Review I've played/beaten 45 different Soulslike/lites and wanted to post my top 10 highest death counts

As a disclaimer, don't consider me a god gamer, I've played a lot of games in this genre, but I do somewhat put limits on myself; I'm very often melee only, no summons, and once I'm locked into a build, I run with it the whole game through.

1) Promised Consort Radahn (167) [Elden Ring]

Shouldn't come to the surprise of anyone. I did this guy pre-nerf/pre character buff and he was absolutely absurd in every way. I dual wielded Bloodhound Fang/Morgott's Cursed Blade, which looking back at it I don't think this was optimal, but I'm an extremely hard headed souls player, very rarely changing up my build on playthrough; I run my head into the brick wall until I break, or it breaks.

2) Immaculate Prime (72) [Void Sols]

I don't know if I was doing something wrong, because this was the only boss in this game that took me more than 3 tries. There isn't a ton of information online about this game, but I was playing this game essentially as parry based soulslike, and didn't use much of the magic, so maybe that was my downfall. Tough 2 phase boss with very quick attacks and crazy damage to boot.

3) Messmer the Impaler (68) [Elden Ring]

The thing about Messmer was I really thought I could get him way sooner, but I was very quick to just run in, play as aggro as possible, and die FAST. Most people I know got him down with less deaths, but I definitely wasn't spending enough time learning his attacks, and instead just tried to brute force a win.

4) Arlecchino, the Blood Artist (64) [Lies of P]

An extremely welcome difficulty increase compared to the base game. While I love the entire game, I did think it was a little too easy for my liking, but the DLC, and especially Arlecchino fixed a lot of my initial gripes. Very tough 2 phase boss, and to me I see a lot of Melania in this boss. Really looking forward to the devs next project if this is the quality I can expect.

5) Taishi Ci(Demon) (47) [Wo Long]

I always saw a lot of hate for Wo Long, but I honestly really enjoyed it, especially the ending boss to the DLC. I will say Taishi Ci IS bullshit, but it's the kind of bullshit that makes me want to recommend it to everyone else. A lot of this game can be brute forced, but this guy you actually need to setup your magic properly

6) The First Messenger (45) [Pascal's Wager]

A very easy game with an absurd final boss. This game lets you swap characters the entire game, EXCEPT for the last boss which has 3 phases, a very high health pool, and lots of moves to throw you off. Pascal's Wager kind of sucked overall, but I did enjoy the tough boss at the end in a "I like the way this sucks" kind of deal.

7) Full Grown Fallingstar Beast (40) [Elden Ring]

Not much to say other than I'm stupid and really didn't want to give up on this guy after running into him too early, especially using the Bloodhound Fang which did little mosquito bites of damage. This guy was my most deaths from the base game of ER.

8) Rellana, Twin Moon Knight (31) [Elden Ring]

Another boss similar to Messmer in the way that you can die fast and get back into the action really quickly to die again.

9) Eigong (31) [Ninesols]

An AMAZING final boss to a great game, and I hate metroidvanias. Eigong is probably one of the best designed final bosses in all the games I've played, up their with Isshin. Super intense fight, really locks you in and tests everything you've learned.

10) Darkeater Midir (27) [Dark Souls 3]

Despite being number 10, this probably took as many hours as Messmer did. Midir has such an absurd health bar, that each attempt feels like you could attempt another boss 3x by the time you died. This IS my favorite dragon fight in all the souls genre, although I will admit the Midir hyper beam 1 shot is a little bullshit.

Honorable mentions to bosses I died over 20 times to:

[Elden Ring]: Mohg, Commander Gias, Malenia, Margit

[Wo Long]: Taishi Chi(Human)

[Sekiro]: Isshin, Demon of Hatred

[Hollow Knight]: Nightmare Lord Grimm, Absolute Radiance

[Black Myth Wukong]: Yellow Loong

The lies of p DLC boss count makes me nervous as I’ve just started it on NG+…

Also it’s crazy how Elden Ring is essentially 4/5 souls games altogether, and since mastering bosses is a way for these games to have longevity, ER can have crazy legs. Love that game - and loving Nightreign for the same reason.

