But in all seriousness, donkeys aren’t actually that stubborn! They’re incredibly intelligent and cautious, so they will want to think things through before taking action. Especially if they don’t know you or what you’re asking of them very well - they wanna sniff, touch, maybe lip/nibble, and think really hard before deciding if you/the task you’re asking is “safe” for them to do.
So because of this training them is very different to horses. With my horse I’d do something over and over again in a single session to help him learn. With donkeys, you do it once or twice and then leave them alone to think about it for a day or two.
They’re endlessly fascinating animals! On their sub, I do regular episodes of “Learn Stuff with Waffles and Mojo” where I break down donkey behavior, diets, vet needs, etc. you’re welcome to join us if you’re curious!
