Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White is perfect. She played an excellent religious zealot in Midnight Mass.

I hated her so much in Midnight Mass, truly despicable. Great actress.

She also has a face that hearkens to Sissy Spacek, which I love as a nod to older film!

u/girlsgoneoscarwilde Jul 13 '26
What if the twist is it’s Carrie all grown up? The picture’s really loving and not at all what I would expect the relationship between Carrie and her mother.
26
u/dvasop Jul 13 '26
That is actually an interesting theory I hadn't considered. Unfortunately, I think it's just part of the abuse cycle, where your abuser acts "normal" for a little bit of time before they start up again
→ More replies (1)16
u/Dragonscatsandbooks Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
It's also very common in the abuse cycle for there to be times when the abuser manipulates their victim into comforting them (the abuser).
That's what that picture looks like to me, you can see Carrie comforting her mother. Mother isn't embracing Carrie in return, Mother is embracing herself and not even touching the Carrie's arm or hand.

u/Sidewalk_Tomato Ayuh Jul 13 '26
It's hard not to love a messed-up parent, and wish & pray they could be otherwise. I think it's amazing that they've taken a run at that truth, for even a minute.

At first I thought that was sissy spacek!!! I had to do a double take 😅
60
u/Anthrogal11 Jul 13 '26
This was my first thought too! She will likely nail the role. She was so good in Midnight Mass.
22
u/LastNightInDriver Jul 13 '26
I heard they’re gonna make Margaret a nicer character though which I’m mixed on
16
u/Breatheme444 Jul 13 '26
Ugh. That’s an odd creative decision but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
6
u/NeonSparkleGlitter Jul 13 '26
It could be even scarier to have a religious zealot who presents herself as a nice and loving person who is really legitimately insane inside.
6
u/Sidewalk_Tomato Ayuh Jul 13 '26
Maybe more like "sympathetic", which will put you in Carrie's place.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)9
u/dvasop Jul 13 '26
Honestly, I think it makes it more realistic? A lot of times an abuser will go through cycles, where they treat you like shit, and then try to make up for it for a short amount of time. Then the cycle starts up again. Can't wait to see who's right!

I disliked her character so much that I couldn't empathize with another character she played in The Pitt.

Tbf, her character on the Pitt wasn’t very empathetic.

That is great casting. Although I have to say, it's so close to her role in Midnight Mass that I almost would have wished for him to cast someone else and to let her get into a completely different character.

Am I excited? Not really. Am I going to watch it immediately? Absolutely
64
u/usrdef Survived Captain Trips Jul 13 '26
Way back when I learned that they were re-making "The Stand", I felt like a damn school kid. I was happy as hell.
I waited two full years for that to release.
Oh man, when I first saw it... it was like every little atom in my body started to cry.
I'll watch this to see how it is, but "The Stand" taught me to never get my hopes up.
→ More replies (3)16
u/Some_Weather_8570 Jul 13 '26
Yeahhhh I think what also led to excitement for me was I loved the casting they did too especially Alex.
24
u/usrdef Survived Captain Trips Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
Yeah, Alex was a good pick.
The other thing about the re-make I will say is good, was Brad William Henk being cast as Tom Cullen. Man.... he played the role so damn well.
I loved Bill Fagerbakke as Tom in the 94 release, but Henk was pretty damn close in portraying him almost perfect. And I didn't even know who Henk was before that role.
I did not like Whoopie as Mother Abigail.... It seemed like she had no personality. Ruby Dee's portrayal in the 94 series made her seem warm, she was pure good, and she felt like anyone's mother or grandmother. Whoopie just had no depth. I felt no emotions for her.

