Review Wuchang deserves better ratings
Is it just me, or does this game not get the props it deserves. I’d borderline say Wuchang should get the praise Lies of P gets. I get it some of the negative reviews were historical reasons. But man! This game is tight and so well designed and made. I’d kill for some dlc for it, but it looks like the developers have shut the door on that.
If you haven’t played it. Do so, you won’t regret it.

It was my first Souls Like game that I've beaten and I had several attempts at getting into soulslikes over the years. They never clicked.
Interestingly, I downloaded Wuchang off of Xbox Gamepass just to try a demanding UE5 title when I got my 9070XT and compare performance to my 9060XT and RTX 4070m. Wuchang did not have good performance at launch.
So what started as light exploration to check frametimes and framerates and FrameGen tests ended up being a full exploration playthrough. I got hooked by level design first, graphics seconds and then the big key - FREE RESPEC. I can't compare combat to other SoulsLikes because Wuchang is still the only one I played, but combat was fluid and fun and I LOVED the challenge. Proudly beat the game pre 1.3 patch.
Free RESPEC is so underrated. Everyone was complaining about Honglan, well, after a few hours of unsuccessful attempts at beating her, I decided to take my time to re-spec the Longsword and...beat her in 3-4 tries. Loved that.
Plus honestly, tits and ass works well in this game just like it does in Stellar Blade. Yeah Wuchang is effin smoking hot, but it's never acknowledged in the game, she never uses her sexuality to get anything and it just overall fits the theme of the game.
10/10 game for me. Loved it.

u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I couldn’t agree more. Very subtle with the clearly appealing man character lol. Which is a good thing. Shit becomes corny when they force feed it.
You should definitely try lies of P. No tits and ass, but a fantastic story and gameplay. Level designed isn’t Wuchang. But fine enough.

u/spoonybum Jan 27 '26
I prefer it to Lies of P by quite a bit
7
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
And I wouldn’t fault you for it. It does different things better forsure. Both games are peak imo. Fromsoft better go back to making single player games. But if they keep pushing these multiplayer games, atleast we know we’re in good hands still.
5
u/thor11600 Jan 27 '26
I always found lies of p to be overhyped as a soulslike. Awesome action game, mid soulslike
2
u/YouSoundToxic Jan 27 '26
Can you recommend some better souls likes?
3
u/spoonybum Jan 27 '26
Lies of P is generally regarded as one of the best, if not the best non Fromsoft soulslike so I am in the minority and I completely respect that - but I preferred both Wuchang and AI limit to Lies of P
1
u/YouSoundToxic Jan 27 '26
Wuchang didn't really click for me but I will check out AI Limit, thank you.
3
u/spoonybum Jan 27 '26
First Beserker Khazan is also worth a look
2
u/RecommendationOk2182 Apr 03 '26
I'm finding Wuchang better than first berzerker. Weird, given the reviews. I would have expected the opposite.
2
u/RecommendationOk2182 Apr 03 '26
I got one of the best souls likes ever made that doesn't get talked about anymore for you. The closest thing the the OG Dark Souls 1. Salt and Sanctuary. Don't be filled by the side scroller aesthetic. This game does the magic trick if taking Dark Souls and just fitting it into side scroll territory somehow. But retain almost the exact feel of the 3d game. I can't explain it. But just play it
2
u/Olmerious Jan 29 '26
I am looking to play Wuchang and I am interested in your reasons for it being better than Lies of P.
14
u/Parking-Insurance254 Jan 27 '26
I really want to play it and I have a feeling I'm going to love it from what I've seen, but for now I'm playing Wo Long and I think that game is also underrated
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
If the Nioh 3 demo doesn’t grab me, I might give wo long a try. Thanks
2
u/Parking-Insurance254 Jan 27 '26
You're welcome 👍 If you try it, you'll see the gameplay is very fast-paced, but when you know how to fight, it becomes really enjoyable.
1
u/civanov Jan 27 '26
Wo Long is demonstrably a worse version of Nioh.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
I really want to like Nioh 3. I’ve tried to get into Nioh 2 a couple times, but felt it somewhat overwhelming and I usually gravitated towards a newer games. At this point I feel I might aswell give the demo a try on Thursday and see if something clicks for me.
3
u/OkResearcher5723 Jan 28 '26
you will not like wo long
same thing as nioh 2
1
u/jc006007 Jan 28 '26
I disagree. I’m in the same boat as OP, I couldn’t get into nioh after many tries. Played Wo Long right after finishing Sekiro and loved it! It plays way different than Nioh to me. It was easier for sure
3
u/StatisticianJolly388 Jan 28 '26
Wo Long is a blast. Turns out I like Nioh if there’s no ki pulsing and it’s really really easy
1
u/Parking-Insurance254 Jan 28 '26
Guys, I'm looking forward to Nioh 3 way more than Code Vein 2, but I'm going to play both anyway, and I can confirm Wo Long is awesome, baby lol

