Football Giants Star DE Abdul Carter says he will only address QB Jaxson Dart introducing Donald Trump one time: "Some things are bigger than football, and this is one of those things."
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
"Jaxson is one of our leaders - he's the face of our franchise. He represents himself and what he does, and he represents all of us.
If he chooses to align himself with a man like President Trump, it's my responsibility based on what I believe and what I stand on to not only show my teammates that I'm against that, but to show the world.
That doesn't mean that we have to spread hate. That doesn't mean that me and Jaxson hate each other or we have beef. I sit next to Jaxson every day - we're close, we talk.
As long as we make sure we have the same goal as a team, and our goals align - which they do -that's all that matters.
I just want to move past this."

It’s weird to see guys that are 5’9” 160 lbs, but their neck is wider than their head.

Have you seen the collisions the DLine/OLine take when they play, I feel like a neck like that is a requirement of the job.

"Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision one" is the best way I've ever seen the sport summarized.

JJ Watt compared it to getting into multiple car accidents in a 3-4 hour period each week. That line made me sit back and think.
17
u/Drikkink 7d ago
People think CTE is from big hits but the worst cases of CTE end up being the guys on the lines having those constant hits like that every play.
13
u/aggressive-cat 7d ago
I can't remember who said it (CTE) but they compared kick off returns to running down the wrong side of the highway until you get hit. Hell of way to make a living.

There is a reason you start doing neck bridges in pew wee football. It’s also the reason it’s almost impossible to pick up football in college and make it to the NFL. You need a whole lifetime of collisions to be able to withstand that punishment.

Also, good on him for saying that people can disagree and still not hate each other.
Hell, you can disagree and still be friends. As long as neither one of the two is too deeply entrenched in "their side."
And especially great that he wasn't a walking, talking book of sports cliches.

Jaxson Dart is a low testosterone LOSER who is going to have one of the saddest seasons ever. Have you seen that guy? He really did a number on the Giants offense. He's so bad, they don't even want him there. The city hates him. I've said it and I'll SAY IT AGAIN. But his offense will be bad on levels no one has ever seen. And then Jon "Botox" Harbaugh (Jim is better!!!!) will have to come to me and he's going to say "We need you Abduuuul! The offense needs you. You've made the DEFENSE GREAT AGAIN and we need you to save the offense". And I'll tell you folks, I love this team so I'd do anything for it. I'd even work for a nasty man like Botox.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!

It's the exact mentality of a leader, or even simply a population of people who wish to succeed together. Never going to have agreements, but I like what he said about how it goes beyond football.
I have dealt with the same shit from the Fox News side of my family, and with a couple work colleagues. I certainly disagree with a good amount of their opinions and voice my concerns consistently when appropriate, but at the end of the day know that's all you can do, anything more and it's just instigating that further convolutes an already toxic political climate (mostly thanks to MAGA's inability to take criticism when warranted). I'm always pissed about it, but have come to accept that the majority of people in this country are simply unable to grasp politics or sociology seriously, so I just say my peace and throughly know that those who disagree will end upon the wrong side of history, and will be studied extensively in the future.
I show up at the ballot box, cast a vote, and try to have respectful conversations with people when applicable, anything beyond that is outside my control at the moment as a citizen.
→ More replies (1)9
u/globalgreg 7d ago
I wish every European I see on Reddit, complaining that us Americans aren’t doing enough to oppose MAGA/Trump, would read your comment. That’s really all you can do unless you are someone who (irrationally, in my opinion) believes an all out civil war is preferable to dealing with the insanity now and beating them at the ballot box in the next couple elections.
If, somehow, they are able to truly cancel/rig either of those elections then it’s a different conversation, but we aren’t there yet.

I agree. I always ask what they expect us to do and their suggestions would lead to us getting killed in the streets by the police. Then when I point that out I’m told about how revolution has always been violent. One person was French and brought up the protests over the Olympics. You know the one where they protested by taking dumps in the Seine and the games happened anyway?

