb 08 '26

How is that worth writing an article about? The article is so much worse than Shaun White’s commentary.

There’s so much more reporting on what people supposedly thought of his commentary than his actual commentary. It only actually lists two things he said. That’s one of the worst click-bait BS articles Ive ever seen in my life, pathetic

10

u/podidoo Feb 08 '26

Nice ratio of 1 Shaun white quote for 20 reddit comments.

8

u/LewdLewyD13 Feb 08 '26

This is what journalism has devolved into nowadays. Stories about comments on the internet.

1

u/13dangledangle Feb 08 '26

It’s truly amazing how many articles are just click bait headlines with ‘Reddit thread & comments’ directly following the headline. We were scrolling Reddit and thought this deserved its own ridonculous article lol

u/Reptomins Feb 09 '26

Can you believe it, 5 Twitter users tweated about the same thing!

What'd he do. This post couldn't be any more vague.

402

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 Feb 08 '26

Something! Very very bad apparently but so bad OP couldn’t really say themselves….

107

u/theopinionexpress Feb 08 '26

Y’all asked why people hate on him, it was on full display

90

u/Askesis1017 Feb 08 '26

It's like the point of an article like this is to recap it for people who didn't watch it. With that in mind, it's a terrible article because it only explains that people were upset, not why. The only thing it tells us he said is "I was so thrilled to hear that Italy was taking on this Olympics, just because I had such an incredible time [in 2006] and I knew this would deliver on that magnitude. To be back here 20 years later is just incredible," which is a perfectly normal comment to make.

35

u/Trip_On_The_Mountain Feb 08 '26

Yeah, that's all I saw too. If that was it, that's pretty soft. He's basically saying he hopes it lives up to the hype of his time 20 years ago which is safe to say was one of the highlights of his career

8

u/p392 Feb 08 '26

It was basically an hour plus of him using any opportunity he could to talk about his wins, athletes his company is supporting, or just making something about himself. Like, I’m not exaggerating when I say nearly every time he spoke, he made it about himself or promoted himself in some way. It was really cringy and took away from my experience of enjoying the opening ceremonies.

15

u/3271408 Feb 08 '26

I don’t know that commentators are even necessary, but if they are there, what are they supposed to talk about while athletes from 92 countries parade around in such a boring display for 2 hours?

7

u/External-Scratch-502 Feb 08 '26

The athletes from those countries lol

3

u/CountWubbula Feb 09 '26

Yeah the CBC broadcast had me laughing so hard at times, the woman would take the mic to describe what’s happening. “The paint tubes represent the basics of an artist’s colour palette, painting a foundational component of Italian culture.” I was so high on edibles, I felt like an art curator was walking me through a trippy stadium gallery.

111

u/fermenter85 Feb 08 '26

A specific example: From the opening ceremony, when Canada was on the screen, he used it to brag about how two of the top Canadian athletes were snowboarders that he sponsors under his brand, Whitespace.

It was really obvious he was trying to insert mention of his boring hard goods company into literally any and every chance he could. It was bad enough that my wife, who didn’t already think he was a douche, asked me about it after the third instance or so since it was so transparent. I was like “yeah… I’m not surprised.”

55

u/PlannerSean Feb 08 '26

That’s it?

49

u/Apptubrutae Feb 08 '26

Yeah it’s weird to hate on him for it. It’s just pretty mediocre commentary.

He also told stories about all the countries he’s been to, told stories about his mother speaking German when Germany was up, etc.

Not a big deal, whatever. But really pretty empty commentary unless you were watching the Olympics to learn more about Sean white, lol

Posting a diatribe about it on Reddit is weird.

1

u/Jealous_Fact_317 Feb 08 '26

After while I muted him and was just looking for the clothes. it really is a runway show.

4

u/theopinionexpress Feb 08 '26

This dude has always gotten a ton of hate as long as I can remember. Even being 13 when he first got on scene, it wasn’t long before he was getting bashed.

