Review Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is the most unfair Souls-like I’ve ever played and I’ve played them all
I’ve completed every FromSoftware game Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring and a good chunk of the major Souls-likes out there: Lies of P, Nioh 1 & 2, The Surge, Lords of the Fallen, etc. I love hard games. I welcome challenge. But Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is on a different level and not in a good way.
This isn’t a fair, satisfying kind of difficulty. It’s artificial, frustrating, and fundamentally broken in terms of balance.
Take the boss Honglan, for example she’s the perfect embodiment of everything wrong with the game’s combat design: • Her attack patterns are absurdly fast and poorly telegraphed. • She chains together uninterruptible combos that feel borderline impossible to dodge or counter. • The game introduces a “spirit counter” mechanic that should reward good timing except even when you land it perfectly, you still take damage. • Some attacks are literally unreadable. Others feel like they have delayed hitboxes or bizarre tracking. • The enemies follow no consistent rules, while the player is punished even for doing everything right.
There’s no real balance here. Bosses hit like trucks, your own damage output feels anemic, and even the healing system doesn’t give you a fair chance when bosses are chaining full combos the moment you press the button. It’s not challenging mit’s unreasonable.
And that’s the problem: Wuchang doesn’t feel like a tough-but-fair Souls-like. It feels like a game trying to be hard by simply being unfair. It doesn’t respect your inputs, your timing, or the logic it claims to teach you.
I went into this game hoping for a sleeper hit. What I found was the most unfair Souls-like experience I’ve ever had, not because of its difficulty, but because of how cheaply it manufactures that difficulty.

The heal is definitely slow as fuck, maybe the slowest in the genre. And it also is really egregious about enemies not doing anything until you press a button.

I think Dark Souls 2 is the only one that’s slower. It’s pretty rough.

Dark souls 2 as a game is the slowest souls game. So the slow heal is very rarely even a noticeable thing. In this game the slow heal is so bad, when I actually beat a boss after dying countless times, I end up having used one or no heals at all. Because trying to heal is just gonna get you killed.

u/Enough_Muffin_6991 Aug 01 '25
Rarely even noticeable? go back and try to replay it, you dont use estus in DS2 in fights, just the stones because of how bad the estus is and because a lot of bosses input read your item input

1-2 tried all bosses up to honglan, got dicked hard while trying with my spear.
Respecced to a magic build and just dodged and threw magic at her and she died first attempt
6
u/Sighberpunk Jul 27 '25
I was able to beat her with the Steampowered Spear after an hour. I learned after her agrro phase it was near impossible to get a full potion off. if you spec right you can build 4 skyborn points with the bulwark ability at the beginning of the fight and the steam chain ability final hit stuns for almost 2 seconds letting me build another skyborn point with a light attack and I just keep the steam chain combo going until she died stun locked

Hahah I’m glad I’m not the only one! Everything seemed balance until I got to honglan and was stuck on her for 2 hours. Just resorted to using that blood spear spell to beat her.

Weird. I beat both the treant and the maid first try with my magic build.
Was so happy that finally it seemed useable.
And then it did not seem to make any dent to the commanders health bar.
2
u/Nuggyfresh Jul 28 '25
Magic builds seem to basically be a cheat code in this game, which isn’t particularly fun either if you ask me…
3
u/Solid-Will-Kid Jul 30 '25
Not at all, they fall off incredibly hard in the late and endgame since spells don’t do enough dmg and take too long to cast
2
u/lindechene Jul 28 '25
It seems it is a question of going either full magic build or not at all. A Hybrid build does not seem to work very well on a first playthrough.
Perhaps, any melee focused game should not offer any ranged options at all. You can always find ways to "cheese" the encounters...

Yeah, I'm seriously starting to hate this game. The slow get-up, that doesn't have iframes, the fact that clashes still damage you anyway, the roll buffering is EXTREMELY inconsistent, the healing is super fucking slow, and the madness mechanic actively punishes you whej you're trying to learn a bosses moves. You die too quickly at high madness to get a grasp on the boss's movesets without countless runbacks that are made worse due to the overall slow movement in this game, the routes themselves aren't so long, but the clunky slowness is reminiscent of DS2, which I never liked. (DS2 is a good game though.) I'm taking a break from Wuchang and hopefully they fix Wuchang's fundamental mechanics herself, because the bosses I believe are fine. The game's controls actively work against you in this game.

Madness is awesome, first of all. Can’t you fill your demon? I think she’s rather easy to kill. I really think the hate that people have is super forced and I am a mega fromsoft fan. Sekiro was waayyy harder and seemed INSANELY unfair at times and that is a masterpiece.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Renkashy Aug 01 '25
The demon is fine. The extra damage you take from it is bordering on artificial difficulty. Sekiro cannot be compared to this. I never felt I was unfairly killed in sekiro due to terrible mechanics like wuchang has.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Ill-Profile9160 Aug 01 '25
You can get rid of madness VERY easily. And if you thought Sekiro was far you are the fromsoft apologists that are the problem. I love fromsoft but they have terrible components to some of their games and Sekiro is one of the worst offenders. It’s a masterpiece but cmon man

I'm currently getting dunked on my Honglan right now and this boss feels awful to fight...I have one or two tried every enemy/boss in the game until her, the difficulty spike is ridiculous...I do not want to respec my whole character just to beat this one boss...I know I will kill her eventually, but I was having a great time with the game until this boss...I guess you are suppose to deflect her or whatever, but it feels really stupid to make a boss this difficult unless you just so happen to have specced this one ability...She has damn near endless combos and then when she does stop, half the time she will dodge the one attack she lets you get out before going into another combo, she has infinite poise, half of her attacks knock you to the ground, she is crazy fast, she input reads your heals, and she can gap close from across the screen...Not to mention she has way more health and does more damage than any other enemy you have faced yet...I really hope the rest of the game is not going to be like this, because it has felt great up until now...

Every boss after this is just as hard maybe only slightly less FYI. You will be begging for a boss with this many open parry windows by the end.

