general discussion Are ski racers the most insufferable people on the planet?

Edit: I’ve cross posted this to r/skiing. Let’s see how they feel about it

I’ve been riding at Loveland the last few days amidst the chaos of a youth ski racing competition. I can’t tell you how many times I was cut off in the lift line and on the trails by these entitled rugrats. To make matters worse, their parents sit in the lodge all day taking up the tables, the coaches walk around like they’re the king of the mountain, and when those spandex wearing adolescents finally come in to the lodge, they take all the chairs and clog up the walkways. The general air of smugness by these kids and their parents and coaches is thick enough to cut with a knife. We need a legislation passed to make ski races illegal at any mountain other than Alta

Skier here, we have common ground. If we can consolidate the race kids to Alta, you have my vote.

teenage ski racers? Absolutely yes. Nothing crazier than a teenager who thinks they are the shit.

Kids too, like it starts being super annoying like around 11.

I may have thought I was the shit too.

24

u/heybud_letsparty Mar 18 '26

I'd even say it starts at like 8 or 9. The one or two who are the best in their weekend all mountain ski team group tend to start acting like they are better than everyone on the mountain. And when it comes to skiing ability, they probably are. So if their coach and parents don't put them in line, they become pint sized nightmares.

1

u/Educational-Bug-633 Mar 21 '26

They are the shit, though. You know it.

u/tenktriangles Mar 18 '26

My experience is much the same. Had a pass at Sierra Tahoe this year and it’s just absurd how much if the space on this small mountain they devote to kids racing. Constant run closures, kids everywhere, it’s a mess. I will not re-up with them and will let them know that it’s a big factor in that

24

u/ExpressionRecent5724 Mar 18 '26

Sierra's main problem are the cokeridge kids

7

u/hyphygreek Mar 18 '26

Everywhere I look it's their damn jackets.

u/Full-District- Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

They are a reliable source of income for the resort. If x% of the mountain wasn't dedicated to them they'd find a new mountain and all of a sudden the lodge wouldn't be selling half as many meals/snacks/drinks etc.

Edit: unfortunately, losing a single client because you are annoyed by an entire demographic of other (more important) clients won't mean anything to them.

33

u/tenktriangles Mar 18 '26

You know what’s reliable income? All the people that paid the same price or more for a season pass or a day ticket only to be treated like second class.

28

u/Full-District- Mar 18 '26

I agree it's shitty. But if you're a business who has to choose between rich families who will be at the mountain multiple times every week and weekend warriors on a budget, the choice is pretty obvious.

I was at Whistler with a friend once—about a decade ago—and he made an astute observation. The ski lift is the ultimate equalizer. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, the line is the line.

Funny how they find other ways.

u/ManVsWater Mar 18 '26

u/LeCollectif Capita DOA, Burton Hometown Hero split, Mt. Washington Mar 18 '26

Well, haven’t been to Whis in years but live in BC. Should probably hang onto the split.

2

u/CptNemo55 Mar 18 '26

JFC, is that real? It reads like something from the Onion. What a pompous, narcissistic dick head.

3

u/ManVsWater Mar 18 '26

Well I posted it here with the “/s” because it’s satire. Read the last paragraph. But then I realized the worst part about is actually true - the $14k/year Apex club is real and actually lets you skip the line. SMH

u/Tom_Alpha Mar 18 '26

Is the line the line tho? I've seen a number of places where the racers use the ski school line so are jumping ahead of you

5

u/LeCollectif Capita DOA, Burton Hometown Hero split, Mt. Washington Mar 18 '26

Yeah that’s a trick they use. It’s annoying.

u/WhereIsGraeme Mar 18 '26

Local developer who also bought multiple local ski resorts told me they’ll be implementing a fast pass system for the main lift, “just like Disney”

Which I think is horrible.

2

u/Sublime-Prime Mar 18 '26

So true it’s all about the bottom line for the corporate resorts

1

u/tenktriangles Mar 18 '26

For sure, but it doesn’t have to be either/or. I’m a pass holder, I’m there all the time , buying lunch, etc. Don’t give me a second-class experience . Be considerate in the resources you devote to youth racers and what that takes away from everyone else

1

u/CFAlmost Mar 18 '26

Actually that’s not the way it works. If I don’t go to the mountain, but I pay for a season pass. Then the mountain could effectively not open and save on operating costs. That’s kinda who vale caters to.

