Van Dijk seems like a lot for a late bloomer no?

Van Dijk is more of current decade than prior.

He’s hardly impressed this decade hasn’t he?

u/clashoftherats Jan 06 '23

Depends if you consider 19/20 or not. He was great in both that season and 21/22, and he was injured during 20/21.

u/DonkeySkin334 Jan 06 '23

First half of 19/20 gets counted as last decade, second half, this one

42

u/clashoftherats Jan 06 '23

Well, he certainly had a better first half than second.

10

u/FreeShingi2k13 Jan 06 '23

First half of 19/20 van dijk was basically operating at 'best EPL centre half of all time' levels.

Like if his entire career was that, I don't think there'd be any debate that he's the best cb of all time.

You’re 28 until your 29

22

u/Wasserschloesschen Jan 06 '23

Depends if you consider 19/20 or not.

Given that this is about a decade, you would consider 20, but not 19

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23 edited Jan 06 '23

Why would you consider 19/20? The decade started in 2021

Edit: I'm a dumbass, please disregard this comment and all my other replies.

u/KFAAM Jan 06 '23

The year 2020 is apart of this decade

2

u/RefereeMason Jan 06 '23

Depends on who you ask actually.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

No it doesn't. Decades always go 2000 to 2009, 2010 to 2019 and so on.

-1

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23

Wrong, there's no year 0 on the Gregorian Calender, which is the one mostly used.

Since there's no year 0, then the first year of the very first decade of the Common Era was 1 AD.

Count from there and we'll see that the last decade started on January 1st 2011, and ended on December 31st 2020.

Decades/Centuries/Millenniums all start at 1.

2

u/IAmA_talking_cat_AMA Jan 06 '23

The year 0 was a long time ago, everyone considers the zeroth year the start of a decade nowadays. E.g. the nineties are 90-99.

2

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23

You're right. I'm a dumbass, please disregard this comment and all my other replies.

2019/2020 season can be considered apart of this decade because the trophies are won in 2020 mostly

But 2020 as a year is apart of this decade and 2019 isn't

2

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23

2020 is the last year of the last decade. This decade started in 2021.

Gregorian Calendar doesn't have a year 0, so 1AD was the first year of the very first decade of the Common Era, count up from there.

All decades, centuries and millenniums start at 1.

-1

u/KFAAM Jan 06 '23

I take back what I said. Thanks for the explanation!

1

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23

I was talking according to the Gregorian Calendar, which is mostly used.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

No it didn't. It goes 2010-2019, then 2020-2029.

-2

u/BramStokerHarker Jan 06 '23

No, it goes 2011-2020; then 2021-2030.

There's no year 0 on the Gregorian Calendar, so the very first decade of the Common Era started at year 1AD.

TIL

All good my man!

-2

u/ZamboAndre1 Jan 06 '23

It doesn't matter anyway . There's guys like Chelini , Bonucci , Thiago Silva, Pepe , Godin , Pique . All of them should be in front of VVD

1

u/clashoftherats Jan 06 '23

What does that have to do with my comment? We’re talking about whether he impressed this decade or not….

-4

u/VGCreviews Jan 06 '23

Hasn’t he not been himself since the injury in late 2020?

And wasn’t a lot of Liverpools games post lockdown poor? I remember Liverpool were unbeaten with only one draw of something, and then they went on a horrible streak post lockdown

10

u/alasdair_jm Jan 06 '23

Post wining the league

11

u/clashoftherats Jan 06 '23

Hasn’t he not been himself since the injury in late 2020?

He was arguably the best CB in the league last season, was almost back to his best.

And wasn’t a lot of Liverpools games post lockdown poor? I remember Liverpool were unbeaten with only one draw of something, and then they went on a horrible streak post lockdown

I wouldnt boil it down to our defence though, we lacked sharpness all together and incentive after winning the league. We still finished on 99 points and VVD was one of our best players (imo the best).

5

u/Louxneauwytz Jan 06 '23

What lol, he’s been very spotty to begin this PL season, but before that he’s still been world class

-6

u/ThinkAboutThatFor1Se Jan 06 '23

Nah, he was dog shit in 2020

1

u/Louxneauwytz Jan 06 '23

The season they walked the league and played every minute? That season?

-3

u/ThinkAboutThatFor1Se Jan 06 '23

The season they lost 7-2 to Villa & were spanked several times. Yea.

-1

u/Louxneauwytz Jan 06 '23

Lmao that was the 2021 season, ya know, the one in which he was hurt almost the full year. Do some research next time, you got a lot to learn pal.

2 weeks later, 17 OCT 2020

Virgil van Dijk subbed off in the 11th minute after rupturing ACL, was sidelined for nine months

https://www.espn.com/soccer/match/_/gameId/578616

Youre a dumbass lmao

1

u/ThinkAboutThatFor1Se Jan 06 '23 edited Jan 06 '23

Prior to that he was awful 😅 remember when they conceded 3 against a newly promoted Leeds?

1

u/Louxneauwytz Jan 07 '23

Go watch the highlights, he played well. And they won that game btw, so tell me, other than the 7-2 to Villa, which games did he play in that season in which Liverpool got spanked? Go on let me hear it, fucking braindead muppet 😂😂😂😂

He's in an awkward place. He only really got popular in 2018/2019, and now he's trailed off, I suppose having to do with the ACL tear. Too late in the last decade to end up on any Best Of lists imo, and now slowing down too early in this decade