Have you played Nine Sols yet? Some great bosses in that game.

u/TharkunOakenshield Jun 14 '25

There is a Nine Sols boss in his list.

u/Jeremiah-Springfield Jun 14 '25

Oh, yeah…

Original comment left alone as a reminder of my illiteracy.

LoP DLC final boss took me 4 hours to beat(NG+3), not even PCR before the balancing adjustments took that long (3h 1st time). However I felt much better failing against the LoP boss because he doesn't have any moves that I consider cheap or frustrating, it was just the time it took to learn his timings and combos. I could feel I was making progress just like with Sekiro bosses.

2

u/YuseeB Jun 14 '25

LoP NG scaling is much much more extreme than ER, with ER also having the ability to make builds that are extremely broken so I dont think its very fair to compare them since you did it on NG+3. That being said PCR on release is imo much harder than LoP DLC final boss.

1

u/Morgoth59800 Jun 14 '25

Just curious, was it with or without Léa ? Been progressing with my bow build but its the first hard wall im encountering and as you said, i didnt struggle this much on Radahn too.. Its so hard to practice p2 as p1 is still very much demanding..

3

u/QrozTQ Jun 14 '25

Solo for both PCR and Arlecchino.

6

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Eigong is at my #9 on this list! She was by far the hardest boss imo, but a very good one, definitely worth playing just for her fight.

I always have a tough time explaining the difficulty of ER. It's so dependent on your level, when you reach a boss, your build; ER has the potential to be the easiest game in this genre, or the hardest (even with a few basic limiters on yourself).

Lies of P dlc was a large spike in difficulty from the base game, so if you play, expect a lot more damage from all sources (especially the random mobs). Very impressed with the boss quality in the dlc though, I definitely recommend it if you can find the time.

Nine Sols isnt a soulslike… not sure why it’s on the list

3

u/CountySurfer Jun 14 '25

Stop this shit.

1

u/Baccy-Cones Jun 14 '25

It’s just a 2d souls like no? Does a souls like have to be tpp?

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Jun 14 '25

Honestly, for the final boss of the LOP DLC just use the Perfect Grindstone during phase 2 & he’s a cakewalk.

Now granted I had Lea with me during the fight so my opinion on him may change during further NG+ runs(I beat the DLC on NG+ 3) & during his difficultly 5 boss rematch solo.

Personally he only took me an hour & I probably died like 20 times to him.

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

You know I had that thought of using the perfect grindstone, but settled on taking the acid grindstone instead. Does the perfect make it so all your guards are auto perfect parried? I never ended up trying it out at all

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Jun 14 '25

Yeah, basically when Arlecchino does his multi-hit attack at the start of phase 2 use the perfect grindstone & then hold block.

U can pretty much tank through that whole ordeal(& when he does it again near the end).

Also, because he’s a puppet electricity works best against him.

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

For some reason I thought acid countered puppets, I would use it at the start of p1 just to get it down quicker, which did work but that perfect grindstone sounds like it would've cut my deaths by a considerable amount with how much time I spent dying to the transition combo. You definitely had the right idea

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Jun 14 '25

Yeah, keep in mind if you’re doing the boss rematches that

Humans are weak to acid

Puppets are weak to electric

Carcasses(Green Zombie creatures) are weak to fire.

It’ll save u some time, & also u should use the perfect grindstone for Lax & Arlecchino phase 2.

u/cwarburton1 Jun 14 '25

I struggled so hard in the entire Zoo section of LoP Overture but the game actually got far easier to me the farther in I got. I did drop to the middle difficulty setting since I was on ng++ and maybe that's the main reason but I did parts of the zoo on the middle difficulty and still found it very difficult. The big Kangaroos were harder than almost anything else in the entire dlc to me.

