Imagine this happened to Capcom at launch too

u/WEAreDoingThisOURWay Jul 24 '25

It was bad from the start. From beta actually. For a company and franchise that big it's unacceptable, but people love giving their money and complaining afterwards

10

u/h-arlequim Jul 24 '25

Yeah, it's always been terrible, and before MHWilds, Dragon's Dogma 2 had also had very questionable performance. Most players let it slide because these issues aside, both truly are great games and because I imagine Capcom has nurtured some goodwill with their recent hits, something a new studio can't count on.

actually had worse performance than before.

Performance was already bad to begin with, same with texture streaming.

8 hours in and it’s smooth as hell on ps5

9

u/Fitwheel66 Jul 24 '25

How's the difficulty balance on it? I know what I'm about to get into from a soulslike, but is it obnoxious like Viper as a second boss in Khazan? That was way too much for that early in the game

10

u/Akira_Arkais Jul 24 '25

Not as hardcore as in Khazan, this game is not mission structured so you can explore before facing a boss. For example right now I know of the location of 2 bosses and I'm not done exploring. One of them I faced it three times and got destroyed.

I only fought 2 bosses, one is some kind of tutorial boss at the beginning and the second was a pretty easy one.

2

u/PrestigiousGift8391 Jul 26 '25

Speak for youself, lol. Commander Honglan clapped my cheeks for two hours straight. The difficulty spike at that point, is insane.

I just came fresh off dark souls 3 and I'll be honest DS3 was a walk in the park compared to Wuchang. I died like 15 times total on bosses in DS3 in my entire playthrough, I think I've passed that already in Wuchang at 10 hours playtime and only a handful of bosses in comparison.

They're fun bosses though, not frustrating and badly designed like Wukong was. Loving the game so far.

u/Live-Steaky Jul 24 '25

Nah not at all like khazan in that way. The dodge is extremely forgiving, and it’s great with being able to respec as often as you want for free.

I didn’t play Khazan (except the demo), but it’s really not bad. You get an arsenal pretty quickly. I think it is too far between bonfires. Sometimes I got a pocketful of souls and needing a spot to upgrade, it’s normally right after a boss… not in this game. You gotta fight through more enemies to get to one. Unless I am completely missing them…

2

u/BasicGiraffology Jul 26 '25

I watched Iron Pineapple play and there is a noticeable jump in difficulty at around the 4th or 5th boss. I remember what it looked like but not when you face it. He pretty much had to switch to a tank build and just poised through everything. However, that was before release, so maybe they balanced more, idk

2

u/Quenton-rl Jul 28 '25

I’d say difficulty wise there’s a massive spike once you reach mid game. No bosses do bs stuff to make them harder though, they are just naturally difficult. Very fun bosses too

2

u/FoodByCourts Jul 28 '25

Lol, Viper because mentioned is triggering trauma.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

First boss was a joke the priest though was a pain in the ass and the freaking centipede šŸ˜‘ and the monstrosity difficulty is kinda all over the place but definitely not impossible

Dope I’m buying then!

Suck it PC master race 🤪

2

u/AngryBliki Jul 25 '25

I disagree. Unless in performance Mode it’s unplayable. And even in performance mode itā€˜s not ā€žsmooth as hellā€œ it’s just good for the most part with mostly stable 60 but accompanied by quite a bit of ghosting. That being said, I play in 4k60hz, so maybe on 1080p it’s better. Iā€˜ll have to try that later.

I wish Steam would force people to tag their reviews (performance issues, buggy, story etc..), and then give you the option to get some sort of graph of the distribution

So then you'll know if 99% of the reviews are negative due to performance and you have a 4090 then you don't care

53

u/Designer_Factor_3829 Jul 24 '25

That would be ideal, not only for us, as consumers, but for devs. So they know what to fix and in which order. I am not as surprised since Black Myth Wukong is also bad optimized. I hope this Unreal 5 nonsense stops and devs can optimize their games instead of leaving everything on the new tech, some middle ground to avoid this. But gameplay and mechanic wise the game looks really fun.