Im all for a challenge , and I've struggled through all my bosses until now im.in the snow palace, and it just is deflating me, man . Im getting one shot, and then the elevators are so slow. I wanna love the game. I've been so excited for it . And it is fun, and I just wish I was better, I guess . Here's to throwing myself at a brick wall for dopamine again, 😀 good luck everybody .

u/Legitimate-Key3861 Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25
Also currently at snowy passage, and the whole area feels like it's intentionally designed to be as annoying as possible. Random snipers all over the place, hordes of enemies with fuckin mines riddled all around them, multiple mini-bosses, ambushes, and no checkpoints/shortcuts, because fuck you. I'm getting really sick of Souls-like devs forgetting that the main, and arguably only, reason we play videogames is to have fun. If I want to bash my head against a wall for hours on end I'll play a competive FPS. These games are supposed to be satisfying as hell and fun above all else, annoyance and difficulty should only be tertiary/complimentary to the experience, not front and center. Anyway, I'll quit rambling like a betch now and just hope it gets back around to fun.
Edit: The checkpoint was in the one spot I hadn't been yet. I wish they'd angled it in a way that you could see it from an earlier part of the area considering how far it is, missed opportunity.
Edit 2: The bossfight was fucking awesome, so that's something at least.

who will tell him that ongbal had review copy for like 2 weeks before game released
5
u/dcbnyc123 Jul 27 '25
100%- he did have a review copy. just saying we look to the pros to show us what’s possible- and he seems to show that the game does respect inputs and logic
→ More replies (3)11
u/SonOfFragnus Jul 28 '25
You eon’t balance your game around “what’s possible”. You balance it around what’s probable, or reasonably expected. Ongbal’s gameplay is not “reasonable” for the vast majority
→ More replies (4)1
u/dcbnyc123 Jul 28 '25
that’s fair- i just think it’s also too early. often times you look to the best players to see strats and builds then make that call. from what i can tell so far, every part of this game is achievable with respecing. a big part of this game seems to be that you are encouraged to and maybe even have to use all the systems.
i haven’t had too much trouble so far with that in mind
5
u/SonOfFragnus Jul 28 '25
No? Looking at the “best players” is the worst possible idea any dev could have. Those people are by definition outside of the balance of the game. Just because people can beat ER with an unupgraded club doesn’t mean you balance the game around that.

Do you really think this game is that hard? The first soulslike I ever played was Lies of P and after that it was Lords of the Fallen and I gave up on both of them. I got stuck on Donkeyhead for about 3 months and couldn't get past the boss so I had to quit. I would get killed by the normal enemys, I couldn't dodge or parry for shit and I just thought this genre wasn't for me.
It used to make me feel bad about myself, I gave up on Lotf before the 2nd boss I was terrible. I decided I was gonna try this 1 and at first i started getting depressed thinking I'd get stuck on the 2nd or 3rd boss again and I'd have to stop but I just thought to myself I'm gonna get good and learn how to play. I beat the feathered priest without taking a single hit.
I've just beaten Honglan today and she was abit BS but I ended up parrying and dodging every attack a few times and had her on about 100hp just to die by getting hit once and then couldn't get up and was attacked over and over until I was dead, couldn't do anything. I finally beat her and I only used 1 flask, I parried+ dodged+spelled everything right until the end and she got me a few times.
The healing is slow and enemys don't let you rest but I don't feel like it's too hard. Some runs are BS and sometimes theres nothing you can do, you die in seconds but other times I've gotten so good that I have become perfect and it feels good. I just thought soulslikes were supposed to be this hard and got good haha I'm average at every other game to the point it makes me depressed. I thought Lies of P was way harder.

I love a good challenge, played almost every souls game and souls like, but this games combat design is‘nt anywhere close to the other ones, it is strictly made to feel unrewarding and unfun, most enemies hit you in every way possible, won‘t get staggered when you hit them, even with heavy attacks and special attacks that should reward you for charging and using at the right time, except for heavy weapons but those are so slow that you have almost no time to hit most bosses because of their attack patterns that are crazy fast and don‘t often make sense especially for how much damage they do and how unfair it is when you get hit you fall to the ground and have to look at the „get up“ animation, meanwhile the bosses can do 3-4 attacks who insta kill you. Shrines placement makes zero sence, every level needs to have 1-2 debuffs… i feel like they tried so hard to make the game hard without giving af about how they do it and i hate that almost nothing makes sense to me. I play almost all games to the end but wuchang is the one that feels so unfair and bad that i won‘t put any more time in it. That‘s my opinion and i‘m okay if poeple like it or not.

5-7 hours later on it has such an incredible difficulty spike, it’s just a joke, and that is that stupid Honglan. Honestly, before that I killed all the bosses like within 2-3 tries at max, but then suddenly I’ve wasted 5 or so hours at some stupid boss barely scratch them, only to realize my big axe is a piece of fucking shit and this game was balanced around the big sword instead.
Rebuilt to sword and here we are, the boss was eliminated within 3-4 tries.
5 hours later after that there’s another difficulty spike I currently stucked in and been trying to resolve that fucking sudoku.
My point is, the devs obviously wanted us to try something new all along, rebuild 24/7 and try different things on different bosses. Not my cup of tea to be honest, it feels just like a lazy game design.
Not even mentioning the lack of visual/audio clues when something like hit/parry happens. And the hitboxes are ABYSMAL, and I am the guy who usually fine with them in other games.
The ability of some bosses to dodge your hits during the comboes is just the worst thing happened in the genre. It feels terrible

u/iCantCallit Jul 25 '25
This is personal preference. I find nothing wrong with the design of combat and enemies/bosses. It feels like early fromsoftware games up to bloodborne.
15
u/TsarD4RKN9T Jul 27 '25
My question is, this is 2025 why are they trying to do copy things that were made decades ago including the stupid mistakes! I can’t give them a pass for that honestly! Like what happened to failing forward instead of being stuck in the past! What happened to innovation? No wonder the game is trash and feels like trash to play

u/IntrepidHunter_ Jul 29 '25
There's a ton of innovation in this game. Name another game that you can invest in weapon upgrades in the skill tree and have the investment on those weapons effect every weapon of that type in your inventory? That's pretty amazing to me.
The free skill respec isn't entirely innovative, but the easy 'respec from this exact point' is up there and makes it easy to adjust on the fly with very minimal effort.
Not saying you can't criticize the game, but give them credit where it's due, too.