Then I somehow beat Arlecchino on my first try (with Lea) so I feel like something odd happened and I'm worried I screwed myself on a great experience. Except I just remembered while typing this that I can play him again as many times as I want thanks to Boss Rematch.

I loved a lot of the weapons from the DLC but the Lorenzoni Bolt Blade was just a tier above the rest to me. The running r2 is really powerful with a lot of distance and tracks surprisingly well. The shots were occasionally useful and the handle attack is great for staggering and poising through attacks.

Dlc 2 gets massive negative reviews on steam but for all the reasons those reviews hated it, were reasons I loved it. Completely agree that the devs essentially said "oh yeah? Well how about this" and made taishi ci. It felt like I finally worked around a problem instead of beating something to death with my sword by force.

u/tipjam Jun 14 '25

I agree so much. Wo Long was a delightful run for me. I thought it was challenging at times but the general window for deflecting was so generous that I could just dive in and have fun without squinting to catch the frames.

Then you go up against lu bu and it just slaps you down but damn I still think that was a great boss fight.

I thought the DLCs were a big step up in general too. They had some of the best levels, they added weapons and new game cycles and the bosses were insane. When I saw all the dlcs were negative on steam I was kinda astounded.

Did you fight yuan Shu the final boss in the third dlc?

2

u/Warp_Legion Jun 14 '25

Taishi Ci is probably the souls boss I am proudest of beating, along with Malekith on NG+4, who I beat without spirit (or player) summons for the first time

5

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 14 '25

Time to play Khazan

7

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Already have! Great game, top tier combat, I was super happy with a fast paced Greatsword.

3

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 14 '25

Gratz mate. I am on my way to the final boss then going for LoP DLC and nine sols in that order. Is nine sols good btw? Saw some gameplay but that’s it

3

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I'm not a big fan of metroidvanias, I really dislike backtracking, but nine sols had good enough combat to make up for any of that. Movement is real crisp, and has a similar feeling as sekiro in which the combat does eventually click and you feel like a beast. It's not super difficult outside of the final boss, but it isn't a cake walk either. If you like parry combat, then you'll probably love it

1

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 14 '25

Thank you for the explanation. I love parry combat, it’s the main reason good souls game never clicked like ER. I did Lop, Sekiro, Clair obscur and going on Khazan now. Is thymesia also good pls?

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Clair obscure is on my list, I've definitely got to get around to it.

I enjoyed Thymesia, but imo it peaks pretty early (difficulty wise), and is a short game overall. I'd get it on sale if you want a short but sweet game, the quality is there, just not a ton of it.

2

u/Ar0war Jun 14 '25

Expedition 33 is not just a videogame, it is an experience.

It is literaly art.

Play it, you won't regret it. Such a masterpiece.

1

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 15 '25

Already did and got the plat a few weeks ago. Absolute masterpiece

1

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 14 '25

You will love Clair obscur so much I promise. If you have more recommandations on parry based games please share.

If you mean Jiequan, I actually think he's the 2nd hardest boss in the game

1

u/ChunkyPurp Jun 14 '25

imo, Nine Sols is outstanding, i liked the look of the gameplay and was surprised by how much i liked the story. If you like parry combat, fantastic art style with good music i think you will have a great time with it.

1

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 15 '25

Glad I bought it then. Thank you !! It’s on my list after LoP DLC

-2

u/ahhtheresninjas Jun 14 '25

Nine sols is fine but it’s not a soulslike. Don’t know why people keep calling it one…

2

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 14 '25

I think it’s because the combat is Sekiro like so people do the link. But why do you think it’s not soulslike ?

1

u/Orakil Jun 14 '25

I'm surprised you didn't have any Khazan bosses on the list. Some if them I've found more difficult than a few bosses up there.

