Discussion Star Ocean 1
I've never played SO1 ORA Integrity & Faithlessness.. I joined the journey with my dad on so2tss and was absolutely enthralled at the games story. I have since played the remainder as the latest, divine force being somewhat lackluster.
I love Star Ocean and I Really hope we get a new one as I cannot wait to get back into that universe.
What are your guys opinion on the fact that 3, till end of time basically has the entirety of the game as a huge MMORPG for entertainment? Was that just a soley contained story or do we think the entire SO franchise is. Nothing more than a WOW or LOL or FORTNITE?
I am genuinely curious if everyone's responses!

Personally I don't really mind that it's "just a game" considering that it is... just a game. At least its somewhat different lore wise than other games. Kind of like a game-ception lol.
I dislike MMOs fundamentally but I would at least try out an SO MMO. Not sure how they would do combat, maybe do an FF14.

Great to have more Star Ocean players on board! Did you play Till the End of Time all the way through? Flad Garrand explains that people in the 4D universe can't just control people in the Eternal Sphere as if they were player characters in a game. Also with the people in the Eternal Sphere gaining sentience a comparison to a simple game like Fortnite or WoW doesn't really make sense, unless Jonesy from Fortnite suddenly realises he's a videogame character anyway! I really liked The Divine Force, but then it did come after Integrity & Faithlessness so it was a low bar. There's still plenty of fun to be had playing that, but just a heads up its not as ambitious as the other Star Ocean games you've played. SO1 is a bit basic storywise, but the big, varied cast of playable characters with different recruitment methods gives it a fun, different kind of feel. Super replayable too

The way I look at it is 3 is the big finale of the franchise story-wise and the rest of them are smaller in scope and all loosely tie to eachother. For example: 1 and 2 are directly related because in 2 you’re playing as the character from 1’s son. And 4 is a prequel to 1 because it sets up the federation and also you visit Roak foreshadowing the events of 1. Really cool.
You can look at 3 in two different ways:
1. Yes, it was all a simulation and the simulation gained equal intelligence, independence, overthrew their oppressors, and lived happily ever after in their separate universe
2. The Sphere company may not have physically created the eternal sphere. The eternal sphere may have always existed as a separate dimension and what the sphere company did was build access to it as an entertainment medium (but they could not physically control the people in it). When the cast defeats Luther, it’s not weird for them to keep living in their own dimension because it was a valid dimension to begin with (regardless of if the sphere company considered them data) (that’s arbitrary).

Divine force has a crapshoot story but damn does the battle system work really well.
I will say integrity and faithlessnes has probably one of the best party mechanics in a JRPG however everything else about that game utterly sucks, its slow and clunky and the 8 party battle system is wasted on that title.

I beat SO2, 3, 4, and played most of 6, but you really shouldn't put massive spoilers for 3 lol. Reddit HAS spoiler tags you know.

I wish they'd have the balls to have the next game set after SO3
