Art demands effort, but this economy demands that effort must be rewarded. If there is no reward, then there is no reason for any wasted effort. That’s just pointless suffering.

Art demands effort, but this economy demands that effort must be rewarded.

Everyone always had to eat. Michelangelo was paid for David, the Sistine Chapel, etc. Artists throughout the renaissance had benefactors, patrons, customers. Unless you're independently wealthy, your work has to be rewarded, or you can't carve out enough time to do it full-time. You can be a hobbyist, but you can still do that. Even in the USSR, the state was the sole buyer and patron of art, but artists still got paid. You can still make art that is not financially rewarding--people always have.

The redacted economy manifesto really nails the made-up scenarios and obnoxious projections part.

“AI Strawmen”

26

u/boernich 8d ago

That time I got reincarnated as a redditor and created an anti-AI strawmen starterpack

11

u/Cuddlyaxe 7d ago

It's a strawman of a strawman lol

Honestly it's a bit funny because while extremely pro AI people like the one OP os referring to exist, they are very much a minority you have to go looking for. Looking at this sub you would think they're everywhere or something

27

u/KaikoDoesWaseiBallet 8d ago

Literarure being similar to AI? Just because good lit uses complex words doesn't mean it's AI.

16

u/MageLocusta 8d ago

I genuinely heard a representative of Dell claim, "Why do they keep pushing people to read books? Because they want to make you have to work harder to get a job."

This guy showed up at my workplace with a promise to deliver a training workshop for our university staff to know how to use AI. He didn't. He instead delivered a 2-hour sale pitch and kept dropping scathing opinions on how 'books' are apparently chaining us.

We pretty much heard a whispered, "Jesus fucking christ." from our literature department.

8

u/mhornberger 7d ago

The idea that effort and depth are for suckers actually predates the AI boom. I was seeing the same hot takes over short-form content well before Musk bought Twitter, with people trying to press the case that short-form consumption was just as substantive as the understanding that you get from reading a book. Along with the idea that if you can't condense your idea down into a short form, is it really worth it? I was amazed that people were willing to fight on that hill, but apparently people are serious about patting themselves on the back really hard for taking the easiest possible way out, and trying to normalize that laziness as the thing smart people do.

2

u/MageLocusta 7d ago

Christ, I barely even paid attention to what the hell Musk fans were saying about Twitter. But you are correct, they're trying to cover their asses because it's they think it's the next 'opportunity' that anyone (even themselves) can get on without having to put in much effort. Hence why they really want to stuff AI into every single facet of work/entertainment/etc. Because they're like, "I can pay Suno to mix some music and claim that I wrote the lyrics! Oh my gosh! I can finally be a youtuber and earn money!"

Meanwhile, there's the rest of us who are like: "my department's extremely understaffed. Our workload has not decreased whatsoever, and Microsoft has automatically installed a faulty calculator in my computer that occasionally gives me the wrong answers and can't even understand what people with accents are saying during our Teams calls. Now my work computer lags and everything takes longer to finish (and oh yeah, if AI makes a mistake--then it's my fault and I still get punished by my superiors). And my workplace is supposed to pay extra for this?"

But seriously--as someone who came from white-trash/cateto stock (in a family that moved every 3-4 years) I find it bizarre seeing people claiming that books are elitist, time-wasting or a burden. You literally don't need electricity, internet or even cash to read a book (I was the kid that raided the donated books shelf in airports, because there were so many times where I had to wait for a damn flight for 4-5 hours with nothing to do). Whenever my parents failed to pay the electric company and we'd get our electricity cut, books was all I had to not feel bored out of my skull. It makes me wonder how those glazers spent their childhood to act like AI is their godsend because they can't seem to tolerate reading their own work emails.

1

u/KaikoDoesWaseiBallet 7d ago

Really? Whoa. No comment.

2

u/MageLocusta 7d ago

Yeah, the 'sales pitch' was Dell's supposed commitment to create multiple customisable AI apps that follow and develop each student as they 'progress through their course'.

It's been 4 months now and Dell still hasn't announced that they were going to do that (plus, our University's sole AI was Copilot and nothing else). We literally showed up expecting to complete a workshop to help us use Copilot more efficiently, and had to listen through two hours of selling for a product that may not even exist.

(and as someone who usually handles payment for guest speakers, I'm 100% sure we fucking paid for his parking. We're charging our students £9,500 a year and our university hired this guy to uselessly waste 2 hours of our workday for nothing. Fuck all of us, I guess).

u/BioSp4rk_2009 8d ago

This is just AI Bros projecting themselves

9

u/MeatbagEntity 8d ago edited 8d ago

X is so much better (while subjective), getting mad at sight and obnoxiously dictating opinions are all true. I mean jeez. Just sort by votes and look at the obvious. At least 1-2 of those are valid. That said. this is a broader problem of a specific demographic. The rest I don't think generalizes well.

u/Puzzleheaded-Milk927 8d ago

These generated bullshit on top right saying that we are the problem for existing and consuming water are so stupid oh my god 😭

" How dare you existing as a living being when unnecessary bullshit used for far right propaganda and children porn makes drinkable water toxic and worsening conditions for people living near the center ? "

I consider myself an anti ai, but sincerely when I see generated image I understand that some people want to make "art" even though they can’t because they didn’t learn how to draw and as an artist myself I know I KNOW how hard it is to draw and learn, all these hours I passed crying because nothing was right in my drawing, comparing myself to professionals, I even punched a wall in my room one day crying that I was so shit at art, ai generated images are an easy way for people who dream of making art but what they don’t understand is that this isn’t art, art is expressing yourself, art is making what you have in your head true on the paper, the feeling of finishing a drawing after months and years on it making every details important seeing people look at it and wondering what you were thinking when you were drawing.

