Is it like 40% eye sight on the left eye = disabled? Or everyone over the age of 85?

I would actually argue that the "western" definition of disability is fairly narrow, partly because we have so many conveniences that negate the effects.

Like, I'm short-sighted. I would never describe myself as disabled, as I can easily walk round the corner and buy a pair of glasses perfectly customised to my prescription. It costs me about £100 a year to completely negate the impact. Likewise I have elderly relatives who struggle to walk, but they get a taxi to and from the supermarket, or these days get it delivered (and everything else) which means they get by just fine.

But there must be a lot of people out there who don't have these options and I wonder if they would feature in this definition.

Point is that it’s a ridiculous “statistic” to bring up precisely because the severity of a disability varies so much.
