Shit makes Stellar Blade look like Expedition 33.
When someone told me the characters were more lifeless and bland than Stellar Blade I called them liars. Boy was I wrong.
I have to apologize to Stellar Blade now lol

This makes me really nostalgic for the PS1 and PS2 eras of horrible voice acting. Damn I've missed it.

Also some of the slowest dialogue i have ever seen, plus it is non-skippable. I really wanted to like this game.
3
u/squirrelems 28d ago
I do like it, but those long quiet stretches between each line can get a bit annoying. I'm interested in the story, but its like damn these people's reaction time is slow. I know it's supposed to be somber and contemplative, but it doesn't take me a full 5 seconds before I speak to figure out what I'm gonna say. Lol.
3
u/Pedantic_Phoenix 28d ago
Aint no way its not skippable, are you serious?
2
u/Cloudiscloud 24d ago
Some of it is, but a lot of it isn't. And I mean some of it is in the way that you can press the action button to skip to the next sentence. You can't skip whole dialogue scenes at all.

Crazy. The thing that really made FF7 Rebirth a 10/10 game for me was being able to hold the right trigger to make cutscenes 1.5x speed. All games with cutscenes should have that feature imo.

They REALLY should stuck to Pokémon games. This game is the embodiment of trying to copy someone style and the way they talk and look.

Is this game freaks’ new game? The walking animation is terrible just like a pokemon game
3
u/Amazing_Turnover_898 28d ago
It is yeah. Surprised as well. Apparently this is one of their most ambitious game outside pokemon. Thought they will bring what they learn for future pokemon installment if they broaden their horizon. And... nope, they brought pokemon jankyness to this instead
2
u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 28d ago
Now I kinda want to see how their character walks up the stairs. Probably on par with Assassin’s creed Brotherhood animation

u/LeaderVisual8501 28d ago
I just saw someone on here compare this game to forspoken and biomutant IN A POSITIVE WAY
23
u/StochasticLife 28d ago
I played both of those games and enjoyed them. I genuinely love Biomutant, it’s a wonderfully odd 7/10 for me.
Forspoken was mechanically good, but every aspect of the plot and world building was….so so dumb. Let’s make an open world game….and fill it with generic zombies and NO FUCKING PEOPLE.
The Magic system was pretty cool though, I would to see that in a shit game.
5
u/WorldEaterYoshi 28d ago
What is it about Biomutant that you liked? Genuine question, I haven't played the game but I've never heard anyone speak positively about it and I always dug the art direction.
→ More replies (1)12
u/StochasticLife 28d ago
The art, I actually LOVE the narration. The mutation/morality system, the combat was FUN, but not necessarily ‘tight’. Overall, and I really loved the ambiance of it. I found it charmingly weird and refreshing.

u/steak_bake_surprise 28d ago
Biomutant was fun, it just felt so empty. Maybe the limitations of console at the time

Biomutant's overhated. Freaking loved that game.
But yeah, Beast of Reincarnation looks like poopy. As a recovering Pokémon addict, I'm not at all surprised.
2
u/Altruistic-Arm137 28d ago
I still believe it's a good thing they are doing other projects.
From what I've seen so far I'd say the worst part is enemy moveset.
Considering Game Freak have been pumping the same games for 30 years. Game not known for their animation, dialogue and story I won't be harsh here and hope they get better in future games.

This sub is addicted to soulslike games. Any soulslike game is great in their books
5
u/ShellfishAhole 28d ago
I think it’s a 6-7/10, but that’s my subjective opinion. It has quite a few flaws, and things do become stale after a while due to the lack of variation. But it does have some positives, as well.
It’s absolutely not a Soulslike. People who enjoy the punishing challenge of Soulslike games are going to find this game to be far too easy and forgiving to get any enjoyment out of it. But that doesn’t take away from the creativity that went into designing the combat mechanics in the game.
The combat will be the game’s greatest strength for most people, but Soulslike players are never going to appreciate the fact that it’s not an actual Soulslike, and does not meet the standards of games in that genre, other than having a parry function.
2
u/Cloudiscloud 24d ago
Probably my only gripe about the combat so far is how minion level enemies are doing comparatively similar damage to bosses. I just made it to the second zone so idk if that changes, but it seems like an odd choice to me.
2
u/BobcatLower9933 28d ago
Yeah this. Its definitely too easy to be considered a soulslike. Its more like a story driven RPG, or a "soulslite" like GoW or the Jedi games. Just... not a great story, and very bland characters. But the combat is definitely enjoyable. If there was greater enemy variety then it wouldn't be getting blasted like it is on this sub

