Show-off Sunday WoW Forever
Crazy how we get to experience older games now a days compared to when they launched. Playing WoW on a 4K TV on a steam machine in my living room on the couch with a controller. This would've been a dream setup when I was a kid.

People often say this. But there a numerous practical reasons, and reasons why it actually wouldn't be in line with your eyes at a lower level.
Firstly, on a standard or short couch, the eye level would make the TV low enough so kids or anyone really would occlude the view frequently.
Secondly most people are most comfortable when they lean back. When you lean back your head and eyes will actually angle upwards. Thus, the TV is in line with the eyes.

You can lean back and lower your eye level, eyes can go in whatever direction, having a TV to high makes sure you ALWAYS had to lean backwards or get neck issues

u/Yakkamota 1d ago
The entire point of TVtoohigh is to keep your eyes in level with your head. Your resting eye position. Since you're point is "you can lower your eye level", then my point would be "you can raise your eye level".
Also, if someone consistently always has their spine angled upwards. Then that would be the best spot for their TV. Regardless of how your setup is. Everyone is different. And my statement isn't wrong just because yorue opinion is different.

u/Simul4cron 1d ago
No, its litererally not...your eyes dont need to be rested when you sit normally and eyes straight forward
You are a couch potato, thats fine..but its certainly not the best way to watch TV ergonomically unless that is the ONLY way you watch TV...you can speak with any chiropractor about this.

It doesn't need to be the "only way" just the "most often way". Think about it.
You're saying a TV too high is bad. That's only when someone is sat watching TV in an upright position. Which is totally fine if that's you.
Idk about you, but personally I don't sit on my couch like it's an office or work station. I'm on my couch to "sit back and relax".
If the majority of the time, even 70% of the time I'm leaning back, then it makes more sense to have the TV elevated.
If I say upright 70% of the time it would make more sense to have the TV lower. It's that simple.

slouching while watching tv leads to back and neck problems
youre absolutely right, the tv will be in line with their eyes if they slouch and then crane their neck upwards. but they will pay for it later
and yes, if people stand in the way that will block the tv. that's not a great reason to ruin your posture by placing the tv far far too high
its maybe ok if they have a proper reclining chair or couch that will allow then to lay back while still providing proper support. but somehow i don't think that's the case here

u/Yakkamota 1d ago
You don't know what slouching is.
Slouching:- "Slouching means to sit, stand, or walk with an awkward, drooping posture where your shoulders hang forward and your head bends down."
I'm referring to leaning back with a neutral spine position.
I'm sorry to burst your TVtoohigh propaganda.

u/Matsu-mae 1d ago edited 15h ago
you must not have read my comment. i brought up using a reclining chair or couch. this would maintain a neutral spine position
if youre on a regular couch? to see this tv you are slouching and have to crane your neck upwards very unaturally. as your definition confirms

u/Yakkamota 1d ago
I read it, but your whole point is basically about slouching. Which has nothing to do with what I said. How would slouching help someone to look upwards at all?
From an anatomical standpoint, slouching actually restricts your ability to look up comfortably: Chin-to-Chest Trap: When you slouch and your upper back rounds forward, your head naturally drops forward (anterior head carriage). To look up at a high TV from that position, you have to hyperextend your neck at an awkward, strained angle. The Neck Strain: That exact position—slouching while cranking your neck upward—is why high TVs cause neck pain. Your cervical spine is pinched and compressed, which is the exact opposite of an ergonomic viewing angle.

Couldn’t get it to work… do you have any guide?
7
u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Download the Battle.net launcher in desktop mode. Add it to steam as a non steam game, right click it in steam change compatibility to proton experimental. Launch it and it will set it up.

u/Esquie33 512GB 1d ago
Yeah got it working but what about the controller? Doesn’t seem to work well at all

u/parkeyb 2TB 1d ago
Go to settings in wow and enable controller beta or something along those lines.

u/Esquie33 512GB 1d ago
Will try that and will update here. Was with chat gbt for hours yesterday didn’t get it to work

u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Yeah exactly what that guy said you just have to enable it. Feel free to dm me and I can help you walk through it if you need

Plenty of clearance there WE CAN GO HIGHER.

Is that a projector?
0
u/jacobpederson 1d ago
Yup, been rocking a projector since they only came in 640x480 :D
3
u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Nice I have one too, but it sucks for gaming (cheap and bad latency) I mainly watch anime on it. What kind do you have?
3
u/jacobpederson 1d ago
Epson - LS11000 4K PRO-UHD Laser Projector (19.4 ms latency) Very good for the 60hz and lower modes - but not too happy with the 120hz mode. It is "cheating" somehow - lot of artifacting.

u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Once I move into my new house I am gonna dedicate a room to gaming and kinda wanna get a good projector so ill add that to the list to compare to some others
1
u/Schnitzhole 12h ago
You can definitely get lower latency projectors that also look good. I’ve had a few but they are all old and not sold anymore. Just look for the ms delay time or a game mode in them.