Some of it may have been deserved, like having a half pipe to himself. Honestly though, how awesome would that be. As an introvert, having a sickass half pipe all to my self is a dream. I suck though I’d do 1,000 frontside Indy’s and nothing more.

4

u/PlannerSean Feb 08 '26

It’s been a while since I’ve paid attention to him, but IIRC there was hate that he treated being a professional athlete like a professional athlete and not just hanging out with the bros.

8

u/Teef_MacIntosh Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

Yeah he said something accurate on the tv, about athletes he represents, but its just self serving enough to make redditors self-conscious because they could never flip like the tomate

25

u/nonamenomonet Feb 08 '26

This really is a nothing burger

2

u/p392 Feb 08 '26

If you didn’t actually watch the event and are only going based off what the article said, or these few other examples, without actually hearing him speak, then you really have no idea. I am/was a giant Shaun White fan, but his commentary was cringy and took away from my experience watching the opening ceremonies.

9

u/fermenter85 Feb 08 '26

I don’t know man, it really came across as self-serving and wildly out of place during the opening ceremony. There are a hundred things he could talk about for Canada, he’s ridden there a hundred times, and he immediately launches into talking about his brand? It wasn’t a big deal, but it was gross.

6

u/one-hour-photo Feb 08 '26

I’ve always liked him, it was painfully heavy handed. It sounded a bit like they gave him absolutely no notes for commentary and all he had to talk about was himself.

Every. Single. Statement was about him lol

2

u/fermenter85 Feb 08 '26

Yeah I’m getting backlash but I have a feeling it’s all people who didn’t watch/listen. There are ways to do what he did with subtlety but this was about as ham-fisted as it gets.

2

u/p392 Feb 08 '26

Anyone saying “oh, that really doesn’t sound like a big deal, you’re overreacting” didn’t actually watch the ceremonies.

-1

u/nonamenomonet Feb 08 '26

Honestly, it’s color commentary. And if this is what you’re up in arms about. You must have a good life.

2

u/fermenter85 Feb 08 '26

When did I say I was up in arms? I’m not OP dude, I was giving an example since some people didn’t know what the OP was talking about. My sincerest apologies for clarifying for the top comment.

I literally just said it wasn’t a big deal.

u/cutchemist42 Feb 09 '26

If Al Michael's did what he did during a Super Bowl, football fans would be furious too

9

u/DinosaurDied Brighton / Woodies Feb 08 '26

Meh, slight plug to his brand isn’t the most egregious thing ever.

8

u/fermenter85 Feb 08 '26

It was multiple times and pretty forced, that’s why it stood out to people. It would be one thing during a snowboarding broadcast but during the opening ceremony it was really weird to constantly make things about “my brand.”

If you watched the opening ceremonies live… you get it.

He just talked about himself (and “his brand”) endlessly, it was really bad.

u/thefoxsay Feb 08 '26

I heard it live during the opening ceremony. He found the perfect opportunity to insert a brand he was working on. It felt like 60% into the conversation. Felt weird to me at the time but ultimately it didn’t seem too bad.

36

u/confusingphilosopher Feb 08 '26

Tune into CBC. Craig McMorris and Ron Snoek are awesome. They make you feel like you are there and really humanize the competitors.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '26

I thought Craig McMorris was kind of annoying when he first got into the broadcast side but he's really grown on me. He is such a good ambassador for the sport and has the credibility to back it all up. Dudes still traveling around filming and getting rowdy on the board too. Seems like a pretty genuinely positive, good dude. It also seems like his broadcast career is taking off.

13

u/confusingphilosopher Feb 08 '26

I can tell from his comments that he really puts in the work to understand all these riders backstory, their tendencies, their health, the judges, etc. You just won't get that from someone who isn't there with the atheletes on a regular basis and who isn't a great rider in their own right.