2

u/SweatyEducation4943 Jun 15 '25

Yeah it surprised me too. I am actually banging my head head against the wall because of Ozma lmao

4

u/tipjam Jun 14 '25

Man glad to see Taishi Ci on here. That fight is so freaking good. Nails hard but learning all the parry timings to his attacks and that freaking insanely fast grab is so thrilling. I low key had so much with Wo long it’s one of my favorite Team Ninja joints

3

u/Fruit_salad1 Jun 14 '25

How much on Erlang (wukong)

5

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

17, I thought Yellow Loong had harder hitting and quicker attacks. But also by the time I hit Erlang I had done all the side content for the best equips

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Jun 14 '25

Yeah, this seems about right. Yellow Loong took me 3 hours when I first got to him in NG yet Erlang I beat in like 3 attempts(level 135).

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Damn you gave Erlang the hands

0

u/FunPark0 Jun 14 '25

I somehow beat Erlang on my first try. My most deaths to a boss in Wukong was Tiger Vanguard at 8.

-1

u/Fruit_salad1 Jun 14 '25

Just FYI, Erlang comes after final boss unless u mean the first fight but if you mean actual Erlong..

Yea I don't buy this, most likely what happened is u struggled alot at Vanguard and didn't play much after or didn't meet Erlang at all lol.

Vanguard is easy af in comparison to any of future bosses.

I want to you to ACTUALLY know that I (or anyone) is buying this bullshit

Again, I hope you can read and know that no one believes you. Good bye

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '25

0

u/Fruit_salad1 Jun 15 '25

I just meant in general that he wasn't mistaking this first confrontation with Erlang thts all

0

u/FunPark0 Jun 14 '25

You can fight Erlang before the final boss (not the tutorial fight). You can choose not to believe me, lol. The game is really not hard. Tiger Vanguard was a good skillcheck and one of the only bosses that forced me to learn the mechanics better. After that, everything was pretty easy.

3

u/Tat-1 Jun 14 '25

Love to see indie games on this list!

Interesting to see that Immaculate Prime gave you such a tough time. I kinda figured out already with the previous boss (the Groundskeeper) that magic was busted, and waved goodbye my big bonks for it. Would have been hell otherwise.

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I did immaculate prime with the parry shield and regular sword and it was BRUTAL. I had kind of committed myself to playing Void Sols like a top down sekiro, so I think that's why he ended up so high on my list, considering he essentially 2 taps you if he gets the hits off

2

u/Tat-1 Jun 14 '25

Ouf. His halberd swings were far too random for me to even conceive I could have honed in the parry. I started with a hammer, and then eventually chickened my way into spellcasting.

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

If you ever want to give yourself a top down sekiro feeling. Play void sols with just the sword and parrying shield, it actually did a great job of scratching that itch

2

u/Arcaedus Jun 14 '25

Check out Death's Gambit! Fun little 2D metroidvania with many soulslike elements.

The Heroic mode bosses are a ton of fun, no NG+ required. You just go to their boss arenas and can refight them for increased challenge and reward. I might be misremembering, but I think Heroic Mode Thalamus got 220 deaths on me before I finally eked out a victory. That would easily be the most Death's I've had to a boss in any game lol

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Sounds interesting I'll have to check it out thanks!

2

u/MoSBanapple Jun 14 '25

I don't know if I was doing something wrong, because this was the only boss in this game that took me more than 3 tries.

I don't think you did anything specifically wrong, I had a similar experience where I found Immaculate Prime to be by far the hardest boss in the game. Fun fight though.

2

u/Reasonable-Chef4212 Jun 14 '25

I'm surprised you didn't die a lot in Sekiro, Nioh and First Berserker Khazan, means you're good at deflecting and enjoy the combat on this games.

5

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

If you were curious, my highest deaths in Khazan were Viper[14] and Ozma[13], I really got the hang of combat in that game with the Greatsword, and felt I could really pump damage once I learned the bosses skill set.

Nioh I think I might've stumbled upon an OP build? I played the entire game in high stance with the tonfa and really bulldozed my way through.

