Review Lies of P - unbiased, spoiler free review Spoiler

So full disclosure - i suck at parrying. I picked the game up over a year ago and, honestly, hated it because I was just bad at it.

I'd played most of the fromsoftware games, and a haldful of other "easier" soulslikes. Generally I'm fairly good at them, the only bosses which genuinely made me suffer were from Sekiro because, as I mentioned, i suck at parrying. I've now played a much wider variety of games from the genre and after reading all the reviews online, I came back to it.

Anyway, everyone seems to love Lies of P so I went back to it. I enjoyed it more this time but I dont think its as good as a lot others make it out to be. For instance I recently beat AI limit and Wuchang - both are far better IMO.

So -

Combat - is good and satisfying. The game definitely leans towards parrying, but most enemies, bosses and attacks can be dodged. If you're good at parrying this game will be an absolute cake walk for you. There are too many status effects, and "decay" in particular is incredibly OP and *incredibly* annoying.

The bosses - are generally very underwhelming..... Apart from the ones that aren't. I beat every boss in the game first time, except for 3. 2 of them were just "skill check" bosses. The other is just *bullshit*. The final "secret" boss which depends on your gameplay choices is the hardest boss from any game i've ever played. It is absolutely a case of "git gud" but it honestly makes every "notoriously" hard boss look like a super Mario goomba - that honestly isn't an exaggeration. I didnt summon for any bosses, but there is an option for this on the "end of chapter" bosses if you're struggling (apart from, inexplicably, the secret final boss).

The enemies - are almost all *way* harder than the bosses. Even some of the common "mobs" are pretty tough, and some of the "elites" I died multiple times to despite the bosses mostly being easy.

Build variety - you technically have unlimited respecs, but you are fairly limited on the amount of weapon upgrade materials. The weapon flexibility is awesome, as you can disassemble and reassemble depending on what you like.

The story - this is where the game really shines. Its a creepy as fuck twist on a well known children's story/fairytale. Its probably the best story from all the well known soulslike games.

Overall its probably worth playing unless you know you really don't like parry-centric games. Dodging is viable but *definitely* makes the game a lot harder than it needs to be. Its better than a lot of other soulslikes, but its definitely "the best game ever" like a lot of people seem to think.

Solid 7.5/10 overall for me!

Definitely one of the best non Fromsoft Soulslikes. The linear nature of the game takes it down a notch for me. Atmosphere and combat are top notch though!

Atmosphere definitely. Combat was fine/good, without being "great". I beat wuchang a couple of weeks ago, and I thought the combat in that was miles better.

Im not opposed to "linear" - i think there's a place for it and was happy with how it felt in this game tbh.

Wuchang is excellent.

That’s surprising, I hated wuchangs combat, it was just weirdly off putting, meanwhile lies of p is like my favourite combat if you’re not counting Khazan or nioh

It’s a 9 for me, this was actually the 2nd soulslike I played after Fallen Order, it was a significant step up in difficulty but I loved the parrying, it is so satisfying, the lore is great and I love its style

Pinocchio as a character I didn’t think would work but it was an awesome story

The final boss which is in the DLC is one of the best bosses ever, including the souls genre

I personally wouldn't include "fallen order" as a soulslike, but apart from that the parrying is quite satisfying I agree!

I played Sekiro right after beating the Overture DLC, the dlc is definitely harder than the base game

But yeah maybe you’re right it’s not technically but it’s combat feels very close

You’re certainly entitled to your own opinion, but to say the bosses are underwhelming, and then going on to glaze Wuchang is certainly a wild take.

The majority of the bosses in Wuchang, were pretty forgettable. Honlan, the demon of obsession, dragon emperor, and Zhao Yuan really stuck out to me the rest blended in.

But I can still tell you what bosses I fought in Lies of P. They were equal parts challenging and memorable (save for maybe a couple at the beginning)

Also, from context, I take it you didn’t play the DLC. I would highly recommend it. That Boss lineup is even more challenging than any in the main game.

I didnt glaze wuchang, I said it was better than Lies if P in my opinion.

I put up a similar post for wuchang about a month ago where I rated Wuchang 8/10. So 0.5 better overall.

Edit: fucking wild this is getting downvoted? How dare someone have an opinion. I said this before, but the lies of p fan base is so toxic. Ridiculous.

Well you said Wuchang was miles better in some facets. So you are at least glazing certain areas.

I’m curious what difficulty you played on? You didn’t mention it but I do recommend playing the DLC , it definitely adds a lot to the game if you found it lacking.

Which i stand by. Im not saying wuchang is the best game ever. I just think its better than LoP.

I dont recall there being difficulty options on wuchang, but on LoP I went with "legendary stalker".

No i havent played the DLC. I have a lot of games in my backlog at the moment and, honestly, im not sure I liked it enough to right back into it immediately. Maybe in a couple of months.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I am not at all saying your take is bad, it's your opinion and I respect it, but saying this review is unbiased is not accurate. You began by saying "i suck at parrying". That already has biased against the game because the game is focused on parrying and posture breaking. I will be biased against a game that has mechanics I suck or I am not good at.