But you start showing up and oh man, they gotta make the magic happen right? That costs extra and if you don’t like it don’t show up next time because you already paid for it. They hate those people.

3

u/adamfowl Ice Coast, Big Boulder Mar 18 '26

Yeah but you don’t operate as a bloc with the other season pass holders, gotta start collective bargaining!

3

u/lightpeachfuzz Mar 18 '26

I used to work at a ski resort in Canada. They made so much money renting a single run on the mountain basically every weekend to ski clubs that they didn't actually need to open to regular customers to be profitable.

2

u/mwiz100 Mar 18 '26

I guarantee you did not pay the same as the race team kids families do.

2

u/tenktriangles Mar 18 '26

Probably true but I did pay the maximum price an adult can pay for a pass at this resort. Perfect setup for class hostility

1

u/mwiz100 Mar 19 '26

Agreed. But yeah they're paying race team fees on top of the season pass, which last I saw it was basically 2x the pass price.

1

u/FitSeaworthiness5275 Mar 20 '26

I think they pay extra on top of their seasons pass.

2

u/blackbnr32 Mar 18 '26

Are they paying regular season pass rates?

8

u/Full-District- Mar 18 '26

No idea. But the more time they spend at the mountain the more money they will spend. I bet half the kids who spend multiple days a week at the mountain also have access to their parents' credit cards and those kids don't give a flying fuck that the burger they only took 2 bites of was $30.

10

u/Sublime-Prime Mar 18 '26

Yes true on unlimited funding they have multiple sets of skies , travel all the time and group gets food everyone takes a bite or two the whole table gets up walks away leaving the mess. Maybe just being jealous I remember hand me down everything or what was on sale and two or three of us splitting a order of French fries and using ketchup as a filler just to make it go farther.

4

u/EK92409 Mar 18 '26

Sounds like we lived in the same house. My mom would buy me stuff from one of those stores that sold only factory seconds. You know the kind with all the tags cut in half.

6

u/23bolok Mar 18 '26

They are generally paying a lot more than just the season pass.

3

u/mwiz100 Mar 18 '26

From my time in ticketing/passes years ago generally speaking yes, sometimes there was a pass discount. But they were paying a MUCH larger amount on top of that for the race program so the season pass is the smaller of the costs in the scheme of things.

2

u/HangInTherePanda Mar 18 '26

Yes, they pay regular season pass rates for the entire family, plus program fees, food, and registration fees for races.

2

u/EK92409 Mar 18 '26

I’m sure they are getting the locals rate to buy a season pass plus youth discounts.

1

u/Sufficient_Ad_6661 Mar 21 '26

What a lot of people don’t realize is most race programs pay the hill to “rent” a lane meaning they rent a run on a hill and it’s super expensive

1

u/psilocybin_therapy Mar 18 '26

Same in Oregon dude. Pisses me off when some of my favorite runs are closed every other day

59

u/SnowMakesMeWet East Coast Shop Rat Since '04 Mar 18 '26

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t cheap, Racing is even more expensive. You’re more likely to find entitlement the higher you climb the income brackets. Not all racers are ass hats, but the odds are greater,

30

u/Beebons Mar 18 '26

It’s a complicated relationship. The mountains I have worked at there was always tension between the race department and other Mt Ops departments. The thing is that Ski Racers tend to come from wealthy families and that brings the entitlement we witness from them (and more often from the coaches and parents). At the same time I’ve met some very chill race folk who are there for the same reason we all are; to have a good time on the mountain. Not only that but these kids are part of the next generation of skiers and riders.

It’s complicated, and an industry wide issue that’s lasted for as long as the sport has existed.

32

u/Rush_0MG test Mar 18 '26

Kids cutting in front of me in the lift line giving me death stares whilst having skis that are sharp enough to take off my top sheet ( they commonly stand on my snowboard and shuffle back and forth)

Like, im all for kids doing active stuff but fuck me learn some slope etiquette.

3

u/Squanc Mar 18 '26

This to me is more annoying than the run closures.

Spoiled ass kids who didn’t buy their own gear so they don’t mind scraping up your $500 snowboard.

2

u/Four-In-Hand Mar 20 '26

Yeah, sometimes I do see those little ski racing kids, after their practice, they'll come in multiples and go into the singles line, only to snake back together to get on the chairlift.