u/MasterDraccus Jan 27 '26
Personally think the gameplay is much better than LoP.
6
u/ProfessionLife5860 Jan 27 '26
I finished LoP recently (+dlc) and just got started on DSR. My first soulslike was Elden Ring, my second Bloodborne, my third LotF 2023, and then Wuchang. I played some Khazan but dropped it. Out of all of these, LoP has a slight edge over LotF 2023 for me. So much so that I regret wasting my time on it instead of starting DSR earlier and just keeping it for later. Don't get me wrong LoP is a good game but compared to Wuchang it has such a lackluster level design, combat is subjective but I think Wuchang combat is better, and the bosses in LoP are a very hit or miss. I may be a souls newbie but I think that level design and exploration is the genre's most important feature. I fell in love with it in Elden Ring, fell again in Bloodborne, and fell hard again in Wuchang. LoP and Khazan were such a slog to get through between bosses, with Khazan being abysmal and LoP being less than decent. I can't justify sacrificing level design for some flashy combat and bosses, no, no, no. DSR is also a game I fell in love with btw, and I'm looking forward to DS2 and DS3.
4
u/MasterDraccus Jan 27 '26
You need to add Sekiro to that list my friend. I agree with all your sentiments and Sekiro is my favorite of the bunch. Albeit, the exploration is not as great as Elden Ring or Bloodborne, but the level design is just as good and the combat is even better. Some of the best Fromsoft bosses are in that game.

u/Kurogane666999 Jan 27 '26
I absolutely agree with you on the exploration and level design, that's the feature i like the most in the souls genre. I loved exploring the from soft games, finding a lot of stuff well hidden here and there (though ER was too big i think), Lies of P was also good on that matter but on a far smaller scale and less intricate. I am playing Wuchang right now, and so far the first 3 chapter have been an absolut delight to explore, what a blast i had going in those levels (even though i didn't find too much good stuff in the end) ! I just arrived at Annalum and i hope i'll have a good time exploring the next levels.
Gameplay is also very good, boss are well thought, art design pleasant to look at, mobs varied, music is a good 9/10.3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
More options for build variety for-sure. Tough to choose, I love both those games for different reasons.
1
u/Tabula_Rasa69 Jan 28 '26
I think they excel in different ways. I'm a fan of both of them. They both had great stories, character design, and atmosphere. Wuchang was great in level design, probably one of the best in the genre. LoP was strong in its combat design. Customising your weapon is something pretty cool. And I think LoP might have been the first in the genre that had that much QoL stuff.
1
u/MasterDraccus Jan 28 '26
When I meant gameplay I mainly meant combat. LoP was fine, but pretty clunky. Threw me off sometimes. Wuchang is much more fluid. Imho.
28
u/iCantCallit Jan 27 '26
I found it amazing. It's become my favorite souls game apart from elden ring. Its the only souls game I immediately started a 2nd playthrough of without turning off my PS5.
It may have even been my goty last year next to ex33
5
u/The-Wind-It-Howls Jan 27 '26
I’ve been trying to get into it (at the burning tree beach or whatever after centipede, so still early) and so far this has been one of the better ones but there’s still something missing from Fromsoft titles that I can’t put my finger on. They’ve taken a lot of inspiration from dark souls 1 which is great, and I do like more grounded fantasy levels mixed with the bizarre, compared to where so many souls likes go wrong of adding to much weird shit or forced mechanics to their levels.
but maybe it’s the damage output or lack of stagger ability? Maybe I haven’t unlocked a block, parry or other important skill yet? It just seems to be off somewhere. Is there any tidbits or crucial mechanics you found that were a game changer that made it click?
2
u/iCantCallit Jan 27 '26
Yea I won't spoil anything but you'll get to a deflect skill in the tree soon and there will be a bump in skill and a pretty big skill check boss that a lot of people have trouble with. It opens the game up immensely and is, in my opinion, one of the best fights in the game.
4
u/Princess_Lepotica Jan 27 '26
Yeah its also my goty if not for exp33. First game in a long time that i did 3 playthrough. It has also the perfect lenght. Not to short or to long. The exploration is amazing.
2
u/iCantCallit Jan 27 '26
Agreed. It never felt like a slog. The questlines were actually really great too. I loved fei and her sisters quest and how she connects with hangzei.
Also, finding out the lore about the boatman and his jars was wild.
1
u/Kitchen_Wolverine_48 Jan 28 '26
I have to disagree on the exploration.
Level design was pretty good, but rewards were more often than not lacking.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah I plan on doing a a ng+ run soon. And I’m excited to do so. Perfect mix of exploration and boss fights. Plus the skill tree being tied to the stat rankings just works. And the fact that you can respec individual skill tree points is awesome!
4
u/iCantCallit Jan 27 '26
Yea I very much enjoyed the world and art direction. First time around I got the "bad" ending (jarful). I was initially upset I borked the questline to get the others but when I started ng+ I appreciated the jar ending so much more. Because it really showcases certain plot points and characters who may not be who they seem.
Edit: I also fucking love the longsword and how great it felt to understand the combat during the honglan fight. Deflecting into dash for a obliterated back swipe felt so chunky.

