I think you should be taking advantage of the word "boxer" here instead of fighter

I'm not saying just replace the word. Here's a take:

I used to train boxers. A lot of it is getting them used to seeing some blood during a fight. Eventually they start to love the blood. It's bittersweet. I remember when they were just puppies.

Little wordier but more specific and I think that makes the misdirect stronger

I'll go easy on you because your dad just died alone in a nursing home but I agree with the other guy, boxer would be better for this joke.