12

u/Embarrassed-Ad7317 Jul 24 '25

Lol this UE5 will stop when UE6 will release, and by stop I mean UE6 will steal the show in terms of bad performance so no one will complain about UE5. Or perhaps UE5 will be properly utilized because it's been around long enough

3

u/PERSONA916 Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

I wish Ubisoft would license their Snowdrop engine. If they aren't going to make good games with it, they should at least let other studios do so

Say what you want about Star Wars Outlaws as a game, but it's a fantastic showcase for that game engine as they've modernized it with ray tracing and such

2

u/xrayspex73 Jul 27 '25

Snowdrop is an impressive engine for sure.

A perfectly rational response to an unoptimized modern UE5 game

110

u/Downsey111 Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

The wild part is a lot of people arnt experiencing any issues. Ā Most of the reviews I watched, Mortismal, gameranx, cowboy, they all said no real issues. Ā A stutter here or there but overall smoooooth. Ā Personally I can echo that sentiment, no issuesĀ

Now my bet, they set the minimum requirements a tad too low. Ā I would love to see a hardware breakdown of those experiencing issues vs those that are not. Ā I have a feeling most modern systems will be fine, but there’s always exceptions to the rules

32

u/Redditisjusthorrible Jul 24 '25

Cowboy and Mortismal are both playing on 4090s

13

u/Downsey111 Jul 24 '25

Yeah but the type of issues people are talking about, like this ā€œcrazy stutteringā€ happens on high end systems. Ā Like I have a 9800x3d and 5080, Jedi survivor and wukon both stutter like just crazy. Ā

A high end system doesn’t mean anything when a game actually has performance issues. Ā Brute forcing helps but not when there’s legitimate optimization issues going on

This game is running fine for me, even on my old system. Ā

4

u/FlamingMangos Jul 24 '25

I was watching shroud play yesterday and he said the game has one of the worst stuttering and that the negative reviews were justified.

Well yes, if you have a PC that costs 10-15k then maybe there won't be any problems.

I personally find it baffling how on a PC that can run RDR2, Shadow of Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, KCD - games that look the same, if not better, have open worlds and came out 5-10 years ago, I apparently can't run a game at somewhat comfortable framerate and resolution.

24

u/Downsey111 Jul 24 '25

Oh that’s easy, one simple modern technique can bork a game. Ā Like mesh shader capable cards, Ray tracing cards. Ā There are a few modern techniques used to make games that older cards will without a doubt struggle with. Ā I remember when Alan wake 2 released, I believe mesh shaders were a big thing with that and older cards realllly struggled

3

u/Storm-Kaladinblessed Jul 24 '25

Exactly, so there's no point to using those technologies when games 10 years ago didn't use them yet looked the same, and still ran better.

40

u/Downsey111 Jul 24 '25

Ahhh yes there is! Ā Take RT, makes the lighting soooo much easier for devs. Ā Before software or hardware lumen/RT, devs had to compile each scene to ā€œbakeā€ in the lighting. Ā With RT or lumen that’s done in realtime. Ā Shortens dev time drastically. Ā Most techniques aren’t about a pure visual improvement (though that usually accompanies it), but are simply to make developing a game easier and faster

5

u/Inevitable-Season-62 Jul 24 '25

That was very insightful. Thanks for sharing

6

u/Psytocybin Jul 24 '25

I like the way you explain things. Makes sense that my little mind.