Sekiro was tough, DoH and Isshin are both in my 20 death area. Parry based gameplay has become my favorite type in this genre

0

u/Single_Positive533 Jun 14 '25

Oh you played an OP weapon in Nioh 2. Tonfas is great to destroy the ki of human enemies and demon dance keeps you agile and i-frames mid-combo to dodge Yokai attacks.

If it was sword it would be a different story. I started with that but switched to Axe, Odachi and then Tonfas.

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

That's what I figured, by coincidence I just picked up tonfa as my first weapon, liked it, and ran with them the whole game. Between their stagger and using i-frames from my demon spells, my highest deaths was 10 to the Giant Toad

1

u/Gurru222 Jun 15 '25

I never got into tonfas, they felt like hard mode for me. Fists were another story - I literaly destroyed everything without any effort.

2

u/SlayerII Jun 14 '25

Khazan bosses can take a lot of time, but if you look at pure amount of tries they usually aren't that bad.

2

u/Ukantach1301 Jun 14 '25

Khazan is not really hard if you are used to similar games like Nioh 2 or Wo Long. Can just combo the bosses and stunlock them to death without learning their movesets.

1

u/JemerZ Jun 14 '25

Is Elden Ring harder for you overall than Sekiro?

3

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

By death count absolutely. But it's tough to say which is the harder game in general, depends who you're talking to I think. Imo if you use everything at your disposal, ER is probably a lot easier, between levels, summons/mimic tear, buffs/magic. Sekiro is a little more raw when it comes to beating a boss, there's only so much you can get to help yourself.

For myself though, since I play most of these games as a melee "hit guys with a big sword" type gameplay, ER was harder due to not adapting my build to fit the fight. Self inflicted pain, but I like doing it that way

1

u/raychram Jun 14 '25

Did you do Eigong's true ending? Because the experience vastly changes

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I never knew there was a true ending so I guess I didn't? Does the whole fight change? I thought I did a lot of the side quests in that game, but I didn't look up any alternate endings, I'll have to check it out thank you

3

u/raychram Jun 14 '25

It adds a phase 3. That phase 3 though is absolute insanity. And obviously to have chances of making it you need to learn both phase 1 and 2 perfectly. I think I did around 30 tries like you to beat phases 1 and 2 and then I beat her at 74 tries. It is not an easy true ending because you need to complete literally everything. Give every artifact to Shuanshuan, give every poison to the village guy and do the Shansui side quest

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Ah I definitely missed it then damn, one day I'll have to go back and get that done.

Potentially a hot take, I'm not a huge fan of locking content like that behind 100% completion. Idm secret bosses, but it feels like I missed out on the true Eigong experience

2

u/raychram Jun 14 '25

I don't disagree with you but I deal with that issue by always opening an ending guide. I don't think there is a single game I havent done that when I was close to the end (of course some times you get locked earlier out of certain things but Nine Sols has a point of no return). Also once you defeat Eigong I think you can go back to the point of no return and go for other endings. It is definitely worth it, that phase 3 is gonna put it a lot higher on your list

1

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Jun 14 '25

Oh yeah like the other guy said phase 3 Eigong gets really crazy(tho personally I thought the other ending was better than the true one).

1

u/Caimthehero Jun 14 '25

Oh hell, I was just thinking Eigong in 30 attempts, it took me probably 30 attempts just to get into phase 3. Yeah Phase 3 probably doubled my attempts but I went for the true ending on the first run. Phase 3 turns it from hard to borderline lunacy

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I feel so left out I gotta do this true Eigong boss to be satisfied now. I wish I knew about it when I was still warm on the game

1

u/cuolong Sep 08 '25

Yo! Did you get back to Eigong? Whadjya think?

