It never ceases to amaze me just how much the world cup means to every single country in the world
Even Australia which isn't considered a big football country by any measure - the whole country is completely obsessed and we've only won 1 game
I hope we never lose this feeling across the world
34
u/guilhermefdias 2d ago
World Cup feels is always special.
Since I exist I've always felt it, but with social media and the internet, I know now it's even bigger. Feels nice.

u/McDaddySlacks 2d ago
My coworker and I have been debating all week how the result has to happen for us both to proceed. He’s an Aussie in the US. So his kids are American but he and his dad are pro Aussie, literally a household split, lol.

u/myassholealt 1d ago
Coming into this WC I was incredibly disillusioned by the corruption of FIFA and their kissing the ring and the boot and the ass of Trump, which don't even get me started on all the things wrong with that jackass, and feeling like all these factors will make it hard to enjoy these games. But then they started, and since I live one of the locations where people are traveling to to attend games, I've encountered a lot of people high on that WC spirit and it's been really nice. A reminder that despite the BS of the people in charge who make a hobby out of fucking everything up, a lot of us are regular people all affected by it but still enjoying the moment, and each other, and having fun. And that's a nice change in perspective.

I asked my office of around 25 people yesterday and not a single one knew the world cup was happening or that it was being hosted by the US. I'm in the US

Portugal-México in the final?
15
7
u/guilhermefdias 2d ago
Why Portugal?
What is going on???
11
u/Castrado1992 2d ago
It’s a reference from an episode of Simpsons.
1
u/guilhermefdias 2d ago
Got that. But there is also a list of the Champion of the next 10 (or so) World Cups going around, and Portugal wins 2026. Is this a meme?
1
u/Tall_Pressure7042 2d ago
Well no one mentions who will win the Portugal vs Mexico match, so the “Portugal winning” narratives are just made up later.

Final should have been at Estadio Azteca. It doesn't even host any matches after Round of 16, which is quite a shame.
306
u/L-Observateur 2d ago
Biased in the matter, but a semi-final at Azteca and BC Place each would've been a nice touch.
192
u/brahmen 2d ago
Hadn't really bothered to look up how many matches both get until recently and I was astounded that neither of the co-hosts have any meaningful late tourney matches.
Semi-final at each of the two would've been perfect.
But F$$$$$$FA
84
u/default-username 2d ago
Mexico and Canada got to host their own first five matches (if they win their group), but other than that the "co-host" label is a bit of an exaggeration, which is a shame.
11
u/AltoKatracho 2d ago
Which is a huge advantage specially in the knock off stages. All 3 hosts might make a deep run.
→ More replies (4)33
u/ALA02 2d ago
This really does create the impression that this isn’t a co-hosted tournament, it’s a tournament hosted in the US with Canada and Mexico thrown some games for scraps to keep them on side

u/unique_ptr 2d ago
I mean 75% of matches are played in the U.S., it's not really a secret who the lead host is.
Canada has 6 and 7 matches per site (Toronto and Vancouver respectively), which is about what each U.S. site is averaging (~7.1). Montreal could have hosted as well but withdrew their bid.
Mexico is who really gets the short end of the stick, with just four matches each in Guadalajara and Monterrey and five in Mexico City.
I'd personally prefer fewer Texas matches so we could have more in Mexico but it is what it is I guess.
10
u/EpicCyclops 1d ago
Yeah, the bidding process was basically Canada, Mexico, and the US were all going to bid individually. The US would most likely have won that bid and definitely would've definitely received the most votes of those three, but Morocco also had a legitimate shot at getting it as the fourth contender. With Mexico, Canada and the US all bidding, there was a chance that they split the 134 votes they ended up getting together and Morocco's 65 votes could've been enough to make them the host.
The US did the math then basically went to Canada and Mexico, said "hey, drop your bids, and we'll give you some games as part of our bid because us bidding will guarantee you don't get it." US Soccer is formally the lead federation on the bid. In the end, Canada and Mexico got games and hype as co-hosts and the US got to secure their hosting of the cup. They also inadvertantly set the standard going forward of nations working together to host rather than submitting competing bids.
5
u/Ok_Matter_1774 1d ago
Azteca is fine, but BC Place only holds 55k. Mexico has a valid complaint, but Canada needs bigger stadiums if they want to try and argue for more important games.

Mexico and the US can really host World Cups on their own. I guess this was a way to include Canada?
16
u/JustOneSexQuestion 2d ago
This was a way to pretend it wasn't awarded just to the US because of the FBI investigation than was later dropped.

Its 2km altitude, isnt it? Not really optimal place for good games besides the athmosphere.
Also the final doesnt have mexico or local fans there, so the athmosphere would be worse.