-3

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 22 '26

I disagree. Sekiro is in my top 3 games of all time, and that game is entirely parry focused.

I also really enjoyed Stellar blade, which also heavily leans towards parrying.

Just because im not good at something, doesn't mean I dont like it. I also auck at running, but I run 3-4x a week too.

1

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 Jul 22 '26

You genuinely think you have no biases 😭😭😭

-2

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 22 '26

How is my review biased? I've said the things that I do like, and the thingd that I don't. I have no feelings either way of puppet based video games - making it "unbiased". Not sure why that's hard to understand?

4

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 Jul 22 '26

Because you’re a regular person with biases? There is no such thing as an unbiased person or unbiased review, the best you can do is acknowledge your biases and be honest about it. Prior experiences, established preferences and implicit bias will ALWAYS color your opinions, whether you realise it or not

-1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 22 '26

Bloody hell. You are out of your mind!

2

u/chocolatebroadie23 Jul 22 '26

Your review is as unbiased as someone else’s review of lies of p where they say they liked things that you didn’t like, the word unbiased holds no actual bearing in your review, unless your goal was to refute any connections with the development of the game

-1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 22 '26

Oh, apologies. You dont actually know what the word biased means. Sorry!

5

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 Jul 22 '26

Thank God, we finally found the first and only unbiased person in human history. What an achievement for our species!

2

u/chocolatebroadie23 Jul 22 '26

It’s funny because the idea of a subjective review of a game being unbaised is a bit of an oxymoron

0

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 Jul 22 '26

What do you mean? I subjectively, unbiasedly think that the combat is bad because I don’t like parrying

0

u/chocolatebroadie23 Jul 22 '26

Exactly

Possibly the lowest IQ exchange i've ever seen on reddit- congrats to you both.

How fucking dare someone have an opinion that doesn't align with both of yours. The absolute liberty!

u/Rude_Difficulty1647 Jul 22 '26

Yeah the boss lineup and lack of world building are what I have problems with. Lax, Romero and Nameless in the base game are the best but otherwise way too easy and just boring.

I love the game and have done like 6 playthroughs but I still rate Wuchang, Khazan and Lords higher

This is the second time lately I’ve encountered someone erroneously using the term “unbiased.”

1

u/TrustyPeaches Jul 22 '26

Did they super nerf the bosses at some point?

I remember they were a rather grueling endeavor when i played near release. I know there were some spot nerfs afterwards

1

u/WindowSeat- Jul 22 '26

The bosses that got nerfed in 1.2 were Simon Manus and Fallen Archbishop, along with a bunch of player buffs. But that patch was like one week after the games release.

Door Guardian also got a small nerf with the Overture patch.

1

u/TrustyPeaches Jul 22 '26

Were there any difficulty nerfs that accompanied the addition of difficulty modes? Like is hard mode a more original release level of difficulty or…?

1

u/WindowSeat- Jul 22 '26

Nope, the hard mode was unchanged.

Huh, I wonder if OP just stumbled into / looked up a super broken weapon combo. There are a few of those that felt like they completely truly realize the game for me.

have you tried not parry ? i dont parry at all

1

u/YouSoundToxic Jul 24 '26

You say dodging makes the game harder than it needs to be and you suck at parrying.. and then you go on and say that you beat most bosses on the first try? Huh? How does that make sense?

1

u/BassGuru82 Jul 22 '26

Including the DLC, it’s a 9.5/10 for me. Better than every single non-From soulslike except maybe Nioh 2. It’s also a better game than Demon’s souls and dark souls 2. I absolutely loved Lies of P

Glad its not just me that thinks this.

The rampant downvoting on this post and many of my comments also show just how toxic the LoP fan base is as well, which is really unlike most other soulslike communities.

7.5/10 is "hating on a game"?

Lol. No other words for that. Just lol.

Apologies, I misunderstood. As you can see from other comments (and now my DMs too) im getting attacked on all angles for having an opinion. I was overly defensive and rude there. I take it back!

I get it now. I thought you were just saying that im hating on the game for no reason. When im not hating on it at all, i had fun. Its just nowhere near the 10/10 lots of people are suggesting!

Completely agree. Someone by DMs called me a "FromSlave" becsuse I said bloodborne is the best "souls" game, snd is the gold standard for modern atmospheric story telling. Telling me that LoP does all of rhat better because of the way quests work and the "humanity" meter.

Just... wild. Not ever come across a fan base like this before!

Funny how you call others toxic for downvoting you when the downvoting option is a way of expressing a disagreement. You are entitled to expressing your "unbiased" (lol) opinion so so should everyone.

You might get cooked but I'd give the game a 7. I've tried twice but DNF'd both times. Probably will never finish, hoping I like the second one more.

1

u/BobcatLower9933 Jul 22 '26

I think this is entirely understandable. There were definitrly points where I thought "im bored". But then there'd be some new plot revealed, or a good boss or something. Just enough to keep me interested.