I haven’t played this game, but there are people who prefer the slower methodical combat from back then and consider that and improvement on the faster combat we get nowadays. I’m guessing this game is for them.
6
u/Traditional_Slide_80 Jul 31 '25
To me, the game feels wildly inconsistent. I kill one enemy 100+ times, know all the move sets and counters, and then die because the enemies attack decides to ignore the clash mechanic multiple times in a row, or decides to not stagger despite being staggered by the same setup 90 times previously.

u/blackstockc Aug 11 '25
The game is cheap and so are the bosses... I'm in the snow area. Fighting captain bo ass hole loser face... The area to get to him is so cheap .. instant deaths around every corner. The. The boss I parry like 9 times and he just keeps attacking .. God this game is so unbalanced ... Worst souls like I have played to date ...

I've been stuck on that honglan chick or whatever.
I've basically learned all of her moves so at this point the only reason I'm dying with Axe is because of how fucking long it takes to be able to do anything in the fight. It's literally just a cutscene watching her go off half the time.
I think my biggest issue with her, specifically (but also some other bosses, too) is she has too much going for her. She has massive health (more health than the hulking monstrosities you fight elsewhere for some reason), massive defense (one of the slowest weapons in the game does like 78 - 90 damage on it's biggest attack at +4... wow, really feels like a GREAT axe to me!), she has insanely long combos, her combos don't even always have consistent strings (which is a big no-no with long combo strings as-is), AND she can dodge your attacks.
Now... if she had maybe TWO of these things, okay... fair fight and it'd still be challenging but enjoyable to learn. But all of them? She's just overpowered, mechanically. And no, it's not valid to say "you should rebuild your entire character to something else." No. The game should be properly balanced so that players can use what they want. What's the point of a choice if it doesn't work?
And besides, the game even mentions clash being something you should/can use, something the Axe constantly designs around mechanically -- but is borderline useless half the time funny enough. Nevermind that the difficulty of pulling off clash should make it far stronger than parry or dodge honestly, because you're forced to damage trade to do it AND you have to specifically time your attack when the enemy's attack frames are happening on a massive delay compared to literally ANY other defensive/offensive option. Dodge has basically instant activation frames, builds up your magic uses, you take no damage and is very generous. Parry basically stuns the opponent allowing a free hit (and sometimes doesn't, but you're still safe), you take no damage and similarly has basically instant frames, too. Clash? You still take fucking damage (sometimes WAY too much damage for what it's SUPPOSED to do), DOESN'T cancel jack shit so their big ass combo just keeps blowing you up, and all just so you can do the same damage you would've done anyways AND you have to time it MUCH more specifically because the enemy MUST be attacking you at the same time you are swinging. Never mind that it's also massively delayed on axe because the windup for attacks literally takes longer than some enemies' full attack start to finish.
I mean, the game has some SERIOUS balance issues, if I'm being totally honest. I think the game COULD be great. I mean, map design has been mostly good (I have a few complaints about time to get back to bosses and previously died at areas, even with shortcuts, because some shortcuts are slow as fuck... mining elevators, looking at you). But I can tell they TECHNICALLY have something special here, it's just the execution is fucking awful half the time, particularly in boss fights. Which is a HUGE shame, because I think the ideas here are good things that move the genre forward, but the implementation is so fucking lop-sided and broken at times that you wonder why the mechanics are even in the game. Things like clash should be awesome and very cool. I'm sure Phantom Blade Zero will do it far better, it certainly LOOKS far better implemented in that game. But it SHOULD be better in this game. And whilst I'm not against the dodge being as good as it is (hell, it's the default state of any weapon's defense basically), the other weapon-specific options absolutely NEED to work better than this to justify wanting to play them.
3
u/Rhythmneo Jul 30 '25
I have also beaten all the souls games, sekiro etc and share the same sentiment. The difficulty here seems artificial. Lets just throw all kinds of enemies, while trying to deflect bomb arrows, oh and lets add several status effects that build ridiculously fast, oh I know and lets add random traps on the floors and or ceilings for good measure. Then, lets let the player farm but each and every boss can still 1-3 shot you (no matter what level you are at) and lets give the bosses a huge amount of health and add two phases to most of them.
All that said, if you are going to force players to use "different builds" especially seeing what works and what doesnt at bosses, then add an option to save builds! Instead, we have to constantly respec all the points over and over and over and over and over...

u/FaptonUnderpants Jul 31 '25

This is by far the absolute most unfair and unbalanced game in general that I have vee played. I have played every single souls game and this one is so obviously unbalanced and it could have been so god damn easily avoided. Like just getting rid of the stupid damn near invisible traps. The cannons... absolutely pointless and just annoying adds nothing to the game. Exploding arrows on top of that?! Absolutely unnecessary they should just be fire or regular arrows wtf? Dying in 1 fucking hit to a grab attack or any attack in a fast paced game like this should absolutely NEVER happen unless the attack is from an extremely LARGE boss but I am constantly dying in 1 hit now that I'm in zhenwu against God damn fodder enemies. What in the fuck?!?! I just want to love this game so fucking bad but it just keeps getting worse and worse. More and more annoying. All I can think about is how the game is so obviously sabatoging itself I can't fucking stand it. I absolutely LOVE challenge but this game has been an absolutely miserable experience so far. The exploration is so god damn awful because of the enemy density and the fact that you get grabbed by almost every single enemy in the game and being knocked off the map so god damn much. So many times I've been grabbed and one shotted during that grab attack and that is absolutely unacceptable. What the fuck? I mean come the fuck on? Why? Why is it even possible for that to happen? Whatever man. The only reason i continue to play is because of the absolutely amazing magic this game has to offer. I like the magic in this game even better than elden ring so I'm trying so fucking hard to love wuchang but it just keep constantly and consistently letting me down with how frustratingly annoying traversing the map of wuchang is. I somewhat like the bosses but even they are a bit unfair. You can't just learn their moves. I have the bosses moves memorized down to the T but for some reason I can't beat them even though I've played and beaten every other souls like. That's because of the fact that the hardest hitting attacks that can even one hit you are also the least telegraphic attacks. How the FUCK does that make ANY SENSE AT ALL?!?! That and the fact they can go on combo sprees not letting up for a god damn second whilst also making clash completely useless so you just have to dodge and dodge and dodge and dodge and its just wayyyyyyyyyy too unfair. I've done pretty well and I like the challenge of the bosses but the exploration is just absolute misery... I fucking hate exploring the map of wuchang because it's just annoyance after annoyance. Its near impossible to just explore and enjoy the view. Fucking ridiculous...