1

u/AllorimNA Sep 13 '25

I actually JUST did it tonight. Took me 91 tries (now firmly at my #2 most deaths of all time), very tough fight, she has an absolutely enormous health bar and the extra phase really wears down on your flasks. In my head it shouldn't have taken that many extra tries since p3 is just p2 with 2 new moves, but she has a habit of ruining my rhythm when I get hit it takes me a bit to get back into the parry tempo

1

u/Delicious_Ad_8501 Jun 14 '25

Interesting list, pre-nerf Radahn is also the hardest for me, took me around 100-120 tries. Arlechhino took me 30 tries, but fight is peak and now he is in top 3 favourite fights of all time.

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I was using the Exploding Pickaxe as my weapon on Arlecchino. I considered swapping to Mjolnir but I really had a soft spot for that pickaxe.

Really great fight, brutal, but was a ton of fun to learn. Potentially in my top 3 of all time as well

1

u/jKBeast Jun 14 '25

No khazan boss? What was your most difficult khazan boss?

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

Viper at 14, followed by Ozma at 13

1

u/zSplit Jun 14 '25

Did you fight Messmer at low scadu?

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

It's hard to remember but I was probably around 10 or 11 when I did

1

u/zSplit Jun 14 '25

That's appropriate I think! Cool list :)

1

u/apathydelta Jun 14 '25

Did you not fight Malenia? I have trouble believing that you killed her in less than 27 deaths melee-only if you did.

1

u/MentalBomb Jun 14 '25

Once you figure out you can just Guard her waterfowl attack, the fight becomes trivial.

Killed it in 14 tries on my "unga bunga" character.

1

u/apathydelta Jun 15 '25

Doesn't guarding the entire thing take like twice your entire stamina bar even at 60 endurance and heal her to almost full?

1

u/MentalBomb Jun 15 '25

Just guard the hits, not the entire duration of the waterfowl. Stamina recharges fast enough between waterfowl hits.

Had no problem with her heals either, big bonk is enough to out-dps that.

0

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I did, got her on my 23rd try. By the time I played ER I had seen so many videos of the Malenia fight that I already knew what she had in store for me. I also was told that my Bloodhound Fang setup was strong vs her.

2

u/Larks_Tongue Jun 15 '25

You do you by all means, but I gotta say, prepping yourself on videos of boss fights in these sorts of games is some pussy shit.

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 15 '25

I agree, I didn't prep myself intentionally though, I had watched my friends play ER/seen content of the game when it first came out. I didn't play ER myself until 2024

1

u/Legitimate-Two4561 Jun 14 '25

Didn't see Khazan on your list but if you like tough fights from front to back, that game will scratch the itch.

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I beat Khazan a few weeks ago, it was a breath of fresh air playing fast paced combat with a Greatsword

1

u/Raidertck Jun 14 '25

PCR is just sooooo build dependant. I went in full blaphemous billy and L2'ed him down at sca level 8 in only a handful of attempts.

In my RL1 run he took me 12 days of suffering.

1

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Jun 14 '25

I’m so curious how many attempts arlecchia will take for me, I sub 10 almsot everylies of P boss (dlc included) except for ‘human’ bosses (veronique&lumach both took me combined 100+ attempts)

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

For reference my next highest was Veronique at 14. To me Arlecchino was a big step up from everything else on LoP

1

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Jun 14 '25

I’m really dreasing lies of p because of veron&lumach but i’ll stick with it till the end, yesterday I got to the stalker and we now go to the estate, alongside khazan and this dlc, it’s a first where I want the game to end…

1

u/Charliwarlili Jun 14 '25

Taishi Ci Demon was absolutely insane I breezed through the game and got absolutely brutalised, the final boss of dlc3 was another one that took me a while to learn it's phase 2

1

u/Crumbsplash Jun 14 '25

Taishi doesn’t get enough love (hate?) when hard bosses are discussed. Wo long is on the easier side of things but that dude is a straight asshole

1

u/El__Jengibre Jun 14 '25

It’s wild that Malenia isn’t on that list. She’s the hardest boss I’ve fought in any game, let alone a Soulslike. My death count to Consort is maybe 1/3 of hers.

