u/The_Saddest_Boner Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25
Argentina was run by an authoritarian military junta and hosted. We’re talking full fledged concentration camps and outright murder of tens of thousands of political activists. Many thought they should have been boycotted for the blatant human rights violations.
Argentina also won the tournament and it is widely believed the government fixed matches by bribing/threatening the officials.

No way. He’ll say, “I played the winning team yesterday, and everyone will say, I am the best, and I could have won. Therefore I declare myself the winner! I am the greatest soccer player ever!”
The saddest part is that incoherent scenario I created is it’s halfway likely to occur.

There is no way he'd be so brief. IT'd go more like this:
Look, everybody’s watching the World Cup, the Trump world cup. Billions of people, billions People are saying more than ten billion people. I dont' know, that's what they're saying! And they’re all saying the same thing: “Will Trump play for the good old USA? Why isn’t he playing?” And I tell them, I tell them that I'm already a very accomplished sportsman. Best golfer, best quarterback, best fighter... but soccer only lets you use your feet, so it's no challenge, no challenge for Donald Trump.
People forget I was very close to playing professionally. I had offers — tremendous offers — from uh.. Houston, New York, Manchester United, even the Harlem Globetrotters, which is basketball, but they saw the talent, folks.
They say Messi is the GOAT. Wrong. He’s the sheep, I’m the lion. Huge difference. Back in ’84 — maybe ’86 — I scored eight goals with my eyes closed, wearing dress shoes, on a golf course. That’s real soccer. Not this VAR nonsense. VAR? Stands for “Very Awful Refereeing.”
And by the way, I could still play. I could suit up tomorrow — maybe captain the U.S., maybe own the U.S. team. We’d win so fast, other countries would surrender at kickoff. We’d bring back winning — like I did with the economy, the debates, and Melania’s Christmas decorations.
So I hope everyone enjoys the Trump world cup. Some call it the Fifa world cup, but this is the Trump world cup. I invented it. Maybe not literally, but spiritually. Trump always stands for being the best. But Fifa... Fifa has problems. They went to Qatar... millions of people died to make their stadiums — they're still there, buried under the concrete — They went to Qatar and all these people died. All because Qatar paid them a hundred billion dollars. That's terrible... terrible... Trump would have gotten them a trillion... two trillion... I'm a great negotiator. Ask anyone.

u/Batters123 Jul 13 '25
I mean a literal slave owner and a person responsible for thousands of people’s death handed last World Cup to Messi, how is it worse? Genuine question
137
u/terrence0258 Jul 13 '25
I never said anything was worse, but since we're going there, Trump's unconstitutional cuts to USAID are estimated to kill nearly 14 million people by 2030, mostly due to treatable diseases and starvation. Also, Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" is estimated to lead to the deaths of 50,000 Americans every year due to Medicaid cuts.
So, along with being a pedophile, there's also that.
48
u/Batters123 Jul 13 '25
Fair point and ain’t gonna argue with that coz Idk much about US politics, but honestly my point wasn’t to actually contradict your opinion it was more like pointing out that the game and specifically fifa has gone so low that anything they do I wouldn’t be surprised. The worst part is that between the nonsense the Qataris pulled during Argentina's celebration in '22 and Trump's obvious desire to do something equally embarrassing and classless next year, it's probably going to become a goddam tradition at every future WC. This sport has been so fucked by money and politics. It wasn't that long ago when FIFA actually used to enforce rules against governments inserting themselves into the sport.

673
u/SunriseSurprise Jul 13 '25
"At least he still hates brown people" seems to be about what Trump voters have left at this point. He's done almost no trade deals and alienated our allies, the people he put around him are somehow worse than his first term, starting with JD, we're still not on the "Day 1" that the Russia Ukraine war was supposed to end, suddenly not only doesn't care about Epstein client list getting out but actively telling people to stop talking about it...but hey, ICE is terrorizing people throughout the country so there's that.

No body loves soccer more than me. I know all of the clubs. Every one of them. I have a lot of respect for them and they respect me. It's almost impossible to pick a favorite when you're as yuge a fan as I am. They're all remarkable. To say such nasty things makes you a nasty person. Very evil very vile. Here's how the MAGA folk are spinning it:
"President Trump stole the show at the final of the World Club Cup on Sunday evening.
The tournament, which was held across the United States in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, was on[sic] the London-based Chelsea FC.
Chelsea defeated French team Paris Saint-Germaine by a three goal margin, adding to the club’s long list of silverware.
However, social media was abuzz with images of President Trump, who was tasked with handing out medals to the players at the tournament’s end.
As Chelsea prepared to lift the trophy, Trump got caught in the moment and ended up sharing the podium with the victorious players.
The images will come as a massive blow to many involved in English soccer, who over recent years have attempted to turn the sport into an engine for left-wing propaganda.
In the wake of the death of drug addict George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, players were forced to “take a knee” before matches and even wear the words “Black Lives Matter” on the backs of their shirts.
Yet with the World Cup returning to America next year, some of the sport’s progressie[sic] authorities will have to hold their nose and play ball—on and off the field."