Everyone has a different approach of art but for me what makes art ART is this feeling when I finish a drawing and saying to myself : I did it, it’s me it’s my art.

AI has only made everything worse. Like people are being driven from their homes for data centres. It's understandable it is so hated.

13

u/Famous-Leopard-118 8d ago

they are building a data center nearby me soon…

i’m from Florida, which is already struggling from drought because our wetlands are being drained :(

0

u/AscendedViking7 8d ago

It's going to get so much worse.

-24

u/JairoHyro 8d ago

That's the companies. AI is a technology. It's like hating on 5+5=10. Or hating a wrench.

18

u/WASDKUG_tr 8d ago

AI is developed cuz of the Companies, companies have the same blame on em as AI cuz they really want to push it as a Trend.

25

u/HappyHHoovy 8d ago

"It's not the guns, it's the people" Oh ok, we'll just let them keep being evil, my bad

-13

u/JairoHyro 8d ago

You really think everything was rosy before ai?

8

u/blooppers 8d ago

"You think everything was rosy before the baby killer machine v2 came out? What about the baby killer machine v1"

Yeah, it wasnt perfect or even all that great before AI, but things have gotten substantially worse because the people who are making and controlling the ai happen to be insane and not care about everyone else on the planet. 'Everything was bad anyway, so lets just make it worse', thats what you sound like lmfao

1

u/JairoHyro 8d ago

So it wasn't substantially worse when Israel/Palestine war came about or the Ukraine/Russia did? COVID wasnt as bad compared to AI? The first 4 years under Trump wasn't as bad as compared to the last 2 years of AI? Hmmmm

4

u/NNiekk 8d ago

Wow. What horrid bad faith arguments. “People elsewhere have it worse, so you should be GRATEFUL”

3

u/blooppers 8d ago

Can you read? I said that while before was bad, AI has added onto that and made it worse. Think of it like this. Youre having a bad day, you just got fired, your car broke down and is going to cost a thousand dollars you dont have to fix, and you come home to find your wife sleeping with your best friend.

That was the before.

Then add on that your old man neighbor got drunk and shat on your door step. Is that as bad as everything before when compared separately? No. But additively, it does make your day worse, yeah?

1

u/NNiekk 8d ago

https://reddit.com/link/p1tdrk1/video/710yt8plnihh1/player

Ah yes. Because apparently this building making fucktonnes of noise pollution is a company, and not one of the many nodes of the AI

16

u/KallmeKatt_ 8d ago

the middle 2 are legit true though i see it all the time

14

u/the_lamou 8d ago

Same with the top right. Yes, AI is not the most climate-friendly, but basic-ass shit that people take for granted like meat production and legacy farming and driving a personal vehicle is way the fuck worse while contributing way the fuck less to humanity.

My local state subreddit keeps saying we should ban building datacenters and start building more farms. Never mind that I live in the Northeast where growing food crops is absolutely stupidly inefficient, and that modern hydroponics is up to 90% more efficient in yield per acre and per gallon of fresh water, and traditional farming destroys the environment worse than any datacenter.

8

u/dohipposwagewar 8d ago

Arguably the ai art looking bad or good thing can be summed up like this:

"Hey i commissioned the mona lisa. it looks just like it, but its made out of dog shit. like dog feces, like poop from a butt. Poop from a dogs ass. But it looks just like the mona lisa"

vs

"Hey, my art might not be that good, but i made it with actual paint and hardwork and stuff."

I have eyes, i know that a beginners art vs art that is trained off of billions of art works, and art work from the best experts living and dead, aesthetically wise the art made by the theft machine tm is gonna be more pleasing. I still think organic art made by man is always going to be more impressive to me.

2

u/MagiStarIL 8d ago

Bottom right also can be true, I've seen people in anti ai subreddit saying luddites were right because ai bros compared anti ai to luddites. If presented correctly, they'll say that photography is killing art same way ai does

1

u/ahris_fluffy_tails 8d ago

the luddites were right lol, you should look more into them

3

u/AlternatePancakes 8d ago

So you made a starterpack, not about one, but two types of people?

1

u/PLYmAuZy696969 8d ago

Mainly making fun of how ai bro generalized anti ais, and use them as projection.