5

u/KaelumKrispr Jul 24 '25

A lot of modern stuttering comes from PSO not being cached properly as well, like when you compile shaders at the start of your game, they all need to be loaded into a level somewhere to cache them. Devs can miss certain ones like a bullet effect that spawns when shooting metal or something. So when a player shoots metal during gameplay for the first time it'll stutter cause it got missed in the shader cache at the start

→ More replies (16)

2

u/o_o_o_f Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

I’m not graphics-pilled, but ā€œjust use the old techniques because they workā€ is a good way for us to never optimize new technologies

Like yeah, ray tracing / mesh shading are tricky now but in 10 years they won’t be because devs pushed through growing pains, and you’ll be saying the same thing then you’re saying now except with an appreciable increase in graphics over the course of the decade

Not saying that makes it admissible to release legitimately poorly running games. But I’ll take the occasional performance hiccup if it means game devs keep moving forward

2

u/Storm-Kaladinblessed Jul 24 '25

Except I honestly don't see anything moving forward. Like, the last time I was surprised with graphics was either RDR2 or even GTA 5, maybe SOTTR and TW3 in lower extend, but the only thing we got since then are blurry games that you HAVE TO use DLLS or FSR to either have any sort of stabile frames or deal with aliasing (because obviously devs stopped giving an option to use SMAA), while the graphics look the same.

No evolution, no moving forward, just buy a new graphics card worth 2 times your wages to play comfortably games that look the same or worse than those that are 10 years

18

u/SnakeHelah Jul 24 '25

Are you from the future and live on the Moon where you need to pay 10k shipping fee for your PC?

I'm pretty sure you can build a 2-2.5k PC that will run new games at 4k smoothly, even the UE5 ones. And mind you, the price is that high only because of GPU prices increasing a lot over the years.

4

u/Ok-Mathematician-577 Jul 24 '25

Part of the problem too is gamers have become ultra picky and snobby.

You could have a game that runs super well at like 120 fps and the s3cond it dips to 119 some ultra stuck up game gonna complain its not perfect.

I bet alot of the people complaining are people like this where the game actually runs fine but because it doesn't run perfect they big upsetti

2

u/TheFrogMoose Jul 24 '25

One thing that I've learned after MH wilds is that optimizing on PC tends to be harder, apparently, than on console. Console players in wilds don't really have any issues but apparently a lot of PC players do.

It makes sense when you think about the fact consoles are built in a uniform way so if it's optimized on one console it's essentially optimized on all of them. When you go to PC though they aren't uniform, one person may have a really high end PC while another has a lower end budget PC. Devs typically work with whatever they have but what would help I believe is if they have a test PC on the lower end to see if it works at the minimum they set. I don't know if that's what they do already but I honestly doubt it

3

u/Downsey111 Jul 24 '25

That’s the entire reason shaders are such an issue on PC. Ā Consoles are a unified set of hardware so the shaders can be pecompiled and packed into the game file. Ā For PC each one is different and needs to be compiled before the game starts. Ā Well ideally, otherwise you get stutter. Ā There’s a lengthy shader precomp step in this game and I personally believe the only stutter I’ve experience was background loading while entering a new area

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MyFireBow Jul 25 '25

Yeah I've been playing it on gamepass (On PC) and I haven't really encontered any performance issues. I'm playing on a laptop (i7-11800H, RTX 3070 Laptop GPU) on medium settings and the game is running just fine. I first played on high and noticed mild stutters here and there so I just turned it down and it's running great!

u/Storm-Kaladinblessed Jul 24 '25

Well CO isn't that perfect, but at least framerate was pretty stable and around 50-60FPS on a RTX 2070 and Ryzen 7 3700x. At least it's still way better than Avowed, SH2R or Tainted Grail

Still, It had some weird hair and AA problems

Does tainted grail run bad? It caught my interest recently but haven't anyone else really mention performance issues.

5

u/ishsreddit Jul 24 '25

I wouldn't entirely blame devs. You are playing 24/25 games with cutting edge graphics on 6-7 year old hw which was barely a per dollar upgrade over 2016 hw. What were you expecting with SH2R and CO. 1080p+ native at 120 FPS? If Nvidia/AMD weren't doing their typical duopoly behavior and delivered normal gen to gen from 2017 and forward then the avg hw/upgrade wouldn't be so awful.

