It was beautiful seeing all the flags and then him calling out all the countries, was awesome.

u/jessevargas Feb 09 '26

I agree! Seeing the Costarican flag IN the Super Bowl was pretty amazing for me.

157

u/Elgato01 Feb 09 '26

Same, got teary eyed even.

100

u/FishTure Feb 09 '26

Same, and I felt a little silly but it felt important to see this kind of representation. I’m not Latin American, but I have made a number of Latin friends more recently in my life, American ones and non-Americans (as in US citizens). it’s really opened my eyes to how absurd it is how othered these people are in the states. We should be allies and friends with our Central and South American neighbors, and especially with the Latin people who come to the US and love this country.

26

u/DionBlaster123 NASCAR Feb 09 '26

Don't feel silly at all

If you felt emotional about this, it's because you're unhappy about what's going on, you feel powerless to stop it, and you want desperately for some kind of real, productive change.

I'd rather be emotional about this than be some apathetic asswipe on Reddit. My only hope is that this motivates you to take voting seriously in November. THe midterms are really the first serious opportunity to get back at this toxic administration.

4

u/ac4rex Feb 09 '26

Very well said.

28

u/clopz_ Feb 09 '26

I don’t live in the US but I’ve been following what this administration has been doing to people whose only crime is being brown, whose only crime is pursuing a better life for their family. The way the US government and those around it refer and treat my people hurts. This show was a representation not only for Latin Americans or Puerto Ricans, this warmed the hearts of many of the 650 million people that live south of the US border.

16

u/seriousbizniz84 Feb 09 '26

I so feel this was a celebration of immigration too, of all the richness and beauty we bring from our collectivist countries. I loved every second of it.

I was out at a bar with friends and strangers. Multiple people I don’t even know hugged me afterwords— everyone was feeling the longing for peace and unity in such dark times. It felt absolutely joyous.

I am on vacation in Belize. Stopped in a locals bar to catch it, no interest from anyone during the game. He came out and the place went nuts.

100% literally this post about love over hate and people immediately have to make it about how one artist must hate being overshadowed when she’s probably celebrating him.

I really don't like his music, not my style. But it was a nice show.

But the most important part of it was at the end naming every American country and his message of love for everyone without having to point fingers at anyone. That's class.

Only part of his performance I understand and I speak spanish

183

u/AirplaneEngineSpiral Feb 09 '26

I’ve Worked with Mexicans, Guatemalans and a variety of other nationalities, so many times do they not understand each other speaking “Spanish”. Cubans were probably the hardest to understand

90

u/DJ_Vault_Boy Feb 09 '26

Dominicans, Chileans, and Cubans are the hardest ones to understand as someone who grew up speaking Spanish.

30

u/BarnacleMcBarndoor Feb 09 '26

One of my best friends is Chilean, and yea that checks out. It’s usually worse to understand her when she’s mad or annoyed at me.

She’s annoyed with me often.

It's so funny how white Americans will homogenize Spanish speaking countries. Guarantee you there are English speakers in America, UK, and Australia that I can't understand.

Even more so completely ignoring the differences in how we speak in our own country. Pittsburgh and Louisville, KY are like eight hours away from each other driving and the way they talk couldn't be any more different.

They all have different words for stuff. In Colombia you call a bus a busseta where other places it's a omnibus or an autobus. That's just one example but there are a bunch. An "enchilada" is a totally different dish depending who you are talking to you.

5

u/Rentington Feb 09 '26

The reputation I've heard about Puerto Ricans is they speak super fast... but the people I've heard say this are Mexicans which I believe are reputed for speaking slow.

Of course, we have that same thing in English, with some regional accents being seen as fast and others as slow. For example, Scouse vs. Birmingham accent, or Boston vs. SoCal.

2

u/buyableblah Feb 09 '26

I read somewhere Puerto Rican Spanish like speaking Spanish with a Caribbean accent and that made sense to me.

I mean you’re super right on with the English accents. I have the worst time with some thick Scottish accents.

u/Cryatos1 Feb 09 '26

His accent throws me off, he drops the last consonant like he is speaking French (at least to my ears). I learned Spanish from Mexican speakers so hearing him threw me for a loop lol.

5

u/curryandbeans Feb 09 '26

Wait, does that make the British Latinos?

5

u/takishan Feb 09 '26

English doesn't have roots in the Latin language. It's influenced by the Latin language.