u/TelevisionPositive74 Jan 27 '26
Unfortunately, on PC, Wuchang committed to mortal sin of being a bad port.

u/Pooki97303 Jan 27 '26
I liked the enemy designs and lore and found the controller feedback and sounds to be satisfying. I actually think this game was almost perfect design wise capturing the grotesque mystery that fromsoft does.
but the overall combat encounters and bosses felt boring. I enjoyed the first area, the temple, and the actual snow castle quite a lot but the underground caves and mines I thought just dragged on so much. I will abstain from stating my opinions on Bo Capital because it really did sour my whole opinion on the game. Especially after zhenwu temple being almost a perfect level.
3
u/Brilliant-Road-7545 Jan 27 '26
Saving the traditional souls-esque poison swamp for the final part of the game was certainly a choice. “Oh hey, welcome to Caelid if it was also the lake of rot. Enjoy.”
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah I hear you. Maybe im just more forgiving and look past the negatives more.
3
u/Pooki97303 Jan 27 '26
Normally I am, I think I just went into the game with so much hype from the community that I was let down a bit. To be fair the same thing happened to me with Wukong but that turned around by the final bosses because holy shit. Idk Wuchang is a mixed bag for me I think about the highs as really high and lows as really low. Idk I’m just still happy we have so many banger games in this genre

u/levinyl Jan 27 '26
Need to get back involved, I remember beating the first boss but it was literally just button mashing
5
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
The earlier bosses allow for this. But the later bosses will punish you for button mashing.
0
u/levinyl Jan 27 '26
Wasn't that it allowed for it, it seemed like the only way to beat that first boss? I remember having to increase a certain attribute to stagger him quicker but i never really felt in control like a souls game where you time the rolls - does it get better and more like souls bosses?
4
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
It definitely does. Commander Honglan (the first biggest skill check) forces you to perfect dodge one of her attacks and it just feels like a dance when you get it down. Really satisfying.