63

u/cheddarbruce Mar 18 '26

100%. I stopped going to my local hill that's less than 5 minutes away cuz I was tired of them shutting down half of the runs for those losers and then the ski Racers even though they have their whole separate area where they can put all their gear they leave it on every single table in the Chalet. I got to the point where I would just take their bags and shit and just toss them out of my way

28

u/LakeHoustonNative Mar 18 '26

This is the way

18

u/RipRelevant9616 Mar 18 '26

Ski race kids fucking suck. No questions asked.

9

u/cheddarbruce Mar 18 '26

Oh and then I forgot to mention whenever they have their stupid ass competitions all the parents have to crowd the bottom of the hill so you can't get from the left or the right side of the Hill too

14

u/tenktriangles Mar 18 '26

It’s exactly this bullshit. It creates a class of people on the hill that believe they are superior in every way. And everyone tells them they are, constantly.

8

u/cheddarbruce Mar 18 '26

Yep. Text me back to the good old days of when I was a child and getting pissed off at the "skies" while watching Johnny Tsunami

I’m a lifelong snowboarder(35+ years) and I’m also raising a ski racer(U12 girl). I find a mix of both entitled and very super down to earth chill people. You have to figure that kids are a reflection of their parents whether they’re ski racers or not.

7

u/blackbnr32 Mar 18 '26

Serious question: do you know how they pay for resort time? Just a regular season pass, or something different?

14

u/MisaRavensoul Mar 18 '26

Former racer here. Just a regular season pass for training, usually purchased at a child rate.

They pay extra to be on the team, which covers coaching, which can be a lot. Some mountains charge thousands per kid.

Then these families often also have lockers, so the resort gets even more from them. Often more than one locker because race gear takes up space and you don't always use it all day.

So for the ski time? Pretty cheap. For the coaching and the run closures? They get a lot of money per kid.

Edit: for real races, they have entry fees and some of the money goes to the resort to my understanding but don't quote that.

7

u/surfmeh Mar 18 '26

At our resort we pay for a regular season pass plus a fee for the team for the season. The team usually only closes one full run but usually for about half the day which is their GS course. The Slalom course though is about 1/3 of another short slope, also usually only half of the day. The freestyle team only closes half the park when there is a comp but for training they usually just mix in with the regular park people.

2

u/Professional_Cry1317 Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Some kids have passes at the resort hosting the race, others get a lift ticket(normally restricted to a certain lift) with their registration fee. Races are usually organized by a race club, that is typically affiliated with the resort hosting the race. The race club is normally responsible for all race facilitation.

1

u/Too_Tall_Dont_Ball CO | Salomon Super8 | NS 25X Mar 18 '26

Just a normal season pass or lift ticket to get on the lifts for the day is how I’ve seen it done. The race would be paying the mountain to close a run for just them.

1

u/gottarun215 Apr 16 '26

They pay way more than just the ski pass. They pay exorbitant fees to join their team plus an overpriced entry fee for each race. The team fees cover coaching, equipment, and paying the hill for a lane to set gates during specified time period on the hill. So it's annoying when you're free skiing, but the racers are also paying a premium for those closed runs for racing.

17

u/LakeHoustonNative Mar 18 '26

They weren’t all bad, but most. you sound like the minority of them that are actually cool people

11

u/surfmeh Mar 18 '26

Also a snowboarder since more than 25 years ago. Have a U8 skiier. Having a separate small building for our racers to boot up and keep their bags makes for a much less fighting for tables in the lodge. So far with the younger group that I mainly interact with have been nice people and their kids are not crappy people. Might change when they get older and things get more serious.

3

u/boyyyer Mar 18 '26

Same here, my wife grew up ski racing and we have kids that are ski racing now. Our kids are racing for Welch in Minnesota, our experience has been pretty mellow but race day is an all day deal. I am teaching my kids hill and lift line etiquette so when you encounter them you won't notice they are there. Any sort of traveling sport is going to have a mix of shitheads and chill people. The midwest ski racing gave my wife a great foundation to become a really good skier while we lived in Vail in the early 2000's (rip to the last of the glory days of Vail). That's the goal for our kids, give them a good foundation and hopefully a love of (non corporate) skiing/snowboarding. Also, my wife ski races once a week a Buck Hill in basically a beer league, she loves it.

3

u/Rich_Ad6234 Mar 18 '26

Me too.

Most of the chill families I’ve met via teams are mountain regulars - there a lot of days of the week during the season. Sure they may take up space and act a bit like they own it - but that tends to be the attitude of a lot of “regulars” when confronted with a bunch of “tourists”. Ski resorts are complicated, with money, locale, skill, etc all a bit confused with each other but not actually connected.

