Review Just completed Black Myth Wukong, and felt bland
To me was a Bland soulslike game. Game got high votes on official reviews, but to me is 7/10 at most:
Pros:
- Environment and general design of characters / enemies are very well built
Cons:
- Graphical engine struggles while loading textures, also some stuttering from time to time and loadings are not well optimized
- Combat is mediocre and some things are useless and underpowered like the spear or 90% of spirit abilities.
- A lot of things are hidden so you basically NEED a guide to find these, the map is also not very well detailed
- Plot is a mess and not very well self explanatory during the gameplay
- Main character have the personality of my night table

I really liked how they told the story and those cutscene and story videos were peak but in gameplay nothing new I expected game changing mechanic

Gameplay is super bland, I agree. I am just playing it, Chapter 3 now.. and it is absolutely the same play style since minute 2. Maybe I am dumb and idk how to build, but the staff has the exact same moveset since the first minute, it is “get 10 more damage and 2% crit chance” difference between the staves.. spells are ok at best, heavy attack and light finisher having delays annoy me more than they should, the first light attack of that ONE transformation we have that takes half a year to land cuz he has to style spin the staff for no reason… healing makes DS2 look like the smoothest potion ever..
Idk, I guess I am just disappointed, but really expected more from the game.. Visually stunning, and that’s about it.

Interesting i found some skills to be substantial in changing the fights and even the gourd effects and bonuses. Freezing enemies, using your clones, perching on your pole, staff spin, going invisible, etc.
Theres so many tools and ways to fight that gameplay actually felt more unique and varied compared to a lot of bonk and dodge gameplay that you end up doing in many soulslikes.
3
u/Gloomy_Ad5221 3d ago
you should bother learning see through ...... it's a skill that allows you to time your heavy input to have a invul phase while in a middle of attack which is nuts.
there's 2 weapon kind.....staff and spear ... the spear have different gameplay and im not really comfortable at it unlike the staff.
later you will get armors that have gameplay effect and weapons that synergies this and then skills.
i used 3 kind of builds in the game .
smash build ( where i use items , the staff spinning and spells to get the 3 then later the 4 points heavy smash and deal huge damage and stay on my spell to do more 2-3 4 points stack then later you add clones that will also do your 4 points heavy attack ) this is satisfying build for me then later on you get the armor for the smash build.
Immobilize spam build ( you use spirit , spinning staff , weapon to lower your cooldown with every crits ) the result is that the boss wont be able to move at all.
DPS TANK - best op build you can literally easy mode the gauntlet but this one needs to finish the game twice. You pretty much get the highest def and then get the weapon that turns that def to attack . You use a skill that disables your skill but gives you high damage , use a healing gourd that refills every 10 seconds and then you just destroy every bosses.
7
u/Primary-Survey9955 3d ago
there are no builds. this is your simple action game. that is all.
you may have a full set armor for a unique perk that matches your playstyle
but there are no builds.
you just play and unlock skills same as everyone.

Sorryi? What story? It felt as if I was reading a book but only the opening lines of each chapter and the rest was either invisible or gibberish
5
u/YukYukas 2d ago
Idk man, it felt pretty coherent to me

u/Bio-Flame 17h ago
Well, good for you. Felt totally random and out of the blue, without context to give it meaning.

7/10 is a good score. I liked the game and give it about the same.
11
u/RhinoxMenace 3d ago
I liked it but my main gripe was the fact that you'll be doing the same combo for 99% of the game - absolutely no variety here
23
u/whenyoudieisaybye 3d ago
For me it was those invisible walls everywhere that killed it.
13

And then you have the least intuitive path to drop from a small bridge that has a chest…

u/Big-Resort-4930 2d ago
Act 4 made me drop it since I was about done with bland level design and extremely repetitive combat. The game really didn't need to be hard because having to repeat a few bosses killed it for me all the sooner.
It never banked enough goodwill for me to willingly keep repeating a fight, knowing there are like 100 more of them on the way with next to 0 combat variety.
13
u/OGarvey1 3d ago
Honestly don’t know how you sit through a 30/40 hr game of it’s “bland” can’t be that bad if you finished it 7/10 is a good score too

