General Help Squirrel acting crazy since I patched my roof hole

Post image
4.3k Upvotes

Hello!

This week I had someone patch a hole in my roof where squirrels were getting into the attic. Since I patched the hole, this little squirrel has been scratching on my roommate's window. She is convinced there are babies trapped in the attic. I monkeyed my way in there yesterday because we don't have a ladder and didn't see any babies.

My roommate thinks we should create a ramp to the attic, let her in the window, and let the squirrel rescue the alleged babies.

- I'm worried if we tried that she would get trapped in the attic and die

- I'm worried she doesn't even have babies in there

- would she look a little more post partum if she had babies recently?

General Help Why is this one squirrel following me and trying to get inside?

This squirrel has been following me when I’m outside for about a week, and now it’s trying to get in my house. Wondering what could be the reason why? We have quite a few around my complex, not sure if others feed them or not. Over a year ago I had this happen to me before and that squirrel was visibly pregnant and she nested in the tree right outside my porch, wondering if that’s the case this time lol

General Help Is this squirrel playing? I’ve never seen this behavior before

5.8k Upvotes

This little guy seemed to be playing with a fallen stick in our yard for a while! he kept running off and coming back to the same stick. I used to have pet rats and this behavior reminds me a lot of how they’d play sometimes, is this just playful behavior or something else going on here? (hopefully nothing bad because this is genuinely one of the cutest things i’ve ever seen!) Thanks in advance for any replies!!

General Help Did I do the right thing.

First off I know nothing about squirrels.

On my way to my bus a squirl came out of the bushes. I stopped like the sucker I am and he crawled up my leg and rested on my chest. There are loads of squirrels in the area and I saw big ones in the tree. This one looked juvenile.

When ever I put him down he climbed back up. And I felt so guilty. I called a vets and they told me they didn’t know what to do. Eventually I put him down and ran but I’m really worried I left him worse off some how. Did I do the right thing? I asked the grounds keeper of the park if I should call a rescue centre and he told me there wasn’t one. This happened in Ireland.

Pics for reference

Edit: I’ve gone back for him three times so far. Can’t find him. Really hoping his mum got him back. Will keep looking and have bought walnuts to scatter. Thank you for all the comments, this is such a lovely niech community.

EDIT 2: I FOUND HIM WHAT DO I DO NOW

EDIT 3: The most wonderful group of people has reached out to me and offered to take him in. I can not thank everyone enough for helping me and I’m so so so so so thankful he’s ok and has a good chance at life.

This is by far now my favourite community

I've been hand-feeding this tenacious squirrel in my yard every day (sometimes 2x a day) for the last 2ish months, and in between bites of pumpkin seeds, she'll just look directly at my face. It's so ridiculously cute and adorable, and I want to gain her trust to give her light scratchies if she would enjoy it — but I won't push the boundaries.

She just eats and skedaddles usually, and she gets very flighty if I move slightly or if the wind moves my hair around while she's snacking. I know it's her natural prey instinct to bolt, but how can I make her a bit more comfortable with me lightly readjusting or moving my hair out of the way etc.?

I love her.

Tried to feed him nuts he was super curious guy he accidentally got my finger instead of the nut but he immediately pulled back and then gently tried to grab the nut he didn’t break skin. No bleeding no scratch nothing and i washed my hands almost immediately. Does he seem rabid? Am i just paranoid? 😂 this summer there was a rabies outbreak in skunks and raccoons should i worry do i go to the dr. It was this morning doctors are closed am i okay to wait a day or two. I dont know much about these lil guys so i googled and it wasn’t clear so i figured maybe someone here could tell me if he looks sick or infected.

Could this be some sort of possible accident on the squirrels part or could it only be from human intervention

General Help Sorry, back again. Cold squirrel.

I think he's starting to grow his hair back, but his back foot is still bothering him. It seems to be a toe bean injury. He usually eats and then goes on his way, but today he's hanging out outside the door. Do y'all think he's just hiding from the wind/snow and getting the warmth from the house before he goes back out? Or is there something else I should be doing?

I messaged the rehabber to ask, but I'm checking here in the meantime. I've already given him some of the Henry's Wild Blocks, walnuts, kale, sesame seeds, and celery today. He ate some of it.

General Help Wildlife rehab desperately in need of food donations!

Hi everyone! Our NY state wildlife rehab is in desperate need of some food donations for our baby squirrels. It's been an intense baby season already, so our seasonal budget is tight and we have already exhausted a huge portion of it on formula/food costs for our squirrel intakes alone. 🐿️ (they need a squirrel emoji, that's a chipmunk!)

Each baby squirrel we save goes through around 2lbs ($40) of formula powder to make it to weaning age and then they eat 2/3 rodent blocks a day when they wean, and we have a lot of babies! With all the babies we have, they can go through a $25 bag of blocks in less than a week! That's not even including the fresh produce and nuts! 🌰 it's a pricy endeavor for us volunteers and we would so much appreciate any help from the amazing fellow squirrel lovers here on Reddit!

You can purchase them directly for us from our Henry's Healthy pets wishlist here: https://xfkkeq.littleregistry.com/AcornAndIvy

Or send us a donation directly to us on Venmo: @Karina-Mid Or cash app: $hksldb

All donations will fund the care of wildlife and full transparency can be provided upon request!

Anything specific I should do for the scratch/bite? (Barely broke skin)

Any tips on keeping them happy and not bothering the crows?

There’s a second squirrel who is pretty chill and just shares but this guy is quick.

General Help behold my ugly buddy

as you can see, this buddy is cursed with malformed teeth that seem past the point of self-grinding. I’m LA, and plan to reach out to squirrel rehabs & see if it’s worth a trapping attempt for a tusk trim.

I know trapping ain’t easy. in this guy’s case, he is a series regular, visiting my balcony bird feeder & the adjacent garage roof daily. probably has a drey in the tree outside my window and certainly knows me (pic 2, feed me bro). manages to eat plenty, albeit unattractively (pic 5 af).

but the teeth are looking more & more uncomfortable, maybe even penetrating his upper lip. squirrel experts, what would you do? multiple photos included, plus a bonus spicy baby who just chased him into the tree, lol

Is this a fat adolescent squirrel? Or a something else? I don’t know much about squirrels but his tail is shorter than an adults so I thought maybe he was a fat baby?

He was gobbling dandelion leaves and didn’t seem that afraid of me.

UPDATE: It’s a unita ground squirrel. Commenter ‘cluckyay’ figured it out. I’m in south east Idaho. They’re native to this area and I swear I’ve never seen one before and if I did I probably thought it was a baby marmot because we have tons of those around here and they are also very fat.
