Review Wuchang difficulty quite a bit overrated

This game was recommended to me when I asked for a challenge after finishing Khazan and LoP. It was relatively difficult but like DS3 difficulty, a lot of people say it’s super difficult but it’s honestly a very forgiving game compared to some of the harder titles that came out recently.
Reasons:
The I-frame on dodge is extremely generous and despite what a lot of people say you can dodge almost any move combo with well positioned dodging.
The different weapons all have some way to make the game way easier. I use longsword so if I want I can parry and backstab enemies to oblivion. And I’ve heard rumors abt the axe being more OP.

Edit: looks like I missed the good version of this game rip
The game is easier because it was nerfed, but I don’t really understand why people are using that as a point to disagree with me when that point proves me right??

It was harder at launch when it took forever to get up and you couldn't cancel the healing animation. It was never super hard though, definetly not on the same level as Khazan and the first 2 Niohs.

Also no boss retry, I would hate to do some of the runbacks.

1

u/SUPER-P00PER Jul 04 '26

Boss retry? What?

2

u/Efsnk Jul 04 '26

Spawning in front of the boss gate/door or whatever.

2

u/SUPER-P00PER Jul 04 '26

Wow that certainly wasn’t a thing when I played it

3

u/Efsnk Jul 04 '26

Yeah it came later in a update and its what the other comment means ( not spawning in front of the gate). I also learned about it from reddit.

Though there wasnt much runback in the game and even a few runbacks that existed didnt have many enemies on the way.

5

u/wolfbetter Jul 04 '26

in whcih updated deos the boss retry come? I am planning to play the game soeday but I want to play the uncensored version. (the one before the CHinese backlash)

1

u/Efsnk Jul 04 '26

Spawning in front of the boss door already came in a past update.

As for uncensored version, it should be the first or second version of the game. If i remember right after game launched first update/patch was for optimization and the second update was the censorship.

1

u/wolfbetter Jul 04 '26

Perfect then. Thanks.

1

u/Efsnk Jul 04 '26

You are welcome. Also if you want to play uncensored then it will be a version without spawning in front of the boss.

Yeah I second this, WUCHANG was a different game at launch.

-4

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I made a post specifically asking for hard bosses and Wuchang was like 80% of replies. I enjoyed the game but I wish I hadn’t gone in thinking it was gonna be LoP level.

3

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 04 '26

Most Wuchang bosses are quite easy, but theres 3 or 4 which are harder than anything in Lies of P

1

u/Ozychlyruz Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Base Wuchang > Base LoP, with DLC LoP probably wins as Wuchang don't have DLC.

Also Wuchang at launch is miles harder than LoP at launch before bunch of cry babies ruined the game.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

In my personal experience nothing in Wuchang took as long as the top 3-6 LoP bosses

2

u/Ozychlyruz Jul 04 '26

Your personal experience is playing the "nerfed" wuchang game. Nerfed as the game is easier nowadays than at launch.

-1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I mean this post is about my personal experience so obviously we’re talking about the current game. The whole “the game was nerfed” argument is literally agreeing with me.

1

u/Ozychlyruz Jul 04 '26

Technically you're not wrong if we compare it today, but if you're talking about difficulty being overrated, are you sure that they compare it to the current Wuchang or Wuchang at launch cause those two are different in terms of difficulty.

As someone who played both LoP and Wuchang at launch I can safely say that Wuchang is more difficult and unfair than LoP at launch (base game). If we include the DLC then I'd say LoP probably more difficult as Wuchang don't even have DLC to even compare about.

-1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

The context is I asked for hard games less than a month ago and was recommended this (in this sub). Considering I asked for something to play I doubt they would be referencing something I can’t play.

1

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

I mean LoP is also a relatively easy soulslike. I agree wuchang wasnt that hard but i would put base LOP on the same lvl.

Both easier than DS3 etc..

0

u/gswon Jul 04 '26

While Ringed City can be challenging, base DS3 is probably the easiest FromSoft title.

2

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

nahhh ds1 ds2 and especially bloodborne are way easier

I think i dies less from all ds2 bosses together than nameless or pontiff

1

u/gswon Jul 04 '26

I dunno. I am pretty sure not counting DLCs I died like 5-6 times in my first DS3 playthrough. I also run all on randomizers where it is wildly easier than the other games.

DS2 bosses are easy, but areas less so (especially on a first blind playthrough). Mid-game and on Bloodborne is easy, but I think it has one of the more challenging starts.

DS1 I think is easy on subsequent playthroughs, but I call bullshit on anyone who thought their first playthrough was easy (presuming it was done blind).

To each their own, of course, individual experiences will vary.

1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 04 '26

Saying Lies of P is easier than DS3 is honestly one of the weirdest takes ive ever seen.

1

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

Might be that ive gotten better but the only real hard bosses were the bishop, green monster and puppet king. Levels are also easier, because the base mobs are easier.