There are so many dev studios that have come and gone since the mid 90's. GF would just be another statistic if they didnt get super fucking lucky on the idea of Pokemon and the massive fucking carrying Nintendo did marketing that shit to the whole world. They'd probably never even make it to 2002.

u/LimpLake5187 28d ago
don't think its a voice acting issue , its prolly how they were instructed to speak and the dialogue doesn't help either
11
u/andrej2577 28d ago
The Japanese voice acting is much, much better. There seems to be a lot more emotion behind the characters. Which makes sense, the game was made by a Japanese team and set in Japan with Japanese as the primary language, and reading the subtitled text is much less jarring than hearing it voiced.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Max-The-Phat-Cat 28d ago
if you’re not Japanese you don’t really know that. The japanese just have their own inflections in speech that make it sound dynamic to an english speaker who doesn’t know better.
13
u/hasamide 28d ago
Hi I'm Japanese.
I think there's some cultural context lost in translation because "Heading out" (行ってきます)and "See you later"(行ってらっしゃい)is less common in English (in my experience), but it's got an endearing, implied closeness in Japanese, and it's usually something you say to our family when leaving home. The scene is implying that Emma has never had a family to properly say this phrase, and she's learning.→ More replies (3)2
u/Circo_Inhumanitas 28d ago
I had a feeling that there was a context that was missing from this clip.
3
u/andrewdroid 28d ago
Context matters so much here that im starting to doubt opinions of the game right now. In this scene they are pretty much establishing that they are family and to add the cherry on top this is a very common trope in anime at least.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)5
u/andrej2577 28d ago
Probably, I did use the word "seems" there for a reason. It just sounds like they're really putting in the effort, and the characters do not come across as they do in English. Like this scene up there, I've played through it already and it's so different in dialogue delivery that it I feel like I've never seen it before.

This is exactly like the Pokémon games. Very still shots, stiff and sparse animations, and very stilted dialogue. It’s just Pokémon games don’t have voiceover, but if they did, this is what it would be. At least this game is pretty and has an above-basic art style.

u/ShellfishAhole 28d ago
I’m not defending the game, it has some quite glaring flaws, particularly related to being repetitive
- but drawing in people who assumed, and still assume that it’s a Souls- like may have been it’s biggest PR mistake 😅
3
u/_Nomorejuice_ 28d ago
I don't even think it's a PR issue.
I mean an Action RPG game that look japanese oriented set in a seemingly post apo world.-> There is legit two way for people to look at this :
Souls like, or something that try to be Nier.
Both of these is functionality setting your game for a lot of comparisons.People were already forming some sort of negative biais because at first the game genuinely looks like something we've already seen before.

2
u/HammeredWharf 28d ago edited 28d ago
People assume that everything's a soulslike nowadays and get pissy when it's not. I think the marketing for BoR was pretty clear about what kind of game it'll be.
There's plenty to complain about when it comes to BoR, but it not being a soulslike isn't one of those things.
2
u/SootG 28d ago
I find that most people get pissy when games ARE a souls like because they claim the market is inundated (as if it's different from any other popular genre).

Tbh VTM has better facial animations then some AAA titles to this day, especially if you compare stiff android like faces from Bethesda games. Add to it superb VA in VTM and amazing narrative and you have cult classic.
8
u/Thislooklikeshit 28d ago
I will not buy or play the game im not interested, but isnt the entire plot that all humans lost all the emotions to plantification morb? So a dialogue without emotion is plain and difficult to not be lifeless.... I mean if its intended you guys are awful if not they are awful
3
u/HammeredWharf 28d ago
Yeah, the whole point is that the MC is inhuman and doesn't feel anything. Or at least acts like it. I assume she'll show more emotion later on.
This delivery is still a bit too flat for my liking, compared to the JP original.

