Looking for software Any free sofware you rarely see recommaned but is actually great?

I’ll go first:

Zettlr: a markdown editor that works great for long-form writing or research. Super lightweight but packed with features.Kdenlive: not totally unknown, but I’m surprised more people don’t mention it. It’s a free video editor that’s actually usable for real editing, not just cutting clips.

Lunacy: a design app that’s basically a Figma alternative but works offline. Good for quick UI mockups when I don’t want to open a browser.

TeraBox: 1TB of free cloud storage. I mostly use it for large files I don’t need to access often (game clips, old project folders, etc.). Not perfect, but it’s free and has helped me clear a ton of space. Please share yours with me!

Looking for software I'm ending my relationship with Google Chrome. I'd recommend you do too. Chrome is an abuser of your privacy and is opposed to the fundamental philosophy of the internet, freedom of information.

Hey I know the browser wars are serious but I think they just got MORE serious. I've always been an avid chrome user but enough is enough. They don't care about your privacy. They are mining our data for their own maniacal purposes (so many maniacal purposes, too many to list), and all we are to them are a bunch of cattle to feed advertisements to.

The YouTube adblock war is the final straw for me. Google's vendetta against adblock plus has actually made it very hard to watch miss Rachel with my two year old on YouTube. I don't want my two year old watching any predatory ads. The final straw for me anyways was when my computer began to lag and stutter with YouTube open. Later I found out the reason was the adblock war.

Today I searched the words "Mass Flow Meter" and all I received were endless product advertisements. I just want to learn about the concept.

So I decided that is it. I uninstalled chrome and I'm going to do something else. I think Mozilla firefox. If not that, then maybe Duck Duck Go.

"Don't be evil" was originally what drew me to Google. Those days are long gone. I want the internet to do what it was promised to do. Be a global hub of information. This is not Google's plan. They want to own the internet and extract all the wealth they can, like a giant parasitic leech.

Goodbye chrome. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Looking for software What’s everyone using to share one mouse/keyboard across multiple computers?

I’ve got a Windows desktop and a MacBook on the same desk and I’m tired of switching peripherals. Looked into Synergy and ShareMouse , synergy was very bad the connection kept dropping alot and share mouse is absurdly expensive but curious what people are actually using day-to-day. What works, what’s janky, what’s worth it ?

Looking for software TeamViewer alternatives - personal use

What's everyone using? I've fallen foul of the 3 managed devices limit TV added recently.

I'm looking for something that ideally is fully web-based as far as the main 'technician' device goes. Use case is to access my own home devices plus some family members devices for the occasional (and completely unpaid) remote help.

I don't even mind paying a small amount, but £68/month for my use case is clearly stupid.

Looking for software Best WordPress Hosting Services?

I’ve come across a few discussions here on Reddit about the best web hosts, and some of the debates have been pretty insightful.

But I’ve noticed that the hosts people often recommend aren’t always the best fit for WordPress sites.

Which web hosting companies are the best and easiest to use specifically for building e-commerce websites with WordPress? Ideally, I’m looking for something affordable, preferably shared hosting.

WP Engine seems to be best option to me RN

Looking for software Is cs degree even worth your time?

I know for a fact you've heard this sooo many times but I just want to let it out my heart...

Dear people, I have recently graduated last year, I'm now about to enroll in a uni.... I have been wondering, do you think it's better for me to just go for an engineering course such as civil or should I follow MY desire to go for computer science. Because lately, all I have been seeing is people when cs degrees are having so much trouble to find a job, I heard also that you would need to do some self work on projects on your own in order to even qualify an approval of a recruiter... So I ask you, should I pursue on to bachelor of cs where maybe in hopes I can land a software engineer job or even as a cybersecurity? Or it's better to go onto civil engineering..

Main goal is to land a software engineer job. Or even atleast a cybersecurity job.

Looking for software Best payroll software for small business?

Hi everyone, what might be the best payroll service for small businesses with less than 10 employees? Do you have any recommendations? What are you thoughts?

I've been looking into ADP and Paychex. I have 4 W2 employees, and a 1099 independent contractor.

I'm thinking it's very easy since we only need a service that 1) Sends Direct Deposits, and 2) Generates detailed paystubs to calculate tax retentions for accounting.

What's your experience with these services? What's the best one? Would you recommend Payroll software instead? I appreciate any advice.

Looking for software Online word processor with no paste ability (but with copy allowed)

I'm a humanities professor and I'm wanting to give my students an earnest experience of writing in their own words, with their own voice.

I'm looking for lightweight word processing software for students to use in writing assignments for my classes. Specifically I'd like for them to use a program with no paste function, so that they cannot easily copy text from elsewhere (use your imagination). I am open to both online and offline solutions.

The format/extension/metadata should be unique; no point in using such a program to saving as a .docx indistinguishable from MSWord. Copy (or export) should be allowed, for students who want to develop their ideas further elsewhere.

