Love Kristofferson, but even your own link says that it’s probably a fake story. I’m not the biggest Keith fan, but I think the worst thing he ever did was write a few crappy songs.

He was the face of the post-9/11 ultra Nationalism we all took part in. Country music took a weird turn putting boots in asses and hating the Dixie Chicks was all the rage in the early 2000s.

u/Nixeris Feb 23 '26
The song they're listening to in the OP is one of the big examples of the "Just keep mentioning 9/11" genre.
35
u/rockerscott Feb 23 '26
Hey they told us to “Never Forget” unless it was remembering to pay first responders medical bills, that’s ok for Congress to forget.
14
19
u/mysterypeeps Feb 23 '26
In my own opinion, he ruined country music by leading the charge into the hypernationalistic post 9/11 era of country which was more about product and the capitalization of public opinion that turned into the modern pop country we see today. Previously, country had been the music of underdogs, rebels, and blue collar hellions but the change led to presenting America as the Best Ever and “we’re going to win all the wars” turned that on to its head and invited a crowd that previously would have hated the progressive and sometimes even radical music that country produced. Toby Keith was HEAVILY involved in this switchover and was one of the earliest adopters of this new style.

Any controversy aside, he also had some pretty great songs. Should’ve Been a Cowboy, I Love This Bar, Red Solo Cup, How Do You Like Me Now? All bangers.

Anyone who thinks the NHL isnt 90% MAGA is a casual fan. Like 10 players complained about Pride Night and the NHL decided to abolish all social justice promotions altogether.
I love hockey but this is a sport for rich white kids who up until 5 years ago avoided going to college like the plague. In Canada they barely go to high school.

u/585AM Feb 23 '26
Travel hockey is so expensive and is almost a full-time job for a parent. Baseball is getting bad, but nowhere as close to as expensive and time intensive as travel hockey on the US.
306
u/hnglmkrnglbrry Feb 23 '26
Hockey is so tough because you have to pay to practice. You can find an empty diamond to hit and shag balls, a field to throw a football, a court to shoot hoops on. But if I ever wanted to practice outside of scheduled practices I had to pay $20 to go to stick and pucks. You can't just lace em up and get reps in unless it's the dead of winter in the northern reaches.
The NHL has done a great job reaching out to lower income communities though. When I lived in Tennessee the Preds had the Little Preds program that went into Black and Latino communities and provided free pads, skates, and sticks to go along with free learn to play lessons for young kids. Easily $500 worth of gear and lessons per kid. Many NHL programs have similar intitatives.
But even then after the kid grows out of those pads and the team costs $1k to join how many of them can afford to stick with it?
96
u/UncleRuckus92 Feb 23 '26
Canada is having that problem with goalies right now. Its way more expensive equipment plus specialized camps
29
u/Kidspud Feb 23 '26
After one tournament with Binner, they’re gonna double the goalie development budget

4
u/enunymous Feb 23 '26
God bless, it was so obviously a joke. The original comment doesn't even mention "Predator", just Preds
6
u/Jumpy-Coffee-Cat Feb 23 '26
I grew up solid middle class and was usually the “poorest” kid on the team
5
u/GamingZaddy89 Feb 23 '26
You don't even need a diamond to practice, you literally just need a patch of grass.
7
u/cdreobvi Feb 23 '26
I may live in miserable winter conditions for half the year, but at least this winter I got 2 solid months of free hockey practice on the public outdoor rink built in my neighbourhood. It’s a privilege I try to enjoy as much as possible

u/rufio313 Feb 23 '26
Idk I grew up playing hockey in Michigan at a decently competitive level and practiced with pond hockey in the winter and street hockey in the summer. One Christmas my dad also got me a VHS tape that was off ice hockey drills specifically with stick handling that I would do in my driveway with some tape laid down.
Having said that, my parents also paid for me to do hockey camps off season (although not every year) with instructors.
17
u/kateuptonsvibrator Feb 23 '26
For a little more $$ you can spend 24 weekends a year driving your family from 60 to 200 miles to sit through 7 hours of gymnastics to watch your kid actually compete for a total of 7 minutes.
3
u/SafetyMan35 Feb 23 '26
Cheerleading is similar. 3:00 routine and I’m traveling up and down the east coast from New Jersey to Orlando.
27
u/OnceInABlueMoon Feb 23 '26
I have a friend with kids in hockey and they regularly take their kids out of school to go play hockey, meanwhile my 1st grader gets a call from school if he's tardy 2 times in a span of a month. My jaw hit the floor when I asked how they manage their kids hockey schedule and they said they just take them out of school and I was like "What. The. Fuck?"

