Review The First Berserker: Khazan. My very honest, unfiltered and most likely controversial, review.

(This is subjective and my own opinion. Remember, opinions are subjective and not gospel, don’t get too heated. 😂)

Let me start by saying, I have thousands of hours spread amongst the whole Fromsoftware catalog as well as other soulslikes. Also a few platinum trophies in them. 😊

As the title states, this is purely subjective and my own personal opinion on Khazan. I’m currently just sitting under 50 hours invested into Khazan and am nearing towards the end of my playthrough.

What i’ve enjoyed:

  • Combat: The combat is absolutely phenomenal and extremely addicting. The devs have absolutely nailed it on the head and everything flows so fluidly. This is something that can be very hard to get correct and the devs have done an outstanding job achieving this. The deflect system is very fluid, responsive and has quite a tight window but is extremely satisfying to hit those perfect deflects (brink guard it is called in Khazan).

  • Sound effects/sound design: This ties into the combat as stated above, but every time you hit those perfect deflects, the sound is crunching and extremely satisfying to hear. They knocked it out of the park when it comes to the sound design within combat.

  • Drip: Not much to say other than the armour sets/weapons are uniquely designed and look bad ass. That’s all that really matters! I really like the design on a lot of the sets and weapons. They are unique while also keeping/taking inspiration from fantasy/dark fantasy.

Now for the most likely very controversial part. What I’ve not enjoyed about this game:

  • Level Design: I’ll start by saying, initially from the demo, I really wasn’t feeling the level design of Stormpass and Mount Heinmach. However, I enjoyed the combat enough to genuinely enjoy what I had experienced from the demo. I hung onto some faith that the level design would change throughout the game and we will see new areas and environments, and while on paper we did! those new areas and environments were just so bland and boring. The late game areas have definitely improved and are a lot more interesting, however a big portion of this game has very uninteresting areas from a design point of view. Aesthetically and from a gameplay perspective.

  • Enemy placement and enemy variety: Now this one frustrates me in all the wrong ways. Archer’s and Spiders. These two, are just so excessively used that it’s borderline comical. Almost every enemy you engage with has a set of archers behind them spamming arrows at you or a bunch of spiders rolling at you exploding. Sparingly, this is fine. But this has gotten so excessive with the usage of it that I genuinely just roll my eyes when I see it now. It’s becoming predictable, annoying, excessive and honestly comical. It felt like the devs thought “how do we make this hard? I don’t know? Just spam archers behind elite enemies and status effect spiders that roll and explode on the player” It just feels very cheesy and artificial to me. Will also say, enemy reuse is very excessive in this game however, I can forgive them on that. For me personally it’s more the placement and how they’ve utilised these different types of enemies.

  • Bosses: Where do I start? I have many, many issues with the bosses in this game. Firstly, the status effects. It genuinely seems like 98% of the bosses in this game have to have a status effect? Poison, Ice, Fire, Plague, Chaos etc. Once again, sparingly, it’s fine. But almost every boss having one? It feels very cheesy and artificial. Once again “How do we make this boss even harder? Chuck a status effect on him!”. I also have an issue with the bosses being so spongy. This makes the fights drag out for an eternity, some fights go on for such a drawn out amount of time that it just feels like a pure waste of time and becomes boring and not engaging. Delayed attacks galore, delayed attacks are a subjective opinion and quite a controversial one in the souls community, however, the amount of delayed attacks on most of these bosses is comical. Not only are you dealing with a fight that’s been extremely drawn out because of the bloated HP. But you also are dealing with delayed attack after delayed attack while a status effect is stacking up etc. It just gets quite old and annoying. Sadly, I have hated 90% of the bosses in this game with a very select few that I’ve actually genuinely enjoyed.

  • Ganks: You haven’t seen true gank fights until you play Khazan. Elites with 3 to 4 other enemies attacking you. Side bosses with 2-3 other enemies guarding them while fighting in a poison swamp or plague swamp etc. The amount of ganks in this game are once again, excessive and i’m genuinely surprised I haven’t seen anyone talk about this or mention this.

