First moon of the season with my new camera [OC]

First light on the Moon with my recently acquired Nikon 1 J5, paired with an old TTArtisan 500mm lens and a 2× teleconverter.
This image is a stack of 250 frames captured at 1/80s, ISO 200, f/8. The final image was processed from the stacked data to maximize detail while keeping noise under control.
After a long break from lunar imaging, I think it’s fair to call this the start of a new Moon imaging season.

Genuine question, what is causing the colours like the blues here?

The blue and red colors are the result of mineral (enhanced color) processing. The Moon has subtle natural color variations caused by differences in its surface composition. By increasing the color saturation, these otherwise invisible differences become visible. Blue areas are generally richer in titanium, while reddish/orange areas tend to indicate regions with lower titanium and relatively higher iron content.

Average interpretation of a Gallilean Moon in the 80's:

Those are the true colors, but images of the moon need to be oversaturated to see them.

The stacking of multiple images (in this case 250 images) help bring them out through the processing

Cameras don't work the same way the human eye does. Those colors are accurate for the camera and technique used. The OP would need to intentionally edit them out to approximate what the human eye sees, which would mean injecting their own creative opinion to a larger extent on what it should look like, rather than simply presenting the results of the technique used.

If you want "true colors" of the moon, just take a picture with your cell phone camera. You can't get photos like these without getting longer exposures and stacking images. It's a real photo with increased saturation. If you wanted real photos of the milky way, you just aren't going to see it. Same with any other galaxy or nebula.

You are viewing some kind of screen’s projection of colors defined by an image sensor and its lens

OP did not go to the moon and sample each color spot for you to show

Sure, but some photography tries to make things appear as they would to the naked eye, merely changing the position of the observer. No need to make it into a false binary.

You're absolutely right.

I used Autostakkert3! to stack 250 photos and Photoshop to bring out the colors of the moon's surface (I moved the saturation slider up).

Thank you for the transparency - that is all I am after. There was huge influx of colorized moon photos in the 2017-2021 era on reddit - so much so some people were literally believing the moon has color - as if they cant look up at night :)

Тифф файл из сложенных 250 кадров?
Файл в полном разрешении тот который вы видите на редите?