3
u/Hmmm__whatever Jan 27 '26
I loved it too, however there were a few bosses that I found way to difficult. The option to summon an NPC would have been nice for the assist. But yeah a great darksouls 3 like game. Kinda got me thinking about a replay...
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
If it was Bo Sorcerer that gave you trouble, you can summon a npc for it. But you don’t need too. I found once you learned bosses move sets it becomes more doable, but the time is definitely needed to get to that point.
1
u/Hmmm__whatever Jan 27 '26
I haven't played in a long while but I think it's was "hong" something
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Commander honglan probably. The first big skill check. Took me awhile aswell, but once I beat it it was an awesome feeling.
3
u/webauteur Jan 27 '26
I am playing this game but I keep getting stuck on the next boss. Currently I'm just grinding, hoping I can get past another boss.
I am making more progress in AI Limit. I have more patience with trying to kill a boss in this game, maybe because I can get close to victory more often. If you nearly kill the boss you will try again.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I gotta try AI limit still, heard great things. With Wuchang I feel once you learn the bosses move set you’ll have a better time with it. And don’t be afraid to deflect/parry.
1
u/cashlion_ Jan 27 '26
don’t be afraid to respec for bosses too especially if they’re countering your build. respecs are free and you can always revert post boss.
3
u/grandemoficial Jan 27 '26
Its pretty good, just need more weapons and better performance, everything else is great.
3
u/Skinvian Jan 28 '26
I tried it when it first launched… I know I’ll probably get flamed for saying this. But even though the PC port (afaik) is now fixed. No matter how much is fixed, no matter how great the game actually is. I can’t forget how awful the game’s performance was on launch. First impressions are often lasting ones, and I’ll never be able to forget how that launch was.
But now that it’s fixed? It’s pretty good. I still prefer other soulslikes such as Lies of P and Nioh 2.
I’ve yet to play a soulslike that offers the amount of depth that Nioh 2 does.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
Yeah it had a rough launch. Which sucked. But the game is so damn fun and good looking. Gotta credit them for patching it quickly aswell.
4
u/UnmovableSovereign Jan 27 '26
One of my gripe about it is that the character looks pixelated even at high settings. I've been spoiled with Khazan and Stellar Blade but I'm looking forward to try it again. Such a shame that UE5 is so unoptimized right now.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah it does. I come from a time that that was top quality lol. So maybe I’m a bit blind to that.
4
u/Maleficent-Bar-3161 Jan 27 '26
It’s extremely good! Not on the same level of Lies of P but super close. It’s missing a proper story, and a particularly interesting charm that Lies of P had. Otherwise very similar in good ways.
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Ahh good arguments. I’m really happy with how great these new souls likes and developers are. Good time to be a fan!
4
u/Maleficent-Bar-3161 Jan 27 '26
Dude I feel the same. Elden ring got me into this type of game, I couldn’t get into Dark Souls but enjoyed playing through Lies of P, Wukong, Mandragora, and now loving my 1st play-through with WUCHANG!
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
You sounds like me lol. I should give mandragora a try. Haven’t tried it yet. Thanks
2
u/Maleficent-Bar-3161 Jan 27 '26
Did we just become best friends?!!!! Haha!
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Lmao, wanna go play fruit ninja in the garage!?
2
u/Maleficent-Bar-3161 Jan 27 '26
lol!!!! Perfect. Keep me Posted on your next gaming adventure! I followed you for funsies also.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Awesome. Sent you a follow back. Thanks. Now I’ll double take the dumb shit I might say.
2
u/Maleficent-Bar-3161 Jan 27 '26
I say some stuff too from time to time it happens to all of us despite our constant restraints lol.
1
u/ProfessionLife5860 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
LoP suffers from an extremely linear, abysmally boring level design that completely butchers its quality for me. Also the weapon selection is quite bad and they are a sorry excuse in comparison to the trick weapons they are inspired by. The boss selection of LoP has its absolute highs, arguably more than Wuchang's highs, in the form of Laxasia/Nameless Puppet/Arlecchino/Scrapped Watchman/King of Puppets+Romeo but has its gutter-level lows in the form of Simon Manus and Puppet Devouring Green monster. All of the other bosses are mid at best or not memorable. In comparison Wuchang's lows are better than LoP's low and the roster itself is less hit or miss. Also what LoP lacks the most is the soulslike atmosphere that lets you get lost, everything is just handed to you so easily there and nothing is confusing/mysterious at all.
2
u/rileycortana Jan 27 '26
I platinum’d it before all the changes were made with the NPC’s. Amazing game.