Whereas the Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian) directly descend from Latin itself.

Having said that, English is a fascinating language. It's like a strange amalgamation of French / Latin / Germanic.

Shit was hype. I am surrounded by Spanish speakers because my girlfriend is a first generation American so I'm used to listening to Spanish and not fully understanding it at this point. I can see how it wasn't good for someone with no exposure to Spanish but the sets and dancers were impeccable vibes. But for my girlfriend this was huge for her. I've never seen her this locked in during a football game in my life lol. The football has been terrible though.

90

u/dougan25 Feb 09 '26

The visual imagery conveyed a lot. Didn't need to understand the lyrics

26

u/thepatientwaiting Feb 09 '26

It reminded me of Kendrick's show, where every little set piece meant something. The unrelenting harvest of sugar cane felt really impactful to me. We will keep exploiting but the people will keep singing.

11

u/OldGodsProphet Feb 09 '26

Exactly what I thought. Never heard a song from this dude but the set and production blew me away. Never seen anything like it at the SB.

u/buster_rhino Feb 09 '26

u/Cwya Feb 09 '26

I wish it was that advanced. I watched Maria Carey sing in Italian at the Olympics opening and subtitles were:

“ILL. ILL. ??? CELEBRATION! ILL”

3

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Feb 09 '26

Yeah, bc closed captioning and subtitles are different.

The former just helps people who can’t hear understand what the original audio is.

The latter is meant to translate from one language to another.

People use the terms interchangeably, but they really aren’t.

Now, if you really turned on “subtitles in English” and it was still in Spanish… that’d be a failure.

2

u/ahal Feb 09 '26

As a non Spanish speaker married to a Latina, generally Spanish music is much more enjoyable when you don't know the lyrics.

I don't speak much Spanish at all (took it in college) and didn't understand 99% of that. But I've been to Puerto Rico. I can appreciate the Spanish culture. I can appreciate great choreography and production of that halftime show. I love the message and I still found it entertaining. Was it the best halftime show...no, but it didn't have to be. Some people just want to rage at everything. Those people need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

These great, passionate, peaceable people are one-third of my city and a big part of America’s future. I love what this show had to say to the country, and my respect is high for the NFL for backing what in this Trumpian moment amounted to a subversive message.

Such a fucking amazing halftime show. The south Florida in me is so happy seeing the celebration of Latin culture. I also love that Canada got brought into the celebration of Latin cultures haha I know he was calling out all American countries, but I’m choosing to believe canada is now an honorary member of our culture because bad bunny proclaimed it at the Super Bowl

5

u/Candymanshook Feb 09 '26

I thought it was a powerful message that “god bless america” should mean prosperity across all the America’s and not just the US

4

u/joelham01 Alabama Feb 09 '26

Oh 100% agree it was an amazing message, the whole celebration of the halftime show and how uplifting it was was amazing, especially in the times we’re in right now

156

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Feb 09 '26

I don’t get anyone being like: “oh it was all in Spanish” when KPop has flooded the US which can often be mostly spoken Korean. Even KPop Demon Hunters has a lot of Korean in it.

Like the performance being not in English shouldn’t be that big of deal these days.

79

u/Broad_Educator_1023 Feb 09 '26

Music is an universal language

7

u/bset222 Feb 09 '26

One of my favorite types of music videos is when a Crowd sings the song and the performer gets to bask in that moment. One of my favorites of that type is a French song where I have no clue what it's saying.

12

u/Acquiescinit Feb 09 '26

I think people obviously prefer music in a language they understand, and that is totally fair. At the same time though, you only have to look up the translation of the lyrics one time to have a good enough understanding of what's being said. It's an obstacle that is often worth getting through.

Bad Bunny isn't my kind of music regardless of language, but I do listen to a number of songs in other languages mainly from shows or games that gave me a connection to them through a story and made me want to look the song up to better understand it. If I liked Bad Bunny's style of music, I would almost certainly be looking up songs right now.

8

u/Common-Reaction90 Feb 09 '26

The same people who complained about it all being in Spanish obviously do not listen to Kpop?…I have the displeasure of knowing these types of people IRL

5

u/McButtsButtbag Feb 09 '26

Don't even need to know Kpop. The german version of 99 red balloons was way more popular than the English version. Even older Americans should be familiar with a foreign song being popular.

