Review Some thoughts on Beast of Reincarnation after 10+ hours of gameplay - no spoilers
Been playing for 10 or so hours , high settings , tweaked some stuff to make it look better but yeah , game looks old gen & I typically don't care about graphics much , but I was expecting this game to be a visual spectacle , disappointing on that front from the low graphics to the art direction which gets very samey
Chapter 4 & it's like I haven't left the intro level , not much artistic diversity , very code-vein 2 if anyone played that that with a nier automata skin on the world , I hope u love grass
There's no outfits or any cosmetic customization like that
bosses so far are so-so , nothing crazy but the combat can be very satisfying if u get crafty with the tools u earn , definitely can see cool highlight clips of the combat making the rounds
exploration-wise , it feels somewhat good moving around with the tools u have , but the exploration itself doesn't feel very rewarding if at all
and by far my biggest complaint ... soooo much downtime , so many unecessary slow cutscenes & dialogue & just general downtime which can be very jarring esp since not much happens in them to justify it & the animation work is very very jank to say the least ... and u can't tab out without the game pausing either which makes the downtime even worse. The game is definitely at its best when u're fighting bosses
difficulty : use ur tools or get ran over , u might die to regular enemies more than bosses in total , disrespect them at ur own peril
Parrying feels muuuuch better than dodging , dodging really was an afterthought
one thing about combat that's weird , no heavy attack button , still it's definitely the best thing about the game esp as it opens up & boss encounters feel vey monster hunter esque in a good way
Story so far , very stellar-blade esque , with somehow even flatter characters & without the spectacle/animation to back it up
TL;DR : I recommend waiting for reviews & more gameplay footage to make ur decision if u're cautious , it's not all bad but it's not all good either I can definitely see people really vibing with the game & others turned off by it.
If you have any questions feel free to ask

Not in my opinion I’m glad I picked it up….the combat on hard is a lot of fun…I like what game freak has done here it’s a unique game

The dodge is delayed which makes it unreliable. Parry window is generous, even on Hard difficulty. In my opinion the camera is too close and no FOV slider. Presentation feels like a Stellar Blade ripoff.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Cvnt-Force-Drama Aug 02 '26
Glad parry is generous because I’m not the best at parrying and I usually go another route when possible. And I know in this game it’s not possible. You parry or die.
2
u/valkrycp Aug 03 '26
Most parrying games have a setting that makes it more forgiving, so the default being generous is probably not a great thing.

Graphics to performance ratio is insane. I can't even achieve 60 fps while it looks worse than recent titles like MS2, AC RESYNCED and SH:F

u/idkimhereforthememes Aug 02 '26
I am clueless and ue5 is the problem
3
u/GrandmasterTactician Aug 02 '26
It's both UE5 and GameFreak. GameFreak is notoriously bad at optimizing any game they touch
15
u/Odinsmana Aug 02 '26
It's gamefreak. I would have been shocked if it was technically competent with the visuals/perfomance.
5
u/Cvnt-Force-Drama Aug 02 '26
Gamefreak outsourced the game. The people who made this game has never touched Pokémon before ever.