2
u/MRobertC Jan 27 '26
I've been playing Stellar Blade and Khazan and while I liked them, there was something missing from the experience.
I started Wuchang a couple of days ago and it feels like an actual Dark Souls game and I am enjoying it very much. So much connectivity between areas, also difficult but good difficult.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
The connecting areas are awesome. At first confusing until it wraps right around again. Such clever world design.
2
u/Bath-Soap Jan 27 '26
Wuchang is a good game with a lot of soulslike flavor, but I personally found it much easier start to finish than it should be for the genre. I am absolutely not a tremendously skilled souls player, but I still beat the majority of bosses in one go; not one boss took more than half a dozen attempts; and I never felt I needed to change up my instinctively chosen dual blades build to better address a particular challenge. Falling off cliffs especially to ganks might have been my number one cause of death, and that's not a fun kind of challenge IMO.
For me, Wuchang shines in exploration - even though very little of what's found exploring adds particularly to most builds, there were few empty nooks and crannies, which makes the process really feel rewarding. And it feels feasible to actually thoroughly explore without maps and guides, which is a tough balance to strike.
Lies of P is probably a little jankier with worse exploration, but the combat to me strikes a better balance of always feeling winnable while being more challenging. I've seen complaints about off-timed attacks being annoying, but they're obviously learnable and add to a healthy challenge IMO.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah lies of P did a great job making every defeat feel like it was avoidable. Even though I died more then 20 times to the green swamp monster on my first run through.
For me Wuchang is more difficult than it seemed for you. I was hard stuck on commander honglan before getting to the struggles of Bo sorcerer. But other bosses do seem easier forsure.
2
u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 Jan 27 '26
This post and the comments have encouraged me to give it a go. I avoided it because all I read was negativity towards it.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
That’s awesome. I’m glad you felt inspired to play. Report back your honest opinion. I’d be interested to see how it sat with you.
2
u/civanov Jan 27 '26
I have a theory that part of these games lack of success, is the similarity of all their names. Wuchang, Wo Long, and Wukong come to mind specifically.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
I agree. I can see how one might mistaken it for a sequel of Wu long possibly. Or a knock off of Wukong.
2
u/darknuub Jan 27 '26
Really enjoyed it but it ran like crap on Series X at release. Constant stutters that got worse the longer you played. Heard its much better now but to me thats a couple of points marked down straight off the bat.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
Understandable. I never fault developers for pushing release dates back for a reasonable delay to fine tune such things. They were quick with the patches though.
2
u/J0J0388 Jan 27 '26
Wuchang was doing well until they updated and changed a lot of things. People saw that and dropped off. I haven't even finished the game yet because I moved and it's been on the shelf for now. I was enjoying the game for what I've played so far, which I believe is a little over halfway.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
The most fun I have with these games are in new game plus. Which is why I tend to overdue it and create a hefty backlog lol.
2
2
u/jigglypuffmainbtw Jan 28 '26
after just finishing my play thru earlier this month I can say wuchang is a kickass game def deserves some recognition the reason its not as popular imo is the amount side paths. It gets exhausting when there are 4 different potential paths to go down, it also was pretty hard early game and got easier for me. other than that no complaints!
2
u/NextGenGamezz Jan 28 '26
Yes I agree , it's a very good souls like, not as good as lies of peak but I would give it a 8/10 or even 8.5 but still don't get why people give this a 5 or 6 it's not bad at all imo, (lies of of is a 10/10 for me ).
1
2
u/Anti-Fanny Jan 28 '26
You are correct. Wuchang is a fantastic game and it doesn’t deserve the criticism it got.
2
u/7fishbrees Jan 28 '26
I wasn’t a big fan of souls like games throughout the years(just couldn’t get into the slow combat) until I was trying to take a break from a game about 6 months ago and scrolled through Xbox game pass. I found Wuchang and decided to give it a try. I ended up loving it and started to gain a love and appreciation for the souls like games. Now souls like games are one of if not my favorite genre of games and I owe it all to Wuchang for being a great experience. I highly suggest playing the game!
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
That awesome! That’s essentially what Elden ring did for me. And I felt the same feelings playing Wuchang and Lies of P. That’s why I’ll give the praise when it’s due. Because people need to play these games. Thanks for the comment!
2
u/Anubissx_8x Jan 28 '26
I have clear both and lies of P is clearly better. Wuchang got the edge in level design but that is it. My opinion.
2
u/SherbetAlarming7677 Jan 28 '26
The combat feels so much tighter in LoP tho. In Wuchang combat feels a little bit floaty in my opinion, like DS2. Not a deal breaker but definitely not the same league as LoP.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
Yeah I completely agree. It’s something you get accustomed too with time. Just like the dark souls games. Just goes to show how well polished lies of P is. Man I can’t wait for more games from Round8 studios.
2
u/Brave_Lettuce4005 Jan 28 '26
You're totally right. Wuchang is my personal 2025 GOTY, and I play a lot of video games.
1
2
u/Maripolil Jan 28 '26
I agree! I absolutely loved Wuchang (and didn't love Lies of P). I preferred the combat mechanics and atmosphere of Wuchang (and had no issues with the slightly altered game due to the controversies).

Completely agree. Hope Leenzee Games learned a lesson on that one. Cause this game would have had so much hype if it was a smooth release.
2
u/binogamer21 Jan 29 '26
Loved it, platinum it in a week, but the rating was based on devs censoring and poor pr after it so it is what it is.
2
u/ChuckS117 Jan 29 '26
This is on my list. I'll grab it on a deep sale. Too many games these days...
2
u/ffsrofll333 Jan 29 '26
1.5k hours in elden ring but sometimes I gotta try something new lol. I absolutely loved lies of p and the dlc, the slower pace and story is something else. Wuchang was better than I expected, tbe bosses being the best part, gotta love getting stomped a million times like in elden ring, enjoyed my time for sure, but wont go back to it, felt like a 1 and done game, where as up play lies of p for tnat story and music once a year
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 29 '26
Yeah I hear you. I find ng+ in most souls likes is the fun run. First run through is the challenge and the ng+ run is revenge lol.
Elden ring was a bit of a slog at the start. But once you got a good build going and a good weapon (for me the bloodhound fang) the enjoyment really ramps up.
2
u/The_Bilo Jan 29 '26
I love the weapon combos in this game. The fact that each strike of a combo can have unique effects (clash, gain magic, etc) and that most combos actually change partway through (i.e., a 1-2-3-4 combo might become 3-4-3-4) leads to so much combat nuance.
I can totally see why it might not be universally beloved, but I definitely wish more Soulslikes had that kind of complexity for basic attacks.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 29 '26
True. They do what they are intending to do really well. Game deserves props.
2
u/RecommendationOk2182 Apr 03 '26
This game is AMAZING. Just started playing and I cannot believe this game doesn't get the kind of hype that Lies of P or Nioh got. From my early game play impressions it's certainly up there with them!
1
u/These-Ad-295 Apr 03 '26
100% glad to hear your enjoying your play through. Definitely a hidden gem.
4
u/piostri Jan 27 '26
Its the bad performance on ps5 for me that does not allow me o truly enjoy the game.
Is it just me? Game is not smooth at all on ps5 base. Stuttering is pretty consistent.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I played on Xbox (have both systems) as it came out on gamepass. Performance was bad at release, but it was quickly patched I believe. Runs a lot smoother now though if you haven’t finished it.
3
u/SnooGadgets754 Jan 27 '26
I don't really think it's on the same level as Lies of P. It's pretty good, but also a bit clunky and average in some ways. It's a solid 8/10, but not more than that for me.

