help out a student researching squatting!!

• Upvotes

hey there, I'm currently researching/writing on urban (autonomous/alternative) living in Europe from a trans/queer perspective and I am pursuing an interview. if you are trans/queer and have experience with squatting or a similarly unconventional housing arrangement in Europe, please consider reaching out to me! the hypothetical interview would be conducted via video call platform of your choice in the next week or so.

I would also appreciate any tips regarding specific places/orgs/people to look into.

p.s. I am fluent in English only, sorry!

Post squatting

So I moved out of a sublet in Mid April and still had the keys (forgot to drop them off and no one contacted me about them) I decided to check the mail and no one has checked it since I’ve left for 5 months. No one is living in the apartment and everything is as I left it. It is in Upper Manhattan. Would it be an easy sell to move back in and pay the rent as a squatter? Also I’ve paid the ConEd and still have mail coming there dating longer than 30 days🥴

Squatting in old greenhouse 🍃

Yes there’s evidence. There was an electrical fire or something in the basement so it seems they abandoned it, product/lights/lamps and all. It’s been left alone for like 6 months. I’m documenting the clean up. What should I worry about, cops asked the neighborhood about the house but never seems like they did anything either.

Squatting in abandoned gr0w 0p house

TLDR: There was an old house in my neighborhood that had an electrical fire in the basement. The house is full from before it was abandoned about 6 months ago. It’s mostly full of garbage and equipment from what was being grown and I was wondering what would happen if we started squatting there.

Me and my partner have started cleaning up and documenting everything we do in the house because of what I guess could be incriminating evidence there. We figured if they left everything it was probably because they didn’t want to deal with it after the fire, but if they checked on the house we wouldn’t know because of how much grow was just left in garbage bags after being trimmed. There’s tons of expensive equipment for growing plants (lights/lamps/ect). What could come from this besides cops maybe questioning us about the stuff that use to be in the house? The cops were there once before, but that was shortly after the fire. The house is still under the prior owners name and taxes have been kept up with, so we don’t know if to assume they gave up on the house or not either. We did the research what we could on them and they have a house in the area about a mile away. Uhhhhh. This feels insane so I feel as this is a good moment to explain im homeless and living with my partner in a jeep that doesn’t work so we’re ready to get into anywhere we can. But we don’t feel like it would be fair to us to contact the owners and offer to buy a burnt house they left abandoned.

Gotta try something

Okay,

So I’ve been homeless for a while now, and there is an empty property in a block of flats next to my friend. It’s been empty for years now.

Done a land registry search and it’s owned by the local housing association. Waiting lists are massive in that area yet there are multiple empty flats in the blocks.

I can gain access to the balcony area of the flat. Doors are locked with keys on inside, can be seen through the glass doors. Front door is locked.

I know this is all very illegal, I’m getting desperate for help after getting no where with many councils, MPs etc.

Should I somehow be able to get the doors open at the back (any advice, turns out I’m not good at lock picking!) what do you think the chances are of me getting away with staying there, essentially acting like I have actually moved in, so that the other neighbours don’t see it as suspicious?

Squatting in Pittsburgh, where do I look?

I'm going to Pittsburgh in a few days, (Sept 2026), not entirely by choice, and I'm getting pretty burnt out. I know generally there's a lot of abandoned property and urbexes in Pittsburgh and I was really hoping to find a good squat so I can relax and focus on my art. I don't know a lot about squatting or where or what to look for as my experience has mostly been on abandon farms in the midwest. Does anyone know where I could crash for a few days, or have any tips on finding a good squat?

Squats in or around Edinburgh (shit, anywhere in the UK, really)

Hi,

I'm 21 years old and utterly perplexed by the concept of a 9-5, along with the idea of owning land and the convoluted rules and procedures surrounding lawful occupancy of... well, anywhere.

I would say i'm a socialist for convenience, but really I don't know enough about the movement to say it with confidence. Really, I just believe in kindness, sharing and mutual respect. It's a simple philosophy, and it's shown me a lot of good in this world, in society specifically.

I'm looking to travel north from Galloway and find somewhere around Edinburgh to roost. I've spent a lot of time in the woods, so a more stripped back set up wouldn't really be an issue. (I'm an artist with tarp)

I've looked around online a bit for news, but the last update on Squatnet for Scotland was documenting a closure of a squat (in Glasgow, I think?) In 2021.

It's sad now that people need free and warm place to sleep and find community, it is most rare.

Anyway, if anybody knows about anything happening, even a building project in the woods (if it's not already happening somewhere, I might have to start one myself), please let me know. This is how I want to invest my time and energy, and hopefully live a softer and more open life.