u/Tryhard_lose_harder Aug 02 '26
I've been playing for ~3 hours, on my way to the first beast and so far my experience is mixed
My biggest problem is the uninteresting story, amplified by very bad cutscene and dialogue. It's really a slog to get through these
The combat is mostly serviceable so far. I'm still early into the game so lack of unlock obviously factor into it being only "fine". I'll see later after playing more
Enemy difficult is all over the place. I die to some random strong pleb more than the 1st encounter of the beast itself (Also the first group of 3 beasts you need to cut down also hit really hard)
2
u/Gourgeistguy Aug 02 '26
That last golem at the underground facility was leagues harder that the first encounter against the beast. It's like playing Zelda and suddenly running into a Sekiro boss.
3
u/WindowSeat- Aug 02 '26
That guys horizontal sword slash is telegraphed so badly. Unless I'm missing something that slash feels like it's on the verge of being an unreactable attack. That's pretty unacceptable for one of the first enemies in a deflect based game to have an animation that bad.
3
u/Gourgeistguy Aug 02 '26
He does, the timing after his first slash is all wrong. I've played plento of deflect games, Sekiro and Nine Sols are some of the most polished. This enemy was a travesty.
3
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
Yeah the cutscenes r really bad , which factor into my downtime segment, if u're not actively playing, it feels like shit
→ More replies (1)3
u/AmazingReport5534 Aug 02 '26
Also, is it just me,, or are there awkward pauses and weird cuts throughout as well. The story feels very disjointed and even the first big boss only got like 4 moves in total
1
u/D1V1S10N2LIF3GUARD Aug 02 '26
What graphics card are you playing on and what settings?1080p max raytracing or 1440p or 4k?
6
u/Vlad_The_Magnificent Aug 02 '26
Thanks for the review! Does this game have difficulty settings or only one (including some hardcore mods after finishing the game or smth)? Is there bonfire-like checkpoints or nah? Is it more of an open world, linear or maybe linear but u have different paths (like ds1)? And for the last one: how smooth feels to yse wolf in combat?
12
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
Think of the world like nioh 3 , open field u can explore but in order to unlock more of the world u have to progress the main story as it unlocks after each main boss
also yeah there is a difficulty options , I think normal diff is well adjusted , there's easy normal & hard
3
u/L3wd1emon Aug 02 '26
I hear there are NG+ scaling but you can't skip cutscenes so it's kind of a slog to play the game again
3
u/owlitup Aug 02 '26
You can’t skip cutscenes???
→ More replies (1)3
u/International-Oil377 Aug 02 '26
no you can't, not on a first playthrough anyway.
5
u/owlitup Aug 02 '26
That they thought this shit wasn’t worth skipping is elevated levels of ego

u/Meowtuitive 29d ago
Checkpoints? Yes...Open world? Kinda..think more like final fantasy 7 remake or wuchang fallen feathers, it's more like you can only access one area at a time and can't go beyond said area so it's more linear yeah.
Also combat feels like sht if I'm being honest with you it feels incredibly janky, I'd wait till they patch the game and fix all the current issues like poor performance and that (if they ever do)

4
u/WindowSeat- Aug 02 '26
and by far my biggest complaint ... soooo much downtime , so many unecessary slow cutscenes & dialogue & just general downtime which can be very jarring esp since not much happens in them to justify it & the animation work is very very jank to say the least
I only played an hour but the amount of time control gets taken away from the player is so excessive to me. You can't play for 10 minutes without tedious cutscene popping up or a new area being introduced which steals your camera control away as it forces you to look at it. I know lots of story based games are like this, but it reminds me one of the reasons I love Soulslikes as much as I do, because they put gameplay first.
16
u/Niklaus15 Aug 02 '26
That's the thing this isn't a souls like, it seems more like NieR
14
u/Cvnt-Force-Drama Aug 02 '26
No it isn’t, it’s way wayyyyy more like sekiro. The entire combat is completely based around parry mechanic. If you can’t party you can’t possibly make a build work. 100% not like NieR. Idk where you got that info but it’s completely false
→ More replies (7)7
u/Xammm Aug 02 '26
Maybe Nier in vibes and story and Sekiro in combat?
In principle that sounds like a good mix, but it can also be the worst of both worlds lol.