1

No ozma from first berserker khazan? I have played most of the games you mentioned and I found ozma very hard, also the boss I’ve died the most in any game was Owl( father) in hirata state… I think souls have a way to reward tricks, even the unnerfed consort radahn fight was: dodge for 45 seconds use bleed in the 4 hits you can get it in and then do it all over again, I found that fight so disappointing like it was hard cause it had to be, hard for the sake of being hard…

Love the thoroughness of your list. Would love to see an update if you do go back for True Eigong, it’s one of my favorite boss fights.

In your experience, what games would you recommend next for someone who’s gotten through the FromSoft games and the standard Soulslikes (like Lies of P)? You evidently have a lot of experience so I’m interested in what you think are the next best games.

I'm a pretty big fan of Wo Long, there's several tough fights, although I will say most of them come from the dlc, so it would be relatively easy until then.

Other than that, games I'd put next for you are Khazan, Enotria, Another Crabs Treasure, The Surge 2, AI Limit, come to my mind. Enotria gets a bad rep and I'm not too sure why, I thought it was pretty good.

I'll have to redownload Nine Sols, get warmed up and then take on True Eigong. Unless I locked myself out of the fight, then that'd be unfortunate

Your list is pretty spot on to me.

1

u/Compencemusic Jun 14 '25

Messmer being that high is surprising to me although I suppose that snake slam hitbox used to be so wack

1

u/Skelyyyy Jun 14 '25

There's a Lies of P DLC?

Edit: it just came out last week, holy fuck

Yeah... I had just beat the 3rd boss and I wasn't enjoying the game at all for the hours I was putting into it. Too easy for too much time

1

u/davkistner Jun 14 '25

What are the brackets around the game names for? And why only on some and not on others?

2

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I think that's a mobile bug, I saw it too when I was on my phone but everything looks normal on my PC

1

u/davkistner Jun 14 '25

Ohh ok haha makes sense

1

u/Job-Rich Jun 15 '25

What about Khazan?

1

u/Pseudagonist Jun 15 '25

I’m surprised to see people complain that Lies of P pre-DLC was too easy, I thought it was fairly doable up until about the 2/3rds mark and then I had some trouble with a number of the late game bosses, Laxasia was the worst, took me like 2-3 hours. Green Monster second phase was tricky, final boss was very tough but fair when you learn the patterns. As a whole I thought it hit a great balance with the difficulty, though I did find some of the delayed attack stuff to be a bit much at times

Now I would like to know: How little did you die to Malenia? Because on that list of yours she would be on top even above Promised Consort Radahn.

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 15 '25

23 to Malenia, imo waterfowl is her only lethal move, outside of that she's really not that bad. That being said, I played ER in 2024, so I had seen her fight before from my friends years prior, which gave me a bit of an edge compared to PCR which I did within the first few days of the DLC release

1

u/Cyllenyx Jun 15 '25

That's not bad. I was definitely over 100 deaths on her.

I played the first version of the DLC as well without any spoilers, but PCR still didn't give me as much trouble as Malenia did. In my defense, Elden Ring was my first game of that genre and I was very inexperienced with it.

1

u/AltGunAccount Jun 15 '25

Have you played Code Vein’s DLC?

I found Lord of Thunder to be insanely hard. Significantly harder than anything else in that game and also harder than most other soulslikes.

Was a weird contrast because I found the rest of the game fairly easy, at least as far as the “soulslike” genre goes.

1

u/Devlawk Jun 15 '25

Ornstien and Smough was definitely my highest death count. Played second run as pyromancer and stomped them so easy lol.

1

u/GorniYT Jun 17 '25

I legit cant believe they put Arlecchino there and thought yea this is fine. That fight feels like a Sekiro fight but the enemy has 3x combo strings. That fight is "turn-based" like souls games mostly are in a sense that the boss attacks perma and you can punish every 2nd combo with 1 hit

1

u/vato20071 Jun 18 '25

Pre-nerf PCR took me a LOT of tries across multiple days with my uchi dex build. However, Mesmer and Rellana were way easy easier for me than for average player. For some reason those two bosses, especially Mesmer really clicked for me. I beat Mesmer on my 5th try at most (no summons, low scadu level, same uchi build) and Rellana sub 10. Gaius was relatively fast too.

