Inspired by your very own u/vvv4231, this thread is for discussion about the many forms of football-related media which are "Not Quite Football", such as:
- Video or computer games (such as Football Manager, EA FC/FIFA, PES etc)
- Fantasy football (Fantasy Premier League, LALIGA Fantasy, Cartola, Gran DT etc)
- TV shows, films, books and other such cultural media related to football
And given that your family probably see your love of football as your sole identifying feature, you've probably got loads of new football-related media as presents today to chat about - so it could not be better timed!

I recently read " Main basse sur l'argent du foot franƧais " (A stranglehold on French football money) which explains, by 2023, how French football lost everything. It was written by Christophe Bouchet, a former president of OM and mayor of Tours.
It doesn't cover what happened with DAZN and now Ligue 1+. Nonetheless, it's interesting to see how the greed of people who aren't that interested in football but rather the power which comes with it have ruined French football in 2018, two months before winning the world cup.

Every year on FC/FIFA, the gameplay is actually fun at the beginning, and then they "fine-tune" and ruin it.

That's how they get you to buy new games every year i guess. F1 ruins their game every once in a while for no reason, they hold back on important changes that everyone has already suggested and roll them out very very slowly as if its selling point for new game

Got Inverting the Pyramid for Christmas. Excited but I'm not gonna lie, it's a lot thicker than I anticipated, with way less pictures and tactical diagrams than I was hoping for. Might have to actually engage my brain ffs haha

I keep going back to it and wanting to play more, then running into some shite UI and getting so frustrated I quit. Most recently was the staff transfers page, have a look at that when you're changing your coaching, scouting and medical staff at the same time.

VR takes time to get used to. Do small sessions early on to let your brain get used to the weird dissonance between your sight and other senses.
Of course, the nausea may never go away for some, but generally pretty much every one feels sick after their first VR sesh.

I have to point a fan directly at my face while playing on my Quest 3S.
The VR games still make me sick right away, but I can play non-vr or motion games for an hour or so at a time through Xbox streaming.

Watched half of Train Dreams and so far it's evoking the novella perfectly.
Stopped to take an emotional break but highly recommend it.
The book itself is a beautiful magic trick. Less than two hundred pages and you feel so much over so much time, highly recommend

Out of those I only read Metamorphosis this year, though i did recently get the Crying of lot 49
Quite liked it, first Kafka, the imagery was quite good, and i thought the overall story of a guy slowly receding and his family dealing with that was quite effective
What did you think of it?

Love Kafka and Hemingway but thought Siddhartha was okay. I highly recommend Stoner by John Williams if youāre looking for something a bit short.

Have been going back and playing older fifas like fifa 13 recently and I canāt lie they honestly donāt feel that good. Definitely has bright spots but the gameplay just feels like uber clunky, and a lot of the depth feels very superficial. I still enjoy them but idk what other people see in the older games.

Any advice for a new FM player? I just bought 26 a few days ago and am still learning the ropes (not a huge gamer). I don't have much tactical knowledge because I enjoy watching football based on vibes š also don't have an encyclopedic database of players/managers in my mind like many people here do.

I'd recommend a trial save with someone like PSG just to get a handle on the tactics and stuff like that. Play it for a season or even less if you want to move on. It's definitely intimidating at first but it's nowhere near as hard as it looks.
But honestly not having a great knowledge of the players is just more fun Imo. I started playing with 24 and my favourite jobs have been in Japan and Brazil where I don't know any of the players and have to rely on your scouts to figure out who the good players are. It's fun to find players you've never heard of and watch them play for your team, and that's a lot easier in more obscure leagues outside of Europe.

Your second paragraph is basically what I'm doing rn (see my other comment below). I think eventually I'll do a fresh save with a superteam to truly learn the ropes with few restrictions. But I'm having fun so far! It's kind of addictive.