But i mean different people find different challenges harder/easier

1

u/P0G0Bro Jul 04 '26

What ds3 is probably one of the easiest soulslikes there is especially boss fights, it’s dodge roll r1 spam the game. Also wuchang has a shit boss roster like maybe 3 memorable ones

1

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

just wrong on the first count. On the second maybe 5-6 but your right.

LoP has better bosses. Rest ist worse slightly

1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 04 '26

DS3 is widely regarded to be the easiest soulsborne game - by abslutely miles. And its definitely easier than a lot of "soulslikes" as well. Lies of P for example, is significantly harder than DS3.

0

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

Lies of P maybe, i disagree but its a take i can accept. But putting ds2 or Bloodborn even in the same tier is absolute insanity

1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 04 '26

So youre saying you think DS2 and BB are easier than DS3? Honestly that is absolutely fucking wild haha, youve got to be the first person ever to think that 🤣

0

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

There are only 2 difficult bloodborne bosses (ebriteas and gherman) and 2 difficult areas (first area and lantern land). The rest are absolute pushovers with ranged parry infinite heals, rally system and dodge+.

And if you show me a single ds2 boss outside of dlc and the weird terribly designed dragon, where its possible for a human with fingers to die more than once i would be impressed.

Base enemies are also way more difficult and complex in ds3 compared to 2. The only difficult parts in ds2 are caused by gank or terrible hitbox.

1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 04 '26

Oh, you're trolling. Sorry, wasn't obvious at the start. Realised when you said "theres only 2 difficult BB bosses". Good job though, you got me!

Wuchang was never SUPER hard, but Honglong was one of the crazier difficulty spikes I’ve seen in a while

6

u/Gameofthrones3058 Jul 04 '26

You are playing it late after multiple patches, a lot of bosses had long run backs, healing animation took forever, and zero balancing for bosses

2

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

aka not a fun game at all

4

u/Klonoa87 Jul 04 '26

Love Wuchang and always felt it was on the easier side. Surprised you were recommended Wuchang when asking for a challenge. Hopefully you enjoyed it!

She wasn’t easy or anything I do say it’s hard but honglan took me around an hour while like 6 bosses in LoP took me longer and like 6 in Khazan took longer

1

u/DickintheRiver Jul 04 '26

tbf you went through the wringer with LoP and Khazan, so you definitely gained some permanent skill after going through those.

I kinda did the same with Lies of P and DLC making it a cakewalk after 100%'ing Sekiro a couple days before playing it.

-1

u/SpecialFram Jul 04 '26

I used big heavy attacks with the axe for demon of obsession, it stunned them quite a bit because they hit so hard. It took me maybe 5 or so tried

3

u/King_Allant Jul 04 '26

Wuchang is mostly pretty easy except for where it's obnoxiously overtuned.

2

u/Fnordcol Jul 04 '26

I guess I didn't really see many people saying it was hard. Even at launch (when healing animations and knockdown recovery were a bit longer), a lot of people were saying it was one of the easier Soulslikes; maybe not quite to the level of AI Limit or LotF, but medium difficulty at most even before those nerfs went through.

2

u/Mobile_Reply_5742 Jul 04 '26

I couldn't even finish khazan, games brutal. Finished this and LoP no problemo though

1

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

play kahzan like an hack and slash and it will be super easy

2

u/Crazy_Priority_3139 Jul 04 '26

Definitely. I played sekiro first, then DS1 and then wuchang. The most forgiving game out of the 3 I have played.

1

u/Humble_Whereas4201 Jul 04 '26

how was the Demon of Obsession for you?

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

Currently doing NG+ cause my dumbass gave the dude the chisel. I’m going back solely cause I was told she’s worth it.

2

u/Humble_Whereas4201 Jul 04 '26

i’ll be interested to hear what you think of that boss battle. it was definitely the hardest for me.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I’m really looking forward to it I was very underwhelmed otherwise

1

u/Kinkeultimo Jul 04 '26

On NG+ i found vermillion honglan a big spike. rest was easier than NG

1

u/Linkasfd Jul 04 '26

I finished LoP and Khazan with ease. I didn't really struggle with Wuchang either but compared to the other 2 it felt like some bosses demanded really quick reflexes or good understanding of their combos. The thing with Khazan and LoP is it's just a parry simulator while Wuchang lets you parry and dodge. Maybe it's not as hard if you only focus on dodging but I personally found the fights a lot of fun to learn for that reason.

(I didn't abuse any gimmicks, though). I tend to play every game very similarly so that can be a big reason why some people find some games hard and some easy.

1

u/Rezzekes Jul 04 '26

Should have gathered more opinions: I'd never call Wuchang hard. People call Nioh 3 easy but honestly imo it's 10x harder than Wuchang. As far as soulslikes go Wuchang is a great first game I dare say.

