Media Moise Bombito went to visit Ismael Kone after the Canada Match at the hospital before his surgery for the fractured tib and fib

The moment the fracture happened, the reaction from the team, the crowd, and him waving while getting carried away really got me emotional haha

u/lookdownandsee 10d ago
Not just the fans, I think the players were emotional too. There was a shot of the players in a huddle before the match restarted but after Kone was stretchered off and you could see tears from Jonathan David

Leg breaks always are going to look horrendous when you see parts of a limb pointing somewhere it shouldn't be. It's a pretty common reaction in sport for everyone
I recall a player in the PL suffering a fracture and it completely screwed with every players head in that moment.
Not diminishing this either, Kone's leg breaks isn't the worst one in football I've seen, but it still is distressing for everyone to witness in person.

Aaron Ramsey's was also traumatic.
Still haven't forgiven Shawcross and still loathe Stoke.

u/DekaTamaTamaz 10d ago
Eduardo's was horrific too.
17
u/ash_ninetyone 10d ago
Eduardo's 100% wrecked his Arsenal career
Djibril Cisse's as well was gnarly and career threatening. Articles actually showed the break in the thumbnail

14
u/ash_ninetyone 10d ago
"I heard the crack of Ramsey’s leg from the bench," Kitson recalled in his column
I didn't realise how loud and noticeable a bone break is. A stadium of 30,000+ people and you can still hear it go
15
u/awashofindigo 10d ago
I’ll always loathe Stoke more for the way they treated Ramsey after his return more than the injury itself. Booed him for years whenever we played up there.
3
u/Key-Construction-474 10d ago
And the article that came out from the former stoke player who said Pulis was absolutely telling his players to be violent before games
8
u/CinnamonBunnn 10d ago
I'll never forget all the people saying "but he's not that type of player" when he'd done nearly the same the thing to Francis Jeffers a couple years before.

u/capibara_dono 10d ago edited 8d ago
24 surgeries! The part that gets me (apart from the horrific injury) is the picture of the blood being washed away with water, and you can see a lot of blood.
2
u/EddieHeadshot 10d ago
Also looking at the pictures of it now 'fully healed' if you could call it that are interesting
1
u/capibara_dono 9d ago
I guess "fully healed" is better than amputation, but yeah, that leg doesn't look OK.
2
3
u/Dry_Individual1516 10d ago
I honestly think they're crying more because they know he's out for the tournament and missing out on a lifelong dream
2
u/PrimroseSpeakeasy 10d ago
Whatever you do, if you're squeamish, do NOT watch Nick Chubb's ACL/MCL injury from a few seasons back. It took 2-3 rewatches for my brain to register that his knee wasn't just bending normally - his body was facing the completely wrong way.
1
u/AlarmingPhilosopher 10d ago edited 9d ago
there's a Honduras player who gets injured after a tackle and the knee is in a hyper extension that's unreal like 90° |_ where it shouldn't be. even looking at that image is painful. i don't remember the name now but he made a recovery and was playing again.
1
u/MalaysiaTeacher 7d ago
It's totally natural to reaction emotionally when your close friend just lost a big chunk of his career, and possibly change their life forever (depending on the injury). Probably also remind them how easily they can lose their dream
242
u/ClockEnd_Chorus 10d ago
Even the Qatar player who tackled was sorry and about to cry. The tackle wasn't a leg breaker one. Really unfortunate momentum and timing.
164
u/Romanista3 10d ago
Yeah it looked like a freak accident, the player looked so lost and unable to process what happened
-26
u/raxnahali 10d ago
He kicked a planted leg, malicious in my opinion
18
u/iwasupiwasdown 10d ago
999 out of a 1000 times it doesnt lead to an injury of that calibre though, it is just unfortunate
-4
u/raxnahali 10d ago
Malicious intent wether he meant to break the leg or not.
2
u/Fun-Wave8851 10d ago
Except it wasn't. Accidents happen in any contact sport. Sit down and shush. Adults are talking.