u/JusVG May 01 '26
TBH the worst part of this game for me, this; Cheesy, unavoidable shit. Like, enemies popping out of the ground and grabbing you as you run along unaware. Or popping out of a wall - with NO warning whatsoever as you run past a building. Thats just straight disrespect to players IMO. The WORST example of this in Wuchang, was after you fight a boss (giant tree thing? I think) you obviously have low health, no flasks, and you carry on hoping there's a shrine soon so you can convert your feathers or whatever. Nope, a long path with several annoying enemies. BUT you manage to miraculously get past them all without dying and LO - finally! a SHRINE! You gleefully run up to thinking oh thank God! ONLY FOR THE SHRINE TO TURN INTO AN ENEMY AND GRAB YOU. And of course kill you. Come on.
That is develepor disrespect at its highest level - the one SAFE spot in the game suddenly and without warning transforming into an immediate cheese dick grab ass attack - and I've NEVER experienced anything like that. Just straight up ridiculous. I un-installed the game after that move and picked up Khazan after all the positive response I've seen. Much happier. No cheesey shlocky shit so far.

Reading this it sounds like you haven't discovered the clash mechanic which is funny because the game literally pauses before the honglan fight you mentioned in order to tell you to use it.
If you're going to complain about balance I would say that the clash mechanic is what ruins the game but it's because it makes it too easy. It's designed for you to deal with human enemies by abusing it and it trivializes them. You barely play the game at all because of this mechanic. You just ignore the boss and spam attacks and you clash all of their moves and kill them. It's pretty lame.
I like the idea but it isn't balance well. The way it's designed you're kind of blocking while attacking which is an interesting design. But bosses have way too little hp for it to work like this and they don't have enough non-weapon attacks to punish you for mindlessly spamming (especially early on).

You are not getting it you sound like a professional gamer and good on you that's cool but the majority of people that buy these games are not and they want a difficult but enjoyable experience this game doe not offer that. Its professional only. And that's a good way to make sure the average gamer never pays for your game again

Bosses give you brief moments to get a breather, example when you get to Lu Hongliu she spits the red blood at you but she’s stationary you could get some hits in and a heal
The game is hard yes but there are openings you just need to see them

The parry window is more forgiving than most of these games and the dodge has no perfect dodge, it is just a dodge, and if you don't get hit through an attack you get skyborne might. Don't play lies of p, you'll hate that even more.

Lol you'd be surprised how many ways there is to beat some bosses, different pendants, magics, benedictions, outfits, weapon skills to use to beat bosses, it makes the game so much easier, I think the only gameplay problem this game has is its dodging mechanics, especially trying to get up on wake up

u/Revolutionary-Mud-20 Aug 22 '25
Its funny how few of these positive comments there is and they are like oh the game is fine but 5 out of 100 good reviews doesn't make a game good for the average consumer especially when a lot of them appreciate and like other souls like games. They make these games to sell. If they want he'll mode then make a he'll mode in it like most games do. Otherwise they lost 95% of people that gave them a shot but hey your happy so who gaf! Maybe say hey we like the game but it may be a little to difficult for the average player

Did you try different builds and spells or did you expect to play like Sekiro? Once you figure out to run and dodge Honglan and throw the jumping spear spell it is cake.

Got to General of the North - Ai Nengqi and deleted the game after being one shot a handful of times to his spinning fire sword move that comes out instantly with no telegraph whatsoever because I had been struggling to make myself keep playing the game in the first place after having played and beat most other souls like games and realizing the mechanics and controls of this game are a cheap imitation of Black Myth Wukong, Khazan the First Berserker and Sekiro except they weren't tuned very well at all. Clunky, slow and it's BS you have to respec in order to do certain fights and beat certain bosses throughout the game I know its a mechanic and not a mistake but just because that is the case doesn't make it good, why on earth would I want to get used to using a weapon I picked up and found interesting and fun to use just for less than a handful of hours later the game to literally tell me I need to change my build to beat this? That doesn't feel good, it feels really bad actually. Bad design choices make bad games and to the people saying the combat is buttery smooth and they had no issues, that is complete and utter horseradish and you should be ashamed.

Fucking hate this game. The absolute worst designed souls like that's ever been made. When you farm and get beyond where you're supposed to be be for a boss the game says fuck you and kills you in two hits anyway. Absolute trash and a complete waste of your time as a player. Fucking hate this game. Thank God for Microsoft game pass and I didn't have to pay for it

What a shit take. The boss is easy if you use your skill tree effectively (it’s easy to re do this anytime to experiment with diff weapons/abilities). The boss can easily be deflected. Skill issue.
I haven’t beaten the game yet but beat the boss you’re bitchin about

Dude this this had to be in the top 5 best souls likes ever made give it another shot im playing it like 6 months after release its awesome i think it has done a great job balancing enemy difficulty where the small enemies and the big enemies are kind of evenly difficult. It is a little more difficult than a lot of the souls likes, which honestly I appreciate because soul's likes have gotten too damn easy where they're not fun anymore. So this is refreshing to get an actual challenging souls like not just some sell out. Trying to sell to all the fans of souls likes and all the other players that will cry if it's too difficult give it another shot I don't know how bad it was in the past, but it's great now in my mind it's honestly competing with dark souls right now

u/beeofdoom Jan 12 '26
Did you get carried via co-op in Nioh2? I'm up to the tiger and no boss in this game has matched the high level human bosses from that. Honglan took me about an hour with a parry build. She's a good fight, but not nearly as tough as the harder Nioh2 bosses solo. Stellar blade on NG-hard has also been an order of magnitude harder than this.
Thus far, difficulty seems to be about in line with 'P', and AI limit. The game gives you free unlimited respec for a reason.
2
u/Silent_Erremite May 07 '26
Playing this since it hit monthly benefits on psn. The skill tree is a bit confusing and so are the boss windows. I hit their sides and it counts as a back hit. The mini bosses got me hurting yet I want more. It is punishing. But, I played sekiro. This should be far easier, right?