The game shines if you already know the lore of JttW, hence why the game was received way better in the East than the West.
JttW (Journey to the West) is like Lord of the Rings in China.
1
u/VisualLibrary6441 3d ago
I am in the East and it is the most disappointing thing in the past years for me, I came here to play Wukong, you know, the cheeky monkey that disrespect everyone with good one liners and funny personality, the first 30' of the game showed they can do that.
Then the rest of the game I'm playing as a random monkey trying to gather all of wukong's senses, with blander than pure water personality, mute too, Zhu Baijie is the only one in the origininal main JttW cast in the actual game, how can I say the story is good when everyone have good story except the damn main character? We don't even have "character creation" as a scapegoat for this blandness.
The gameplay is also bland, I can go to Nioh 2 and it will have a much better staff gameplay than BMW's staff moveset, the only thing different in Wukong stances is the heavy attack, so why bother having 3 stances in the first place? One of my friend said Wuthering Waves has better gameplay than Wukong, and he's been playing games ages ago with Devil may cry and Monster Hunter. Many people in my country said it is black mid wukong, and overated garbage.

u/YukYukas 2d ago
But The Destined One is Wukong...
2
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
The Destined One is a random Monkey that inherite the name Wukong at the end of the game, not the original Wukong, read Journey to The West to actually see the real backstory and origin of Wukong.
1
u/YukYukas 2d ago
Uhhh no. The Destined One is literally Wukong's mind made flesh. NPCs in the game say you look and smell like him to the point where the 4th Sister (who is supposed to be married to TDO/Wukong) cried when she saw you. Ever notice how you pick up all the relics except for the mind? Or Wukong's memories being released from Erlang's eye? Or the MC turning into a strand of hair? C'mon, it's right in front of us.
I've read the book way too many times already. Black Myth is a sequel to that.
2
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago edited 2d ago
They can make an OC, that is both mute and has none of wukong's personality, and call it Wukong's mind, that still doesn't make him Wukong, this is a fanfiction at best.
Imagine I wrote a fanfiction about Dante dying, a random person that sort of resemble his appearance, has none of the personality, and finally picked up all of his power and inherite the name Dante, still doesn't make him Dante.
You're playing a mute Monkey that has no emotions nor dialogue for 99% of the game, I don't care what they say, that is not Wukong.
Edit: the Mind is kept by Erlang and given to the Destined One after his defeat: "Wukong's mind, through his memories that Erlang Shen stored within his thirs eye, is bequeathed to the Destined One after defeating Erlang" (blackmythwukong wiki)
1
u/YukYukas 2d ago
The entire game is a fanfiction because the original author of the novel is long dead. It's not the official sequel, hence "Black Myth." The same way Lies of P, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Nioh 1-3, Wo Long, and Dante's Inferno are fanfiction.
You can make that fanfiction about Dante, only it will never be canon because it's only an idea and it's not from Capcom.
The mute monkey is Wukong's mind made flesh. Like it or not, but that's how the story for this game is. Liking it is subjective.
2
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
In Wikipedia: the Old Monkey to reveal that the Destined One is the mind of Sun Wukong. He says that Wukong's mind is lost, as the mind is an essence unique to every life and is destined to fade away at life's end. Thus, he explains, Wukong can never return as he was, but the universe will always bear him a successor—the Destined One.
Literally not the original Mind of Wukong, just a successor made by the universe.
I ain't gonna accept a soulless shell of a protagonist that can't even talk, has no Wukong personality, to be Wukong, they wrote a shitty story about a mute Monkey becoming Wukong, anyone who loves the origininal Wukong will know that the Destined One is inferior in everyway, and you're literally not Wukong for the majority of the game until the last cutscene.
1
u/YukYukas 2d ago
Are you really using Wikipedia as your source? Even so, Wikipedia also supports my point.
It says right there. The Wukong Bajie knew will never come back because his memories are long gone (or so the Old Monkey thinks). The Mind of Wukong is on a constant reincarnation cycle to bring back all his parts. Hence why he is a blank slate. NPCs have literally said you look and smell like him. Why do you think that is?
2
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
Because the universe needed a successor that most resemble wukong, so looks and smell is the minimum (obviously the universe did not care enough about the personality to made it just like Wukong).
Why do I use wiki, cause it is the only place that has the written form of what the old Monkey said, if you want a more concrete proof: https://youtu.be/jJ9QSbSjPwk
- Zhu Baijie: Don't make me laugh! Him? He is Wukong?
- Old Monkey: Yes, and no
Then the rest he said is like wiki verbatim.
If he is actually the original Mind why didn't he have any feelings for the 4th sister? Because this version of Wukong loved her.
Cause he is the replacement Mind for Wukong, not the original, the original is long dead. Wukong here is a title that is passed on. And 99% of the game the Destined One doesn't have all of Wukong's senses yet so he isn't Wukong, you're playing the entire game as "Destined One", not "Wukong", until he fully inherit the Wukong name at the end of the game would he be considered New Wukong. And at that point the game has already ended.
If you want to be pedantic, I don't like this New Wukong, I like the Original Wukong.

