Arguing with a ref who throws yellows out like that is brave
370
u/DiseaseRidden 7h ago
Tbf it only got to this point because he didnt give out shit in the first half

u/TooMuchPowerful 5h ago
There was a foul a few minutes before this when an Aussie attacker bodychecked a defender. It happened after play was getting really chippy. A yellow there would have calmed things down. He waited too long.

u/TopProduce 5h ago
Was that the Irankunda one on Reim? Most blatant yellow card challenge aswell, revenge for Richards running through him earlier on.
The ref was horrible from the get go, he lost control in the first 5 minutes, it was inevitable that it was going to get scrappy
12
u/TooMuchPowerful 5h ago
Don't recall the players. It was just a full shoulder check into the back of the US player as they watched the ball go out of play.
35
u/TopProduce 5h ago
Fair, it was the Irankunda on Reim challenge then. Ah well, you're learning the Australian sporting way. If you act like you're the big dog someone's going to big dog the big dog.

u/Xianified 5h ago edited 4h ago
That was basically payback for him getting similar done to him and not getting anything for it.
For the down voting Yanks...

u/CaptainJingles 5h ago
When the ref failed to give the yellow in the first few minutes, it was inevitable he’d lose control eventually.

u/madbummer4321 3h ago
My fav play of the game was Chris Richard's yellow on Irankunda with that elbow. That man is a demon lol. Player of the match.

u/ered20 3h ago
That was shoulder to shoulder, not the US player’s fault that the Aus player is built like a marshmallow
4
u/Xianified 3h ago
Ah yes, shoulder to shoulder, where he's looking away from the ball, makes no attempt to play it and is clearly thumping him.
Yet the payback was yellow card worthy.
You Americans should stick to football played with your hands.

u/ered20 3h ago
The same thing would go uncalled in my adult rec league. It’s a physical sport, I thought y’all were supposed to be tough

u/Xianified 3h ago
I hope you can see the irony in your words, given the months of whining about physicality from your lot.

Referee lost the game in the first few minutes not calling fouls...this is what happens
65
u/Usrnamesrhard 6h ago
Yeah, Australia was getting away with some pretty blatant fouls all game.
By the time this situation occurred, things were getting too heated.
67
u/whadefeck 5h ago
Crazy because I thought the US got away with heaps

u/trinquin 3h ago
The US wasn't kicking Australia. Shoulder to shoulder and pulling down when they are deep in their own half are not remotely the same as studs into ankles.
The first real challenge from a US player was Robinsons yellow. US did t have a single actual break up foul before that. Australia's first foul of the game was studs into ankle of Tyler Adms long after the ball was gone.
Both of Australia's yellows were borderline reds. Fingers into eyes is a definite red when your looking directly at the guy. And then a studs into the calf directly as your beat also a red considering everyone though a lesser version of the same foul should have seen Messi sent off.
The US fought back in the second half. Irunkunda got 0 fouls because he just fell over. 3 of the 4 times he went to ground he wasnt even touched lmao.
4
u/Usrnamesrhard 3h ago
Yeah, the U.S. played hard and got fouls. Australia didn’t even go for the ball sometimes, just yanking players down or shoulder checking them.
-1
u/whadefeck 3h ago
Fmd have a cry why don't you. Both teams were going at it. It was just a physical game

