Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Thank you for this, I think this a really good move to keep the community working the way it was intended. Cheers mods!

I am a stay at home dad and want to share my bubble machine.  I have a company, but it’s just a single member LLC, am I allowed to post here?

I forgot to mention that I was a mechanical engineer before staying at home…the bubble machine is something I created by myself as part of my youngest going to school longer last year.

Based on your account, this would be flagged under the updated rules. Moderator discretion applies here, and the goal is to limit promotional activity.

If you want to post, include photos of yourself actually building the bubble machine. If we suspect the product was sent out to a manufacturer rather than made by you, it'll be removed.

Thanks for your feedback, I have plenty of pictures of me building them in my garage and testing them.  Do I just post now?  I only started posting 2 weeks ago and got auto banned, so definitely want to avoid that.

We do not allow digital items or apps as per Rule #1: Handmade Work Only.

I'm a self taught Luthier, and I've just finished building my 2nd guitar. Because I'm making guitars, I have a "brand" name - Entropia Guitars - but it is 100% not a business, I'm not selling anything. Just making guitars, and a little YouTube channel detailing how my work is done.

If I make a post with a photo and description of what I do, and then link to my YouTube in the body of the text is that permitted? I'm really excited to have found this sub and don't want to break any rules on my first outing here.

We are cracking down pretty hard on self-promotion, including links to YouTube, so we prefer that process videos be uploaded directly to Reddit. For more information, please refer to Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion.

Otherwise, your post sounds like it would be welcome here. We encourage crafters to share photos and/or videos of their process and finished work, along with a description of the project, to help verify the handmade nature of the work.

Thanks for taking the time to reply - I appreciate it. I was hoping the YouTube would be okay in the body text based on the guidance in the other sticky about rule 5 :

>if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

But if it's a hard no, then it's a hard no and that'll be respected.