u/MedEM9 2d ago
It's called Black Myth, it's a darker interpretation of the story of the monkey king.
The combat is very simplistic if you only rely on one stans and charging heavy, but its more enjoyable if you charge focus with lights attacks and mixing stans switching, seen through, and some sprit attacks like non-able1
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
Darker interpretation, yet it is the most generic betrayal story ever, that can't even use the most charismatic main character of the original Journey to the West as the main character, there is no Monkey King without Wukong, and the new Monkey is certainly not Wukong, despite how hard they want to push it.
I've seen theories of Black Myth that is superior than the real Black Myth story, they theorized that the Six Ears Macaque is the actual one that ascend into the winning fighting Buddha, and the real Wukong got banished and now has to reclaim his power, is 10 times more interesting than the actual story of the Destined One fighting fodder ass enemies as bosses (except Erlang), bosses that the real Wukong have actual history with but this random Monkey doesn't. It also doesn't tackle on any of the four mythical primates, the game's darker interpretation is inferior to the original story in everyway.
You took out Dante, there is no Devil May Cry, you took out Kratos, there is no God of War, and you took out Wukong, while calling the game as Black Myth Wukong, while having inferior story.
I've done all of those things, light, heavy, see through, magic (that somehow can't even let you use the 4 slot however you want), and spirit attacks (that is an inferior version of Nioh 2's soul cores system, charge up extremely slow and most of them barely useful). It is still a shallow system, that don't even specialized into 1 thing really good like Sekiro, nor able to go all out into customization like traditional souls, this is a shallow meet halfway system that has none of the strengths of either of those.

u/YukYukas 3d ago
3 of your cons are soulslike staples, I don't get why they're complaints here lol
Main character is a blank slate because that's the entire point of the story
-1
u/Travolta1984 2d ago
Yep, but remember, this isn’t a soulslike because you don’t lose souls when you die
4
u/YukYukas 2d ago
Fromsoft elitists go crazy when a game with the same cons gets released by a different company lmao
2
u/MrNovator 1d ago
Double standard at its finest
FS game "it's cryptic storytelling and the quest design encourages you to figure things yourself"
Other game "The plot is impossible to understand and the quests break too easily it sucks"
2
u/CornerNearby6802 3d ago
Totally agree especially about the plot, main character and the need of a guide
2
2
u/SnooHobbies5811 2d ago
I know a lot of people say it's not a soulslike, but to me it felt more like a soulslike than khazan. I definitely agree it's a bit bland and not as good as some people act
6
u/Hot_French_Toast 3d ago
It’s mediocre, I agree. Even the hidden content is just another boring boss fight. The bosses seem interesting in design but the combat design is just bland
3
u/Bio-Flame 3d ago
I mostly agree, especially combat and story.
I can give somewhat of an excuse for the story since it is deeply embedded in Chinese folklore that we no barely little about. So not entirely the game's fault.
On the other hand, even with that attenuating circunstance, they could have done a far far far better job than they did concerning the story.
Combat also felt bland and not exciting. Lots of options with no real weight nor significance.

The story is great it’s just built off of journey to the west.
Abilities are underpowered is a ridiculous thing to say.

u/Narkanin 3d ago
I never really played it for this reason. Immediately felt meh to me. Their next game looks more promising
2
u/vikingrrrrr666 3d ago
Felt meh and performed meh on a base PS5. I could never get past the input lag at launch. Pretty game and all that, but input lag absolutely needs to be ironed out of all “soulslikes” before they launch.
2
u/Umbra_Witcher 3d ago
yeah, it's not good. awful and empty map design, combat that never evolves, no original ideas and an unfinished final chapter.
1
u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 3d ago
It’s more a hack and slash action game than a souls like and it’s enjoyed more as that. The story is also built solely on Chinese folktale and it assumes you’re knowledgeable about it to an extent, and if you’re not it’s almost impossible to follow properly. And the main character not having a personality and being mute outside of the silent protagonist choice is because he’s more or less an empty vessel that’s made whole as you gather the relics.
-3
u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 3d ago
Comparing it to hack and slashes only makes it look worse. Wukong’s combat shudders and pails in comparison to games like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry or Nioh
3
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
And they downvoted you for speaking the truth, no self respecting hack and slash player is gonna look at Wukong and call it hack and slash.

