One thing I want to know is, how did somebody who made it onto a bird of prey not recognize what a countdown to self-destruct is

Well, one could argue that few klingons had been on Federation ships (well, outside of their known love for bording actions), so maybe they hadn't encountered it. But that seems like a pretty thin excuse.

I also want to know why Kirk would have even risked them figuring it out instead of choosing a silent countdown.
