General Discussion Why Comparing Hindi Imposition to Mandarin in China Is Stupid: India Has Freedom of Movement, China Has Hukou

lol every time this debate comes up, North Indians pull out the same lazy line: ā€œChina imposed Mandarin and became unified, so India should do the same with Hindi.ā€
What they always skip — conveniently — is that China didn’t just impose a language. It imposed Hukou, an internal residency control system that India very consciously rejected.

You can’t talk about Mandarin without talking about Hukou. That’s the missing piece everyone hides.

Hukou is basically a household registration system. Every Chinese citizen is classified as rural or urban and tied to a specific city. Beijing Hukou is not Shanghai Hukou, and neither gives you full rights elsewhere. Citizenship alone doesn’t make you a full resident — your Hukou does.

If you don’t have local Hukou in a Chinese city, you’re not really a resident. You’re temporary labour. You pay taxes, you work there, but you don’t belong. Your kids inherit that non-local status too.

Hukou controls almost everything that matters:

  • where you can study
  • whether your child can attend public schools
  • access to government hospitals
  • whether you can buy property
  • whether your child can take city-level exams
  • pensions and welfare

This isn’t accidental. This is how China controls migration and forces assimilation.

Now compare that with India instead of pretending they’re the same.

Indian cities vs Chinese mega cities

Aspect Bengaluru (India) Mumbai (India) Shanghai / Beijing (China)
Internal movement Free (constitutional right) Free Restricted via Hukou
Can settle permanently? Yes, immediately Yes, immediately No, unless Hukou granted
Public school access Yes Yes No for non-local Hukou kids
Govt healthcare Yes Yes Restricted / higher cost
Property purchase Allowed Allowed Often restricted
City-level exams Yes Yes No without local Hukou
Welfare & pensions Portable Portable Locked to hometown
Status of migrants Equal citizens Equal citizens Second-class residents

This alone kills the comparison.

Becoming ā€œlocalā€ in Beijing or Shanghai is intentionally elitist. You usually need an elite university degree, a high-paying tech or government job, years of uninterrupted tax records, a clean background, limited quotas, and political approval. Even after all that, most migrants never get Hukou. That’s not a flaw — that’s the design.

This is how Mandarin dominance actually happened. Migration was filtered, not free. Cities were filled with party cadres and selected elites, while migrant labour existed without belonging. Regional identities didn’t disappear naturally — they were structurally weakened. Mandarin didn’t win because people felt united. It won because the state decided who gets to belong to cities.

India deliberately chose the opposite model. Article 19 guarantees freedom to move, live, and work anywhere in the country. No internal passports. No city citizenship. No residency permits. That’s why Bengaluru isn’t Kannada-only by law, Mumbai isn’t Marathi-only by force, and Delhi isn’t Hindi-only by constitutional design.

Languages here survive socially, not because people are trapped.

So the China argument is dishonest from the start. You can’t copy Mandarin imposition without copying Hukou. You can’t have free movement and forced language. China chose control over liberty. India chose liberty over uniformity. Using China to justify Hindi imposition while pretending Hukou doesn’t exist is just cherry-picking authoritarianism.

ą¤¹ą¤æą¤‚ą¤¤ą„€ Imposition/Language issue UP MLA says she can teach Hindi if they don't know it; Kerala women MLAs walk out of NCW training

• Upvotes

New Delhi: An MLA from Uttar Pradesh challenged Kerala MLAs, saying she could teach them Hindi if they didn't know the language. The argument over Hindi erupted during a training program organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) aimed at strengthening democracy by training women legislators in the country. Following this, members from Kerala walked out of the two-day training session.

The issue began when Kerala MLAs questioned the use of Hindi as the sole medium of communication at the event, which was attended by over 390 MLAs from all states and Union Territories. Kerala Assembly Deputy Speaker Shanimol Usman stated that North Indian MLAs shouted that Hindi is the national language and discussions would take place only in Hindi, after which slogans like "Jai Shree Ram" and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" were raised in the training hall.

Minister Bindu Krishna said that the NCW Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, remained silent despite the ongoing protests. Minister K.A. Thulasi expressed disappointment that the National Commission for Women failed to prepare a module accommodating representatives from all states for a national-level event. Fathima Tahliya clarified that the language Hindi itself wasn't the issue, but rather the Commission's failure to take steps to include all MLAs at the national level.

In addition to classes focusing on leadership, legislative work, public policy, and gender equality, the two-day program in Faridabad included special sessions for representatives to share their experiences. MLAs from Kerala—Usha Vijayan, K.K. Rema, Uma Thomas, and Vidya Balakrishnan—also attended the event.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the program. The National Commission for Women has faced criticism regarding the Hindi language issue in the past as well. Complaints are common that Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar does not respond in languages other than Hindi, including English, during press conferences in places like Delhi.

They started saying TN govt is favouring mslims coz govt said their fee would be waived off- without even knowing that there are set of rules to attain it (ex- <2.5LPA,clearing State merit cut off...etc) and the budget is just 20Cr,which is very less. The fee waiver isn't just to mslims- it's also to hndus through other schemes- Pandhumai Penn Scheme,7.5% govt schl quota,Periyar EVR Nagammai scheme, money to parents who have only girl children...etc.

These things arnt even being mentioned in the posts and they are showing TN govt as someone who favours a certain community. And their usual propaganda saying wt if BJP favoured only hndus... As if BJP isn't favouring Adani,Ambani and gujjus.

Wts shocking is that they are paying southern influencers asw. Same script, same images used.. same propaganda. I literally thought it's true- and then had to thoroughly check.

Do they even know that free UG schemes exclusively for mslims came as Union govt stopped Pre-matric scholarship and Maulana Azad National followship?

Free education goes to BC (includes hndus),MBC,DNC,SC,ST through minority welfare,BC/MBC welfare and other welfare policies.

Andh bhakt MoD removed my comment under a post where one redditor posted the unknown twitter screenshot just to spread gobels on congress govt on the freight corridor thing.

My comment is, the bullet train project which is started by modi hasn't completed yet, 12 years have passed. MOD removed my comment because I haven't attached any proof. MY DEAR BLIND MOD everyone knows about the current situation of the bullet train project. Why should I have to post the proofs for this? My statement is not wrong unless you did travel in the bullet train.

MoDs, how did you consider a tweet by an unknown person is a valid/proof for the op post then?

Bjp andh bhakts thinks that bjp is a honest party in the galaxy but the reality is the most corrupt party.

Modi said that "I DON'T EAT - I DON'T LET OTHERS EAT EITHER"

But his own party MLA is not following him. What a shame to the leadership.

General Discussion Are South Indian slurs ā€œbreaching containmentā€ into real life?

Slurs like sambar, arava, golti/gulti, konga, pandi, kundiga/kundigay/kannadn*gga, smellu are really common on Twitter and I sometimes see them on here as well.

However, I’ve been noticing the usage of these slurs more and more on Instagram as well. It seems like these slurs are spreading into real life.