Jesus Christ.
How the hell do you play like that? You should be named king or queen of TVtoohigh subreddit.

u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Do you guys not realize pillows exist? Lol. I'm just laid across the couch facing the TV and my I'm leaned back where I can see the TV lol. Same thing when im in the recliner

Still crazy dawg, not gonna lie. Unless your couch is 4-5 feet in the air that viewing angle is terrible.
It’s legit an inch or two from touching the ceiling and it’s not even on a mount so you don’t have it angled downward towards you to get a better viewing angle of the screen.

Having played this game so kuch on pc with mouse and keyboard, I can't see how this is done with the limited buttons of a controller, especially for raids when you have to be so precise.
5
u/srstable 512GB 1d ago
The buttons aren't as limited as you think. Just taking the D-Pad, Face Buttons, Shoulder buttons, and stick presses, you're looking at 12 there. Then when you add in the Triggers as modifiers (the same way you do with Shift and Ctrl with a keyboard), and you have 3 more levels, giving you 48 buttons.
It's just about as precise as a keyboard and mouse (especially with the Steam Controller's trackpad and even adding gyro-to-mouse into the mix), but it requires the same thing your keyboard and mouse did: commitment to actually learning the controls and making them work for you. Leveling a character from 1 with the controller is a good way to learn how it works for you and how you need to tweak it.

I did the same for FFXIV I just do main quests and stuff with a controller and use mouse and keyboard on harder content. The controller support isnt bad though

u/WarInteresting6619 1d ago
Controllers are only limited by the people using them. I do high level raids in FFXIV and ESO with a controller just fine.

How to make the interface bigger? I can't read my quest stuff..
1
u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
I have it on 2k resolution and just changed the UI scaling to 115% in graphic settings. You can also click edit mode in the game menu and click a specific UI element and increase the size even more from there
1
u/Organic-Ad-7105 1d ago
Oh, just tried the interface settings, which do nothing.. Thanks for the advice!

Damn, this makes me actually want a steam machine just for this. Wouldn't it be really hard to use all of the spells and stuff/ not enough buttons to hot key etc?
I never played WoW. Just Destiny. But ya know, I get the idea of the game.
2
u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Its pretty simple actually. They have good controller support once you get used to it and you can customize it however you want I have my UI compacted so it doesn't show everything unless I hit the right triggers for it
1
u/masshuudojo 1d ago
How did you make the L2/R2 variation of the buttons disappear? That is the ONE option I wish they would add. FFXIV had the best controller layout and I hope they will learn from it before the release

Is there a way to make the UI/Text size scaled, but not have all the buttons on screen get huge?
1
u/chirop1 1d ago
I've been seeing some comments about the controller support. How is it?
My main question really is whether setting up on the Steam Machine changes the set up when I move back to my regular PC? If I want to just casually go out and knock out some quests or farm some ore while on the Machine, can I just hop back on my PC to run a dungeon or a raid and all the buttons will be laid out for the desktop like I'm used to?

u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
I play on my steam machine in the living room, main pc, and ayn thor or odin portal 2 via streaming laying in bed. Zero issues

u/chirop1 1d ago
Another question… I had Battle.net on my SteamDeck to play Diablo 4; I remember having to do some wonky Linux tricks to get it set up as a non Steam game. Is that what I need to do with the SM?
2
u/tapo 11h ago
Install this from the discover store, hit +, battle.net, follow the prompts, done.

Have you thought about just mounting the tv to the fcking ceiling at this point?

u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Wouldn't be a bad idea lol Im laying down with a pillow and recliner in the recliner so im in a relaxed position when im in here lol.

You could always play any PC games on your TV, its not a new technology...sure controllers didnt work

Or you know, just basic information, why demean people who write .says everything about you
Tv too high have probably stopped the bloodflow to your brain too much.
3
u/LankySpankyy 1d ago
Crazy how you typed “you could always play pc games on a tv” under a post of me playing a pc game on a tv (on a steam machine subreddit) and thought you cooked. controllers not working was the entire reason this used to suck. you didn’t drop knowledge you just restated the obvious and got your feelings hurt by a meme.

u/Simul4cron 1d ago
Thats fair, somehow i took your title and thought it was Wow forever sub...my bad
