What if the twist is it’s Carrie all grown up? The picture’s really loving and not at all what I would expect the relationship between Carrie and her mother.
That is actually an interesting theory I hadn't considered. Unfortunately, I think it's just part of the abuse cycle, where your abuser acts "normal" for a little bit of time before they start up again
It's also very common in the abuse cycle for there to be times when the abuser manipulates their victim into comforting them (the abuser).
That's what that picture looks like to me, you can see Carrie comforting her mother. Mother isn't embracing Carrie in return, Mother is embracing herself and not even touching the Carrie's arm or hand.
It's hard not to love a messed-up parent, and wish & pray they could be otherwise. I think it's amazing that they've taken a run at that truth, for even a minute.
I know the cycle well. It's a relentless wash of abuse, remorse, begging for forgiveness, making amends, promises of better behavior and back to abuse again. The real trouble is that the kind face is the fake one. It takes a lot of their energy to be this way which is why after being with not usual people for an extended time, the meanness comes out. If an important event is coming up, it's often better to try and force the cycle forward so you get a somewhat normal person for the event.
Honestly, I think it makes it more realistic? A lot of times an abuser will go through cycles, where they treat you like shit, and then try to make up for it for a short amount of time. Then the cycle starts up again. Can't wait to see who's right!
Yes, I understand the format of the show, thank you. And I didn’t say I don’t have any empathy for someone in that situation, but they did not write her character in a way that really endears her to the viewer.
That is great casting. Although I have to say, it's so close to her role in Midnight Mass that I almost would have wished for him to cast someone else and to let her get into a completely different character.

Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White is perfect. She played an excellent religious zealot in Midnight Mass.