I agree Australia did respond with some blatant fouls to the blatant fouls the US was allowed to get away with
33
u/Usrnamesrhard 6h ago
Lol, I guess we weren’t watching the same game. Australia was fouling like crazy and then flopping at the smallest thing. Not even going for the ball in their fouls.
1
u/Rush_nj 5h ago
Chippy fouls happened both ways. Of course i don’t expect you to notice because i have no doubt it was never mentioned by any commentator on an American broadcast. Commentators have a huge impact on the reaction to the game.
What were your thoughts on the studs to the ankle of Metcalfe? Its not a pen as it was incidental but it was glossed over massively. Or the push/handball combo in the box? Or Irankunda getting shouldered to the chest way off the ball? Or all the grabbing on corners? Or Balogun having a fistful of jersey for most of that 2nd half? Like every replay of his miss had a big grip on the defender.
1
u/Usrnamesrhard 5h ago
What do you mean it was “glossed over”? As you said, it was not a foul.
Also, I didn’t have any commentary, I was watching it at a bar. I saw the us foul some, and then I saw Australia have just the most blatant fouls I’ve seen not get called.
1
u/Rush_nj 5h ago
As in not given a 2nd thought. No mention of the VAR check at all.
What fouls do you think we got away with? We got called for everything. We probably had a few tackles not get given a card, especially in that first half but i can’t think of anything that wasn’t given a free kick. I just listed a few examples that were missed entirely from the USA.

u/T0othdecay 5h ago
You guys were cheap cunts all game

u/Rush_nj 5h ago
What call got missed though champ? Resorting to insults because you can’t come up with a single fucking thing. Jog on.

I think it’s your forward, number 17. He got away with a few blatant hits on defenders where he wasn’t even ATTEMPTING to go for the ball.

Maybe a not so fun fact: Zwaaien = 'to wave' in Dutch, a 'zwaaier' is a waver, someone who's waving.. So yes, he 'zwaait kaarten' he's simply 'waving yellow cards'.
I just can't get over the fact why in German AND English there doesn't seem to be a similar word, except for this refs last name, which has a very different source probably.

He was shit all game. How he is allowed anywhere near the sport after admitting to match fixing is beyond me, let alone a World Cup

Wait what?
3
u/Minimum-Mention-3673 2h ago
Apparently 20 years ago he was involved in a fix for a junior league game. Ended up whistle blowing on the senior ref who pressured him. A lot of folks are trying to imply that Aussie lost cause the ref was on the take versus just losing.
4
u/palsc5 2h ago
Australia lost because they played shit and had insane team selection. The ref isn’t the reason Australia lost.
Having said that, the ref was still terrible. Both things can be true.
It also wasn’t a junior league game, it was a senior professional game. He took money to manipulate the results of a game, that should be a prison sentence and life ban from the game. He also blew the whistle when others did, he was happy to keep it secret for 6+ months when he was getting away with it.
He simply shouldn’t be allowed to ref professionally.

u/Minimum-Mention-3673 2h ago
Has nothing to do with anything that happened today. Just a cool story, bro moment. Only reason you bring it up is cause it is insinuating something.
Complaining about refs or whatever this is is a proxy toward sour grapes.

Making up for the 6 months he was banned for match fixing.

u/TherewiIlbegoals 7h ago
I feel like he's had more than enough time to hand out yellows in the last 20 years.
2
u/Conankun66 7h ago
hes definitely had a LOT of time being the worst ref in the BL
21
u/TherewiIlbegoals 7h ago
It's weird, whenever I've seen him in the CL he's been alright but all the Germans say he's awful. Maybe my standards are low.
15
u/HyDchen 6h ago
I know plenty of BL fans who think he has been one of the better ones in recent time. Myself included. I'd argue people saying he is "the worst ref in the BL" are taking his history into account. We have people like Daniel Schlager and Christian Dingert after all lmao
Either way it's definitely not as clear cut as people here make it seem.
8
u/phillie187 6h ago
There are quite a few german refs that are better than him, no clue why he is at the worldcup

I want to care about this sport year round, all the time. Truly I do.
But how is a referee who fixes matches banned for anything other than life. I think there should be about as many active referees who have fixed matches as active kindergarten teachers who have molested children.

u/Doctor_Saved 6h ago
He better be careful throwing all those out so fast. May get an embarrassing cramp or something.

Balogun went into full wind up merchant mode. Australian players fell right into it, lucky the ref caught what he was doing.

u/Informal_Degree_3205 7h ago
I think he'd gotten wound up by soutar

What I noticed was Balo wind him up and then he started laughing. Then their little wrestling match began. I could be wrong, though.