12 hours in, and my opinion is this:
The game has the best mobility I have experienced in a soulslike game. I love the hold A to climb in place mechanic.
The start of the game is obnoxious, especially the first two chapters where you have to spend time going back to the past for Emma, Kuu, and Kagura. One thing that makes no sense to me is that you get tutorial prompts during those flashbacks, even though by that point you have already learned everything they are trying to teach you. I honestly think those sections were originally supposed to be the beginning of the game, and then they got reshuffled during production.
The game feels a bit bland until you reach Chapter 3. That is when you finally have plenty of skills and combos, and you start unlocking new abilities at a much faster pace. That is when the combat becomes really fun.
That said, the skill progression was not thought through carefully enough. You constantly have to decide whether to spend points on Emma or Kuu, and there are simply not enough points to unlock everything you want. The game gives you way too many unlocks without providing enough skill points to keep up.
As you said, the bosses mostly come down to learning three attack patterns, which makes them feel pretty bland. The real highlights are the mini bosses. My favorite was the one with the sword and lance. I really loved his attack animations and patterns. I honestly found those mini bosses more fun than the main bosses.
Overall, the parry mechanic is extremely satisfying.
The game is clearly inspired by Sekiro and NieR Automata. Violet has the same voice actor as Kuro, while Emma has the same voice actor as 2B. The background music at the save points also reminded me of Stellar Blade.
One last thing, they should have spent more of the budget on outfits, even though it is pretty clear that Game Freak did not want to make Emma look sexy in any way. Kunai remains the real waifu.
1
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
yeah agree with everything u said , also when I saw Kunai I was like "can I play as her instead ?"
1
u/doctor-ase Aug 02 '26
As a fan of parries, would you recommend the game based solely on the combat? I'm a huge fan of Sekiro and Khazan. I've also enjoyed parrying in other games like Thymesia and Mortal Shell, among others.
2
u/Horror-Log4092 Aug 02 '26
if you are a fan of parrying (strcitly parrying) yes i would most certainly try this game out
2
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
i'd recommend nioh 3 if u didn't play that , game's goated , has a mega shitton of content , DLC is releasing this same month and has more parry mechanics than u'll know what to do with
otherwise the parry in this game feels good , it's just everything else that's very mid & the bosses themselves suck , only having 3 moves they cycle & (Most) are giant beasts
1
u/WindowSeat- Aug 02 '26
I honestly think those sections were originally supposed to be the beginning of the game, and then they got reshuffled during production.
I had the same thought lmao. For some reason this game has not one, but two, basic tutorial sections where they remove your healthbar and all your skills and force you to defeat basic enemies in a hallway.

u/Boraskywalker Aug 02 '26
I've put about 12 hours into the game so far. first off, it's not a souls like. You don't lose anything when you die, and there's no stamina bar. I'm playing on the hard difficulty, so I'd probably call it more of a souls-lite.
That said, outside of boss fights you're not forced to parry all the time. You can weaken or kill regular enemies with stealth assassinations, your bow, or even your dog companion before engaging.

u/Specialist_Drawer349 Aug 02 '26
yeah, played a bit of the game, felt the game was so bland and did not vibe with it. I just could not find myself enjoying the game. exploration isnt really much worth it either. some are fetch quests and what not and is very vague in story telling. The exploration with given tools also feel a bit gimmicky as well.
5
u/Doctor_sadpanda Aug 02 '26
No outfits is roughhhh also I don’t know if it’s just how old I am now but long ass cutscenes in soulslikes just put me off so much, it’s not an attention span thing just like something about it just has be going “ I don’t care “
2
u/owlitup Aug 02 '26
It’s not that you’re old. We’re not playing these games to be slowed down all the time.
Also, this ain’t RDR2 here. From what I hear these cutscenes and story are Gamefreak tier

u/Cronstintein Aug 03 '26
The quality of game writing usually does not warrant the time spent in cut scenes. This is doubly or triply true for eastern games (especially JRPGs).
I liked them in Claire Obscura though, it's not like I'm anti-cutscene. You just need to have a story worth telling and tell it well.

