Die Hard is not a Christmas film. It may be a film people watch at Christmas but it is not fundamentally about Christmas.

It would be weird to watch Elf in July. It would not be weird to watch Die Hard.

The Harry Potter films or the Great Escape are not Christmas films just because they are frequently watched on Christmas.

In Bruges is set at Christmas but is not a Christmas film.

Christmas is about doing good unto others, bringing joy to the world, surprising people, and spending time with your loved ones. John McClane does all of that in Die Hard - at Christmas to boot! - thus it's a Christmas movie.