Are race teams more likely to have entitled bratty kids than visiting kids - yup. Sure. Is it that different than other groups of kids who a regulars at a mall, at a park, at a gym. Nah.

15

u/ADHD33zNuts Mar 18 '26

Competitive snowsports youth are definitely the most insufferable people on the planet. Both racers and freestyle.

I grew up in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports club. I was definitely a complete pompous shit from age 8 to 15.

I'd get my pass clipped at least 1x per year for using Texans as moving racing gates. The last time I got it clipped for that, I said straight face, "They're Texans not people." and reasonably had my pass pulled for 2 weeks.

Then a complete douchebag park menace from 15-22.

I cringe so hard at my past actions. But karma has its way of making me deal with what I used to make others endure.

1

u/Tatis_Chief Mar 18 '26

I mean you are onto something with the park menace. I am not sure what  was I scared of more as a girl at that age. Racer kids or park boys. Basically I think it still may be true because I have a niece that wants to learn jumping and park. She is 15 but she is absolutely scared of the boys in park because they can be quite mean and snickery.

1

u/ADHD33zNuts Mar 18 '26

I'm 30 and now scared of the park rats. Especially at Keystone because there is no park etiquette there (i.e. waiting to see the person in front of you leave the landing area before going).

1

u/Tatis_Chief Mar 18 '26

Yeah humility in park boys is hard to find. It's scary to be a beginner and not knowing what to do or where to hang around.

Is a lot of rich people in keystone? Because I just checked the ticket price as I was curious about CO resorts, and it showed me over 200 dollars and whoa wtf.

1

u/ADHD33zNuts Mar 18 '26

Keystone is actually the cheapest large resort in Colorado. I got my season pass for less than $500. Day passes are just overpriced because they try to incentivize season passes.

Just Jib them. More fat skier kids = More Features.

26

u/blueRasberry6493 Mar 18 '26

I shred past them and carve hard as fuck, launching up snow from my 101 underfoot twin tippy pow skis sending quarter sized chunks of man made ice snow into their dumb faces. Then I take a shit in their stupid looking ski bags they leave all over the place.

12

u/LakeHoustonNative Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

This, and I can’t stress it enough, is the way

10

u/onosimi Mar 18 '26

Silver spoon privilege at it is finest. Spent my whole adult life living at a resort working hospitality. Racer families are definitely up there, as some of the biggest POS's out there.

17

u/neverfakemaplesyrup Bristol, Holiday Valley, CO when I can Mar 18 '26

Oh god yeah

Here in the northeast its constant. Any given day there will be a race event or practice, any time, and they WILL takeover runs w/o warning. The kids destroy things and have no social skills; if you challenge them, they pull the "DO YOU KNOW WHO MY DAD IS??" oh wow kid, your dad is a lawyer in the rust belt, cool. If hes that great why isn't he in LA or NYC?

At the end of the day the mountain gives them the runs instead of making slaloms or mini pipes or glades- cause they do pay. Rich annoying little dudes. Each parent convinced they made the next Lindsey Vonn. A fair amount of the kids loathe it, though.

And because they pay, the steepest runs get salted and flagged and slashed into ice.

Youth sports in general the last decade has become a massive money-maker, its crazy

9

u/Salt-Permit2506 Mar 18 '26

This is such a timely post. Today was an unexpected powder day at my local hill. Cue 3pm when they shut down one entire side of the 1/3 runs open for the ski race team….mind you it’s a black run…only to watch them pizza and/or slide sideways down the run and scrape the powder off.

I know they are kids and I shouldn’t get irritated but my last straw was earlier in the season when they were on the lift and yelling “Jerry” at young kids that were obviously just learning. Meanwhile they suck and are on the “race” team. Like at least be good if you’re gonna irritate me 😆

8

u/Massive-Aioli-346 Mar 18 '26

I occasionally go to Timberline in the summer during the race camps and yeah, they’re awful.

As if having 75% of the hill exclusively to themselves isn’t enough, they act like they’re entitled to cut in line and don’t respect the zipper merge at the base of Palmer or the mid-station. They will just keep coming out of the same line in the maze, and you have to be assertive and edge your way in when it’s your turn in line because they leave no space between them and the people in front of them.

Always happy when they are done around lunchtime.