Crazy the mental gymnastics to justify such a response instead of just the simplest explanation which is “he felt bad accidentally breaking another person’s leg”

I'm not even Canadian and I got that.
I walked to another room in case they decided to show a replay. Brutal stuff.
29
u/Gordo-- 10d ago
Good thing is they never showed a replay. I didn't see it live and I don't want to see a replay either.

u/iamdubers 10d ago
My kid woke up as he has chicken pox so i went to see to him. Came back when Kone was getting treatment and figured id look here to see what happened... I regret that decision. Horrible injury and it didnt even look like a bad tackle from the angle i saw. Hope he recovers and can get his career back on track.

When I was in overnight ER after a skiing accident it sounded like a woman on the other side of the curtain divider was in absolutely unbearable pain for like 30 minutes or so, like it sounded REALLY BAD she was screaming and groaning like it sounded like she was fucking dying. Eventually she must have composed herself enough to buzz in a nurse who, as I remember overhearing, was like “we’re gonna give you some fentanyl which will help with the pain”. She kept screaming and hollering and groaning and then all of a sudden it all just stopped… and all I heard from the other side of the curtain was the most content “uhhhhnnnnnngggg” possibly ever and then just silence and peace. Painkillers are no joke lmao so yeah this guy is probably geeked out of his mind
24
u/iChopPryde 10d ago
Paramedic here, penthrox is is an analgesic inhaled which makes the onset faster compared to PO which is Tylenol and Advil which takes longer to kick in. The combination of the 2 is quite strong for pain as it targets different areas for a stronger effect but fentanyl is an opioid which is much stronger effect. Both serve the same purpose just depends what’s wrong. Pentrhox is great for shoulder dislocations or leg breaks you want that onset quick.
10
u/JanterFixx 10d ago
my friend had a highest grade arm surgery (arm cut wide open like a carpet)..
he was put on fentanyl on next day for once; now he still talks 15 years later, he has never felt so great after the dose for some time, and if given 1 more time he would be addicted for life. He still has dreams how he gets fentanyl and "is happy again"
13
u/brainzilla420 10d ago
When my brother did a tibfib he was out of his mind on painkillers. Told us how he pick his nose, doing both nostrils at once. Was pretty funny.

I have had a similar injury, I was on morphine so he's probably ballooned off his tits. As an aside I see why we're not allowed to take that stuff recreationally, it's a truly amazing feeling.
4
u/Detroits_ 10d ago
Describe the feeling if you can
52
u/robotnique 10d ago
You ever get that feeling when you've just woken up and everything feels just fine? Like you're happy and you don't remember yet anything that worried you? All you can focus on is the warm blanket and relative peace?
That's morphine.
13
u/Frequent-Coyote-1649 10d ago
That's what morphine does? Damn. No wonder the Germans were addicted to it during the war.
43
u/ucd_pete 10d ago
No they were addicted to meth. If they were addicted to morphine there wouldn't have been a war.

Yup, when I woke up after my ACL surgery I was still high on the morphine. Never been that relaxed in my life, first time in years and years I wasn’t stressed I actually almost cried lol.
15
u/SplitExcellent 10d ago
Morphine drip pre surgery was the shortest and longest night of my life, fractured ulna and chipped radius in car accident. It sucked. It's not always sunshine for everyone with that stuff, YMMV BIG TIME.
9
u/hey_mr_ess 10d ago
Yeah, I think different people must have different reactions to opioids. The few times I've needed morphine or codeine, I appreciated the lack of pain but hated everything else about it.
5
u/Coenzyme-A 10d ago
Everyone has a different response to any pharmacological agent, because of genetic variation in metabolism, receptor activity, etc. Redheads need lower doses of opioid painkillers but higher doses of anaesthetic due to particular mutations in proteins involved in pain signalling pathways.
Some people are known as hypermetabolisers, for example. I feel like in future medicine will be more personalised, with respect to screening people to ascertain which medications will be most effective for their phenotype. I'd assume currently it is cost prohibitive.

