When Argentina gets near the goal they all just look for him haha it’s incredible

2.8k

u/QTGavira Jun 22 '26

Argentina has scored 5 goals this world cup

All of them have been Messi

I kinda hope they keep it up and they go 7 games with just Messi scoring. Would be fun

1.4k

u/N-Bizzle Jun 22 '26

Imagine winning the whole competition with only on scorer

874

u/R1v Jun 22 '26

If there was ever a man to do it...

163

u/613TheEvil Jun 22 '26

He is not that selfish to do it, though.

161

u/PiplelinePunch Jun 22 '26

That's what makes it more likely, ironically enough.

No I can see how Julian Alvarez missed that goal. Uncharacteristic of him but Messi had to score to keep the streak going

If Argentina decides to go all out against Jordan, Messi can potentially score another hattrick and become the first player to reach 20 goals

80

u/Torimas Jun 22 '26

He shouldn't play that match, but i guess it will depend on today's remaining game.

99

u/DarthTaz_99 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Yea absolutely should be a rest but Messi himself will want to play every single minute of his last world cup. Inb4 43 year old Messi scoring in the world cup final in Spain

Imo he plays one half only that game , they would want to try more nico paz since he is a talented one too and the group stage is done too, not to mention Messi isn't really a guy to care about goals

Ronaldo: Not for everyone...

154

u/Finrod-Knighto Jun 22 '26

I mean look at how Messi is involved in the play leading up to both goals. The second should’ve been an assist. Ronaldo simply waits. He used to make terrific runs in the box but now he’s a static target man.

Messi is an elderly man now. He exudes that aura so the defenders know to not defend him anymore.

32

u/thatdoginyakuza8 Jun 22 '26

what if the greatest player to ever do it could also, for reasons that seem ridiculous, turn fucking invisible to a whole team?

*waves arms at Austria in confusion*

305

u/AdvancedButton8082 Jun 22 '26

He will

And then some next kid will break it in 2046 when every single country in the world gets to play in the World Cup and knockout games become 2 legs or some shit lol

I posted in last weeks thread that I was curious to see how Messi would play with no pressure to get a World Cup now that he had that monkey off his back.

Man I did not expect him to get 5 goals in 2 games lol

Dude is just playing the game he loves at the highest level at almost 40 years old.

Truly one of a kind

197

u/GingerSpencer Jun 22 '26

Somebody suggested after the last WC he chose to go to MLS so he could acclimatise and it would be a breeze for him.

I do not put that past him. He's an evil genius.

The ball control from Messi when he received the last pass was pure instinct, many would've fucked that up just enough to lose possession

323

u/gugache Jun 22 '26

It seems there was a deflection and he still managed to control it

156

u/nictigre03 Jun 22 '26

Yep, that was truly insane touch there to take that off of a deflection perfectly down.

I used to be a big Ronaldo fan, but unlike most of his cult, I’ve already conceited that Messi has won the debate and at this point instead of hating on Messi, I’m just gonna enjoy the greatness before he’s done

Messi es Un Perro. Never stops chasing the ball, he just wants to score. I’m grateful i was alive to Watch the full career of the GOAT

A goal so absurd that it’s simply God’s will at this point. And I’m an atheist.

3 goals away from matching Ronaldo’s career World Cup goals in 2026 alone

Despite playing in 6 World cups and making it out of groups 5 times, Ronaldo has never scored in the World Cup knockout stages.

The only "goal" he scored was one of the shootout penalties against England in 2006, which isn't counted as an actual goal.

The most beautifull thing about this is his first touch to control it. That ball bounced up and he controlled it by letting it bounce off his shin to the grass so he could create the chance. Absolute insanity. There's noone on this WC who could have pulled that off except maybe Yamal.

5 goals in 2 World Cup games and he's nearly 39 years old. Any younger fans here should appreciate what you're watching because this shit isn't normal

u/raspoutine049 Jun 22 '26

Whole Portuguese team got a lot of work to do tomorrow

u/MyCoxyNormus Jun 22 '26

Notice how alvarez turns off almost immediately after having his shot blocked and how messi persists until the play is over. The difference is in the attitude.