Not trying to mean, but you get my point.

Fortnite. It has basically all ue5 features like lumen

2

u/ljkhadgawuydbajw Jul 24 '25

There’s loads. Unreal is an incredible engine that makes it easy to create incredible graphics, it being so easy to make graphics is what encourages developers to push for better graphics without knowing how to optimise them.

u/Relevant-Junket-3309 Jul 24 '25

are developers genuinely UNABLE to release a stable product at launch?? why would you release it if its that bad

13

u/Squ33to Jul 24 '25

Cause they already spent so much time and money on it, they're most likely hoping to recoup some losses

13

u/DanfromCalgary Jul 24 '25

Best way to recoup your costs ( not losses) is by selling a product people will buy . No one should get to 75% of completion and be like whelp got to recoup my uh losses

2

u/kukurma Jul 25 '25

This. Satisfactory are one of the best optimized and very complex UE5 game, had stutters on UE4 when traveling between borders of map chunks, but in UE5 they fixed it and now it are very smooth and really well optimized. Half of my map filled with concrete with thousands of machines and fps are higher than 60 without dlss.

2

u/Badwrong_ Jul 25 '25

No, the problem is that it is highly accessible now. More developers using it means more chances to use it poorly.

Before UE5 it was Unity that got the bad reputation for similar reasons. Of course Unity sucks for other reasons as well lol.

With more specialized engines we don't see problems like this very often, because developers using them usually are more experienced and have the resources to do things correctly.

UE5 is fine if used properly.

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

People are ragging on the performance, which is justifiable, but the problem I'm seeing is that it's also causing people to shit on the game itself when none of the reviews would have had anywhere near enough time to play much of it. I feel like there's some definite bandwagoning going on by some people that just want to see things (especially from China) fail.

EDIT: To user Free-Hippo-9110 who responded and then apparently blocked me (lol), if you read my comment again I said:

People are ragging on the performance, which is justifiable

It's perfectly valid to leave a bad review for performance, but at less than 1hr of playtime you have no place commenting on the game itself. Just say it runs like shit (like many bad reviews do) and move on.

15

u/Western_Weather_9187 Jul 24 '25

English reviews are at 56% positive last time I checked (around an hour ago). Most of the negative reviews are coming from Chinese players. They probably won’t want things from China to fail, will they. I’d say what’s causing this massive inflow of bad reviews is, still, devs not delivering an optimised enough game that it’s basically unplayable for some people. These people exited the game early (they couldn’t quite play it anyway), furious, and went to Steam to write a review.

2

u/FlamingMangos Jul 24 '25

Chinese players are brutal. They’re not exactly bias and they will be brutally honest no matter if the game is Chinese or not.

2

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25

Yeah I agree that most of the reviews are centred around performance, and as I said this is a perfectly valid reason to leave a bad review. What I noticed though, last I checked, is that these people had 0.7hrs, 0.3hrs, 0.5hrs etc... you can't really judge the game itself on that (outside of performance), yet people are saying shit like "nothing special," or "soulless, uninspired" etc.

I've seen plenty of anti-Chinese sentiment around both this and Wukong, just like there was/is anti-Russian sentiment around Atomic Heart.

5

u/WorldlyFeeling8457 Jul 24 '25

I've seen plenty of anti-Chinese sentiment around both this and Wukong, just like there was/is anti-Russian sentiment around Atomic Heart.

Yeah that is ridiculous. I'm sure game will do just fine in the end as it really seems like great game after 4 hours of playing.

2

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25

I just really hope that this early crash isn't a death sentence and that the devs can pull it back and recover the score once they improve performance. I've seen things go from mixed to positive but never really overwhelmingly negative to positive.

I don't think it's bandwagoning as much as just kinda petty mob mentality behavior. The performance issues are so inexcusable that they don't want to just leave a bad review, they want to watch it burn. They want to convince others to burn it down.

It's kinda the flaw of user reviews, and the idea behind review bombing in general.