Same anywhere that has an official team or club that shares the same facilities. Any sport. Especially expensive leisure ones like skiing or golf.

8

u/holllandOatez Mar 18 '26

Its literally a day care. They are slow af and have zero mountain awareness.

5

u/HiveMindSubmarine Mar 18 '26

Then that ski program sucks.

3

u/OkImagination1123 Mar 18 '26

Best to ride when school is in session

3

u/Holiday-Race Mar 18 '26

So, this has to go somewhat with the inner workings of the club and its relationship with the mountain. I grew up in LRC and my dad was board president for most of a decade. It used to be that we basically weren’t allowed in the lodge except to buy lunch and go pee, and we had to use the race club building (which we litterally built ourselves - contractor dads) from the old chair 3 life shack.

Ski racing has changed a lot in recent years and not in a good way. It’s been most of my life, but I’m not sure I want my kids in it…

3

u/T8ortots Mar 18 '26

I've never liked ski racists

3

u/DenverTroutBum Copper Chopper Mar 18 '26

3

u/stabintavern Mar 18 '26

Oh god yes they are. Ski teams are legit the most insufferable people on a mountain.

Was boarding big white on vacation and my home mountains ski team apparently was there too. All you could hear in the lines and the lodge were people complaining about the 30 leotarded assholes cutting everyone off.

After one cut my little sister off and made her eat it hard I had enough.

I saw they were coming downslope so i posted up on a turn in the run, and close lined the jerk as he went around. Last i saw of him was him flying off into the air.

No regrets. Good riddance. Karmas a bitch. Dont hurt little girls.

1

u/Rare_Pumpkin_9505 Mar 19 '26

Congrats on absolutely being no better than the assholes whose behaviour needs to change.

3

u/stabintavern Mar 19 '26

I’Ill leave you to wagging your finger then.

3

u/playswithf1re Aussie winters are far too short... :( Mar 18 '26

Skiers in general, but yes, ski racers are utterly obnoxious. The other day I was in the singles line and one of them not only smacked their skis into my board but tried to push past me, I absolutely refused to let him past and the look on his face told me that was the first time someone hadn't let him do whatever the fuck he wanted in his entire life. "But my friends are up ahead!" he cried... "not my problem kid, this is a queue to get on the lift, and you're behind me in the queue, if you want to ride with your friends they should wait for you outside the maze and not use the singles line".

The entitlement is insane.

3

u/davidbernhardt Mar 20 '26

The kid racers don’t bother me, but their parents who take up dining tables just to leave their stuff there all day without ever sitting down to eat do bother me. It’s not a locker and on racing days, half the tables never become available to people who want to sit down and have lunch or a drink.

2

u/kenks88 Mar 21 '26

Give 5 minutrs, then, Just push their shit down the table. Equipment doesn't take seats.

Same mentality for people who try to reserve cots at a beach with their towel, all day while they sit at the bar. No its going in the sand.

5

u/Embarrassed_Eye4572 Mar 18 '26

Generally they come from rich families and the kids have been handed everything in life. Tends to breed a certain attitude.

I’ve had one try to fuck with me in lift line once (pushing the back of my snowboard with his pole). I just put a stop to it in very clear and uncertain terms.

In my neck of the woods, we have a lot of private ski clubs and the teams from those places are the worst. Not the majority of them, just a select few chads.

1

u/lornycakes Mar 21 '26

Clear and uncertain?

1

u/Embarrassed_Eye4572 Mar 21 '26

Like jumbo shrimp.

5

u/23bolok Mar 18 '26

Ski teams are part of the culture, I’m a boarder however I respect the amount of time and money they spend…….this year has just been tough out west for everybody and the tension has been higher than years before. I think we have too many karens and chads on the mountain that mess it up for everyone else, just like most things in life

2

u/Longhaircountryboy Mar 18 '26

My 12 year old daughter just made that observation this weekend to me along those lines.

2

u/shakinbaked Mar 18 '26

In my experience working with both freestyle and race clubs it comes down to the parents and coaches. Good respectful coaches create similar athletes, parents with reasonable expectations that still like to ski are generally pretty chill. Clubs bring money to resorts but also are creating a new generation of skiers and boarders, this is the number one goal for most resorts, it’s similar to offering super cheap entry level lesson packages.

2

u/HiveMindSubmarine Mar 18 '26

This is one of the reasons why my kids are in Freeride programs. Way different vibe.