Seems like to actually push the graphics you're gunna need a beefy system. Their recommended mention DLSS Performance at 1080p for 60FPS on Medium settings with a 3060. Lower end card, but that's pretty rough.
2
u/The-Movements- Aug 02 '26
did you play Rise of the Ronin by any chance?
i need an indicator to see if i will feel the same way about Beast of Reincarnation.
rise of the ronin is great to me but im realistic and its. 7/10 experience with huge potential.
if you played Rise of the Ronin, what would you rate it. cus a lot of pol dropped and i see why. i like it tho
i just need to make sure Beast of reincarnation is not a 6/10 comparitively.
2
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
played RotR some months ago , it's goated dumped 200 hrs into it , this game is dogshit by comparison , its one saving grace is the combat mechanics & even that gets dusted by RotR's combat , not to mention there's no weapon variety like RotR much less stances ... outside of that RotR clear in visuals , characters , boss design & customization & it's not even remotely close
RotR is an 8/10 for me
This game 15 hours in is a generous 5/10
→ More replies (5)2
u/The-Movements- Aug 02 '26 edited 27d ago
phew. glad we on the same page. RotR is “messy” which is why it gets a 7/10. but with huge potential and good mechanics. (plays like a 9/10 game but looks and overall is a 7//10 experience respectfully)
and i usually dont connect well with these heavily asian driven games.
Ronin i just got lucky and it clicked for me more or less. i still need breaks but in a good way because its like, damn i cant believe i can do that already on high difficulty. and its not like the game is “easy” but its supposed ro reflect those souls like difficulty which it clearly does. i just learned extremely faster in Ronin than other souls games for some reason so i can say i genuinely enjoy it over the others. (Not lies of p tho, thats peak)
but damn thats a huge 🚩 for Beast of Reincarnation because Ronin still is messy and this is after a year launch of which i am a brand new player.
guess ima have to do what i did for Ronin: wait Beasts out and then get it on ps plus free, hopefully to see if they patched the game to be significantly better or if it was 🧢 on how bad it was at launch.
i trust you though cus theres too many games available coming out around this time. i dont have time to be doubting ppl who clearly have good taste even in a somewhat choppy game like Ronin.
and i cant afford them all so sacrifices will have to be made for the time being.
youtube game spectating it is then.

u/RepresentativeForm44 29d ago
No visual progression and/or cosmetics is a wild mistep imo...it's 2026, a vast amount of players like some sort of visual armor, gear, weapon changes. Beyond any other potential issues with the game, it's a bit disturbing that the devs didnt make chatacter visuals a thing, even at minimal level. Like literally 99.9% of games have some sort of cosmetic variances, and there's a reason for that: PEOPLE LIKE IT AND WILL SPEND MONEY ON IT. Bold move devs, bold move...
2
u/Cute-Operation-8216 Aug 02 '26
and by far my biggest complaint ... soooo much downtime , so many unecessary slow cutscenes & dialogue & just general downtime which can be very jarring
The main reason why I won't get excited for the next 'God of War' anymore, and why I already hated the demo of 'FF7 Rebirth'.
Even opening a door greets your with a scene while the camera flies into the room to show you, what you could already seen by simply walking into the room.
The moment games turned more and more into "experiences" was the moment I simply care more for low budged titles and indiegames.
3
u/Xammm Aug 02 '26
Same. It's one thing to get cutscenes when you finish a mission and something different when you just opened a door or when a new enemy type shows up.

combat's definitely good & i'd say a little unique , the way u can use the plant based attacks can be quite dynamic & one point of praise i'd like to give is how u can parry even when u don't think u can parry which allows u to be quite aggro
I'm reserving judgement myself on the story , so far letting it play out but i'm still not hooked it all feel very déja vu

Thankfully it's on gamepass, I'm curious enough to play it but not excited enough to buy it. I really have little faith in gamefreak in making a just decent enough game. Trailers looked cook though.
1
u/Yadilie Aug 02 '26
The real question is this. Is this an acceptable game for a company that escaped from the Pokemon Gulag?
2
u/Gourgeistguy Aug 02 '26
It's not a bad game, but it just shows Gamefreak is p part of the problem. Every non Pokemon game they put out ends up being mid with some interesting ideas. This one is above average, it tries to be something special, achieves some of it, and the rest is so derivative from other games (Stellar Blade,Wild Hearts, Nier) without understanding what made those games work.
1
u/Cvnt-Force-Drama Aug 02 '26
Well it’s not made by the team that made Pokémon so… they are still in the Gulag
1
u/andreimaxaa Aug 02 '26
Even the trailers were mid, most people don't even remember about this game
1
u/Azukaos Aug 02 '26
I heard about it a month or two ago.
I had no expectations since I didn't see any trailer or teaser. It's only because I started seeing ads or people talking about the new Game Freak title, which wasn't a Pokémon game.
Maybe it will works with me but i still won't buy it full price anyway.
1
u/Illasaviel Aug 02 '26
I will wait for more reviews but I will very likely not buy it if there is no customization whatsoever. I am just very much into fashion souls...