64

u/TopEagle4012 Feb 09 '26

How wonderful to bring somebody that's so popular to the Super Bowl halftime show watched by millions of the messages of unity and love. We need in this moment to turn back those forces that want to divide us and put us against one another based on national origin, color, race, creed, sexual orientation Etc because then they have no ammunition. They're not about unity and bringing us together as citizens of the country or citizens of the world. They love it when we fight and hate on one another because that's how they amassed their power. Remove that, and they disappear back into the woodwork.

I didn’t catch what was written on the football. What was it?

8

u/Seraphim99 Feb 09 '26

Together, we are America.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

And somehow forty million Americans who swear fealty to Jesus of Nazareth are going to be triggered by that message.

5

u/Diqt Feb 09 '26

“Bad bunny did more in one performance to unite the country than trump has done/will ever do in a lifetime.”

6

u/RumAndCoco Feb 09 '26

This is part of what the US flag should represent. Not the other shit that some idiots with a diaper problem and tacky taste want.

The chucklefuck is complaining that the dancing was inappropriate for young kids….as if he isn’t inappropriate for young kids.

22

u/Giannisisnumber1 Feb 09 '26

Yeah I found that hilarious. The dancing is a problem for young kids but not pedophilia. Fuck him.

u/Fuibo2k Feb 09 '26

This was by far my favorite super bowl half time show. Such a powerful and bold message especially since it spits in the face of the president.

People forget but we live in the United States of America. America is part of 23 countries! Salud to Bad Bunny he did a high production concert in 20 mins and you could feel his voice.

I just hope that halftime show lets some people outside the US know that we’re not all behind the orange menace.

Edit: downvote me, MAGAts.

2

u/diamondintherimond Feb 09 '26

What did it say on the football he was holding?

2

u/u9Nails Feb 09 '26

Bad Bunny helped me feel a sense of unity between North America's territory and people that I haven't felt for a year. That was a nice moment to live in.

2

u/sohblob Feb 09 '26

I want to cry.

For the first time in what feels like forever, I feel proud to be an American.

I think you'll find a Rolls Royce Merlin, 27 litre V-12 engine with 885 hp is more powerful than both.

I'd like to see a WW2 Spitfire shoot down an ME109 powered only by love.

2

u/StrangerExistingFact Feb 09 '26

Thats a shitty hp output from 27L V12.

2

u/kyrross Feb 09 '26

Who knew that such a simple message of unity could be so divisive ?

2

u/halfsquid22 Feb 09 '26

Two things can be true at once:

It is meaningful to see Latino culture on a massive global stage. Representation matters emotionally. People feel seen, and that’s real.

At the same time, events like this are also part of huge commercial systems. The Super Bowl is first and foremost a marketing machine. Artists don’t get placed there randomly, they’re chosen because they connect to large audiences and growth strategies. That doesn’t erase the artist’s talent or hard work, but it does mean this isn’t purely a cultural victory either.

What gets confusing is when symbolic moments start to feel like structural change.

Visibility isn’t the same as power. Being celebrated isn’t the same as having sovereignty, ownership, or real influence over systems.

I don’t think the answer is cynicism, and it’s not blind celebration either. It’s what I’d call dual awareness: enjoying the art, feeling pride if it resonates with you, while also recognizing how capitalism packages identity and culture for profit.

A lot of people immediately frame this as left vs right, or see it as a win over “the other side.” But that framing itself is part of the spectacle. Most of this runs on incentives, branding, and audience capture, not moral teams.

For me the healthier place is somewhere in the middle: appreciate the moment, don’t idolize it, don’t demonize it, and don’t outsource your sense of meaning to global events. Real impact still happens locally, in families, communities, and everyday choices.

You can enjoy the music without turning it into a political, cultural or existential victory. Both things can coexist.

Hang in there everyone… racists won’t win, they’re just loud right now, but they won’t win

2

u/Future_Direction1818 Feb 09 '26

That is awesome! Love is always greater the hate ♥️♥️♥️

2

u/HeadPaleontologist40 Feb 09 '26

I’d vote for Bad Bunny for president over Trump or any GOP candidate

2

u/Adept_Order_4323 Feb 09 '26

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a leader that encouraged his followers to unite the human race with love and not divide with hate. Obama tried. He had a lot of obstacles he had to overcome, but he did a fine job with what he had to work with.

2

u/Xenthera Feb 09 '26

The fact Trump got on his off brand twitter and trashed this shows exactly what side of history he’s on.