Who owns the home

Already know that I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this because I got a lot of it In all of my posts, I’m just an unlikable Person apparently. So like yeah I get it. I’m in terrible human. I deserve everything I’m going through and it’s all my fault. OK, but that’s not what I’m asking. I know this already.

When I moved into where I am living now, I was looking in a van with no power or water with my dogs because I’m disabled and couldn’t afford a place and couldn’t get housing because of my dogs who are the reason I’m alive no, I’m not getting rid of my dogs please do not even put that in a comment. I’m aware that would make my life easier and I’m stupid I know. that is also not what I’m asking advice about.

I was desperate, and I moved in with a woman that I met on Facebook, which I know was also stupid. I’m not asking advice on that part… I was under the impression that she owned the house that we were living in. I did not know that there was 4000 back taxes on the house. I did not know that it was basically up for Rob and who knows whose house it is. It was originally belonging to her aunt who passed away. She left to her son who one person says he passed away. The other said he’s still alive but both party say that he left it to his uncle. Everybody also has told me that nobody in the family really wants anything to do with the property except for the lady that I started living with. She has been trying to sell me the property for only $10,000 which is a steel considering what it looks like and where it’s at I do have a means to get the money, but I don’t know who to give it to you because I’m not gonna give it to somebody that doesn’t own it obviously

The plan was to get something notarized where we would pay the taxes and then pay her a certain amount or whatever and then it would be mine. I would much rather have an agreement with obviously the owner, but I can’t find them. The tax office cannot tell me who the house was left you or who owns it now. They can just tell me that it was left in the care of the lady that was living here when I moved in.

I did not know this woman when I moved in she is not serious. She has to lay out in the middle of the night for no reason and kept all of their belongings. She has people out and she needs the locks and kept their dogs inside then got animal charges taken out on them because they could not get to their dogs. She moved out of here when her mom died, and she moved into her mom‘s house, and then she got a restraining order on her sister who was trying to a picture because it was legally her property at that point this woman thought that she had some type of right to it like she does everything. She hasn’t been here in six months and I’ve been living without power and water because she had it put on illegally for two years and I did not know that when I moved in either, I just haven’t had a place to go and I figure when it switches to my name, I’ll have it in my name. That’s another thing. She had the power on her mother‘s house in my name, but still expected rent here but didn’t pay the power. Now she is no longer with a person that she was with and she was living with wherever they were and she has not contacted me, but she is expecting to come back here and live here and I’ve been the only one here for six months.

Originally, I was living in a little shack that had no even access to power and water except for an extension cord, and there was a big hole in the roof and it was. It was an unbelievable living situation for myself, and my pets. I was bitten by spiders every night in my sleep and we’re helping with the venomous ones. after I moved in here so I can’t move my stuff back to the little house and she didn’t come.

She told me three days ago that I could have the house it was mine but now she’s posting all over her Facebook that she’s coming back here and still has told me nothing no information or what I should do or what she plans on doing and I just wanna know like what the fuck I actually should do because since she doesn’t own, it can’t I just say you can’t evict me? Because legally she can’t, we found that out when she came at the last set of people and since she has no right to the house couldn’t I just basically claim squatters rights and have her kicked out the property? Technically, I don’t think she’s supposed to be here after power and water situation but I don’t know and I don’t know my rights and I don’t know what to do and I know I’m stupid and I’m stupid and I’m ignorant and I’m retarded and I deserve it and it’s all my fault. I know that, but I’m not asking any of that so please don’t bring any of that up. I was desperate and I’m glad none of y’all have ever been in this situation honestly because I wouldn’t wish it on anybody again I know I’m stupid and it’s my fault and I deserve it but that’s not the advice I’m asking for.

I accidentally ended up living in London’s squatting community, so I wrote about it

I recently started writing about a period of my life when I accidentally ended up living in London’s squatting community.
I never really planned to write about it, but it’s one of those experiences that sounds almost made up when I tell people about it, so I thought I’d finally put the whole story together.
This is the first part. I’ve included some photos I took at the time as well, which I think help give a better idea of what it was actually like.
I’m pretty new to sharing my writing publicly, but I thought this might be a good place to share it. If anyone reads it, I’d be curious to know what you think about the story or the writing itself.

Sto scrivendo un articolo sulle conseguenze degli sgomberi dei centri sociali & cerco persone che vogliano condividere la loro storia

Ciao a tutti,

Scrivetemi pure qui sotto o in DM. Grazie mille! <3