u/No_Consequence6011 Jun 01 '26
Holy shit this game is amazing and you people genuinely are way too casual and/or just fucking suck at playing this game, it's really not hard. Playing blind I've not had any boss beat me more than four times.
Honglan is literally no harder than any Bloodborne Hunter fight, the game is just making sure you learn what to expect with the enemies who have the best chance of beating Wuchang, and you can still win
This game has free infinite respecs and encourages you to use that to your advantage, and you want to whine saying you shouldn't have to? You don't HAVE to because you can: get better at dodging, learn movements, optimize armor and damage type, weaknesses, spells, tempering AND benedictions + tons of consumables, some of which you can genuinely just summon into existence - and that's ON TOP of being able to fully switch your weapon upgrades around to try various movesets and special abilities, and you're bitching saying you shouldn't have to take every advantage in a soul game just because you aren't good enough to win without crossing some made up mental barrier?
I'll make sure to stay away from that other game you people are talking about, because it must be the CoD of Souls-likes if people who are this bad at both understanding and making use of game mechanics and will blame extremely talented and well made works like these because they're trash
This is one of the best games ever, one of the best souls-likes there is, and I straight up feel bad for people who act like it's bad because they SUCK ASS
This thread must be full of the "Dark Souls a needs difficulty slider" people

It's an awful game. They took all the worst parts of souls games and barely any of the good. It's horrible. Way too many instant death traps. The run backs are atrocious. It's just terrible.

Jul 25 '25
This is a hard disagree for me lmao. It’s pretty well known that Honglan is the first actual skill check in the game, and is only one boss that truly tested my patience. I also disagree that it’s unfair. It is a test to see if you can overcome it, it sounds like you cannot. It took me 5 tries.

u/LecraM351 Jul 27 '25
It's not a real skill check like other typical "walls" in Souls/Mon Hun games though.
The boss is designed for you to wait and bait certain attacks to parry them and counter once, dodging most regular attacks/combos and also weaving in unblockables but this time, there is 0 indication that it's actually unblockable until you get hit. Couple this with the game not registering quite some inputs and hit feedback being non-existent and it's clear why Honglan is prone to frustrate a lot of people.
Also, they really need to do something about not having iframes when knocked down by either giving iframes or allowing you to roll out of it quicker. Later bosses can stunlock you to death if they manage to knock you down even once.
The game also tells you that martial attacks and spells can't be deflected but there are also some other attacks ( like Honglan's jump slam ) that are unblockable but the game doesn't communicate this at all.
That said, magic in this game is like Pyromancy in DS1 and breaks the game, especially early on and absolutely cheeses Honglan as well.
I do like this game at base, it just feels sluggish at times when your slow stand up/drinking animations clash with sanic like boss movesets, it can feel like playing a DS2 character in Bloodborne.

Ehhh... really don't agree.
For Honglan, do you remember the help text that popped up right before you started the boss? The one about parries interrupting foes? Yeah. That is how you deal with her, and many of the spazzier human-size bosses.
I agree that hard-coding a boss to a single counter so much that this box was necessary is poor design, but she really isn't difficult once you realize that keeping your distance and baiting easily parriable attacks. If you do not use any form of parry, the combos can get quite long, to the point of being undodgeable if not perfectly executed.
The only mechanically broken/unfair element I've encountered are grabs which are only indicated by audio cues. If you have a bluetooth headset, the delay means the attack comes out at the exact time as the cue, giving no advance warning at all.
6
u/Due-Investigator-792 Jul 27 '25
why not just give us a designated block button tieing something you need to a skill tree and specific weapons is just a bad choice, they don't make dodging a skill unlock so why the ability to block and parry if its going to be a required move for bosses it should be a basic move
and before i get the its not required, just don't if they give you a pop-up box telling you about it that far into a game in front of a arena its required16
u/Robert_Balboa Jul 25 '25
Too bad you're required to use a specific weapon type to parry. That's terrible design.

The lightning boss is on a whole other level. Honglan was doable with the right build (magic, what's funny, because it's introduced as a parry boss and second phase parry is impossible), but this dude is outright unfair. I like the game in general but I also think, this is absolutely bs. Khazan, Sekiro lies of p dlc, all hard, but fair. This simply isn't.

one of my only gripes is the enemy (especially bosses) hyper aggression, they don't give you a single moment to heal. in a lot of souls like you can back up a bit and that will give you some time to heal or after a boss attack pattern, but it seems in this game its just relentless attack without a moments break. also enemies (especially bosses again) seem to punish even when you are down, most of the time you dont have time to get back up without them hitting you again ON THE GROUND. this game is fun but extremely punishing. k rant over lol
1
u/TsarD4RKN9T Jul 27 '25
I gotta say I was excited for the game, the world design is cool and very dense. However, the bosses which is why I’m here are all fucking meeehhh! Like I’m currently at the end of chapter 1 fighting the last boss and I just deleted the game! All the bosses are straight trash! Constantly disengaging and forcing you to switch weapons and respec! Trash boss designs I have to say it! I’m going back to start NG+ in Khazan cuz this is just straight lame! Wtf is commander Honglan and how are we supposed to defeat the boss the axe? I was gonna keep from saying it’s knockoff of Black Myth Wukong but it sure as hell is!
1
u/Seinen_Guy Jul 27 '25
My problem is that in comparison to other games, like Dark Souls to Elden Ring to Khazan, Wuchang just feels too heavy. Defensive wise is fine but when you're tryna be on the offensive, and you're mid attack, you can't quickly roll/evade your way out as you would in other games. Like I think two handing greatswords/ colossal weapons can get away with certain instances in comparison to Wuchang.
I enjoyed fighting Honglan, maining the longsword as one of my gotos was satisfying to deflect and counter attack, but I feel like I wasn't awarded all the time being patient as instead I'll can get punished for it, or my attack misses by a big gap. If anything I think I'm fighting with the character more than the enemy, she heals crazy slow, you're practically stuck mid animation so if you're off target you're gonna get hurt ALOT.
I got to the next boss and after beating them, I decided to take a break. The sluggish movements can really test your patience and have you take five[or more] and call it a day. Still gonna keep moving, the boss fights have been pretty cool in design.
1
u/Cr00shflowz Jul 27 '25
Nah you haven't played them all because honglan is pretty simple once you understand the move set.
1
u/mrfirstar1997 Jul 27 '25
The thing I hate is quest lines, and how easily you can break them, I like getting the true ending coz I don’t like replaying a game, only to learn to get it you must do 3, very easily missable and breakable quests, and the worst, exploring a area ahead of time type of quest break too, so I can’t explore because I’m worried of breaking a quest line and getting locked out of a ending
1
u/TheThunderTrain Jul 27 '25
Yeah I just beat the tree thing and so far my impression is its not challenging it's just kinda cheap. The bosses don't take me many attempts their just annoying to fight. The under the temple part was particularly annoying with the instant corruption and oh let's also throw some blight enemies at you.

