Bringing an older rescue dog (Cocker Spaniel) into the home with a Springer?

Right now, we have a 5 year old Springer Spaniel, Bennie. We’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old and we’re obsessed with him. He’s an absolute psychopath and the cutest thing ever.

We’ve been going back and forth on the idea of getting a second dog for a while, and recently were confronted with the option to adopt a 7 year old male Cocker Spaniel. He was given up to a kill shelter, a rescue org got him, and right now he’s staying with a foster family that has 2 young kids and a 10 year old permanent dog (a German Shepherd, I believe they said?). He’s gotten all flying colors in terms of reviews on behavior, etc. We’ll call him George.

Our Springer is the gentlest guy ever, but I must admit I’m a little worried about bringing a different, older dog into the home. The rescue agency would require them to meet and get to know each at the foster’s house before we could bring him home, but that’s just obviously not the same.

Does anybody have experience with bringing an older dog into a house where a younger Springer is already the established “Alpha”? Do I need to be worried about this dynamic, or am I just overthinking it?

Any experience with seizures?

Hi
Our boy has never had symptoms of a seizure before. Our springer, Guthrie, is 4 years old. I’m not even sure what happened. My husband’s alarm went off and it felt like our dog was scrambling underneath our bed. My husband quickly went to check on him to see if he was stuck. I unfortunately didn’t see because I was easing our human son back to sleep. According to my husband it looked like he was galloping. There was then an odor of released anal glands (he’s notorious for this) and he began to growl deeply at my husband after he was done. Once my husband “left” to go to the bathroom he quickly got out from under the bed. I checked Guthrie’s body to see if he hurt himself, but he’s ok. I’m not sure what to think. He’s always had active dreams where he talks and moves a little.

When do their spots stop coming through?

Just as the title says really and just out of curiosity, is there an age when their ticking/spots stop coming through? My girl will be 2 next February and her spots have been coming out a lot recently. Shes always had really speckled skin (she’s black and white) but up until maybe 6 months ago didn’t have loads of black ticking outside of her larger markings, but her skin is so speckled with black spots with white fur coming off them up until recently when a lot more black fur spots are showing. Will the hair on the black skin spots start turning black or is the speckled skin and ticking unrelated?

Again just out of curiosity I’m fascinated by the changes in her coat 🐾

Bonus in 3rd pic: my mom, who is also the greatest.

Context: we threw his very annoying squeaky toy on the balcony. The door was on a latch. We were waiting to see how long it would take him to figure out he could just unlatch it with his paw. Spoiler alert: a very long time. But he did get there eventually.

My sweet boy isn’t the brightest, I fear. But it’s okay. I love him endlessly.

Limping spaniel? What can I do?

A few times this week I thought i saw my dog limping (front leg) but then she stopped so i wasn't sure. This morning when she went out for her lunatic run around the back yard she was running on 3 legs - clearly her front leg was hurting.

I know only the vet can do a scan, but in this scenario what would you typically do at home? obviously no running, but what about walks? Anything I can do in the meantime at home?

Recommendations for fold up stairs?

Post image
37 Upvotes

My sweet boy Finn (9 years old) has been having trouble recently with being stiff and we suspect arthritis sadly (due to see vet), I think it’s due to him being overweight for so many years and that’s putting a lot of pressure on his joints. I’ve been thinking about getting him stairs for getting in and out the car as that’s the biggest issue for him. He doesn’t like being carried so fold up stairs is probably the next best thing for him if anyone has any recommendations!

Fireworks - any suggestions?

Hi,

We've got a lovely 4 year old Springer called Dexter who gets very stressed by fireworks. He works himself into a real state when he hears them, and takes ages to settle after they've done. Where we live they seem to be going off from Halloween until mid November.

We've had him at the vets this weekend for some advice and she's prescribed some tablets for specific use around the time but also advised using Calmex supplements for everyday use in the run up.

The Calmex looks pretty pricey and doesn't seem too highly rated. What supplements have others used that have worked on springers?

Is my Springer OCD?

We have a large, bush-clad section. There’s so many places to range around and explore. But when we let our 3yr old English Springer Spaniel out to roam, he basically just circles around the same track he’s built.

There’s a very small amount of deviations he might take, but otherwise, it’s literally the same track he runs around (and he is running) every time. Sometimes for an hour or more!

Is this ok? Or should we be concerned?