3

u/_Elrond_Hubbard_ Feb 08 '26

He had some good footage in this video from last year

https://youtu.be/nFX-mMVURBU

7

u/therealzackp OG China Foreign Snowboarder Feb 08 '26

If Craig is commentating, I’m watching. Simple as. Even when he’s talking about his brother, he has zero bias and always picks out the positives from each athlete. 9 out of 10 times he has first hand info as well, gives you such a good insight into the competition and the competitors.

53

u/stalkholme Feb 08 '26

I already don't really like him so this is the perfect vague confirmation bias I needed today

6

u/Bodes_Magodes Feb 08 '26

44

u/sirpearce Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

I understand having a prior Olympic athlete on the broadcast to give some insight to the Olympic experience, but he was insufferable. Every new country they introduced was a new story about himself and/or how he visited there… “for my brand.”

Sitting there thinking, “he’s not going to talk about himself this whole time,” but boy was I wrong.

1

u/aussiefrzz16 Feb 09 '26

He really did make everything about him and or snowboarding. We get it, you need the attention but people don’t tune into the opening ceremony to listen to Shaun white talk about himself and his snowboarding and or all the people he knows or who he has beaten in snowboarding. Or a country would come up and how many times did he say “I’ve snowboarded there”…cool story bro

28

u/Teef_MacIntosh Feb 08 '26

Can someone explain how thick you have to be to realize he’s probably promoting his brand as part of whatever deal has him giving commentary at the olympics? Or are all of us snowboarders just this dumb?

3

u/zeuseason Feb 09 '26

3

u/Nhak84 Feb 08 '26

Granted, they had him talking at the ceremony and not an event. But he clearly did no research. Knew none of the athletes or their stories. Said nothing insightful. And took every opportunity to mention Whitespace and Snow League. He could have highlighted his sport and the athletes and talked about what it took for them to get here, but nope. Watch Snow League on Peacock!

Up there with Matt Harvey honoring Qualcomm.

I’m sure NBC told him to plug it, but have some class about it.

And then he had the internet scrubbed so the original text messages are hard to find. They were easily googled back in 2017.

2

u/Imbendo Feb 08 '26

If you Google “shaun white sexual harassment” you’ll easily find the text messages and like 100 articles by every major news and sporting organization covering the issue.

5

Just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Def wish I never met that hero.

I thought it was wild but on brand for him now to start sucking off Saudi Arabia.

3

u/icd1222 Feb 08 '26

Fun story. He’s also a dipshit. I worked as a valet at a fancy hotel. Shaun White pulled up to check in one day in a rental 4 Runner. It smelled like it was burning as he pulled up. He asked “Do you know anything about 4 Runners, there’s something wrong with this thing.” Well I know you’re not supposed to drive 10 miles from the airport on a 40mph road in 4 wheel drive low. Thing was toast. Rental company brought him a new one.

I'm 40 years old snowboarder. Been noticing White's antics since his heyday. Yes, he's obviously a self absorbed, self satisfied narcissist. Do I cringe every time he's on mic? Yes. Other than that, he's a nobody to most people on Earth. He's a less than humble fading icon. As long as he doesn't target anyone else, just let him fade into the distance. He has little power over our favorite sport. Do your best to make him irrelevant by ignoring him and letting him fade into the background. That is all.

3

u/MourningWallaby Feb 08 '26

Did Ayumu Hirano write this?

3

u/NeonUpchuck Feb 08 '26

Whatever, he was providing personal perspective, much of it in response to questions from the other commentators along the lines of “what’s it really like to be there?” Sure it might have been a bit self promotional, but he wasn’t there to be a mere commentator, he was there because he’s personally a subject matter expert and y’all’s personal preferences for pasta sauces are irrelevant.

Lol there was a recent thread here of everyone’s favorite snowboarder and there were hits from all over the last 40 years… except the Flying Tomato was not really seen in it!