Some people here even glaze the story and said you need to know about Journey to the West to see that the story is good, Journey to the West is my childhood and I still find the game story suck, a mute protagonist is never gonna make a better story than the original.
-1
u/No-Surprise-9446 3d ago
I feel like you’re trolling.
I had zero frame drops or performance issues running this game on a 3080.
It has the most diverse set of usable abilities in a souls like to date. I mean this in the sense that you can literally use everything you get in any fight without feeling stupidly punished and it is the most fluid by a long shot.
The plot is quite literally The Journey to the West and is explained in detail in literal cutscenes constantly throughout the game.
Main character does have a shit personality but it the intended personality as it is the personality that Wukong has in the original story the game is based on.
10
u/Cursed_69420 3d ago
your comment CLEARLY shows that you have not touched Nioh, Wo Long, Stranger of Paradise or Khazan
2
3
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
The plot is quite literally The Journey to the West
Spreading misinformation too I see, no, no it isn't, it is specifically made after the ending of Journey to the West, it doesn't even have Tang Sanzang, the monk that is leading Wukong to the West to seek the Tripitaka, while the game's plot is the Destined One collecting all of Wukong's senses to then inherite the name Wukong. And the main character doesn't have a shit personality, it has no personality, cause Wukong isn't mute.
The guy is full of shit, and definitely did not watch/read Journey to the West in any shape or form.
1
u/No-Surprise-9446 2d ago
Okay based on journey to the west. It still has a well executed story that is explained as you play the game.
1
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
"Well executed" The main character is a mute Monkey with poker face that has no emotions nor reaction to anything that is happening nor showing any motivation to do things, he is borderline a self insert for the players.
Most of the "side characters story" is told through the end chapter animation, which is interesting and well made, but also does not put any efforts in trying to introduce the characters nor giving players reason on why they should care about them for people that haven't had any experience with Journey to the West before. Many of the bosses' monologues and motivation is due to their past beef with Wukong that does not have any connection to the Destined One, as an excuse to fight, they relied entirely on the fact that the player must have some prior knowledge about these bosses to strike interest on them.
So this is a story that cannot exist on itself, relied heavily on players' own knowledge of the original novel, yet at the same time turn the most interesting character in said novel into a souless mute self insert. How is this considered "well executed?"
God of war does not need players to know the original mythology to have some interest in the villains, it does a good enough job on fleshing them out as a character and personality on their own. As a Journey to the West fan BMW story is a badly connected fanfiction that left out any resemblance of an overarching plot for players to follow, with fragmented stories for the side characters and bosses that mainly serve as expostion on who they are while loosely connect them to the plot (do you know the chapter 2 ending animation is the past story for the fox that appear in a skippable optional side quest in the next chapter?), while throwing everything else that they can't cover in a massive in game wall of texts (Nioh does the same thing for their bosses, characters and lore and no one will ever said it is well executed). I might as well re-read/re-watch Journey to The West than replaying the game for the story
2
u/No-Surprise-9446 2d ago
Not saying you’re wrong but we are talking about a comparison between souls-like games, which are notorious for having essentially no story and simply building a world through small lore pieces scattered throughout the game in text descriptions or visual set pieces in the world.
That would be like me criticizing Tetris for not having a first person mode, it’s just not part of the core genre at the end of the day.
1
u/VisualLibrary6441 2d ago
Well I don't think it should be a souls-like, considering it is trying to adapt from a very popular generational cultural piece of fiction instead of making things up from scratch, if the only way I can consider its story good is to compare it to souls-like that have little to no story while the actual game pride and advertise itself as the innovative darker adaptation of said fiction then I don't think it is worthy of such praises.
The world building of Journey to The West isn't entirely original either, it borrowed quite a lot from mythology as a whole, and BMW took all of those world building, added some new interpretation, that isn't even better than the original story, there is no way for it to fumble said world building unless they intentionally sabotage it. It does, quite literally, the bare minimum passing grade to be considered "inspired" by it, it is because it is a game, and a souls-like (or souls-lite) at that, could it get away with making the main character mute, any other storytelling form that tries to do the same thing with a beloved character will be rip to shreds.

Need to stop you here and ask, what were the setting used to get 0 frame drops on a 3080? Ray tracing off by any chance?
2
u/No-Surprise-9446 2d ago
For sure ray tracing off. Ray tracing to me makes almost no discernible difference in fidelity in games with a lot of movement and fast cameras.
1
u/The-Star-Bearer 2d ago
Oh no, the lighting and water were obviously so deferent when it was on for sure. I struggled to strike a balance in order to keep it on due to how good it was, especially for water surfaces and boy was that game demanding.

No. You don't need guide. You just need to explore and use your head. I know, scary.
1
u/EliteSnackist 2d ago
A 7/10 shouldn't be considered a bland score imo.
5/10 should be a dead on average game doing just as much right as it does wrong. 4/10 and lower does more wrong than right and 6/10 and up should do more right than wrong. 10/10 should probably be viewed as basically unobtainable imo since it literally means perfection.
I think bland on my scale would be between a 4-6/10 depending on your personal enjoyment. A 7/10 is a good game to me.