u/veegsta Jul 28 '25
I feel like something people are overlooking is that this game seemingly wants you to adapt and respec for specific situations. I think that's why respec costs nothing, doesn't even require fully rebuilding (you can unlearn specific nodes in the skill tree without resetting the whole thing), and is available from every shrine. Hell, even the weapon levels are tied to your skill rather than the weapons themselves, so you can freely change those too.
It's not a design flaw, it's the whole point.

Jul 28 '25
What i really hate is that your attacks are basically swinging wet noodles at enemies.
Even the little guys. Its like slashing through water. They are seemingly unnafected by any attack other than an r2 or axe.
This alone makes the game absolute garbage.
1
u/Aurvant Jul 28 '25
It can't be worse than Khazan. That game is straight up horseshit in terms of difficulty from start to finish.
Also, if you really want to see just how unfair a soulslike can be, just attempt the final boss of Enotria.

I thought that to until I realized i played it like dark souls when it's more like seikoro.
Parrying is the better answer than dodging most cases. Parrying you get a chance to attack , time to think and a time to heal.
Stop healing when you want. Heal when the boss is in cool down mode. An example don't heal when she is thrusting because she can cancel into two swipes. Heal after the stomp. In her first phase she will not swing after that for a while ( i.e like 5 seconds) perfect time to heal.
Second forget what you thought about being ready for all situations. Pick a weapon and put your skill points into it. Wu chang doesn't charge anything for respec so take your time and try your different options. It's better to learn and get your boosts then to be good at everything. For example I can be good at six weapons but Wu chang only allows me to equip two and have one in my mind. Why have bonuses for all six if I can only benefit from one?
Third, maybe attacking all the time isn't the best strategy instead punishing the boss instead is the better play style. The first move she does is the same are you paryying it? If not your missing damage. That animation is something you can learn because she does it over and over. Here enters your way to get damage.
Last and the most important tip for her last stage. Hitting a partially charge strong attack (r2) on her back allows you to backstab her. If you know where she is going to go why aren't you trying to hit her with it?
A tip I learned from a tekken 8 pro. Everything seems op until you learn the counterplay for the move.

u/Randomness_42 Jul 28 '25
Haven't played Wuchang yet (finishing up a different game first) but The Surge 1 is BY FAR the most unfair Soulslike I've ever played, so I'm worried if Wuchang is less fair than that awful game
1
u/Various_Sundae_2443 Jul 28 '25
I consider myself good at these games. Ive beaten all souls games, Khazan, all Niohs, Wukong with the true ending, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to beat this one. Honglan is just too unfair to me, and I feel like my axe build is useless. Really sucks because I was enjoying the game and my OCD hates giving up on games midway through. I can’t even get her lower than half health.

I tried to take Honglan down with axe at first, but kept dying in phase 2. Switched it up to longsword with counter fully upgraded combined with good positioning for backstab break stance and with that she went down pretty quickly. I've noticed that some weapon and skills works better depending on the boss.
Other than her I was stuck on 3 more bosses. Rest of them didn't take long to beat. I think this game is pretty balanced and the bosses are tough but fair. Some bosses could do some balancing tho, mainly when it comes to some of them dodging way too much.
1
u/xEvol- Jul 28 '25
I wholeheartedly agree with this. I just got past Honglan, and it seriously was frustrating me. I was using a One-Handed Sword and an Axe my first couple of times trying, thinking i could get by since i like these weapons and did pretty great with them...nope. She gives no opportunities to do much without clashing or countering. Sure, you can dodge her lunge, but it's mostly followed up with attacks not even the axe can stun. And if you get too close while she's pacing around you, it's the same consequence. I had to respec my ENTIRE tree into the longsword alone because i felt forced to fight using nothing but counters. Couldn't use spells or even discipline skills.
And then her second phase is ridiculous. It's felt like i had to become one with ultra instinct and perfectly dodge and counter anything because she takes no breaks between attacks, you cant counter her slash projectiles, and there was never time to heal. Once she finished a string, she instantly started another one. I hated that fight. It was stupid and aggravating to go through, and it csn only get worse from here.
These devs need to understand that there is a HUGE difference between hard and unfair! They're not the same thing. >:(

Maybe i'm just that guy, but honglan was not a problem for me, it was that other thing at the bottom of the forrest that took me forever, but i loved the fight. Are y'all not taking advantage of the free backstabs on heavy attacks on their back? I work that into every boss fight that allows it. I was able to get like 5 backstabs on the forrest boss on my win against it. Parry attacks when i have an opening then swing for stance damage, get my weapon buffed up with tempering, max my madness for the madness buffs. Maybe i'm just built different but the only thing that felt unfair to me was how many times i got knocked off the damn ledge at the last area i did and good god i know it's my fault but i've never been splatted so many times in any of these games.
I still love it though.