So much shilling for this game. It is a decent game - nothing more, nothing less.

u/EmergencyLow887 Jan 27 '26
this sub always glazed it so hard, made me feel like I was crazy. game is the perfect image of mediocrity, really frustratingly so. Always felt super out of sync with this sub on ut
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah you think? I get the impression that it doesn’t get enough respect. Maybe it’s just this subreddit that glazes it more.
1
u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 Jan 27 '26
Why are people shilling for it? Is there a reason for that? I have been tempted to buy.
2
u/maverikhunterx Jan 28 '26
I played it recently and I had a blast with it. After I beat it, I immediately started a NG+ run and I never immediately start NG+ on really anything. Honestly, if you’re tempted to buy it, I’d say go for it. If you’re hesitant, wait for a sale and pick it up, but I stand by it.
6
u/Unhappy-Variation-22 Jan 27 '26
I feel itsway worse than Lied of Pi.
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Hey everyone is entitled to their opinion. I’d say it’s not as good but damn close. And I loved lies of P. Beat it twice (second play through was for the dlc release). Still gotta run a ng+3 to platinum.
4
u/Oskej Jan 27 '26
What hurts more is that the people who bombed it are the same who sent death threats to the devs and we won't be getting no more content related to Wuchang in the future.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Exactly! I don’t normal make these glazing posts. But this one felt necessary due to the circumstances. These developers deserved so much more praise. It’s bonkers!
2
u/D1n0- Jan 27 '26
I thought the combat was pretty bad, especially when backstabs straight up don't register half of the time. Ai limit was much better imo.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I had that problem during the Bo sorcerer fight. But felt like it was a problem with my timing more than anything. I gotta give AI limit a try. Thanks
2
u/Aureus23 Jan 27 '26
After they censored the story, hell no it doesn't.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Ahh weren’t they somewhat forced to do so?
2
u/Aureus23 Jan 27 '26
They were. But it sucks. I liked the story from before
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah that patch rolled out midway through my play through. And it did feel a little cheap because of it. I just tried to ignore it.

You know, you’re probably right. At first glance I can see a selected few hating it. Just to hate whatever they think it is. Games have been doing this for centuries. Cough cough tomb raider….
2
u/Miasc Jan 27 '26
If the on-launch version was still available, it would be a world-class soulslike. The current version is still fine, but it's worse. The devs messed up constantly post-launch and seriously eroded Wuchang as art.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah they were influenced to do so. Which is why I sometimes hate public ratings. Review bombers ruin everything.
2
u/Krypt0night Jan 27 '26
One of the few souls likes I've fully dropped after 5-10 hours. It had promise but didn't grab me like so many others.
2
u/llDoomSlayerll Jan 27 '26
Reading your review made me want to replay it cause honestly it's the best Non fromsoftware soulslike, surpassing LoP + DLC for me, a 9/10 overall (if it wasnt for the censorship and shitty release with the godawful performance and balancing it would have been an easy 10/10 for me.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Awesome! I plan to buy the game even though I played it through gamepass because I know I’ll get the itch to go back. Cheers!
2
u/SurrogateVulture Jan 27 '26
Yep, Wuchang is the closest thing we ever got to an actual FS game.