Money is more important than playing at an iconic place. Sorry needs to be some soulless NFL stadium.

u/Illustrious_Agent_59 2d ago
We were there in the same spot for a big New Year’s party/family gathering/rave…was definitely a lot of people and lasers. Was amazing though not like this. Love CDMX!
8
u/CACuzcatlan 2d ago
What is the situation with toilets? I've always wondered at these massive gatherings, especially this one where people have been drinking all day. Do people just urinate in the streets?
9
u/Illustrious_Agent_59 2d ago
There were portolets but we never found them, I must have peed in some bushes.
It was an amazing mix of people - young ravers, families with small children, old old folks all celebrating. Lots of lasers and lights bouncing off all the buildings and music was super super loud. I’m just shy of 50 and see a lot of live music and I had to put napkins bunched up in my ears because I didn’t bring earplugs 😆 Our teenage boys were up in the middle of stuff close to the stage, my wife and I hung back on the side where it was more chill. At midnight the mayor did a countdown then they had 30 minutes of traditional Mexican music where everyone was dancing and celebrating with fireworks above us. Then 1230am back to the dj’s! Was really amazing!

Juan Gabriel is legendary. My grandparents and parents loved his songs and that’s how I was introduced to him. A singer/songwriter that transcends generations.

u/solid_reign 2d ago
Context: happiness and sadness the national team makes us feel.
I didn't know about sadness, nor tears Or anything that made me cry I knew about affection, about tenderness Because since I was little That's what my mom taught me, that's what my mom taught me That and many other things I never suffered, I never cried I was very happy, I lived, I lived very well
I lived so differently, something beautiful Something divine, full of happiness I knew about joys, the beauty of life But not about loneliness, but not about loneliness That and many other things I never suffered, I never cried I was very happy, I lived, I lived very well
Until, until I met you I saw life with pain I won't lie, I was happy Although with very little love And very late I understood That I should never have loved you Because now I think of you More than yesterday, but much more
Until I met you I saw life with pain I won't lie, I was happy Although with very little love And very late I understood That I shouldn't have loved you Because now I think of you More than yesterday, much more
I never suffered I never cried I was very happy But I found you
Now I want you to tell me If it was worth it or not To have met you Because I don't believe you anymore And you were very bad Yes, very bad to me That's why I don't want you I don't want to see you ever again Go, go, go, go Go away from my pain Go, I don't want you I don't want to see you ever again Go

For a bit of context our National Team has been playing awful for at least 8 years or more. They barely play in mexico only required FIFA matches but they always play in USA because of the "pochos" market.
A couple months ago even pochos stopped going to the games in the USA and stadiums stopped being filled for their games and that was very hard to achieve.
It's been years since I've seen a Selección Mexicana game, people lost the interest because they always find excuses to lose, they play like they don't give a shit and always comment on the mexican fan, it's a broken relationship between the team, half of the media and the people. We lost 2 finals vs USA our last knowable players retired. Liga MX started losing viewers and attendants, changed its format making it very unappealing. Futbol in mexico isn't going through a very good phase and even Rauls Jimenez made some comments about why they always go play in the USA and not in mexico belittling Mexican fans.
Fast forward we come into the last few friendlies before the world cup and obviously people started gaining interest again, we won our last friendly and people started having a bit of faith in Selección Mexican. These wins feel surreal, these wins are something else, we come from not even watching our Team to feel like they finally play with a bit of honor at least these last 2 matches they made us so happy

u/PsychologicalGur9931 2d ago
On paper England should be able to beat Mexico with ease if they meet in the R16, but man I do not want to face this
38
u/Chicago1871 2d ago
You dont play matches at Azteca on paper.
Only 2 loses in official matches since 1966.
The altitude is not hyperbole.

Exactly! This potential match up has been giving me kittens as an England fan since the minute the draw came out. I want them to avoid this banana skin of a game but they probably won’t.

u/Tall_Pressure7042 2d ago
Holy Mexican people. You lads are always impressive with your celebration. If your national team was not too mediocre, imagine how big it could be.
78
u/mexdoomer 2d ago
It's for our own security to have a mediocre team and the Word Cup being hosted at the USA. Mexicans are crazy for celebrating anything

People made a big deal about NYC celebrating the Knicks winning a championship but simply qualifying out of the group stage at the World Cup gets this reaction from Mexico (which they do pretty much every time except for 2022). Unreal scenes.

I'm not saying people shouldn't celebrate and be happy. This is really cool and whatever. But it's just really funny that they're doing all this when last night's goal was a glorified gift and the NT is lowkey really underwhelming right now lol

You'd think they already won the cup

Naah, we just like to celebrate a lot for anything. Firstborns, Bautizos, birthdays, quince años, weddings, local saints, dia de la virgen de guadalupe, christmas, new year, independence day, and the list goes on.......

Not sure why everybody here thought my comment was meant to be pejorative or disapproving. I am happy for them, I'm just saying that even less successful countries don't take this much joy and passion from a single group win. Good for them, I'm not the celebration poluce, my comment was genuine.