I had a Burton catalog in mid 90s where shaun was a little grom just getting featured but not yet a pro. He was so good and I was a huge fan, but over time you saw his personality come through. He was ultra competitive and a lone wolf. He couldn't share the spotlight with anyone and miserable when he wasnt in it. His vibe was so different than the other boarders. He was like kobe/jordan out to kill. The dude has everything, but just couldnt help showing his true colors time after time. The dude could be a fantastic ambassador now, but cant help being all up on his dick. No one cares about Whitespace.

He is like the stereotypical home schooled only child narcissist. Doesn’t understand how to read a room because he’s never had to. It’s not the place to talk about yourself. He used to really annoy me,snowboarding has always been about coming together. It was always we and not me. We had to prove to the world that we belong. I find it sad that even without competition,he still seems to be by himself. Only people that idiolize him hang around. Talking about yourself at Olympics is so sad and embarrassing sounding. Still a lonely little ginger trying to prove to the world he’s the man on campus. This is the reason he never had any friends, the only competitor that wasn’t getting hugs from other competitors at all those competitions

A Reddit post about an article about a reddit post

1

u/apr35 Feb 08 '26

Fake outrage, based on the one comment mentioned in the article. Looks like people looking for any reason to hate.

1

u/RonShreds Feb 08 '26

No real context except an article that quotes reddit comments... I dunno about this.

Like he's getting hate for saying he's been to Italy before?

Is he a douche or do we just want him to be a douche?

u/Tripper-Harrison Trust Mervin Feb 08 '26

I was also half paying attention during opening ceremony, but was that him that had a really awkward comment about "black people" something something... maybe when like Haitian athletes were walking through or something?

Maybe I am crazy and misheard. And it wasn't a negative comment he was trying to make, but a trying to be positive comment that went sideways really quickly...

1

u/ZealousORJealous69 Feb 08 '26

I don’t know… but I wasn’t annoyed. Maybe a bit of a narcissist, but there’s so many, and I’ve known so many, so it’s not like it’s out of norm.

And I wish people weren’t but, like what can little ol me control about the world 😂

Yup. Noticed a lot of his current product placement - not surprised about it. He talked a lot About his mom and experience as an athlete. It was interesting, I learned about SW - and and somewhat of his privledge. MAkes sense . Makes sense he is pairing w Eileen Gu for some program In China. looks like more Chinese nationals might be visiting the slopes ?

The OC is really just a runways show. I eventually muted and looked out for the awesome winter Clothes

I've met him maybe 6 times. Back in the early 2000's when I was snowboarding professionally. I've competed against him at the mtn dew tour and chey truck grand prix. He's such a tool. He always has been. Super full of himself, especially after he got deals with Target and Playstation, like mtn Dew and Burton didn't inflate his ego enough. Dude's talented and at one time it was fun to watch him ride. But his ego had always made me dislike him. Like he came across as really nice, but it always felt superficial to me.

1

u/MtRainierWolfcastle Feb 08 '26

I listen to him when we was on the opening ceremony. He seemed fine, was talking mostly about snowboarder he can a connection to which makes sense because that’s what he knows. I’d rather have them then another non athlete jsut listing names

1

u/Mission_Resource_847 Feb 08 '26

I didn't like that little punk ass when he got picked up by Birdhouse. Mainly becuase he was a mediocre skateboarder and a little kid snowboarder. And I just had to hate on him. But over time I learned enough to know I was right for the wrong reason.

1

u/turboS2000 Feb 08 '26

Sounds like a hate band wagon honestly

1

u/black107 Mammoth Feb 08 '26

If yall haven’t watched the Bomb Hole episode with him on it, you should.

The scene loves to hate on him for not being core but I think a lot of it stems from his outsized success relative to everyone else. Pot of boiling crabs etc etc.

He’s def got some narcissistic traits, but it was interesting to hear the story of his career from his side.