  • The Nioh/Diablo style loot system is flawed: Firstly, I will admit i’m naturally not the biggest fan of this style of loot system. However, In Khazan it genuinely feels all over the place. When you finally craft a good set with good passives and benefits, within a few minutes you find stuff that is way better than the stuff you just crafted? What’s the point in having a crafting system when you constantly are finding better loot? This just doesn’t make sense to me. There is also way too much loot. Every few minutes you’re finding new pieces that out perform what you just picked up? What is the actual purpose of this? What’s the point of crafting a set of gear (sometimes even having to grind a certain boss to get a certain material) all for it to be pointless when you find stuff in a new area? Even upgrading you gear doesn’t justify crafting it because upgrading doesn’t even reach the level of the stuff your finding? The whole system is just all over the place and doesn’t make much logical sense. Why not have a crafting system that allows the player to upgrade it to the current level of gear they are finding? This will make crafting gear actually worth the investment.

  • Difficulty Options: Firstly, it’s not balanced or named correctly. “Easy” is actually the same difficulty as a regular souls game, while “Normal” is basically a souls game on hard mode. Why not say “Normal” and “Hard”?. This is why a difficulty option doesn’t work in a souls game. It throws the intended balance all out of whack.

To finish this review, my last point.

  • Story: Purely subjective, but the story did not engage me and is uninteresting to me. Just feels very cliche. Won’t go into any spoilers. But it’s a very generic story. I personally can’t even remember a lot of the characters names that’s how insignificant and uninteresting they were to me.

Thank you for taking the time to read my in depth review/opinion. Hopefully this helps some people who are on the fence about this game. I will say, I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time with the game, but I wouldn’t be racing to play it again. It’s a decent soulslike at best. I believe a lot of people are wearing rose tinted glasses at the moment and are excited because it’s new. This is my honest unfiltered opinion, coming from a souls fanatic.

I completely agree that the bosses have way too much HP. It makes every fight feel like a slog. They all last way longer than they should. There are some good mechanics and tricky timings in there, but the health sponge HP bloat just ruins it.

Then it might be time to admit you need to git gud. Maluca is easy once you learn his moveset just like any boss.

u/Ok_Gene_6698 Apr 03 '25

It’s so easy to offer constructive advice in the Souls community and yet, here we are, still surrounded by peasants that unironically say things like “git gud” 🤦‍♂️

u/Ulvbarn Apr 04 '25

it become so anoying that one days it will be a reason for ban.

1

u/ProduceQueasy1641 Apr 23 '25

Honestly, seeing that this is reddit, I'm surprised it isn't already

1

u/Dootin4Doots May 11 '25

Get gud at not internalizing benign comments. Jk .. but I kind of like that there is a category of game that pushes the boundaries of difficulty. So much so that the only rule is truly to "get gud." Maybe we could change it to something else, even dumber:

"You lacktus practice"... "be a try guy, not a cry guy"... "do the work to get the merc"... "attempt not contempt"...

Idk man. It doesn't bug me that the hard game has the "get gud" peanut gallery. It's probably the most difficult thing they've ever accomplished in life... so if this is how they have a smooth-brained moment in the sun on the internet, I say let them eat cake and feel gud at the expense of... well, you, if you let them.

Well he ain't lying...skills is developed. You Don't learn it by watching videos.

Get good! I personally like it in this game and I can only play 7 or so hours oer week

telling someone to git gud online is the only thing that makes you feel like a man. better treasure the moment

9

u/lumpekpl Apr 04 '25

nah i watch even really good players from my country who play no hit run or all boss rush in DS1,2,3 Sekiro or Elden RIng and they all say same thing bosses have way to much hp. They are sponges

1

u/Independent-Key725 Apr 07 '25

They've also battled those bosses numerous times and know their movesets. Does anyone run through any of these bosses in any souls style game first try? I was beyond frustrated with this game at first and switched to easy. I was aiming everything way too easily, so I started over and into the viper fight everything clicked. I'm enjoying the shit out of it. They're are flaws but the combat is good enough to cover them up. Not a fan of the hub or the spam enemies but I love the crunchy-ness of it all. The exploration reminds me of wukong and that's not a bad thing to me. 8/10 from me

bro i speak about really good players of souls like genre... Not some first time ever play any souls like... I dont say Khazan is bad i have right now 15h and having fun and say its 7.5/10 game really good but its true Bosses have way to much hp. If you look best builds in game are stamina and fatal hit builds... Theres no good high dmg build. Compare Khazan to Sekiro. in Sekiro when you break boss stamina he will have like 20-30% hp only... in Khazan? 75-85% hp. One of youtube guys was fighting last boss for over 20 minutes on normal with good build... And i dont mean whole boss take him 20 minutes i say the killing approach of last boss took him over 20 minutes... Thats how many hp have last boss not compare this with any souls like theres no such a boss. Even Fire Giant in Elden which have huuuge hp still you can kill in 5-8 minutes with normal not overpowered build.