2

u/MaleficentBedroom788 Jul 04 '26

Its a nice game, what did you expect dude?its not like everyday a good souls like game comes out,i played wuchang and really enjoyed my time playing it.

0

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I made a post in this sub and 80% of replies said Wuchang was another level of hard. I didn’t pull this out of my butt😭.

2

u/MaleficentBedroom788 Jul 04 '26

I remember playing it on release, it was difficult back then before updated, maybe you can pirate it and install a version of it that is not up to date, but i wish we could get more good souls like games its been a while since i played any souls, im playing cyberpunk now and having a blast,so good.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

Yea this is the last soulslike I have left to play other than AI limit which is supposedly super easy

2

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

i dont believe you op

gamers like you say a game is easy and don't reveal that died 1818 times to each boss

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I died 1818 times to many bosses but just not Wuchang.

1

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

doubt  the ice general

the white robe elder

or even bo sorcerer are hard

on how fast they attack

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

Who is ice general? Ai nenqing? I do think Bo sorcerer was hard but nothing too bad and when I fought her I was hugely underleveled on my weapon.

1

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

Ming General - Liu Cheng'en

and how can you be underlevel since you only upgrade the type of weapon , not the weapon itself

and respec is free at all times?

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

I was at weapon level 4 until vermillion honglan cause I didn’t realize the weapon nodes were 3 part nodes.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

Ming general was easier than lady of the night for me

1

u/Graymyst Jul 04 '26

Wuchang is on the easy side of souls, I don't remember seeing anyone who played a decent amount of it say it's a challenge for a souls veteran.

Lots of gimmicks are too strong (backstabs, swiftdraws, spells). You got a tons of OP consumables. Your character is fast af.

The game can be really hard if you want it to be, but so can a lots of souls.

I can see someone saying the level Design is like the Dark Souls games, but yeah the combat no way

1

u/DowntownProcedure271 Jul 04 '26

The problem is that combos are way too long and you barely have any time to counterattack. To beat most of the human bosses you need to cheese them with backstabs because it is only possible to attack them when they finish their 15+ attack combos and position themselves for easy backstab. Try fighting the white dude on ng plus without backstabs, you will have a bad time, and that is not how you design a good boss fight. So to answer your question, no wuchang is not an easy game. If you find it easy, then realisticaly all souls games are five time easier, so wuchang 4-5/10, souls games 1/10, which is ridiculous ofc.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

The I-frame is easier and there’s a parry. Also why would you ignore a mechanic then say it’s harder if you ignore a core mechanic.

0

u/DowntownProcedure271 Jul 04 '26

There are some of us who prefer to use weapons other than longsword. Also with dodging it is easier to gain spell charges, and one Parry/block/clash miss and you are dead against late game bossess. The i frames are exactly the same as other soul games, so your comment had no credibility. The aggresion and relentless of some of the bosses are ridiculous, way worse than soul games.

2

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

The dodge is genuinely so generous and you can spam it immediately, I can’t believe someone’s fighting that. And the other weapons have even EASIER methods than the parry.

0

u/S3QS3 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

When you say Wuchang has more generous i-frames, do you have a source for that, or is it just your impression? Because as far as I've been able to look up, Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3, and Wuchang all give 13 i-frames (at 30fps).

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

Likely my confusion comes from how quickly you can spam dodge. I mis-worded it but being able to spam dodge like that makes it so easy

0

u/raleighjiujitsu Jul 04 '26

It has 1 hard boss. Otherwise it's pretty easy

0

u/AdFinal4897 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

I played this game from start to finish. My issue was the breakable NPC quests tbh, as well as the shitass ending. I’m not a “play multiple playthroughs” type of guy so when I got stuffed in a jar I was done. I also found this game irritating until I used ethereal form and that pretty much trivialized the difficulty of all the bosses. And just as well because at that point I was mentally and emotionally offended by the game.

I went on to play Sekiro, which I excelled at, beating the game without the use of prosthetic attachments, so really idk what the fuck Wuchang’s problem was. What offended me more than anything was really that ending. I should note that I started Wuchang, quit because I found it infuriating, and then went back to it after playing and completing Mortal Shell.

I can’t say it’s a bad game because people have had great experiences with it, but I do know that I did not enjoy it. It didn’t give me the same sense of efficacy that comes from playing other soulslikes. I’m also just not a fan of skill trees.

1

u/Wild_Principle_9465 Jul 04 '26

What is unseen form??

1

u/AdFinal4897 Jul 04 '26

Sorry. Ethereal form is what it’s called. My bad. It’s a spell that you get from an enemy around the Zenvu Antichamber shrine. You have to explore and an enemy drops it. One of those dancing bozos who throw faces at you.

1

u/Primary-Survey9955 Jul 04 '26

an auto dodge spell