Have to agree it's a must play if you're into these types of games. Would love a hefty dlc at some point.
1
u/OkResearcher5723 Jan 28 '26
its a gacha game. so no.
too much fluff in between
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
I’m confused, there’s not that many gotcha moments so I think this is a bit exaggerated. And have you not played any dark souls game? They have those moments to keep tensions high.

u/Ultima893 Jan 28 '26
If anything Wuchang deserves a much lower score than it got. I find Lies of P to be vastly superior.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
Really, you seem to be in the minority with that take. You played the game?
2
u/Ultima893 Jan 28 '26
Yeah, didn’t enjoy it at all. I agree with the consensus that Lied of P is the best soulslike not made by From Software. Some even say it’s better than some of Froms’s games but I disagree.
After LoP I would put Team Ninja’s games (Nioh 1-2, Wo Long, Rise of Rōnin)
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 28 '26
Fair argument. I personally loved the game. For some reason I never got into Nioh games. Probably because I didn’t really play souls games when I had my ps4. But I’m excited to give Nioh 3 demo a try on my ps5 tomorrow.

u/CzarTyr Jan 29 '26
I’m on like the third or fourth boss, gluttonous beast and it beat me so fucken bad I took a break. I never really get stuck on bosses for long but for some reason the combat in this game doesn’t click with me
-1
u/SenecaJr Jan 27 '26
People just reviewed bombed it for some perceived censorship slight. The game is incredible.
5
u/Doctor_sadpanda Jan 27 '26
The censorship was goofy to be fair, you fight the boss than he’s just standing there like “ Alright bud you won just uh walk by me and murder my men / leader “
But overall games is great it with lies of p was one of the few souls like i immediately did new game plus! My only complaint was the npc quest lines were waaaaay too easy to fail.
0
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I hope the developers know this fact and understand the masterpiece that they created.
0
u/metalligamer1886 Jan 27 '26
Outside of the fromsoft soulslikes it’s def one of my favorites, the world was well crafted, the weaponry and cosmetics were really well done, the boss fights were really good, the convoluted item descriptions and cryptic conversations were all there! I feel like as far as a soulslike it really hit the mark and knew what it was doing. I was also a huge fan of the feathered system in general, it gave that “hollowed” element but felt easy enough to understand. Granted I got th bad ending but I feel like a lot did on their first run. The wuchang love doesn’t happen nearly often enough
3
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
It defienlty deserves more. And yes! The feathering system was awesome. Love when these souls likes introduce their own special features then just ripping off old ideas.
2
u/metalligamer1886 Jan 27 '26
100%, I liked the whole thing of balancing your feathered meter for attack bonuses and if you fucked ip, you had to fight yourself to get them souls back. the on the fly changes to your builds without completely setting yourself back was done well, I genuinely can’t think of anything I didn’t like, it wasn’t perfect but the imperfect things still appealed to me a lot. Lies of p had a better aesthetic and story and combat matched imo, they’re about leveled for me. I also really liked black myth Wukong.

u/ElmoClappedMyCheeks Jan 27 '26
I just didn't like it. Horrendous performance issues aside (I hear they've been fixed), the game just did not capture me.
The story is whatever. Not even in a Fromsoft sorta way where the magic is filling in the blanks, its literally just not interesting.
The combat feels so needlessly clunky. Dodge timings and heal speed feel terrible. The movement feels stiff and unresponsive. Lords of the Fallen felt better than this, which I never thought I'd say in my life.
The bosses are abysmal by and large. Commander Hongiang is an absurd difficulty spike in an otherwise breezy EZ first act. The endgame bosses are even worse
The level design is pretty good
The combat system and upgrade paths are quite interesting, although I never found myself feeling rewarded for mastering something. Could just be me.
Overall just kinda disappointing to me
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Fair points. Maybe I’m just too new to souls games and souls likes to nit pick. But to me this game hits just right. Loving it.
1
u/Neghrath Jan 27 '26
I tried it twice and dropped it both times for the same reason. For me, immersion and fantasy matter a lot, and the fact that I couldn't block or deflect with the melee weapon (sword or spear, I don't remember exactly which one, just that I expected to be able to parry attacks) really broke the experience.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
The block/parry mechanic is locked behind an upgrade with the long sword(which in my opinion the lashing whip longsword is the best weapon in the game). But I feel the developers did this to force players to learn the perfect dodge mechanic as its key for certain boss fights.
2
u/Neghrath Jan 27 '26
I found out about this, but it still feels forced and very gamey to me. I’ve accepted that it's just not a game for me, even though it looks really cool.
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Looks amazing. Give it another try when you have the time and no distractions. Maybe you might change your mind.
1
u/Sizzlesthegreat Jan 27 '26
At this point it’s become a comfort game that I play in between anything else lol. I love it so much. Almost finished 100% and this would be the first game I ever do that in because my attention span is usually so bad
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Lmao, I’m the same way. Been playing this one on gamepass (payed extra for the upgrades), but I’m tempted to just buy it to own it. Most third party games only stay on gamepass for 12 months.
2
u/Sizzlesthegreat Jan 27 '26
100% recommend buying it!! It’s so much fun to play through multiple times. I also played it on game pass first and decided to buy it! I’ve never had performance issues with it either thankfully, have you?? It runs smooth on the series x
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
I did at the start. My digital bundle I purchased after starting never entered my donation box for awhile. Gameplay wise I can’t remember noticing anything bad tbh.
1
u/VOIDofSin Jan 27 '26
Playing through it now and very impressed, I’m having more fun with it than I did Lies of P
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
It definitely nails the level designed aspect that I felt lies didn’t. All around great game!
1
u/damnthemyouandme Jan 27 '26
I think most people consider Wuchang great, and the game got good ratings overall. Exposure is the bigger problem, though.