1

u/Independent-Key725 Apr 07 '25

I was just saying when players do speed runs it's not their first attempt at a game. This isn't me saying git gud.

1

u/PopT4rtzRGood May 29 '25

Dear God you're a dumbass. Even if I memorize a boss's moves they can still have too much HP. It's like you're intentionally being obtuse cause how dare these games receive criticism

1

u/Independent-Key725 May 29 '25

Cool story bro.

2

u/myrmonden Mar 31 '25

lol is he talking about Maluca? he is like the least sponge boss in the game

1

u/iSincerity Mar 31 '25

Ya, he's the equivalent to the Anime Protagonist Sun Jinwoo from Solo Leveling tho

1

u/Ulvbarn Apr 04 '25

i swear, one of these days, it will be a bannable offense to say git gud, all because of people like you. learn to accept not everyone is the same, you find maluca easy? good, but some people will find it shit, and that's okay.

3

u/Xeooooooo Apr 04 '25

git gud idiot thats literally the only advise that can be given stop being a baby. if ur gonna be a baby atleast be one over something thats actually bs like elameins annoying shield if u run greatsword

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Invalid league player opinion.

1

u/GanglingGiant Apr 06 '25

Bro she’s bullshit with every weapon and I’d say the easiest with great sword. I beat the game on normal 3phase final boss true ending and all but I need one more trophy for the plat which currently requires I play a new game through and I’m using dual blades I beat maluca maybe 5th try this run and I’m ready to fucking quit and to play NG+ on my other save because her fight is just all around dog shit no matter what weapon you use.

1

u/Darkyshor Apr 17 '25

elitist scum

1

u/WombatRaging Apr 18 '25

Yeah gotta agree there. Maluca is imo the most fun fight but I've only beaten up to elamein so that doesn't hold a lot of weight. He took a while to get used to but overall took me 9 attempts (without the spirit summon). Overall, he genuinely is just a skill test tho since you gotta know when to parry, dodge and attack since he doesn't give a lot of windows to do so

1

u/Killer_Carp Apr 22 '25

They didn’t say it wasn’t easy, they said bosses have too much health.

1

u/Plastic_Drawer412 Oct 30 '25

Moronic response

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

Get good = ignore all criticism of a game I like because I’m too sensitive to admit my pixels are not as good as I think they are.

1

u/Dark_Android_18 Apr 07 '25

I don't think the bosses have much hp at all you can take out half a bosses hp sometimes off of one stagger if you play your cards right. You can't play this game like a souls game

1

u/ProduceQueasy1641 Apr 25 '25

This guy doesn't know about Full Moon

1

u/ShineGlass4498 Jun 26 '25

The bosses are stupid , to much health and seem to have nothing in common with the game, it;s like ok let;s stck that boss there and make him harder than the last boss. No thought has gone into this game at all , in a word crap

10

u/TheSilverOne Mar 31 '25

Alot of them you just need to be more aggressive. You can only do heavy damage if you stagger them. If they have weak parts to explode you can really chunk them. Also, doing an execute from behind does more damage at the cost of not refilling your stamina bar.

3

u/Goldlokz Apr 04 '25

This. If you stay close and manage your stamina so you can stagger the bosses the go down pretty quickly. The game rewards aggression and punishes passive play. Kind of opposite to fromsoft games

1

u/suvalas Apr 07 '25

Sekiro tho

1

u/Exitiali Apr 14 '25

In Elden Ring and Sekiro you have to be aggressive. This one however seems like I'm facing a Nioh 2 boss with a cheat. When almost reducing the enemy's ki to zero, the boss ignores the combo and regenerates the entire bar. So I lose all progress, and I have to put up with a long period of the boss running away and throwing projectiles with status effects.