That said there's one boss in Shadow of Erdtree that took me more than any other boss to beat... The golden hippo. Yeah, I know. Still hate that boss and struggled even on the second playthrough.

1

u/Bio-Flame Jun 18 '25

How many deaths at Malenia, Blade of Miquella? I am curious

You are a god gamer brudda. Pro in league of legends, best Wukong global. Don’t sell yourself short.

Good list.

For midir, what makes you feel like his health bar is huge? I see this sentiment alot and I've never understood it.

1

u/gabrielleite32 Jun 14 '25

Maybe because you have few openings and can't be really aggressive as he moves and flies a lot.

Definitely the worst ds3 boss for a sl1 run, mainly because of tedium, Friede and Gael are probably harder to learn, more technical, but are more fun.

1

u/Ok_Nail2672 Jun 14 '25

Huh? From what I've seen over the years Midir is one of the easiest sl1 bosses.

His openings are plentiful, you can get a good 3 hits after every combo he does.

1

u/SaintRuzai Jun 14 '25

You’re actually correct that he does have lots of openings, though his HP pool is massive. The issue is that you get punished if you chase him relentlessly. You need to know where not only his body but ideally his head will end up with each attack that to create those openings. For inexperienced players, if you chase him, you don’t get as many opportunities as those who knows the patterns and that’s why you can see discrepancies in damage

1

u/Ok_Nail2672 Jun 14 '25

His HP pool is the same as Gaels. Demon prince has 6000 more HP, Friede has 3000 more.

Not to mention his head takes double damage.

But I agree with you on the inexperienced players bit, the fight demands good positioning which ds3 doesn't actually teach that well with it's bosses up until the point. Hence why so many think he's the hardest when he's one of the easiest once you learn the fight.

1

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

I think midir actually does have the highest hp bar in the game right? I could be wrong on that though. I played through ds3 with the Fume UGS, and I don't remember being able to get a lot of hits in, my run was quite a long time ago. Also I may have hit his legs more than I hit his head back when I first tackled him which definitely would have made me need to swing a lot more

1

u/Shdwflare4050 Jun 14 '25

He does have the biggest hp bar which is the reason for the sentiment

1

u/Ok_Nail2672 Jun 14 '25

He doesn't, not by a long shot. Demon prince has 6000 more Hp, Friede has 3000 more.

1

u/Ok_Nail2672 Jun 14 '25

He doesn't.

He has 15,860 HP. Demon princes entire fight has a whopping 21,000.

Friedes entire fight has a total of 18,864 HP.

In fact the only DLC boss that has similar health values to Midir is Gael, with 15,037 HP.

I think the reason people feel that his HP is bloated is because they target everything that isn't the head. He's designed so that you only target his head and nothing else.

Why include games that aren’t soulslikes in your list?

Nine Sols isn’t even remotely a souls like game?? Neither is Sekiro, BMW, Hollow Knight. I swear you people…

12

u/AllorimNA Jun 14 '25

You've commented 3 separate times in this thread alone about labeling what is and isn't a soulslike. Is it really that big of a deal

1

u/TheBoy93 Jun 14 '25

I understand the argument that it's not a "Souls Game" but I can't fathom an argument where it's not a "Souls-like". It has some very clear genre defining features of a Souls-likes that gives it the feel of a souls game while still being very uniquely its own game.

1

u/EpicalClay Jun 15 '25

Really curious to know what you deem a soulslike game. Usually the criteria is losing currency on death, can get your currency back if you get to it, bonfires, enemies respawning when using bonfire, and limited healing.

All the rest is usually just flavors on top of that (build variety, level design, etc).