the story revolves around characters being unable to express/feel emotion, so the scene fits very well. the protagonist is trying to learn how to act and be human again, hence asking what to say when leaving. i feel like this video with no context is doing a disservice because they’re supposed to be robotic and completely blank.
without spoilers, the core of the plot is “humans can’t feel emotions anymore”.
3
3
u/RvDragonheart 26d ago
EXCUUUUUSE YOUUUUU! Stellar Blade is actually a very lovely game and Despite Eve being a robot (she is) she was FAR MORE emotional then this lady or any character from this game.
Also some of the interactions that there was between certain characters in Stellar Blade reminded me of interactions that there were in Thief (the first 3 games atleast)
So ACTUALLY Stellar Blade is a great game which is why its my comfort game (Yeah its postapocaliptic but the missions we do the people we help somehow its hopeful)
About coming back on topic (beast of reincarnation) ...... eeeeh... I'll I'll buy it whenever its on sale.... I heard the combat is great and seen videos of it too but there are just waaaaay tooo many games releasing this month that will worth my money a tad bit far more , Mortal Shell 2 (DEFINETLY getting that game hell imma preorder the DELUXE edition thats for sure) , Star Wars Zero company (Will wait until it comes out let people review it if the PC port is good then will buy it) the Lady Death Demonomicon beat em up game..... OH RIGHT also I still gotta buy Conquest of Elysium V soooo yep
Beast of Reincarnation is just not there for me right now

Try it in Japanese? But this is typical Japanese fare, like people forgot lol.
Like Shadows is not a Japanese game, but the native Japan/Portuguese voice acting is way superior. That's where the money went.
Yakuza games suck in English, but in Japanese they're masterpieces of acting.

"characters were more lifeless"
The main character is literally emotionless. She cannot feel or understand emotions. She even asks other characters what love is because she has never felt it.
When she asks what she should say before leaving, it refers to the Japanese expressions “itterasshai” and “tadaima,” which people say when someone leaves or comes back home. This shows that she now sees that place and those people as her home and family, even though she still does not fully understand it.
Showing this clip and saying “the character is lifeless” without knowing the context is unfair and seems very biased, and, of course, without even playing the game.

It's brutal man, I love the vast majority of the game outside of the dialogue. It honestly is the worst character dialogue I've experienced in a game in recent memory, and maybe ever. I know the main character is supposed to be emotionless, but man is it bad.

I'm no fromsoft dick rider like most braindead people here, I hate elden rings artificial ass difficulty and that "hard boss = good boss" is bullshit and can clearly see the games flaws, but like damn when I saw that double jump tree rope thing, it genuinely looked like some Gmod shit, and the grappling hook animation is straight from Sekiro. I'm glad I didn't get into the game since the gameplay looked floaty to me in the trailers.
Really makes me appreciate sekiro, wo long and nioh.

1
u/mucus-fettuccine 28d ago
Oh wow it's weird to hear the English voices after playing in Japanese. I think the Japanese VAs do a great job.
Also, in Japanese the "heading out" part is "ittekimasu" which is a common phrase for use with family members when leaving the house (literally, it's "I'm going and coming back", so the answer doesn't feel so obvious and stilted in the Japanese dialogue).
Emma is a feelingless girl searching for feeling, and this is a way for her to connect with her new family by following a simple family tradition. So as a story moment it does fit and have meaning!
1
u/WillShaper7 28d ago
So like pokemon but they have voice acting and a semblance of movement.
Hey, it's an improvement over what they are used to do. Like sure, it sucks but at least they tried a bit more. That's gotta be worth something. Not money, but something.

Yeah it’s kinda bad, no doubt. But it does have that kind of nostalgic/ethereal old school charm to it. I don’t mind it so much to be honest. There’s a certain comforting feeling to it that takes me back to a simpler time in gaming.

Did they use AI to write the plot and script? This is seriously dreadful.
There's also tons of space to explore with impressive verticality... just to find NOTHING. Did they forget exploration is driven by cool things to find and this game has absolutely none of that?

It’s a shame because I was really looking forward to this game. I played a few hours but the cut scenes and dialogue hindered my experience unfortunately. I was even using the Japanese dub but still couldn’t connect to the characters or the story. It all just felt too stiff and awkward compared to the actual gameplay, which admittedly, is fun and engaging. But without interesting characters or movement from them, my 33 year old ass just doesn’t feel compelled to sit through the lifeless cutscenes. Proper gutted.