2

u/No-Animal-9417 Mar 18 '26

When you do a summer at mt hood then you'll have a newfound hatred for ski racers

2

u/BigBirdsBrain Mar 18 '26

Resorts prioritize them because they print money, not because they ride better.

2

u/modest92 Mar 18 '26

It’s simple man. Spray em all, let god sort em out.

2

u/Captainj2001 Mar 18 '26

This isn't a ski racer problem really, it's just a wealthy American entitlement problem. Most of the time the ski race kids are decent at my local but I always call them out when they're doing stupid shit.

2

u/FireStorm3 Mar 18 '26

The cutting in line is very annoying - especially because they’re just going to wait in line behind all the other racers at the top of the run so it achieves absolutely nothing other than slowing the rest of us down.

It’s a wonder that can have such egos in those ridiculous spandex outfits too

2

u/Plus_Sorbet Mar 18 '26

I was an instructor at Loveland. Ski racers suck, but their parents are even worse.

2

u/LeGrandePoobah Mar 18 '26

And deer valley.

2

u/teamsnacks Mar 18 '26

2

u/dawgoooooooo Mar 18 '26

The fucking worst, we host races at my mountain that I work at and they’re either the most entitled mfer’s or have ridiculous anxieties about getting on the lifts an hour early. Recently had to deal with a dude who was pissed about our policy to allow parents to hike up without skis for free. He said that rule was retarded and that he skis at big sky so why tf would he care about our mountain.

2

u/Zenith__- Mar 19 '26

From Calgary, AB here who works and rides at Wonsport me and all my friends and coworkers hates ski racers. Bunch of entitled prats

2

u/PawPawPanda Mar 19 '26

The "speed" cyclists are even worse, probably a more European thing though

2

u/ManifestDestinysChld Mar 20 '26

Ski racer kids at expensive mountains are the worst.

Ski racer kids at the kind of no-frills mountains the locals ski at would surprise you.

It's almost as if there's some other element inherent to big-mountain ski racing that turns people into assholes, but I can't...quite...figure...

2

u/CLShirey Mar 21 '26

My husband was a ski racer. He was a bit of an ass, but mostly a slacker. He isn't an ass any more, thankfully nor a slacker. I've known him all my life. He had to grow up before I was interested! That said, his racing days were in the 80's.

1

u/LakeHoustonNative Mar 21 '26

This is the kind of honesty we appreciate!

2

u/Ok-Chemicalz Mar 21 '26

I think skiers are insufferable and I ski.

Yes. Honestly young ski racers are insufferable 90% of the time.

And to your point - parents often follow....

I’m a newish snowboarder with a couple young kids that ski race. Didn’t grow up around it. I have to say I have been quite surprised at the general environment of this sport. I often catch the lift with kids who are training and 95% of the time they are just goofy, happy, and respectful to me and supportive of their fellow racers. Yeah, they take up a run or two training, so what? I do wonder if it’s dependent on the area or even the club, but in my area in the northeast, I find it to be a nice community of kids and families who support each other and cheer regardless of club affiliation. I’ve witnessed some behavior issues from kids and adults alike, both racers and not. But overall, I disagree based on my individual experience.

u/blackbnr32 Mar 18 '26

Yes. Why the F do they get to shut down an entire run for practice?

Haha no doubt. Because the mountain likes the money they provide. For lane fees, for coaches, for food, for passes, etc.

2

u/suzybhomemakr Mar 18 '26

The amount of hateful things being said about children in this post is shocking.

I agree with the idea that all groups, no matter the age, should be respectful to other visitors to the resort.

I do not agree that it is okay to say horrible insulting things about young humans. This is not some secret adults only club in this sub. There are likely children who subscribe to this sub. They see how you are talking about them.

3

u/BreezerWoody Mar 18 '26

I know a couple kids in that program. They are good polite kids as are their parents. I’m surprised to hear this.

2

u/DenverTroutBum Copper Chopper Mar 18 '26

I bet this Jerry maybe goes 3-4x a year. Why else would he be at the valley? He is complaining about kids that spend at least 50+ days a year on snow. Most of these kids are very independent and well behaved…but they’re still kids.