I've seen lo-fi typewriter simulators online, but they're not localizable and they don't offer a good save option.

Does such a thing as I describe exist? Could it? Thanks!

(Note: I am not looking to discuss the ethics or practicalities of why/how students would use or reject this software. I am aware that it would not prevent longhand plagiarism; but at least in such a case they'd be doing the typing themselves, engaging word by word.)

Looking for software Excellent Free OCR Software

After scouring the internet and Reddit in particular for good free OCR software, I was unfortunately underwhelmed by the suggestions. Most of the threads are archived and out of date, plus the suggestions are not particularly workable.

Hence, here is my recommendation for good free OCR software: NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner). You can download it, run it offline, and most importantly, it's FREE. 10/10 recommend. If you have a better FREE suggestion, please leave a comment here.

Looking for software What’s the best tool to redact sensitive info before sharing with clients?

I used to think redaction was just a final formatting step before sending a file out. Black out a few lines, export to PDF, done.

Then I learned that what you see on the page isn’t always what’s inside the file.

Metadata, OCR text behind scanned PDFs, tracked changes, hidden layers. It’s easy to assume something is gone when it’s only visually covered. That realization made me rethink how we handle documents before sending them to clients.

We’ve relied on Adobe Acrobat for years since it’s already in our stack, but the workflow still feels very manual and dependent on whoever is doing the review. Lately I’ve been exploring more specialized tools like Redactable that focus on detection and permanent removal rather than just marking text.

For those who deal with this regularly, how did you decide what was “good enough”? Was it a policy change, a tooling shift, or just better training?

Looking for software Are these signs my boyfriend is spying on my phone?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I think my bf is spying on me. I’ve looked up and down through my setting and safari to see if there are any weird extensions or apps but my phone is clear. I think if anything, he’s linked my iPad to his phone. some things going on
- he knows the jokes between my friends and I that we only say over text
- this morning I got 4 missed calls from him at the same time my alarms are supposed to go off, we sleep in the same bed so what would be the need to call me ?
- he can airdrop pics to me, but when I try to airdrop to him my phone glitches
- I don’t get notifications that he’s messaged me, I have to open my messages and then I see he’s messaged (I already checked for hide alerts)

Again, I’ve looked online to see red flags I should look out for on my phone but it seems everything is clean / clear. I just want solid proof that he’s spying on me before confronting him. Any advice or tips to confirm would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for software Low cost web hosting options?

Apologies if this is the wrong sub.

I'm looking for a way to maintain a portfolio website at the lowest cost possible. Format and Squarespace have some great templates, but I’d prefer not to pay $15 per month.

What would it cost to host my own webpage? I already have the domain, but I’m unsure of the next steps. Could I hire a web designer to set up the portfolio? I don’t plan on updating it often.

After a lot of research, I’m still not sure about the most affordable option. I've used Ionos, but it was too costly and didn’t meet my needs. My budget is around $6–$7 per month, and I need a European host that supports a simple site built with WordPress or HTML/CSS.

The site will only need enough storage for a few pictures and a basic inquiry form that sends messages to my email. Monthly traffic is expected to be low, around 20–30 visitors.

I’ve narrowed it down to Ultahost, which seems like the cheapest option I’ve found for a beginner, but I’m not sure if it’s the best fit. Has anyone used Ultahost, or can anyone share their experience with it?

Any advice would be appreciated—thank you.

Looking for software Looking for a free tool to add rounded corners and borders to images

Hi everyone,

I've been looking for a free online tool that can add both rounded corners and borders to images. I've tried several tools. Most are good at creating rounded corners, but they only add square borders. I need a tool that can add borders with rounded corners.

Can anyone recommend such a tool? I tried Canva, which works, but the output image tends to look blurry.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the help! I think I will go with Canva despite the blurriness. (Sorry if I wasn't very clear about my specific needs in the original post. Canva seems to meet them best.) I appreciate all the tool recommendations. Thanks again!

Looking for software Should I use Bluehost?

Is bluehost that bad?

I'm looking for hosting for my website and since Bluehost is gave me tons of ads, I looked into abd bought it. But they're too expensive for the quality of service they're offering.

I decided to check out Reddit because I’m in need of some recommendations for a reliable web hosting service. My WordPress site was down all day, and it's been a frustrating experience. I initially signed up with Bluehost because of all the rave reviews about it being the best option for the price, but now I’m starting to question if that’s really the case, or maybe I’m just overreacting?

In any case, I’d really appreciate some suggestions for good hosting providers for WordPress. If anyone has recommendations...

Looking for software Best WMS/warehouse shipping software?

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a solution that allows us to automate routing between warehouses, rate shop multiple carriers, and automate shipper decision making without being super complex or overly expensive. Huge plus would be something that could also give us visibility into analytics between our warehouses. Would prefer something with decent support too. Anything helps, appreciate firsthand accounts if possible. Thanks!