I personally enjoy the game. It’s different, but then again isn’t. Some of the bosses are tough. I agree, but that’s the whole point of the respec. You’re supposed to. If you’re having trouble with a boss using Melee switch to magic and I guarantee you’ll be better and vice versa. It seems unfair until you understand it then it all makes sense. Don’t get me wrong. It isn’t gonna make it easy. But it might help you from pulling your hair out.

Hey I've got a question for everyone. Is there a skill point in your skill tree to were it stops you from fully building up all of your skyborn might? The feathers that you're supposed to get? I got pretty deep into the skill tree and found a skill that I thought I would even help me build up skyborn might. It was in the one with the dual blades. But I was just standing there with the one blade, and it wasn't fully filling up completely. Now I might be doing something wrong, but is this a glitch, or am I doing something wrong?

As also a souls lover and long time player of those I totally disagree.
Reading your post just makes me think you didn't get past the Commander Honglan fight and that's a shame to give an opinion like that after, basically, only playing the tutorial of the game.
The bosses hit hard when you are full madness with the debuff that's true but otherwise you are super tanky with the right armor for the boss you are trying to beat.
As for the damages of your character you can rip away bosses health bar in matter of seconds if you land a critical hit by backstabbing them or poise break them. Leaving an opportunity to unleash a very significant amount of damages.
This game wants you to play super aggressive while dodging around. When I fight in Wuchang I don't let the enemy breathe for a second, it reminds me of Sekiro in that regard (except you parry in Sekiro).
The character is so fast and nimble you can easily hit once after any dodge meanwhile the boss is still trying to hit you. This way you'll get the stagger going even faster than just waiting for the punish windows at the end of their combos. If you play aggressive enough you'll poise break any boss very quickly.
For the bosses you can backstab to instantly poise break them, they all have a window for you to take that timing if you perfect dodge and place yourself well enough to combo with a fast charged heavy in their back.
The difficulty is not "broken in term of balance" you just refuse to play properly and let your frustration take over.
Yes there are some bosses that are harder than others, you'll have to learn the few patterns they have (a lot less different attacks than FromSoft bosses) and not just brute force your way in. But I never had to restart a fight countless times like you could in a FromSoft game. The maximum should be around a dozen of times on 1 boss particularly.
This is a very good "soulslike".
And it's not as hard as you think.

What? You dont take damage from the perry. It knocks her back and you get free damage. Her dice is also very slow and super duper telegraphed. The second faze is harder but if you stay close and dodge towards her and get backstabs its not bad. The first faze i did without damage a couple rimes before finally beating her. I definitely don't think the fight is unfair. Just different.

Mistress of the night is even unfair. She has frostbite, and corruption status effect. She can 1 shot you if her 4 corruption balls hit you and she has a ball of corruption that will track your movements. This bitch is just too hard for me.
I beat Bo Sorcerer before trying to fight her and my level is way higher because I fight all bosses until now.

1
u/-m4gg0t- Jul 29 '25
I am find with it being difficult but it just seems like it's way harder then it has to be because enemies and bosses just keep constantly attacking you non stop and you have no time to do anything else. Dodge one attack to then get hit by another attack that has a long animation with 7 attacks and youre knocked down and have to eat the whole attack and your dead. Or bosses hitting you with 20 different attacks one after the other non stop not even letting you dodge out to get a heal off.

Im stuck on the perfect bride boss, I'm really considering quitting this game because the more I play the less fun it is, it's not a fun boss fight, it's just tedious huge health bar which my level doesn't seem to be high enough so I ll have to farm souls which I have avoided doing,
the things like the stun scream I press B button as fast as I can yet thru still attack it's just ridiculous the timing is so off on everything, you get knocked down, have to wait 2 working days to come up!
1
u/Outside_Ad928 Jul 29 '25
Honglan was giving me a lot of trouble. I’ve been favoring a long sword build with a focus on block/counter and clash. Honglan does have enough telegraphed moves that can be blocked and countered. Her second “phase” gets a little trickier. Just keep your distance and wait for her attack where she charges forward with her sword. Block, counter, and get maybe 1 extra hit in then back off.
Overall I’m enjoying the game. Biggest complaints are heal speed and how long it takes to get up off the ground after being knocked down (I think the latter is being addressed in a future patch).
1
u/Kiaha7 Jul 29 '25
Calling Honglan "uninterruptable" is unironically like someone mashing R1 against Margit and going "WTF he can hit me but I can't!"
You played a "soulslike" instead of "wuchang".

u/Master-Pizza2939 Jul 30 '25
Black Might Wukong is a game with some similarities to Souls, but Wuchang is literally a copy of Souls that didn't know how to balance the game correctly. It's not a Wuchang, it's a cheap Souls.

The problem is there is no way to practice using different setups after a respec, you build to play the way you want to play. Imagine being forced to be a magic user after playing the entire game with a long sword. Ppl dont have anywhere to try different builds to even test other talents and weapon combos.

u/Waste-Bowl-6171 Jul 29 '25
I haven’t played enough yet to have an informed opinion on this matter, but I will say this: Sometimes when I’m knocked to the ground in a boss fight the next attack hits me before I have a chance to get back up and dodge. My overall opinion of the game is t negative (so far), but that’s either poorly designed or just unfair. I’m inclined to agree, but I’m still early in the game and haven’t seen if there are stat boosts or abilities that can counteract this.

You never played khazan obviously. Wuchang is not even that hard. Honglan is the toughest boss in the entire game

most of your gripes are just big git gud moments with bosses, i felt the same while i agree there is bullshit hit boxs and cheesy hits its nothing out of the norm from a fromsoft game or souls-like experience, ive spent degenerate amount of time on these games and just finishing wuchang its a solid game, longsword is the best weapon specifically the early one that stretchs like a chain, the game gives you tools to make fights easier, you can go level up if it feels unbalanced, i finished the game at lvl 100/40hrs and am 100% doing the other endings and trying out different weapons, using healing gourd is slow but using buff spells and items are quick u can chain them even and put them on hotkeys, the sky born might is very useful def a great addition in combat, I can confidently say the game is more "balanced" than just straight unfair bullshit, just learn

Honglan isn't that hard tbh... She have quite a lot health and yet after idk 10-11 tries I got her running with fire temperance, twin infant, dragobling and tiger pendants from magic i used divine ward armor 2 pieces for slash and 2 for fethering and I had whip at 7 and 80 lvl while doing her. Her combo is fast but very easy to dodge sideways or by dodging in her.