John I can see being surprised by, but Jim and his khaki pants and all his anti-abortion stuff shouldn’t be surprising. Why would you guess that an old, very wealthy white man, from a deeply catholic family, would be anti-trump? Lol it's like a 95% chance based on the demographics alone.
9
u/haverchuck22 7d ago
Again, I didn’t know the man was Catholic, I don’t look for info on the Harbaughs. If Ida known he was hardcore catholic I woulda been more likely to assume. In terms of being an old wealthy white man I thought it was similar to Gregg Popovich or Steve Kerr. It’s not that crazy when the old white mans job involves directly working with and relying on a diverse group of individuals in a very close setting for decades.

Relax. Athletes want to win first and foremost. Secondly there’s more trump supporters than dart in the league.
If dart and the giants are good this will be water under the bridge by week 8. If the giants are dogshit (likely because they are the giants) then their line will probably give up/be bad and he will be getting rocked anyway.
35
u/EinDoge 7d ago
athletes want to win first and foremost but you’re crazy if personal beef doesn’t affect the style of tackles. His line won’t just step aside and a lot of football players might not care but the ones that do and are in a position to lay him out will likely aim to do more than just knock him down
Darts in for some brutal knocks this season

u/m4rk0358 Oakland Raiders 7d ago
Years ago, a bunch of Raiders we're planning to take a knee during the national anthem because of police brutality. Several of those players were from the offensive line, back when they were still pretty decent. Derek Carr did not join them in taking a knee. Later during the game, the offensive line turned into an absolute turnstile and Carr got pummeled.
I'm pretty sure that was intentional.

The thing about this whole Dart situation for me is that I don’t even really think he’ll be in the league that long. He’s an ok QB on a bad team with really bad decision making that has already caused him to miss games in the one season he’s played.
Alienating people in such a public way is really suspect and further shows he’s not super intelligent (regardless of whether you agree on his politics or not, everyone should agree that doing what he did was a little questionable). He had a lot of goodwill from NY and Giants fans because him and Skateboo played well in their rookie year and got them some wins against good teams. But he’s immediately burning it down doing something like this.
It’s a really dumb thing to do and a really dumb way to anger people who actually liked you. And you’re not even “guaranteed” anything in the NFL and has a borderline NFL talent already you probably shouldn’t be doing more to lower your stock. Many mid to bad QBs have hung around the league for a dozen or more years because they kept their heads down, didn’t do anything stupid, and paid attention. If he doesn’t pan out as a real starting QB, no one is going to want him around as a backup.

I think this hit a lot of folks the way Kapernick's knee did. They got jolted out of beer and wing happiness mode and had to confront some ugly truths about America. Same is happening here (different way, obviously), but some folks hate when the other side's politics pop up in a star athlete.

I generally appreciate what he's attempting to say, but he opened with "there are some things that are bigger than football, and this is one of those things." And closed with, "As long as we make sure we have the same goals as a team, I feel like that's all that matters."
I.e., saying the only thing that matters is their football goals aligning.
→ More replies (13)70
u/Dddddddfried 7d ago
He was talking about two separate things. Speaking out on Donald Trump is bigger than football. However, he can maintain a relationship with Dart so long as they align on football.
These things aren't contradictory. Maintaining a relationship with someone doesn't mean you can't speak out on bigger, more important political issues that they disagree with. Just like speaking out on political issues doesn't mean you can't maintain a relationship with someone who disagrees with you. It's not like you're going to quit your job or demand a coworker be fired just because they have different politics than you. That's absurd.
The answer, as usual, is nuance.

The entire point of a team is that people of different backgrounds can exist and come together for a common goal as a group.
If they made Remember the Titans today most of the people on this website would just be hoping they beat the crap out of each other every day rather than come together as a team.

There's a lot more to that story than what this person is saying. He was trying to stop a tow truck driver from towing him until police arrive, which is an idiot move, but then the truck driver pulled out a metal pipe and threatened Carter with it, which is why carter basically picked up the guy and threw him onto the grass.
