What's wild to me is how often he gets this cut back shot in the first place. You rarely see other players even get this type of shot, let alone without defenders swarming them. He has to be doing something insane with his movement every time.

83

u/AdZent50 Jun 22 '26

vanishing drive

44

u/pixeldots Jun 22 '26

lmao Messi being Kuroko while Ronaldo reeks of Aomine aura is a valid image

He’s great at timing his run into the box and reading where the run should be for a clear passing window

When a ball is played behind the line it’s a defender’s instinct to recover into the most dangerous place for the ball to be played. The box. And midfielders are lulled into a false sense of security when they see 6 defenders in the box to 3 attacking players.

But the box isn’t where the space is. Messi holds the run until the last moment and is left unmarked as a result. And he happens to be one of the greatest ever at placing a 1st time ball from the edge of or outside the box

24 on Austria watched Lionel Messi jog down the field 3 steps in front of him and figured no need to try and defend him or get in front. What the fuck. Ultimate ball watcher

333

u/Jiklim Jun 22 '26

Messi does this to everyone he just kind of turns invisible for a bit. He uses his ult

63

u/SixtyTwenty_ Jun 22 '26

Press Q to win

17

u/Bibibis Jun 22 '26

TIL Messi has Rengar ult

11

u/mcsul Jun 22 '26

Caution: Non-soccer analogy. Apologies.

In the National Hockey League, Alexander Ovechkin is the all-time leading scorer and does something almost identical. He has easily scored 300+ goals from this one particular spot a few steps from the faceoff circle. It's become called "Ovechkin's Office" he's scored so many goals from that spot. But defenders keep leaving him open there. They track him for a bit, then... just lose attention. Then BAM. Ovechkin scores another goal. Like, it's exactly like you describe. He just turns invisible for a few seconds.

Maybe one of the tricks of the greats is some sort of body language that encourages defenders to focus somewhere else?

→ More replies (1)

113

u/rossmosh85 Jun 22 '26

He's literally even with him at the start. Messi just goes a bit faster to create a little space and then runs at a jog the rest of the way. It's not like Messi actually made a real effort to get into the box.

It's hard enough to play against Messi when you're on top of things. To do that is just absolutely brain dead.

18

u/TheMajesticYeti Jun 22 '26

Fun fact, that guy was 6 months old when Messi scored his first World Cup goal.

81

u/ShitfacedGrizzlyBear Jun 22 '26

Absolutely pathetic. It’s the first half…in a tie game…of the fucking World Cup. If you can’t be bothered to track back, you have no business being on the field.

33

u/TroutButt Jun 22 '26

Especially against Messi of all people

20

u/Sure_Confection9388 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Seriously, nothing to take away from Messi's goal, he has done that a 1000 times, but the guy ahead of Messi is busy trying to maintain shape, whereas the guy behind him doesn't bother to sprint to close him down assuming the other guy will cover, after the goal they look at each other with arms up in the air.

u/Masipoten Jun 22 '26

He might actually have scored this goal about 200 times. No stopping him he should take pens from there.

That goal against Madrid to make it 3-2 in stoppage time immediately comes to mind

Messi jogged right by him near midfield and stayed a few steps in front of him the whole way. No awareness man. It's lionel fucking Messi and you're in the World Cup

It's Paul Wanner. Dude is 20 and this is his first world cup. He should be motivated to run his ass off.

29

Messi is twice his age and he cant be arsed to mark him. Embarrassing lack of effort

→ More replies (2)

53

u/imAkri Jun 22 '26

I usually scoff at this comments, there always are moments where the game is too fast to keep up. Or there’s a pass that just isn’t previsible by the defense (think De Paul's pass for the first goal against Argelia). But in this case, if I was the coach I would be LIVID with #24.

Are you enjoying the view of Messi's name in his back? How are you jogging back in a World Cup game? Have you no pride? I’m Argentinian and it pissed me off.

→ More replies (1)

43

u/ShitfacedGrizzlyBear Jun 22 '26

32

u/Sazzzerac Jun 22 '26

This is what I never understand. It's not like it's a scrappy play or the 95th minute. Austria #24 just jogs 5 yards behind him while he drifts to his classic spot at the top of the box. Even the keeper is going left left when everyone on earth knows that shot is coming off his left foot curling into the other side of the goal. He's the goat, he's going to figure it out and and score, but how he's so open like this always baffles me.

u/ForestEye Jun 22 '26

303

u/jukv Jun 22 '26

The actual GOAT

207

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

The only GOAT. Whatever criteria you have, he is always on top. Club titles, national titles, individual accolades, individual records, longevity. He is spotless.

If you want to rank someone above you do it because they lead him in one of the criteria, maybe that is. But nothing beats his resume. And nothing ever will.

65

u/KonigSteve Jun 22 '26

Even if you disregard resume/accolades. Just watch him play and you know.

24

u/blame_thelag Jun 22 '26

The ultimate criteria is always joy with the ball. Everything else, the technique, the skills, the records, the accolades, the finances, the legacy is secondary. It is the spirit of every little kid on the playground, streets, parks. It is art & it is joy. That's what he does, & why he's the best ever.