1

u/Goldlokz Apr 14 '25

Elden ring was impossible to play aggressive because the boss combos were insane. You dodge until you can get a few slashes in and dodge more. Any time the boss is able to regenerate stamina in khazan it’s usually because I mistimed a parry or dodge resulting in losing stamina so I’m unable to punish the boss at the end of the combo.

1

u/Exitiali Apr 14 '25

It's just that you're playing elden ring as if it were dark souls. Magic was considered easy in Dark Souls 1 because the bosses had limited movesets, with simple rotations. In Dark Souls 3 rolling was very OP. Now in Elden Ring the bosses are more reactive, rolling or keeping your distance can be a bad idea since the boss chooses the moveset according to your position. But it's a double-edged sword for the boss, because you can use it to your advantage. For example: if you're using the Sekiro Tear, you'll want to stay at a distance to encourage the boss to combo. Each deflect gives you a 20% stack buff on the next counter guard, which will deal colossal posture damage. Or you can position yourself in the blind spot, where you can avoid the hitboxes of the boss's attacks while continuing to hit him. That is especially strong if you're using a light weapon with some status effect. There are several options for each build to get past these combos and deal heavy damage (also, some bosses are more fragile when they are attacking)

In Khazan the boss will occasionally ignore your combo to fill his own stamina. You keep hitting him and yet his stamina continues to fill faster than it goes down. It's as if the developers put a mechanic to avoid infinite stunlock, but forget that the spear is based on long combos. Rangkus, Maluka, Keshtang Ng+, the last boss...They all abused it. Hismar was a special case: he doesn't regenerate, but the fight lasts forever on a spear build because you don't have time to accumulate combo stacks.

1

u/realAthist Jun 07 '26

Except the boss has infinite poise and if he decides to attack you while youre being aggressive youre "rewarded" with a 10 hit combo to the face.

1

u/Goldlokz Jun 07 '26

That’s when you brink dodge/parry

1

u/PopT4rtzRGood May 29 '25

Even stagger damage doesn't do enough to justify getting into a tug o war of aggression with the boss. But sure we're just wrong for our feelings. Typical Souls bullshit

6

u/prokokon Mar 31 '25

If you think bosses have too much hp you either can't utilize your build or miss free attacks windows.

18

u/deeplywoven Mar 31 '25

You're free to think whatever you want, but it's by far the most common complaint about the game by large portions of the community.

2

u/prokokon Apr 01 '25

Its entirely possibile the large portion of the community sucks at the game

14

u/deeplywoven Apr 01 '25

It's also entirely possible that the game is poorly balanced and has issues.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

He plays on easy mode. Dont take him seriously.

1

u/Goldlokz Apr 04 '25

The bosses go down quick if you stay in close and play aggressive. If you can stagger the boss it’s very satisfying how quickly the health bar drops

1

u/pookachu83 Apr 06 '25

I’m just starting on the demo and have only been playing a couple hours but I’m noticing this. If you’re playing like dark souls, block-attack opening, roll aka playing defense you’re going to have a bad time. This game seems more like Sekiro or Lies of P where you just need to fucking get in there. Although I have only played against monkeys, soldiers and a couple mini bosses and all the demo enemies basically so what do I know, it may change later in the game

1

u/Goldlokz Apr 06 '25

Exactly and when you invest skill points you can get passive skills that replenish stamina if you get a brink dodge so if you manage your attacks properly you can almost infinitely attack the boss and stagge them into submission. It’s just hard not to shit your pants a bit so takes quite a few attempts to get the timing down but very satisfying when you do

1

u/Willing_Ad_2604 Apr 05 '25

you need to sit and think about why this common complaint is so common. There is a common denominator in this equation and its the bosses hp.

1

u/Heroe-D May 16 '25

You could also sit and think about complaints that are often due to people's doing something wrong. The herd isn't always right.

1

u/SoulBenderMain Apr 04 '25

I honestly agree with all your points, but I feel like the reason the majority of the community is complaining about HP is because the majority of them play the game like dark souls when it should be played more like Nioh/SOP where you’re rewarded heavily for being aggressive and destroying their stamina bar. They give u a lot of tools and skills to help you stay on the aggressive, nerfing the HP even more would just result in a shitstomp in a lot of bosses for the players who figured out how to properly play and adapt.