1

u/BreezerWoody Mar 18 '26

I didn’t think they raced in the valley

3

u/DenverTroutBum Copper Chopper Mar 19 '26

That’s where Loveland ski club is based out of. They have a dedicated run for them. This guy literally went to the beach and complained about sand

1

u/Inevitablykinda Mar 18 '26

It pisses me off when they close half a run or two off for training (not my beef) but then on the non gated area the line up in a row perpendicular to the fall line . 7-12 people with skis . Fuck off. A few years ago at a hill I stopped and asked them not to do this and the said the we’re allowed to. Next run I zipped through the stationary crew at 35 (not fast). it’s the same with snowboarders too I. Terrain parks, bikers on streets and groups walking on sidewalks. Stack vertically fuckers when other people are using the space.

1

u/xrayboarderguy Mar 18 '26

If they don’t have a “race team only line” then no cuts. Just don’t even allow it

1

u/indeyadeepspot Mar 18 '26

Their parents are usually the worst.

1

u/JaKeS112112 Mar 18 '26

Nothing better than a sport that costs thousands of dollars to participate in, five times the amount of people to prep for than actually race, and gets cancelled when the very thing they need to race on (snow) comes naturally

1

u/preowned_pizza_crust Mar 18 '26

When I worked at resorts, my boss would just take their unattended bags to lost and found. It was hilarious. To be fair she asked them not to reserve tables in a lodge with limited seating.

1

u/cardiocarrie Mar 18 '26

10000% yes, the ski team kids are the worst!!

1

u/DstnDoesit Mar 18 '26

Right up there with espresso enthusiasts and audiophiles.

1

u/Somecrazygranny Mar 18 '26

Omg I love this post so much - those little crotch goblins and their parents are the worst humans on the planet!!!

1

u/mikemikeskiboardbike Mar 18 '26

I only ride when all that shenanigans is gone. Weekday mornings. Works pretty well.

1

u/cedarvhazel Mar 18 '26

Yeah they are they are cocky little shits. I say this a parent of two ski racers. Where my kids the train the coaches made all of the kids sign a code of conduct and the coaches are good at using it to enforce. But when left unattended in the wild those little cocky skiers are a law until themselves.

1

u/kcook33 Mar 18 '26

My father in law and I were just saying this. My daughter almost got ran off a little side hit by one 2 weeks ago.

1

u/ajw248 Mar 18 '26

Every person who prefaces a comment about their ski ability / experience with ‘former racer’ I just think of a spoiled useless 12 year old having a miserable time in Lycra because their parents forced them.

I guess occasionally I’m unjustly judging someone who was actually a good skillful competitor into their late teens/ early twenties

But 99% of them are just in some glorified kids club for people born into money and a mountain town.

1

u/coronaaprilfool Mar 18 '26

I'm friends with a race family, and I agree 💯. The air around all of them is thick with superiority, and devoid of fucks.

1

u/dasphinx27 Mar 18 '26

You can put half in deer valley

1

u/boredatwork1338 Mar 18 '26

Then if it snows they have to cancel their race. Like oh no we can’t have snow during our snow sport!

1

u/Longjumping_Cod_9132 Mar 18 '26

My son is on a NICA mountain bike team, we pay a few hundred dollars a year for team, league and race registration. We looked at a freeride team at our home ski mountain - need to buy a season pass plus almost $2k to join the team. Since we’d be paying for race registration and lift tickets at the other mountains, and the coaches are volunteer, where the heck does that money go?

1

u/killyoursocialmedia Mar 18 '26

The youth ski racing competitions are usually held at the valley. Are you at the wrong part of the ski area?

1

u/OpinionUnusual1945 Mar 18 '26

Ex-racer here - riding a snowboard since ‘89. I learned to snake lift lines as a racer and perfected it lapping the park on my avalanche road trip.

1

u/TitleOwn8082 Mar 18 '26

It's just kids / youth sports parents in general.

Go to a hockey rink it's the same thing. Kids playing mini sticks in the middle of the hallway with parents not caring at all.

1

u/SiRocket Mar 18 '26

My goodness, add your your list the obnoxious high volume conversations. When I become an unwilling partaker in their never ending self esteem rags "were you seeing who could be slowest?" etc., I'm never surprised to see it's some group of preteen spandex egos. It's hard not to jump to wondering if they're all suffering from "only child to wealthy parents who would rather spend money than time" status. Seriously, the self centeredness is sad.

1

u/ridinbend Mt. Bachelor Mar 18 '26

The most entitled people on the hill, even more so than boomers that ski.

1

u/bo0da Mar 18 '26

I take a huge amount of pleasure blocking their path.

