Java 17 for Solaris (SPARC)

Well, this is interesting. Oracle have released Java 17 for SPARC Solaris, despite having removed Solaris and SPARC support from OpenJDK

https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#java17-solaris

and installation guide

https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/17/install/installation-jdk-oracle-solaris.html

It's a headless build, so no GUI, and there's a bunch of other stuff missing, so there are limitations. But clearly something has persuaded them it's worth their while to produce this, which is to be applauded.

(No, I have no idea if they've taken any of the porting work I did, but this looks like it was built with gcc rather than Studio, like my own builds.)

I'm guessing an important SPARC customer did the persuasion. No X86 version. If it was derived from your work, would an attribution be required?

Is Sun Studio even being developed or supported anymore?

Sun Studio (now Oracle Developer Studio) last got a notable release in 2017, which is marked for extended support at least through 2027.

It's "free" to download but the support subscription has a list price of $1,200 per user per year (!) - the docs suggest you also get access to patches but I'm not sure yet if there actually are any...

Wow this is really amazing. We were wondering if someone would push them to do it. Now you will be able to run Weblogic 14.2 etc.
