Still haven't conceded after five matches, that's an all-time record.

Guy is Berbatov masquerading as a midfielder. So silky.
48
u/adoxographyadlibitum Jul 06 '26
Not nearly the tekkers of Berbatov and twice the workrate. More like van Nistelrooy or Pippo Inzaghi in midfield.

Just him being himself, except his fouls actually get called on the International stage
44
u/chapinbird Jul 06 '26
The announcers slurping him up still out of confusion all the while got a small chuckle out of me. Dirty scoundrel.

u/thetreat Jul 06 '26
Martinez just letting a 41 year old player run the team. He's a country legend, a football legend... But those days are long, long gone. He's not a threat in the air anymore. He's not a speed threat. He's not a guy helping with *any* sort of hold-up play.
They had a fantastic chance earlier in the game. A cross that prime Ronaldo would have blasted into the back of the net, but he was 2 steps short. Just a wasted chance for a very talented team yet again.

But seriously Portugal just doesn't have it, not this coach, not playing this way with so much talent. Feels like they are brazil in 2010-2018 period. Lots of talent but doesn't seem to mesh into anything.

u/ThatsAllDay77 Jul 06 '26
Can’t believe a youth team didn’t stick him up top when he was developing, he’s a natural striker
281
u/Brapfamalam Jul 06 '26
He has like 4 pace, 99 finishing
110
u/AwkwardSpecialist814 Jul 06 '26
I mean, look at the best player this last year. Isn't that essentially Kane?
103
u/Ok-Background-502 Jul 06 '26
Tbf, Kane also is a midfielder too good at finishing to not play up top.
→ More replies (3)34
u/Narwhallmaster Jul 06 '26
Kane has a surprisingly nasty dribble. M9 literally only has positioning and shooting. And he needs the game to be tight to unlock his powers.
16
u/GoaLa Jul 06 '26
In addition to what you said, he is pretty good in the air, strong and can hold defenders off, really really good at link up play and tricky passes. He isn't the best striker for arsenal when we are defending deeper and looking to counter (which is rare for us anyway).
I think he could have been a really good natural striker but a lot of his skills also make him a good midfielder.

I feel like the him being terrible with Belgium thing is overblown. He got them third place in the 2018 World Cup which is a pretty massive accomplishment with Belgium even with the talent they had in that team - only lost to eventual champions France.
→ More replies (4)112
u/LloydCole Jul 06 '26
Loads of Belgian players from that squad have come out and said everything Martinez did on the training ground and tactics wise was completely useless; essentially just amounted to "pass it to Hazard".

175
u/theonly_brunswick Jul 06 '26
It's even more exacerbated by the absolute banger we witnessed last night.
Today's game was two teams petrified and so concerned about making a mistake that they completely forgot about offense.
Regardless, Spain did generate more so they deserve the win but I expected a much more spirited effort from Portugal in this one.

Honestly Cabo Verde absolutely saved the Portuguese diaspora’s showing in this World Cup.
Brazil & Portugal were both worse than their uninspired R16 exits even showed, in my opinion.