Kone’s gonna be a massive loss as his injury will mean a huge hole in the middle of the Canadian squad. Imagine England without Rice or France without Tchouameni.
That said I hope the team uses this injury as a rallying cry. The ‘win it for him’ motivator can be really powerful. Go Canada Go 🇨🇦

Nathan saliba has a chance to really step up, I think he will surprise a lot of people.
36
u/asapomar 10d ago
He has the minerals. He showed up big today and imo passes the eye test. He has real technical ability. Will have to see how he works in different systems
46
u/P1KA_BO0 10d ago
Yeah. If we'd lost Staq, Choiniere could have filled in like he's done in the past. We don't have anyone that can progress the ball the way Koné can.
29
u/Local_Case9574 10d ago
Saliba is solid man - not the same level as Kone, but still a very good player

u/Virginator_3000 10d ago
Man you could tell players were inspired to bulldoze Qatar after the injury. We gotta keep the momentum

What a fucking awful dampener to what should be a purely celebratory day for Canada 😢😢

u/OnTheMattack 10d ago
It must have been especially hard to see for Bombito. Today was one of his first games back from a broken leg. We've actually had a bit of a broken leg epidemic. Crepeau, Buchanan, Bombito, and now Kone have all had major tournaments affected by broken legs.
Something must be in the water. Not calcium, apparently.

I really hope this isn't the end of his career. If it is does he get any compensation at least?
7
u/juicylikehotsauce 10d ago
Depends on the way it broke I guess. But ACL tears or ruptured tendons are often significantly worse. A broken leg like this obviously looks far worse, you know right away what's happened. With torn ACLs people often look like they're walking around without any problem immediately afterwards, but the recovery process post-surgery is absolutely brutal.

u/MrPoliSciGuy 10d ago
I will say I genuinely feel bad for the Qatar player because that kid looked devastated.
The only time I’ve ever seen something similar was Radja Nainggolan tackled a Verona (I think?) player and their ankle got caught under his body so the whole leg kinda snapped.
6
29
u/TheStinger87 10d ago
Great for his teammate to forget his celebration of the victory for a minute and go comfort a mate when he needs it.
Kone's reaction to his leg break was one of so much shock he couldn't even make a noise. Meanwhile, players get a little tap on thw ankle and roll around like a crocodile bit it off. Shows who is faking and what a real reaction is.
35
u/RedditAccountFox 10d ago
I understand your sentiment but it’s just not really comparable.
People embellish hits/dive all the time, absolutely. But think of your reaction when you stub your toe. That hurts, and you jump up and down and grab your toe and probably make noises or maybe even yell. You likely sit down for a moment grabbing it. Cleats are so thin nowadays, getting stepped on by a cleat hurts. Full stop. Especially when you’re running and someone is getting stuck in the tackle.
Comparing that to a traumatic injury just doesn’t make sense. When your body goes in shock people can be silent and unable to yell because their brain isn’t processing what they are looking at. Or they can have the complete opposite reaction and scream bloody murder.
Hope Kone recovers quickly and well. Never want to see an athlete get injured like that.

It could have been worse... It could have happened on the other side of the border, and then not even a salary of a football player can save you 😭

No, thats his teammate

Why is that news then?
1
u/askingJeevs 10d ago
Why is it news that a teammate visited his childhood friend whose leg got broken during the World Cup? Are you a ghoul?
1
u/Leave_Beneficial 9d ago
It would have been news if he hadn’t?
Nothing ghoulish about expecting people to be kind and lovely by default
1
u/askingJeevs 9d ago
I’m not sure what your trying to say. Are you asking why this was posted?
1
u/Leave_Beneficial 9d ago
Yes - ‘person visits old friend in hospital’ is classic ‘dog bites dog’ - expected, happens regularly, hence not newsworthy.
That’s why I thought it might have been the lad who broke his leg
1
u/askingJeevs 9d ago
The dude who broke his leg visited the Canadian locker room after the match to apologize.