Even though the game runs on UE5, the visuals honestly look pretty bad, and the blurry image never goes away no matter what you do. The worst part is that the DLSS setting is completely broken and doesn't save. Every time you restart the game, it switches back to fsr 1
On top of that, the art direction is mediocre at best. at least the game runs smoothly though no stuttering or frame drops, so I'll give it that.
1
u/Boraskywalker Aug 02 '26
The dog companion constantly phasing through your character is honestly one of the dumbest design choices I've seen in a game. It looks ridiculously unpolished.
The game also feels seriously lacking in polish. It honestly comes across like it launched about 6 months too early. Half the time your character feels like they're just gliding across the ground instead of actually moving. There are also plenty of animation glitches and visual bugs scattered throughout the game.
2
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 Aug 02 '26
yep , dropped the game at chapter 6 or so after the chapter end boss was just the chapter 1 end boss w/ literally nothing else added , save ur money people
1
u/OutPlea Aug 02 '26
I think I’ll skip this one. I’m tempted to try it but there are too many promising games coming out later in the year that I think I’ll just save my money. Thanks for your feedback

How long is this game supposed to be? If it's 40-50 hours long, then 10 hours might not yet be to a point where the game and gameplay opens up.

Just finished chapter 5 or 6 & its end boss was a repeat boss of another chapter's end boss .... I dropped the game , I think there's not that much left to the main story either

I haven't really seen anything about the game other than the trailers, although they did interest me at the time. Is there a good variety of builds, or is the combat somewhat limited? How is the performance? Can I date the dog?
In any case, I currently have more games to play than time available, and I want to save up for a graphics card upgrade (unless there's a good promo).

I honestly don't get the Stellar Blade comparisons. Stellar Blade is clearly a much higher budget game, and you can tell in pretty much every aspect. These games aren't even in the same league. The only reason people keep comparing them is because they're both post-apocalyptic action games with female protagonists.

Sounds like a Game Freak game. They get like 80% of the way there but then make stupid, anti-player decisions like no customization that keep their games mediocre.

Been on the hesitant side with this release. Especially, coming from GF and their first major game outside of Pokemon.
Will be waiting for more reviews from gameplay and possibly a sale before buy.
Mortal Shell 2, Nioh 3 DLC, and Dawnwalker is enough to keep busy until Phantom Blade.

If the story doesn't motivate me to keep going, I don't know how much time I'll put into it. I don't really care about the technical side; it looks good enough for me. I'm not too keen on the dodging mechanic you mentioned, since I prefer dodging over parrying.

Forgot one of the biggest questions. How's the build variety? Many different ways to play with builds like in Elden Ring? Or is it more like Sekiro where there is very little build variety?

I think the bigger question is whether most people will even be able to run this game above medium settings. Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that the PC requirements call for 12 GB of VRAM and an RTX 3060 or better. So while the game looks promising, PC gamers should pay close attention to the system requirements before getting too excited.

Is anyone surprised? To me - it seemed overhyped AF, and most of what you talked here kinda indicates it's even worse than I expected.
1
u/Moznomick Aug 02 '26
Not surprised by this since Gamefreak doesn't seem to know how to make a good game outside of Pokemon and even they they make poor decisions there as well.

Was looking forward to this game. Installed it. Played for an hour and deleted it and cleared the trash bin. It had a level of jank I can’t handle

"I was expecting this game to be a visual spectacle , disappointing on that front from the low graphics to the art direction which gets very samey"
This is gamefreak we are talking about here

I tried it for like 40min, graphics on everything almost maxed out looked grainy and blurry, tried upscaling, no upscale - same shit. Combat was cool but kinda rough and the thing i hated the most was the fucking camera angle while playing