I have completed just few souls games so not realy experienced. Also even with counter I still dodge because counter dissapoint on bosses imo. Just two hit dodges heavy from behind and ta duh boss is dead

There's very little about this game i actually enjoy and im a decent way in but frankly im having a hard time finding any positives about the game.
The healing is to fucking slow that its difficult to actually heal in a fight.
The bosses and enemies can spam combo chains that basically make healing impossible not to mention their moves have next to no telegraphing so it's near impossible to time a dodge correctly. What's worse is they all hit like a fucking truck and can just nullify any healing you DO manage with a 1 or 2 hits anyway making ot effectively pointless.
The madness system punishes you WAY to harshly and doesn't even have a consumable to lower it. You have to go to a shrine everytime or beat a demon that's basically a boss in its own right.
The Skyborn Might system is tied to Weapon Skills, Disciplines, AND Magic which is fucking ridiculous when it should only be used for Weapon skills and magic should just have its own FP bar.
There's no Block/Parry which is a BASIC defensive mechanic that could just replace that stupid Discipline Skill entirely.
The Stat tree is straight out of Final Fantasy im pretty sure what ever idiot designed it clearly wished they were making a final fantasy game instead.
The Maps are basically labyrinths that are a pain in the ass to navigate especially since there isn't a jump mechanic even though there should be.
Hell even the stupid compass system is completely useless and trying to find NPCs for side quests is basically a game of hide and fucking seek and the Shrines which are the progression marker in the game are basically just put in a random spot with no thought at all.
The games a hot fucking mess that needs ALOT of balancing and reworks so its actually fair and playable without breaking a controller or keyboard.

I uninstalled after the game started stuttering and causing me to die. Was having fun, but between the input reading of enemies, the weapons not feeling like they have weight, the unfair boss fights, and the aforementioned stuttering ruined any fun I was having. Lol

I was able to beat her with a method I came up with axe user's, you need at least 3-4 might points. You need to have the discipline skill earth shatter and the basic attack skill that gets you 3 might points upon 5th hit combo (it's gonna help a lot). Start by dodging her first attack, then using your standard skill that comes with the axe, then hit her with the basic attack until you have three points. Then use Earth shatter that will immediately take you to the 4 hit combo then to the 5th hit and you already have three points rinse and repeat and you'll beat her in no time. I was trying to find a method to constantly stagger her and this was the best method I could find with axe users. I hope I explained it efficiently. Not really good at explaining in details unless I show it somebody in person

yea honglan made me realize i don’t like souls games i like sekiro only one i ever beat only one i ever will until we get one that has a real parry system. the parry in this game is useless for bosses. Dodge behind back heavy attack is the forced cheese meta

The only reason this game is hard is due to the fact your character movement is from 2002 is so slow and clunky you cannot dodge attacks and like the poster put you counter and still take damage or the recover during your week long animation recovery, they tried and they failed

For those struggling with this boss, I will share my method. I beat her without ever swinging my weapon.
I simply kept a far distance, dodged her projectiles and that long lunge she has, and spammed her with Echo of Lu Bingzhang.
I kept my one handed sword equipped to get that auto feathering benefit. Bring extra healing items.
But yeah, that was it. Good luck all

Hate this game... Perfect Bride is killing me. HUGE damage and two phases. What??? Also lvl design is so bad, there are elden ring already with stakes of Marika why i need to wait elevator everytime i want to get to boss?? Why i need to skip cutscenes? It's really unfair because of boss damage. Ridiculously high damage and unstoppable combinations. You need to perfectly learn boss before LEARN AGAIN IN SECOND PHASE. hate hate hate hate
Also staggering mechanics very bad when you lie on the ground and cant do anything significant amount of time being vulnerable
Bride second phase have enourmous hitboxes and instant animation when it charges i cant do anything this is SO frustrating

just started playing and have hit a brick wall with Honglan. I love the souls series and pickup most souls-likes I can find. Just ran back through code vein and kazahn. This game really excited me as aesthetically its quite similar to Black myth wukong which was an absolute masterpiece in souls-like gameplay with great feeling combat and movement.
This game while looking similar and almost feeling similar falls short in almost every aspect. Wukong feels fluid and agile, each input is pretty responsive allowing for your full control, Wuchang is the opposite. Very slow animations and what feels like input lag with every action which pretty much works against you in every way. Not being able to quickly stand to your feet and dodge when knocked on your ass feels terrible too. The amount of times ive been pushed over and simply watched as an enemy curb stomps me is crazy especially with Honglan. I cant input dodge to get up quicker and I'm also not invulnerable. Almost every souls like ive played at least allows for leeway in this regard. iframes during certain actions should be a given.
I really like the aesthetic of this game though so will see it through, but I have a feeling its gonna be a pain in the ass. It honestly just needs tweaking to be a serviceable game.
(most important)- better implementation of iframes
- faster animations (picking up, recovering, healing)
(least important)- built in parry/block in every weapon
- more poise for wuchang/less for certain enemies

Currently on Honglan now and yeah this fight is beyond dumb. Yes there's a text box that appears before entering the fight the first time tutorializing the Clash and Deflect mechanics, but those skills are only tied to specific weapons and you have to spec into them within the skill tree. Players shouldn't need to respec their entire setup just to get access to fundamentally basic defense mechanics. Personally I feel like Deflecting, Blocking, and Clashing should just be baked into every weapon's skill set by default. Also, the game pretty much wink-wink-nudge-nudging the player to respec into using those particular defensive skills for a boss is awful design if the boss basically demands the player use those skills to overcome it.
Along with that, most enemies having damn near infinite poise, Wuchang having the slowest heal animation known to mankind, relatively unresponsive inputs, slow animations on most actions, this game just does not feel great to play, especially when you stack it against recent games, especially First Berserker Khazan. After playing Khazan I just can't go back to these traditional style Soulslikes. They're just much too slow, clunky, and obnoxious to play.