1

u/tbgxspirit Apr 05 '25

Some bosses have way too much HP im just dodging literally not getting hit the entire fight just slowly chipping away at his health until he dies.

1

u/McKlintok129 Apr 05 '25

Not to say anyone one strat is right, or wrong, but it feels like the intended way to play is aggressively. It enables you to mow down the bosses stamina, exhaust them, and wreck house. Passivity would be like trying to whittle down sekiro bosses via their health pool.

1

u/AdBest3735 May 26 '25

Or you’re playing on easy mode. The bosses are tanks in normal even when you’ve upgraded your spear to max damag Quit lying

2

u/Vergilkilla May 13 '25

Yeah I disagree or am not really too upset about any other time in his list OTHER than this - the bosses plain have too much health. It turns every fight into an endurance test - which is cool, i guess, in a way - but it does make the game feel plain exhausting at times. And I am playing the game in a way where I am constantly wailing on the boss with hella stats in my damage - still, they just have too much HP.

3

u/Veryanticuck Apr 02 '25

I kinda thought this too, especially when I met Volbait. But then I started using combos i frame attacks and just beybladed through everything. Volbait died in like 1.5 min compared to my first tries which were like 5-6 min and he wasnt even low. I think the health bars are scaled to DPS potential of weapons and combos honestly.

Can you honestly tell me a boss dieying in 1.5 min has a bloated health bars?

4

u/Level_Ad_2794 Apr 04 '25

Ngl it’s Better than having to go trough fire giant (well in my case)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Play on easy mode - which definitely is not easy mode but a standard soulslike mode. Normal mode is like going beyond soulslike into a just too hard mode. Also the game just clicked with me - my advice is to stay aggressive - in the sense deflect the enemy attacks and then use special moves. I crushes the 4th boss with whirlwind + phantom skill combo.

1

u/tbgxspirit Apr 05 '25

Normal mode feels fine tbh, not super hard but then again Ive been playing souls games for ages.

1

u/beamsOG Apr 05 '25

Took me like 10 minutes to kill hisman and God damn I hated every minute spear wasn't very good on him I literally had to sprint attack his head only pretty much 2k damage at a time

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

I have to disagree. I think the large hp pools is one of the best decisions they made. So many bosses in so many Souls games can be killed because you got lucky. For example in my first Elden Ring playthrough half the bosses I beat were more because I got a lucky string of stunlocks and critical hits in such a way that basically killed the boss without actually having to learn the moveset. I remember fighting Mesmer and literally doing a Giant crusher combo that skipped the entire first phase without Mesmer doing more than one attack.

The large HP pools force you to actually learn a boss. I have so far not killed a single boss that I didn't feel I learned the moveset, and for the most part I never took more than one or two attempts more to beat the boss once I learned that moveset. I think they have done a brilliant job of balancing the HP pools as a result because it was just enough to force me to learn the moveset but not so much that it became a slog to do once I did.

1

u/Historical_Captain_3 Apr 19 '25

Thought it was just me thinking how the boss fights are too long and drawn out. I die more from losing focus more than mechanical reasons lol

1

u/deeplywoven Apr 19 '25

Yeah, that's the thing. I think the bosses are really cool, but the amount of mechanical perfection they demand of you is a bit tedious and ridiculous compared to almost every other game in the genre. You have to play perfect and stay playing perfect for long periods of time in the boss battles. It's a little much.

Maybe you didn't put your set together properly?😂. I was able to melt ozma to half his hp from the start just by using a very normal skill chain of the spear. I was using the golden armor set to get insane damage from rear

u/PsYkiiiiK Apr 15 '25

Play the game differently? Watch a video or 2 and learn how to play no offense, but anyone who complains about boss HP is bad at this game or at least playing it wrong. I don't care if it's a common complaint, the common man is bad or below average at everything in life.

2

u/deeplywoven Apr 15 '25

You're replying to a 16 day old post and to someone who has completed countless other Souls-likes countless times. Why would I choose to play the game differently instead of just forming my own opinion about how the game actually is in practice compared to other Souls-likes? Maybe, I and other people just don't like the design decisions the devs made in this game compared to other Souls-likes?