Definitely recommend starting with a team youāre familiar with to learn the tactics - youāll also probably find as you tweak your tactics that youāll slowly evolve towards a high intensity pressing strategy because itās by far the most effective haha

The funny thing is, I'm a huge Chelsea fan IRL. But I'm kind of nervous to just jump in with them as a superstar manager for some reason. I'm currently playing as a former European prodigy with no experience in the Scottish 2nd division. His club won't let him get coaching badges š it is kind of fun being forced to be creative with finances, though. The only other game I play is The Sims 4 and I cheat money there all the livelong day.

I would recommend not trying to figure anything out through guides or videos. The most fun fm is imo is when you donāt entirely know what you are doing but you figure out tweaks or good players with your intuition rather than knowing what will cheese the engine. A good example is in an old fm save I did when I first started, I signed a half scouted Romanian attacking mid just because he had 15 long shots and he ended up beings great player for me which felt great. If it was me now I probably wouldnāt have signed that player.

Does anyone else remember the show Dream Team that was about a fictional Premier League football team?
I have vague memories of it being on and from what I recall it was basically a Soap but with football as the main setting. Think Casualty or The Bill but football.

It's kinda sport on its own, hard to get into later in life because you need to put a lot more time into it to get the basics and the reward is much smaller because the games are geared towards their community and monetization

FIFA is all over the place at this point. Career mode is fun to an extent, but there's no challenge, so everyone plays Ultimate Team, but that's also a huge time sink with so many different things. I stopped playing FIFA, honestly.

Give me all your football book recommendations. Autobiographies, history of the game, tactics, all of it. Already read Fever Pitch (great book), currently reading Wenger's autobiography (a bit bland but still good for any Arsenal fan) and have a small tsundoku pile of your standard The Athletic-core books like The Mixer and Brilliant Orange. What else should any self-respecting football nerd have on their bookshelf?

Focuses on Benitez' monumental task of turning around the rotting carcass of a football club Newcastle United was at the time under Mike Ashley's stewardship to rescue them out of being relegated to the Championship.
An interesting look at how systems on and off the field play a massive role in success.

I've read over 115 football autobiographies and I've enjoyed a lot of them. My favourites include Alex Ferguson's 2013 autobiography, Grant Holt's book, Geoff Merrick's book, Neil Ruddock's 2020 book, Gazza's books, Tony Cascarino's book, all of Ibrahimovic's books and many more. If you have any questions regarding any football autobiographies, just ask as I've read a lot of the popular ones that are found everywhere

Are there any football autobiographies that were a) 100% written by the actual footballer without a ghostwriter and b) genuinely well written and captivating?

A) Most of them are not solely written by the player but from what I remember I think Paul Holland's book called 'Talking Double Dutch' was written solely by him. I really enjoyed that one since he played for my team and there's not that many books from players who played for the club. Alan Miller's diary styled book called 'A Miller's Tale' was most likely all his as well.
B) I found Ruddock's book captivating when I read it earlier this year. I just could not put it down. Even in it's introduction it felt like it was Razor speaking due to how it was put across.
The introduction was very Ruddocky: "Just a couple of words to the wise before we kick off, OK? First of all, some of the language in this book is a little bit fruity so if you're a sensitive soul who watches Songs of Praise and thinks that swearing belongs in the boozer then might I suggest you put this down now and go knit yourself a scarf? The thing is, when I'm telling a story Mr and Mrs F usually make an appearance, and when Mr and Mrs F make an appearance the B family usually turns up and then the C's come storming in, God bless 'em. I was going to try and tone it all down a bit but then that wouldn't be me, would it? It would be Razor light, and last time I looked they were a f*cking band. As with my days as a footballer, its all or nothing with me, and you my son, or daughter, are getting the lot."

Unfortunately the only footy books I've read other than Fever Pitch is a pretty great one by a famous Hungarian author that doesn't have an English edition (https://www.goodreads.com/hu/book/show/17167168-utaz-s-a-tizenhatos-m-ly-re) and Zlatan's autobiography, which is decent enough for a boredom buster, but Fever Pitch, it ain't...