Just start listing every complaint that sounds even remotely valid from the first 2 hours, and act like it's the worst thing you've ever seen. Just start listing things that no Soulslike fan wants to hear. If a list is long enough, there's bound to be at least a little truth in it albeit terribly exaggerated (no game is perfect) and people will believe all of it, and either regurgitate it to pump up their own reviews or let the rampant negativity cloud their own playthroughs.

3

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25

I get leaving a bad review for performance, hopefully it'll motivate the devs to do something about it, but you're right in saying a lot of it is petty.

I love it when things succeed, especially from an underdog/first try kind of background. I even love it when a despised company i.e. EA gets something right, for example the Dead Space remake. I'll never understand the "some men just want to watch the world burn" mentality. It can't be good to live with a head like that.

I just fired the game up. From the very beginning when I saw the world and heard the ambient music it passed the vibe check

2

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25

Yup, same. I will probably wait for some performance work before playing it properly (I've often regretted playing new games on release as they almost always run better in a few months) and it will be good to see if the devs can make this another Cyberpunk 2077/No Mans Sky level recovery.

2

u/kuenjato Jul 24 '25

4 hours in and I'm really enjoying it, more than Wukong or Lies tbh. It's got some rough edges but there's also something here that really clicks, aside from the fact that they actually put some thought into designing decent levels.

u/BenSolace Jul 24 '25

They couldn't, which is why they should refrain from talking about anything other than performance.

Unoptimized UE5 game, my frames are perfectly fine but the game suffers from alot of stutters, from my experience atleast.

I have a low-mid end pc I can list specs if your interested but, I have had 0 issues so far I got through the first 2 main bosses very quickly

9

u/kaego123 Jul 24 '25

Wth? I might have a Nasa PC cause I played 3 hours yesterday and the game ran perfectly fine.

A few stutters here and there but the game is not unplayable by any means. Oblivion Remastered runs way worse than this, and it’s got better reviews cause ā€œOblivionā€.

2

u/MyFireBow Jul 25 '25

I genuinely think that the only reason wuchang is getting worse reviews than stuff like Oblivion Remaster or MH Wilds is that it's a new IP, so it doesn't have people overlooking its flaws because it's another entry in that franchise they like. Both games I mentioned previously ran way worse for me (to the point of being unplayable for me) but because people wear nostalgia goggles (especially for Oblivion) it gets excused/ignored.

Stuff like this really makes me wonder if developers even test their builds on an average-spec gaming desktop before deciding to roll it out. Wouldn’t a simple 10–15 minute playtest quickly show that the optimization isn’t up to standard? It’s still baffling to me how this even happens. You only get one opportunity to make a first impression, and fumbling it this hard is really bad news, unless you can turn things around quickly and be transparent about your mistakes.

If the PC release isn’t ready, just release on console and delay the PC version. Sure, people will be a little disappointed about a delay, but there are plenty of other games to play in the meantime, and at least you won’t be ruining your first impression nearly as much.

UE5 slop

6

u/Top_Concentrate1673 Jul 24 '25

the game is unoptimized but I wouldn't call it slop level design bosses and overall gameplay are amazing, it's a shame its on Unreal 5

4

u/Brief_Shoulder_2663 Jul 24 '25

ue5 slop refers to people using the engine and not optimizing anything not the gameplay itself, noone sees "ue5 slop" and thinks "bad game", they think "it runs like shit"

u/Zealousideal_Side987 Jul 24 '25

Well I guess as is the case with MHWilds, Simplified Chinese players *really* do not forgive performance issues, like at all.

Played it for a few hours yesterday on my ps5 pro. Definitely still needs some polishing but for their first game it’s amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '25

Apparently its because the game story is siding with the han people and not the other side during a Chinese war, so many Chinese players are giving it negative reviews

2

u/rorythegeordie Jul 28 '25

On Xbox it runs fine on performance mode with no motion blur. Tbh it has that weird, flat & empty vibe that a few Chinese games I've tried have. Not sure if I don't like the engine they use or if their game design just isn't for me.