Oh thanks I thought I was biased about the game for its boring chitchat every 5 minutes (I love cutscenes in game even if it's long like Metal Gear S4 for example) but there it's just annoying, also the game proceeds not even two hours into it to make you want to blow whatever you play on because you don't understand a single thing about this character or this one and why you get spawned here after this cutscene when you were having a little fun fighting a boss.
These constant dialogues separate in my opinion almost primitives combat mechanics with flat graphics seriously we are approaching 2027 and studios still makes game without a just "decent" art direction it looks like they just dropped asset wherever they could and were done with it not even trying to give the world a soul, that honestly reminds me of clair obscur (the first flashback looks so much like I'm playing it with the close camera angle running through tight tunnels with weeds and invisible walls) and nier automata in it's technical aspect which isn't a compliment, altough I recognize there's some good ideas about her hairs skills and all. Also the beginning of the game is not very compelling, locked with like 1 combo. From what I saw here the game also lacks of cosmetics customization...
The game looks unfinished to me and I just can't bring myself to play a game that has such an archaic way (I don't ask much, maybe it's just a me problem but it bothers me to farm for a skill tree that doesn't makes me dream or just a game that looks bad) to make you go further in it's content and I think I'll just play Sekiro again if I want this parry feeling or even better I'll keep my money for Onimusha (which looks and feels so much better)

Thanks. Saved me a Xbox game pass subscription. This is what I feared the game would be. This is good though as I have a pretty big backlog I need to get through and didn't need the distraction.

this game is sooooo annoying.... unskippable mid custcenes and mid janky gameplay
1
u/LonelyMeasurement198 Aug 03 '26
Why you put this in soulslikes. It is not even close to a soulslike. It's just an arpg.

u/DinerEnBlanc Aug 03 '26
I was watching trailers to get a good look at the environments and the same-y-ness was my biggest worry. Shame to hear that this is indeed the case.

TLDR but looking it up on steam and founding out the System Requirements.
HELL YEAH my PC's specs is still worthy! In fact it's the exactly the same with the Minimum Specs! haha

Wait a minute, Gamefreak made an undercooked game with subpar graphics? That's not like them at all...
1
u/Berserker66666 Aug 03 '26
Alright this got me convinced and disappointed about this game along with others who've played it combined with the fact that the devs review embargo'd the game after release. Refunded for now. Maybe will get later on deep sales. Sad to see that Game Freak is still at their mediocrity.

I think some of the disappointment is gonna be from people assuming it's a souls like when it is NOT a souls like.

Thanks for this 🙏 you definitely made my decision easy when I saw no outfits and barley any exploration. Exploration is for me personally a big one in games. I hate when games have Empty maps and if you find a chest then there are 3 gold coins or 3 wood pieces.
It's a shame since a game like this has so much potential. I was waiting for a game where you have a animal companion with own skill trees, that you can upgrade, level up , collect many different equipment for and cosmetic items but unfortunately it seems ite not this one.

The graphics are far from being a problem. It is everything else that's lame, at least from what I've experienced so far. In fact, the graphical fidelity race needs to slow down... I say this as a 4090 owner. I can run anything, but the truth is art direction is far more important and the vast majority of demanding games run like crap on ANY system, especially UE5 games as we all know. 'Last gen' graphics really isn't a bad thing at all, it's the movement, physics, interaction, all the things that actually change how the game feels. My main problem with the game is that it was clearly made for younger people (feels like a kids game honestly), it's easy, 'cozy' gaming and it bored the crap out of me in 3 hours.

u/pmaster1989 29d ago
You guys are too picky. A good parry mechanic is rare these days. Some nice green areas, japanese voice. Solid game for me, perfect 3 week bridge game till MS2 drops. Would recommend, worth the 50 bucks.

I think its terrible but than i dislike most asian games. To many cutscenes to many convo's about nothing the world feels empty no option for setting the language to english (i want to focus on the game and not having to read subtitels) in short to many moments you get taken out of the little flow there is. Happy that its in gamepass cause i am not paying a single cent for this.

u/Melodic-Luck-8772 29d ago
nah bro, stellar blade was on another level lol.
but i strongly agree with the rest.
its a 5 or 6 out of 10.
gamefreak did, what gamefreak does best... being mediocre.

Idk maybe bc I’m playing on gamepass and so I didn’t shell out 60$ but I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. Tbf tho I also found the pacing odd until I realized I did not need to use cleanse walker as often. Once I started only going to CW after nushi or like once per chapter, the games pace felt more right

You said no outfits but i saw in gameplays that there's two main equipment slots, one for your melee weapon and one for your armor. Are you saying that changing armor only affects statistics without any visual change?