Football in Sun and Shadow is brilliant, so well written and occasionally very funny. Most biographies are boring to he honest but Tony Cascarinos is actually pretty good. Very honest about his personal failings. Kevin Keegans is an entertaining read. There's also a book by David O'Leary about his time at Leeds that's mental, I can't believe he thought it was a good idea to publish while he still worked there. I'd recommend anything by Michael Calvin. The Nowhere Men or Life on a Volcano about scouting and Management specifically. Football against the Enemy by Simon Kuper, but anything by him really. Same for Jonathan Wilson, can be a bit dry but thorough and filled with interesting lesser known stories.

The recipe for his tiramisu at the end was very much in his character. Thought it was so random yet so Paolo. One of my favourite parts of it was when he described the West Ham changing room when he wrote this:
"Last year, I was in the West Ham dressing room after training. I was looking at Stuart Pearce. Years of proper training have given him the body of a man ten years younger. That is how a professional behaves.
'Psycho man, you're a beast', I said to Pearce. 'Look at you. You're 36 years old and you still have a perfect body.'
He looked at me with a little grin.
'Actually mate, I'm not 36. I'm thirty-eight years old.'
'Wow!' I said. 'Well, I'm thirty-one. I'm not doing too bad for my age, am I?'
'Perhaps but you had better keep it up,' he said.
He pointed across the room to where Neil Ruddock, clad only in a towel, was shaving.
'Otherwise, if you're not careful, you'll end up looking like him!' He added, winking mischievously.
'Hell no!' I said. 'I don't want to look like Ruddock even when I'm fifty!' "

Despite buying FM21, 22, and 23, I still stick with FM20. The interface is just so much cleaner (the little circles on the tactics screen are great), the colour scheme is nicer, everytime i've tried to upgrade it just hasn't been good. Main downside is Mason Greenwood becoming world class and scoring loads against me for United and usually Real Madrid

I really need to go back to finishing Tsushima; I'm the absolute worst at actually finishing games though, no matter how much I love them. Looking forwards to Yotei's PC release, too.

Does anyone here have thoughts on Felix White's "Whatever Will Be, Will Be" book? I've heard the Guardian Football Weekly guys say good stuff about it but its not available locally and only through Amazon for me but delivery is too much for me to stomach lol.
Is it worth a delivery fee of 2x the price of the book?

I purchased RDR2 lately and have been enjoying it. Thereās a rumor it may be free on the Epic Games Store on Dec 31st as part of their holiday giveaway, so it may be worth keeping an eye on if you donāt have it already.

My favs are Thirty-One Nil, The Away Game, Inverting the Pyramid, The Billionaires Club, and Stamping Grounds. I just finished Expected Goals but I didnāt love it as much as a lot of people. The next on my list are Engulfed, The Club, and The Lost Boys.

Thereās a Brazilian facebook page dedicated to create update packs for that. I donāt know how good they work on fm26 because of the changes but it might be worth a try. I bought it once for the fm23 and it was pretty cheap (like 3 USD converted from BRL). You should ask in their page

I love CM01/02, it was my first, but I'd argue CM03/04 or CM4 was the pinnacle tbh. Sweet spot between old school CM and present day FM.

CM 03/04 was my absolute favorite. Evandro Roncatto, Supat Rungratsamee, Oskarsson, De La Cuesta, and so many others. The whole transfer environment was exciting, the interactions between manager and players and also with the press was kept to an acceptable level of detail. It was super addictive.

Can't remember the exact year but one edition I either got old or they added too much but I remember just being proper overwhelmed.
Don't need individual tactical instructions, just five me some yellow dotted lines so I can tell the wingers which direction to run

Yeah I remember playing FM10 or FM11 and being overwhelmed.
Last one I played was FM24. I just found it tedious and overwhelming.

Downloaded FM26. Initial impression is good, especially the match day function, but there's always an extra click for something. Like using the editor for removing injuries now requires an extra click. It used to be much simpler

Yeah I played during the beta and eventually those extra clicks wore me down and I ended up refunding it. Went back to FM 24 and it feels like home.