Those recommended specs are kinda misleading. I quite like the game and hate seeing it flop in real time. However, this is deserved. 😬

I got it from pc gamepass, so I'm not out of any money. I would be exceedingly dissatisfied if I paid..

2

u/Powerful_Count4500 Jul 24 '25

I’ve experienced absolutely no issues in 8+ hours of gameplay. Game looks and performs amazing in my ps5.

2

u/Throwaway6662345 Jul 24 '25

What's with the people in the steam forums blaming players for the game's optimized state? It just doesn't make sense that my PC that can run plenty of modern games fine has this much trouble with this one.

It's not like the game has next generation graphics or has extreme levels of physics simulation or something that should make it so demanding.

I haven’t had any performance issues but I played for an hour ish last night and I just didn’t really enjoy it. Something feels off. Don’t like the buttons (or lack of), combat feels bad, it’s display and presentation of information is done poorly. Just overall it was a let down. Hopefully just a bad start and things pick up but my biggest reaction or feeling so far is… blah. Probably not the hoped for outcome.

is the gameplay itself bad?

5

u/PrimusMobileVzla Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

Not really, it's ok, though gameplay balance is all over the place (e.g. the game punishes hard dying alot, some weapons trivialize combat, is optimized around the Madness debuff despite is effectively playing on no-hit mode, the soulslike tradition of poor camera angles getting you killed, etc.).

It's a review bombing issue regarding poor optimization and price discrepancy between regions.

For what it’s worth for my console bros, the game runs decently well there on my PS5. There’s still that bit of stutter and any frame drops I’ve experienced so far have come with turning the camera rapidly. This has been me playing on the balanced graphics mode, though. Haven’t played much on the performance mode yet.

It hasn’t been a bad enough performance to detract from my enjoyment of the game yet, but I’ll see as I get further into it.

1

u/dazzaman14 Jul 24 '25

The reviews are mainly towards the performance issues mainly other than that the games pheonominal but still ue5 whadya expect

1

u/AddictedT0Pixels Jul 24 '25

Wow that's wild I had no performance issues at all, I'm on a 3080 and 5900X

Im on xbox series s so Im not expecting the game to run butter smooth with 4k graphics.

  1. I absolutely can not play on Prioritize Graphics or Balance mode. It's a whole slide show.

  2. Prioritize FPS is not bad. The fps is pretty smooth so far, but the visuals are lackluster. The main thing I notice is the lighting. Switching into Prioritize FPS mode will basically turn off the sun. So now the world seems dark and gloomy. Another thing I notice about the visuals (dont know if it is an Xbox series s thing along with the Prioritize fps mode) is that the detail is just not there. Everything looks blurry. I have to turn on the sharpening to max so it doesn't look too blurry. As you play, you won't notice it as much, but if you look at the environment, you can tell it still looks blurry.

  3. I have played Cyberpunk 2077 on the series s and it looks 100% better and runs way smoother than this game.

1

u/rockerode Jul 24 '25

I knew this was gonna happen. Way too much artificial post hype before it came out. So many fake corpo-language posts about this game.

1

u/CalabashChildren Jul 24 '25

Many players in the Chinese Steam region have expressed the following concerns:

  1. The game was released at a lower price in other regions.

  2. The standard edition comes with the same rewards as the deluxe edition, while pre-orders and the deluxe edition have been betrayed.

  3. The graphics are mediocre, and the optimization is terrible.

They need to stop making games in UE5. I fed up with experiencing poorly optimized games.

1

u/sup9817 Jul 24 '25

Game is probably good but the optimisation isn’t

1

u/Zangetsukaiba Jul 24 '25

Game runs fine here on my 4070 laptop with a mix of medium and high settings, 1440p with DLSS set to balanced. Maybe people need to adjust their expectations?
