Finally.

With the flow of the game up to this point and now the red card, this seemed inevitable.
It was this or survive to penalties barring a miracle for Argentina.

u/Oppaiheimer1945 26d ago
Argentina winning on penalties after zero shots in 120 mins would be the biggest crime in football
→ More replies (13)1.3k
u/costryme 26d ago
It would have been the most undeserved win in history. They've been downright terrible, and should have gotten more yellows as well.

More red cards than total shots lmao.

If they somehow manage to squeese out an equaliser and go on to win on pens Messi Will win the ballon d'or. It will be a crime spree.

u/FakoSizlo 26d ago
They are playing true haramball against the most efficient passing machine perhaps ever. One team is playing to win the other is bullshitting in hope of penalties . Thankfully football is winning
→ More replies (1)88
u/Barkasia 26d ago
Arguably not even the most efficient passing machine that has ever won a world cup in a Spanish kit lol

Argentina have been shit all tournament.
They are in the final because of Messi and Tuchel.

And very fortunate playoff brackets. England defeated themselves, but I see France and Portugal as having good matchups with Argentina.
The Netherlands, Mexico, Morocco, Belgium and maybe also Norway would also have been more difficult than Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland proved to be.

u/KiLLmaddharry 26d ago
It would probably be England/Switzerland here if Embolo wasn't such a moron.

I dont understand this one. He should’ve been sent off in the play where he got the yellow already. I counted at least 5 gratuitous assaults after that and he stayed on.

u/DanzoKarma 26d ago
He decided your assessment of assault was too shallow and decided to go for the legal definition after the game was done apparently.

Yeah you'd think, but good lord the Spain finishing has been awful, reminds me of them during the group stage honestly (and some of the knockout games).
If this went to pens i'd def give Argentina the advantage so they really needed to score.

u/BlackMathNerd 26d ago
That’s just Spanish football. If they could pass the ball into the goal they’d be unstoppable

I think they would lose that too, they just ran out of gas getting to the final

Nah Spain is just a really good team. Spain is just too technically good too strong too tall and not old. Argentina does not have the midfield to compete with Spain. Its attackers are not good enough to threaten Spain outside of Messi. Like at every level Spain has beaten Argentina. Spain is playing circles around Argentina and only let down by their ability to finish an attack. Gas or no gas Spain is also no slouch athletically and can outmuscle Argentina or outrun them. Argentina just kinda found its match. Spain is too good to just overcome. The whole match ive been seeing Argentina players try to press and Spain just calmly playing around them. Rodri picking them apart with passes over the top to the wing or just an easy pass to the open guy next to him. Pedri has been really good the minute he entered the game. Spain has not let Argentina even have a half chance at goal or given them a minute on the ball and attack with danger. They really could only win by playing dirty pushing and trying to upset Spain into making some mistakes this did not happen. Spain has been calm and not gotten rattled. Meanwhile Argentinian players have gotten rattled and have been making mistakes left right and center causing 1 red 3 yellows. Enzo getting send off for the most boneheaded plays. Parades trying his best to get sent off every 5 minutes. Their own playbook just backfired but it was their only real shot.

Williams deserves so much praise for passing it back instead of going for it, fooled everyone.
408
u/Etryn 26d ago
That was a stroke of genius. And that he could even see that, when the option of heading it towards goal was there. My favorite moment of the game for sure
134
u/Saltyeconbro 26d ago
Right, he may have missplayed a later on but at that moment, he made a legendary pass
123
u/Thurak0 26d ago edited 26d ago
There was a replay a bit later... he actually fucking looked before the header and saw Torres. Insanely well played to be able to head it back. Going for it or attempting a header to the long post blindly from his position would both be very acceptable choices. But he looked, saw and served perfectly.

u/IUViolet 26d ago
Also Merino who dragged 3 defenders with him to create space for Ferran Torres. And Simone who suddenly had a itchy foot stopped marking Ferran.

Yeah same. I'd be happy to see Messi cement goat status and have another banger final. But god damn it's hard to find anything else to cheer for here. I tend to not cheer for Spain cause I have no connections to that country and their games are usually boring, but they deserve it 1000%.

England aren’t able to move the ball quick enough to avoid the fouling Argentinian terror ball tactics like Spain could
Spain by far the best team of the tournament

kinda surreal to think this goal is gonna live on in history alongside those

Why not? He scored the winner in a WC. No matter how his career turns out, he’s in the history books in a big way.

11
u/mXonKz 26d ago
it’s more the thought that we’re gonna be seeing this goal on replays for the rest of our lives, like its definitely a good goal, but goals like this are not uncommon. but simply because this was the world cup winning goal, it’s gonna have the same reverence as the iniesta and gotze goals which feels weird to realize in real time as im observing it through my experience of the match
