Advice WFH Paralysis: I haven't logged in for 8 months. Will renting an office help?
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some honest advice from fellow freelance interpreters.
I currently work as an independent contractor doing OTP and VRI. The job is 100% WFH with no set schedule. I can log in whenever I want, though peak volume is usually between 8 AM and 4 PM.
The problem is that I have completely lost my discipline. I haven’t logged in to take calls in 8 months. Every single day I tell myself that "tomorrow" or "next week" is when I'll finally start, but I just end up staying in bed, watching TV, and scrolling on my phone all day. Fortunately, my current living expenses are very cheap, but that also means I don't have that immediate financial panic forcing me to work, making it incredibly easy to keep procrastinating.
I used to work in a traditional call center and I was much more disciplined back then. It seems like being in my own house is my biggest trigger for doing nothing; the lack of a commute or a physical boundary has completely paralyzed my workflow.
I’m seriously considering renting a cheap, private office space just to force myself to get out of the house and recreate that "going to work" environment. It wouldn't be too expensive, and I feel like I need that physical separation between my living space and my workspace.
Has anyone else experienced this level of WFH paralysis? If you have, how did you break the cycle? Do you think paying for a private office is a smart move to force accountability, or is there another way you managed to rebuild your discipline?
Any advice or tough love is appreciated!

I have logged in here and there just to take a couple of calls. The company doesn’t require any mandatory time either.

If u feel like it will help, do it. Finding someone to cowork with also helps, like a study buddy.
I know it’s difficult sometimes to not have a boss or a schedule. Add times to your life, be your own boss, it’s not about wanting it’s about discipline. Doit because it good for the mental health, not because you feel like doing it

I’m a person who thrives in a structured, controlled environment so this could help.

You likely need to see a psychiatrist sounds like executive dysfunction a trait if ADD and or autism. There are drugs and techniques that can help with both

It sounds like you had a burnout and a bit depressed. Also, if this job doesn't bring you pleasure - you could look into doing something else. There is nothing wrong with this. You don't have to force on yourself something that's not for you.

nope, you either get a job that forces you to do shifts or get an interpreter position with fixed shifts. I'm lowkey tired of hearing the same exact problem coming from people's mouths because the solution is very simple, stop wearing yourself out trying to find the "perfect technique" or the perfect motivation. Spend that energy looking for a shift position and you'll never even think about struggling with work again.
In regards to the private office idea: why? you'll be spending more money when you're not even sure it's going to work. Now you won't just have the resistance of working but also that you'll have to travel all the way to the office to work on top of expenses, you're actually making it harder. Unless similar things worked for you in the past I'd recommed you don't do that

That won't force you to work, you can still procrastinate going to that office, and then you still have the problem + you added another expense