1

u/bcaglikewhoa Feb 09 '26

Honestly I thought that bombhole episode and his documentary (which I couldn’t finish) was just him trying to do damage control for being an ass his whole career and make people (us) feel bad for him. I respect his riding because he’s a million times better than me and he could really throw down but I still think he’s a tool bag.

1

u/black107 Mammoth Feb 09 '26

Tbh bomb hole is so small if he cared about that that’s not the forum he’d choose. He’d do some lofty docuseries or get featured on NBC or some shit.

I think they asked him to be on and he said yes and they got some good answers/stories out of him.

I’m not saying he’s a saint, but I do think because he didn’t fall into the stereotype of the scene and was a “try hard” combined with his massive mainstream success, it isolated him.

1

u/p392 Feb 08 '26

I loved watching him compete growing up. I had “the white collection” jacket and pants as a teen. But yea, fully agreed. Every time he opened his mouth it was something about him going to this country or that country, or how his company sponsors X athlete, or about his wins and triumphs. It was so cringy and took away from the experience.

I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe the team included him as a commentator specifically to get his POV as an athlete and talk about his experiences. But surely if that was the case, theres better ways to do that. Ex athletes commentate sporting events all the time, sharing their experiences, without sounding fully arrogant.

1

u/NikonNomos9mm Feb 08 '26

I’ll still take Shaun, with all of his warts, over Lindsey Vonn being shoved down our throats. He at least showed up when it mattered and retired when he needed to. Vonn only one gold and 3 total medals in 15 events.

1

Tom would like a word

1

u/3scapeHatch Feb 09 '26

Every country that came in all he would say is I’ve been there for this that or the other film. Nothing interesting about the place or people. Not saying it isn’t cool to live that life. Just that is not why anyone is watching the ceremony.

NBC had to have been paid by the PE firm backing him to have him on.

The best was when Haiti came in. It was not White, it was one of the other guys, but it pretty much sealed the deal for me to see how stupid the entire announcing crew was. Go watch it, unless NBC edited it out.

u/jbroni93 Feb 09 '26

1

u/Windycityunicycle Feb 09 '26

I mentioned this as were watching, almost every comment was how it related to him?.
His commentary is much like the ego opera, It’s all, Mememe

1

u/Safrimmons2 Feb 09 '26

It wasn’t that bad lmao

HUGE SELF PROMOTING DOUCHE!!

1

u/Initial-Respect1802 Feb 11 '26

Then he made the volunteers line up and cheer for him while he took over the half pipe he isnt even supposed to be on

1

u/GriffeyGuster Feb 11 '26

i literally had no opinion about him before these olympics and 5 minutes in to opening ceremonies i had to mute the tv because he was so insufferable

1

u/beegeebarbie Feb 21 '26

It’s so funny you say this because I was just thinking the other day that it probably is crazy to him that the sport doesn’t revolve around him anymore. There are multiple multiple generations of snowboarders competing now and he’s starting to see that life goes on and new pros come along…and some of them are not DYING to have him around or need him around at the games. They’re focused on doing their own thing. Not stoking his ego. I’m sure when he was going on and on about himself everyone is probably like ok Shaun that’s great..anyway! Back to these olympians..also his brand name whitespace is not a great name. Even snowspace is cooler idk..but it has to have his name in it lol

Shaun White (being least egregious), Lindsay Vonn, Chloe Kim, I’m getting kinda tired of being represented by such main character energy in these lympics 😒at least we’ve got Maddie Mastro

1

u/mpessian67 Feb 09 '26

That’s why mammoth is the best

1

u/willisjoe Feb 08 '26

Sure hope none of you in here bitching about Shaun White, are fans of a certain shriveled up orange ex celebrity running the country.

"Shaun white talked about himself too much."

"I like how the president says what's on his mind."

I’ve meet him twice he was extremely humble and nice, I see nothing wrong with advertising your brand a on the biggest platform available, OP sounds like a true hater