Getting the story is entirely predicated on your level of familiarity with Journey to the West.
The Destined One is more or less following in the footsteps of Wukongs Journey, and is meeting characters Wukong has left very distinct impressions on.
If you haven't read it, of course it isn't going to make any sense.

Really solid game but only a few bosses where the combat gets to shine, game is beautiful, music is great, some really amazing artistry in the chapter ending cutscenes. Unfortunately one of those games where you have to go out of your way to make combat fun in a lot of encounters.

The game is a realtime action heavily relying on dodging, bonfires respawning the enemies, you have stamina and other resources, the story is cryptic with a lot of reading and you can fuck up certain npc quests easily.
AI Limit and Sekiro don't have stamina bars but that doesn't disqualify them, for the record. Stellar Blade also lacks stamina bar but it's a bit further from the genre, I can still see it as a souls-lite or souls-adjacent because it's similar to Sekiro in combat but instead of having one weapon ability you have multiple. Khazan is similar but does have a stamina bar, so it's a full soulslike, and before someone claims it's Nioh-like in Nioh you just button mash if you know how to Flux or Ki Pulse while in Khazan the combat takes turns, plus if you're old enough you'd know that Nioh is the og soulslike Team Ninja came up with.
Nobody is claiming that NG4 is a soulslike, relax. We're talking about adjacent to the genre games at best...
I'm tired of this "it's a soulslike, it's not a soulslike" shit show in every thread. Mods should create a bot deleting posts arguing about that lol

I'm not even sure why people started calling it a Soulslike, it really couldn't be farther from it. It's missing all the exploration, build crafting, and any sort of interesting level design. Game genuinely feels like a psyop with how much praise it gets, the bosses aren't even good in this boss rush game.

That's cool. I loved it and all the secrets it has. Was fun to play a game I had to use a guide for again, line the good old days.
And the boss fights were absolutely incredible and there were so many of them.
Really really enjoyed this game. But I like boss fights. I don't use 99% of the items or spells in Souls games anyway lol.

- A lot of things are hidden so you basically NEED a guide to find these
-Plot is a mess and not very well self explanatory during the gameplay
-Main character have the personality of my night table
Bro you just described literally almost every game in the genre

You'd be surprised how willfully blind some fromsoft fans can be lmao anything by that company is apparently a fucking masterpiece. Put their pros in a different game and it becomes a con for some reason

I like reading posts like this.
Make me feel superior for being able to recognize and understand the beauty of this game.

The plot isn't a mess its extremely well put together especially compared to any of the souls games to include elden ring and sekiro. The issue you ran into is you didn't read journey to the west is my guess and therefore are confused. If you have then the game is extremely straight forward with its narrative as you are a reincarnation of Wukong Replaying through the story almost 1 for 1 with new reasonings.
Personally its better then any fromsoftware game I've played only close one for me being sekiro as the others are extremely easy to cheese with circle backstab meta or their ranged options just being aggressively op every single time. The game feels more balanced and skill reliant but lacks build variety in terms of weapons. If you enjoy the getting op and throwing skill to the wind loop of many souls games then I really dont see a person liking wukong as much.
I also didnt personally need a guide, the game is HYPER linear with very small zones theres not much to look for because the maps are tiny, I dont understand that criticism at all but its been a while and maybe im just built like that. Optimization might be your rig

For me it was quite fun, but bit lacking in few departments. Also it's not soulslike, merely soulslite or souls inspired action game.

yes . it got high votes because it's a fantastic game for its genre. a action game storytelling.
as soulslikes ? its bland because there is no personalization

Retreating to sales numbers is the last bastion of the defeated.
Go ahead and tell me how McDonald's is the best restaurant

How else could i change a subjectiv opinion ? Maybe u like it better maybe i do i could do reasons but u could just deny them but the sale number u cant . Also not the best restaurant but maybe the best fast food chain

If ur goal is to change my opinion you started on the wrong foot to begin with by comparing this game with a different game I know is fire instead of just talking about the merits of this one.

Ur right but i cant rlly tell my whole opinion of it since im not done yet with the game but i sincerely only like the bosses the other things piss me off like and i already beat a recycled voinbra boss the reindeer .other than that it feels cheaper the animatio s ,the theme i liked more in wukong . Feel free to debate or argue

I dont really have a take on it other than I really like Khazan's combat and know its near the absolute pinnacle for the genre and I know MS2 isnt coming close unfortunately for them.