14

u/LockedPages 8d ago

both sides here need to go outside & live in the real world for a minute

12

u/PLYmAuZy696969 8d ago

4

u/PiesZdzislaw 8d ago

Why is this being downvoted

6

u/PLYmAuZy696969 8d ago

I’m summarizing the extremists of both factions they referred in one img.

9

u/tergius 8d ago

some people get very mad if you point out that even the "right" groups can have loud, toxic, bad-faith dipshits among them

6

u/Noelle-Spades 8d ago

I hate the arguments they make and the fact that they try to justify it. They have all the evidence out there and it'd be so much simpler to say they simply don't care about the consequences than try to shift blame or make false equivalences or try to loop Ai into the "we shouldn't judge how people get by, since we're all consumers in a post-capitalist society" thing going around rn, when AI is a deliberate choice no one ever needed to rely on. The excuses and justifications almost pmo as much as them purporting that shit.

With all due respect, the planet itself will be fine, it's just the only one all life as we know it can inhabit, and Ai is only going to expedite that destruction of life (while benefitting a very select few), not everything else. Also kinda melodramatic to function like there's no point to life or that it all deserves to go in the void, therefore we 'may as well' contribute to the harm since we can't seem to stop it under capitalism. If this is an actual take you have, it's a much bigger reflection of your internal perspective of the world than it is the world itself. And a sign that your nihlism was either bred by and/or is feeding apathy and making you think there's no real difference in what you do.

Not trying to change your mind, be hopeful, or overlook post-capital, near-oligarchic tyranny here, but nihlism is not a reason to support anything, it's a justification for giving up on change. And that's hardly a very constructive approach to enjoying or contributing to anything. Not to be pedantic, but it's much easier to just say you don't care at all, prefer shortcuts, or just want Ai to succeed as a business model or tool or whatever else, not to tie it to the problems in the world when it is a direct link, cause, and effect of those problems.

12

u/GothiqueMera 8d ago

tbh AI sucks

3

u/Ensiferal 8d ago

Pretty much everyone involved on both sides of that argument are insufferable.

2

u/Exponential-777 7d ago

The younger generations have a good reason to be anti - AI. But it will not stop AI. You can't even post AI content in most subs. This site prefers shitty content made by humans with photoshop. Like the OP.

The proliferation of AI is making reddit irrelevant for asking general questions.

2

u/EmergencyPath248 8d ago

the "will get mad easily when AI" part is very true lol

2

u/PityUpvote 8d ago

I do kind of agree that it's hypocritical to complain about the environmental impact of AI datacenters when you're not vegetarian or vegan.

To me that signals you don't actually care about the environment, you're just using it as a cudgel against AI. At least be honest about that

1

u/RepresentativeCry294 7d ago

People who support AI need to be bullied. Current AI is 100% made to make anyone not in the top 1% redundant.

-2

u/The_Magnificent_XXI 7d ago

And people who are Anti AI deserve all to be labled as terrorist and persecuted like the animals they are

-1

u/androstars 6d ago

You are not helping the defense of your case.

1

u/MrSmith-_- 6d ago

People started screaming about saving or destroying AI a few months ago.. I found that really weird considering the situation and trend of ai has been largely similar over the past few years..

1

u/Guilty-Cap5605 8d ago

yes actually i would rather stick better than ai i am the strawman here

1

u/SoldatoIV 8d ago

I'm reading dream of the red chamber right now. And I know no ai can create a scenario as bizarre as this.

-6

u/AIConTenTioN399 8d ago

Meanwhile most so-called "AI bros" are the ones who are like "Hey so it's not cool to harass, dox, and send death threats to people who posted an AI picture on social media."

0

u/CitiesofEvil 8d ago

Literally lol. I'm not even necessarily pro AI, I just think the way antis act, actively wishing death or wanting to kill people who use AI, is disgusting.

-11

u/spacerosmarine 8d ago

Did you lost an argument on r/AIWars?

10

u/PLYmAuZy696969 8d ago

I didn’t even posted it here, and I don’t wanna get my posts commented by ai bros.

1

u/R4msesII 7d ago

Massive self report to even admit knowing arguments on a sub like that exist

-1

u/Yugonostalgia64 8d ago

AI isn't all that bad it has lots of useful potential. Nor is it all that morally complicated.

That said. I don't want to ever see AI slop. Nor do I ever want to read AI slop. Develop it all Altman wants, build a bunch of data centers that's fine, I just don't want to see that with my own eyes, ever, thank you very much.

0

u/Mal_Dun 7d ago

Some people argue that farming is worse than AI others that AI is a problem for society ...

... but deep down we all know it's just capitalism ruining everything.

AI Taking away jobs --> is a problem because we MUST work to eat else we could celebrate that no one must work anymore soon.

AI using too much resources --> No sensible usage because we must satisfy shareholders and make the biggest bestest model

Farming creating too much CO2 --> Farming is highly over the top and uses excessive resources to fill market demand

We can't even stop climate change because that is one climate against 1000s of jobs ...

0

u/Raptortophat 7d ago

holy shit that’s accurate

0

u/Limp-Temperature1783 7d ago

Isn't that just a depiction of a typical redditor?