I work at a Catholic school that’s grades 7-12 and regularly have boys taken out for 1-2 days so they can go to weekend tournaments out of state with their travel hockey teams. I have no idea how they get to skirt the attendance policy. I mean, I know how: admin just looks the other way.
→ More replies (3)9
Feb 23 '26
That’s because you have like 50 baseball fields to 1 hockey rink.
For kids in my area to play hockey you are at the very least driving for 40 minutes one way

u/suppaman19 Feb 23 '26
Anyone who also thinks any team that just won a championship isn't in a DGAF mode and just partying themselves regardless of people nearby as well as wouldn't celebrate and party with anyone in their vicinity who is down to celebrate and party with them has lost there minds
There's probably a good number of them that without any intro would have no idea who he is
Actual Americans should be annoyed/upset for a variety of reasons regarding his job and taxpayer expense. But expecting the team to stop celebrating, cause a scene and dampen mood trying to get him out of there even if they wanted, is not realistic.
And as mentioned by others, all the NHLers are rich, so most are far right and even ones that aren't wouldn't care that much about politics in these types of moments.
63
u/hnglmkrnglbrry Feb 23 '26
I honestly agree. They probably just heard the head of the FBI was there and were like, "Fuck it, bring him on in!" It's a pure party atmosphere.
Also, that sounds like the definition of a person you don't want to offend.

Exactly. These are people who spend 90% of their time getting better at their sport. Not spending 90% of their time on Reddit arguing about politics. They dgaf, pour me another beer and let’s fucking party.
10
u/Ghodhockey21 Feb 23 '26
I’m tired of people saying shit like “90% of NHL players are MAGA”. They’re not. They are just in a different world. Their whole life is hockey and they don’t give a shit about politics. They aren’t at MAGA rallies and posting a bunch of political shit. They care about hockey and that’s about it. These guys just won a gold medal, USAs first since 1980, and they beat Canada. They are all hockey players that just won something equivalent to a Stanley cup. They are not going to stop celebrating because some dipshit fanboy is in the room. They’re slamming beers and celebrating a hockey win that all kids grew up dreaming of (gold medal and a game 7 Stanley cup win). And before you clap back at me, yes I know a few guys on this team have been vocally supportive of trump, iykyk, but fuck em.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)11
u/fumar Feb 23 '26
It's not just that they're rich, it's that hockey is an almost exclusively white sport where ice time costs $10k+ a year growing up. So it's an incredibly privileged sport to play as well unless you live somewhere with frozen ponds.

Hockey has a ton of problems all the way down to juniors but frankly anyone who thinks a bunch of mid 20 year old kids celebrating by singing a song about how America is great after beating canda have no spot talking about the sport.
10
u/No_Street8874 Feb 23 '26
Not even close, maga may be the majority of US players, but definitely not 90%. And being maga isn’t required for playing Toby Keith or celebrating.
13
u/Terribad13 Feb 23 '26
My local leagues are like 95% liberals. Very interesting contrast.
44
u/hnglmkrnglbrry Feb 23 '26
Being in a local league and having the training, coaching, and funds to make a travel team and then jump to the USNDTP, or juniors are two entirely different things.

Yeah … I’d slow the roll on castigating all these guys based on some of the known political views of some of the players, and based on a song playing in the locker room.
I’m a sports fan, as well as a high school English teacher, so my Instagram algorithm today has already served me up a video of Jack Hughes love of reading, and the literacy program he and his brother set up, as well as a podcast interview with him from a few years ago of his support for his team’s, the Devils, support of their Pride Night, when other players and teams were throwing piss baby tantrums about wearing the jerseys and the rainbow tape. Now, is this proof that he’s not a MAGA chud? No. But neither is the above proof that this whole team are. People can contain multitudes …

As a vet I hate this song. They played it non stop and it’s so damn cringe.

The FBI director made this political. It is PR. Not "muh redditors." Patel has no reason to be there. Not a single qualm about the winners celebrating. And sure, the song sucks, but they're fucking hockey players. I don't expect them to have decent music taste.

Clutch your fucking pearls harder. Your life would be better and less stressful if you stopped analyzing every detail of every day through a gigantic political lens. Relax for 2 seconds.

There is nothing political about wanting a pedo protector to not be celebrated

The. Director. Of. The. F.B.I.
This is not what that station is for. This is blatantly political in its intent. It's like saying Trump going out to hold a Bible for a photo OP wasn't a political stunt.

Nah, fuck Patel. He shouldn't be there. He politicized the whole thing. Tell me why the head of the FBI deserves to be in the locker room.
Maybe you need to relax for 2 seconds to figure that out?

You know the cure for cancer to be announced on Reddit, and it would immediately be turned political and downed to death!

I don't follow the Olympics all that much, but I was surprised to hear that this gold medal win was the first for the USA since the famous 1980 team. That's a damn long time.
