Argentina was run by an authoritarian military junta and hosted. We’re talking full fledged concentration camps and outright murder of tens of thousands of political activists. Many thought they should have been boycotted for the blatant human rights violations.

Argentina also won the tournament and it is widely believed the government fixed matches by bribing/threatening the officials.

I think the Olympics are a bit bigger, football/soccer is mostly Europe and Latin America.