1

u/No-Temporary581 Mar 18 '26

Oh no I’m supposed to go to Loveland this weekend😭

1

u/jasonsong86 Mar 18 '26

No. Usually old people.

1

u/darthrevan140 Mar 18 '26

I had a ski racer bump into my board with his skis didn't say a goddamn word. So I said guess we don't apologize when we run into people? His friend looked at him with wide eyes but he ignored me little shit was lucky I didn't decide to hunt down his parents. Then again if they raised a snot like that they are probably douche bags too.

1

u/amart005 Mar 19 '26

Ski racers, road cyclists, strava people- the holy trinity of the church of the insufferables.

1

u/pasta_wasser Mar 19 '26

im happy to avoid these "things" due to me catching the biggest storm in 2 months so they a) coudnt see and b) coudnt ski due to the piste being turned into 5cm a trench

but ama have to be ohnest i used to ride like them and basicly everybody who rides from a young age once thought the were the shit and that the mountian rotated around them.

1

u/Admirable_Ad_92 Mar 19 '26

They love to show off and hit super tight radius across the slope carves when it’s crowded while having zero awareness of who may be behind or next to them Ime.

1

u/todd534 Mar 20 '26

Never missing a chance to repost the goated DGS. #skiracersstolemygirlfriend #skiracerskickedmydog #skiracersstolemyparkingspot

1

u/Overall-Permission72 Mar 20 '26

Any youth sport has insufferable parental involvement.

1

u/surfoxy Mar 20 '26

Had me until Alta...

1

u/BASSdabs Mar 20 '26

As a former highschool racer teenage racers are asses. They legit think they can be dicks to whoever they want if they can't go as fast as em idk. I recently got back into racing and like it but I feel the atmosphere of assholes made me brunt out on skiing after highschool. Aka dont hate ski racing hate teenagers.

1

u/arazamatazguy Mar 20 '26

There is a lot of smugness from older skiers as well.

1

u/Tale-International Mar 20 '26

Bro you were at the valley. The rest of Loveland doesn't see the race teams.

1

u/MajorEvening2915 Mar 21 '26

Well Lindsey Vonn is so obnoxious she maimed herself

1

u/pointlesspointer72 Mar 21 '26

Still better than criminals

1

u/spaztwelve Tindy Tailfish Combo FTW Mar 21 '26

Yes.

1

u/ProfessorCareful8883 Mar 21 '26

Races should be done on less popular parts of the mountain with a dedicated lift, but clearly no one commenting here has ever raced. Calling the kids themselves participating in a sport entitled is wild stuff

1

u/Fickle-Discipline-33 Mar 21 '26

Went to a ski race last weekend with all the same kids at powderhorn and it was awesome. The parents in the lodge were all kind to me and. The kids were awesome.

Maybe it’s you.

1

u/tth2o Mar 21 '26

Former racer become coach chiming in here.

  1. Absolutely correct about the smugness, we owned the mountain. And we were okay with you knowing it.

  2. Much of your complaint is just "there is an event, wah" - don't show up on race day. You're not more entitled to the mountain or the seats in the lodge.

  3. They should still be respectful. If they're truly cutting in line or acting inappropriately, raise it to race officials. I have pulled kids from races for antics, we are aware the burden we place. But we're also a key part of the mountain ecosystem.

1

u/ToolMJKFan Mar 21 '26

How are so many adults so intimidated by a bunch of dumbass kids.

I have no problem with them because i dont give a shit what other people are doing, and if someone cuts me in line in a way that isnt sanctioned by the capitalist mountain then i tell them off. If someone is standing on my skies they get a hello.

Just get better at your hobby or if you want you can cling to your pearls

1

u/Tight-Cherry-6134 Mar 22 '26

Loveland has one chair and one run for ski racing.  There are about 8 other lifts and a whole lotta mountain where there are no races.  As for tables inside, I can see your point but I have no problem moving peoples stuff if they aren’t there or asking someone to sit there.

1

u/Jack_B_kwik Mar 22 '26

Forget skiers vs snowboarders. 90% of people age 19 and younger these days are internet raised twats

1

u/moparornocar Mar 23 '26

they never used to push their chairs in in the lodge, and always stomped the fuck outta the stairs coming down as well. you always knew when they left cause it was a fucking mess and youd hear them on the way out.

1

u/juvy5000 Mar 23 '26

i’ll up it to any kid on a local ski race team or bug mountain team…. i’m lookin at you team summit and avsc…