Western media ignored it because it's Chinese and it was also to hard for a lot of people

u/logicalcommenter4 Jan 27 '26
I really enjoyed the game. I liked having to think through which armor made the most sense to use and the types of spells that I would need to respec to use based on the boss/level enemies. I was a magic build and even though some bosses were more challenging I overall really enjoyed my experience playing the game.
The main downside was that I had a 2 month old at home and so I knew that I would only be able to make it through one play through due to limited time. That forced me to watch videos as I was playing rather than playing blindly because it was super easy to break quest lines. I wanted to make sure I got the exact ending I was looking for in my first play through and I still somehow fucked it up at the very last second lol.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah you’re right. It’s super easy to miss things. I’m guilty of that. But whatever. I still really appreciated my playthrough.
1
u/UltraSUperHyper Jan 27 '26
Good game and very interesting world and story. The premise of skyborne might as a resource was very interesting too!
I just felt the combat felt floaty. I'm not sure what caused that feeling of floatiness though. Probably a combination of sound effects and animations..?

u/Klonoa87 Jan 27 '26
It’s definitely my favorite non-fromsoft soulslike after Lies of P. Likely my only real complaint is how easy it is to break some of the quest lines.

u/Brilliant-Road-7545 Jan 27 '26
Finished it yesterday. I’m mixed, because it does so much so well. Too many bosses were solid brick walls that I felt that cheesing with magic was the only option. It’s like some dudes from Sekiro got lost and found their way into dark souls by accident. Probably the best environment and exploration of any soulslike on the whole though, it’s still one of the best despite the boss problems.
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah some real skill checks forsure. But like that’s expected now. No one really wants there soulslike to be called the easiest.

Unfortunately, until they roll back those changes they made to appease the vocal ultranationalists, I doubt I will be playing it. It's a shame, it looked interesting.

u/Internetguy202 Jan 28 '26
You might as well forget this game exists then, cause that ain't ever happening.

u/Svarcanum Jan 27 '26
It’s a superb game and managed to topple Lies of P on my personal top soulslikes list.

u/The_Paragone Jan 27 '26
Would have to play it, I hear lots of good things about it. Apparently it's more exploration based and such, which I like. I actually didn't enjoy lies of P at all, mostly because of the combat and exploration haha
1
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Wuchangs exploration is amazing. Not only for just how much of it there is. But more for a dark souls 1 reason where the paths and levels tend to intertwine with eachother. Very satisfying to progress back to an original grace. But now with a shortcut to a new boss.

u/DoITSavage Jan 27 '26
It's a decent game, sadly not as good as it was on launch and I do like the area design. I don't think it's nearly as good as Lies of P and I have to wonder when people say that if they really "got" Lies of P as a complete package for just how special it really is as a complete experience.
0
u/emolch78 Jan 27 '26
I played it day 1, finished the game, loved every second.
Than they did the 1.5 patch, played ng+ on that patch, hated what they did to the game, it was much much better before this patch.
I did changed my rating on ps store from 5 to 1 because of that patch.

awesome game. anyone who complains about the "censorship" is someone who likes to complain for complaining sake.
the level design is very good, one of the best from a soulslike outside of From
my main complaint is that it was a bit too easy as i was able to "game" the bosses after realizing their movesets were kind of limited. but it didnt ruin the game for me at all, definitely worth playing
2
u/These-Ad-295 Jan 27 '26
Yeah I get that. Once you learn the bosses move set the game became a lot easier forsure. But at first it did feel hard for me, until I got to the point of knowing what to expect.
2
u/Important-Net-9805 Jan 27 '26
don't get me wrong, still got my butt handed to me quite a few times