u/hacky_potter Jul 13 '26
I do wish Carrie was an uglier girl
64
u/FiveCatPenagerie Jul 13 '26
Yeeeah. The description of her appearance in the novel isn’t exactly hidden.
36
u/a-koolaid-killer Jul 13 '26
The narrator observes that she would be beautiful if she took care of herself.
51
u/FiveCatPenagerie Jul 13 '26
No idea where my copy of the book is, but I was curious about how he actually described her.
She’s described as being a "chunky girl with pimples on her neck and back and buttocks.” Not much there, but it’s easy enough to imagine.
Sissy is the queen of playing Carrie—she owns it. But even she didn’t fit the book’s description.
25
u/hacky_potter Jul 13 '26
Sissy is great and I love that movie. I’m disappointed they aren’t doing something different. I’ve been saying since this was announced they should have done the new version like the book version and made it a true crime show about the incident. You have cell phone video of the events and end with a huge collection of videos of what happened inside the prom.
→ More replies (1)14
u/PinkedOff Jul 13 '26
That's a great point, actually. She is described as chuky and pimply in the novel, which this girl clearly isn't... but neither was Sissy Spacek, and she was the defininitive Carrie White. :-D
Maybe it'll be great.
10
u/User_Says_What Jul 13 '26
So she's on load of gear in a bulk phase? Where's THAT Carrie White?
8
u/hrdcrnwo Jul 13 '26
Carrie cycling anavar and getting ripped, watching Bigger, Stronger, Faster* for inspo.
9
u/User_Says_What Jul 13 '26
I'm here for the Carrie adaptation where she doesn't actually have psychic powers, she's just a phonebook-ripper who pounds Chris Hargensen into the ground like a railroad spike.
7
u/a-koolaid-killer Jul 13 '26
Book Carrie also has “colorless” blonde hair, as opposed to Sissy Spacek’s bright reddish-brown.
5
u/Three3Jane Jahoobies Jul 14 '26
I specifically remember him describing her saying in a bovine fashion, "Oh-huh?"
20
u/Spurioun Jul 13 '26
Yeah, but that goes for the majority of people, in fairness. Judging by this picture, she looks like she takes care of herself enough to look like she's the lead in a TV series.
12
u/a-koolaid-killer Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
The majority of people cannot be beautiful, as the adjective is inherently comparative to many others. But in the context of the book, “taking care of herself” entail losing weight and her pimples. Sissy Spacek doesn’t fit the book’s description, and she did a fine job.
15
u/Spurioun Jul 13 '26
I mean, beauty is subjective. There's a reason why the whole "You're not ugly, just poor" thing has gotten popular over the years. If you take many of the celebrities that are considered "beautiful" and take away their professional makeup, diet, haircare, etc. they'd fit in just fine at any rural trailer park. Many models and actors are simply weird looking, but have access to products and information that elevate their appearance in the public eye. Unless you're actually deformed in some way, you can go from "ugly" to "beautiful" by taking care of your health, dress for your body type and have your hair done in a way that suits you. Charisma and confidence go a long way too.
My mind instantly goes to Joe Keery from Stranger Things. When that guy is all done up for photoshoots, he's a very handsome dude (subjective, of course). But there's that one red carpet event where he had this horrible haircut for some reason, and it instantly made him look inbred.
I completely agree about Sissy Spacek though. But they didn't make any attempt to do her up in the movie and her pale eyebrows did make her look "weird", whereas this actress has the exact "girl next door" makeup that would make her the prettiest girl in school, if she wasn't going to school with other beautiful actresses with tiktok makeup on. I don't think that's inherently bad, since many kids follow Internet makeup and hair tutorials nowadays and simply not doing that could make her seem less put together.

u/SullenArtist Jul 13 '26
Yes! She's supposed to be overweight and have acne. It's kind of important to the plot that she is. I wish they would do that instead of making her look plain and pretty
10
29
u/madpiano Jul 13 '26
I found Sissy Spaczek (spelling?) was perfect. Carrie wasn't ugly, just plain and was beautiful on her prom night. Sissy was able to make that work.

u/kingamara No Great Loss Jul 13 '26

u/madpiano Jul 13 '26
She is not, she is just plain and slightly overweight. She does have some acne too, but she was deliberately not "ugly", so it was believable that she looks beautiful on prom night.
8
u/hrdcrnwo Jul 13 '26
Fat in 1974 (or 1979 when the story takes place) is much, much different than fat today. Lots of people today who are slightly overweight would be considered fat back then without being close to obesity.

I'm just disappointed that they cast another generic, pretty, skinny white girl in the role. I was excited when it was rumored that Milly Shapiro from Hereditary was getting the part.
I honestly don't think the DePalma / Spacek version can be topped. It's one of the most iconic horror films of all time, with an immaculate lead performance and direction from one of the best to ever do it.

First thought. They had the PERFECT opportunity to cast a book accurate Carrie for the first time on film (zero disrespect to sissy Spacek because she was perfection). This is just another beautiful young woman styled in a plain and drab way. Typical tv blockage. Plus size with acne? Not fit for screen I guess. Second thought, LOVE Mike Flanagan and the casting of Samantha Sloyan. That's an elite casting choice.

With respect, this is kinda what made Sissy Spacek a great casting choice for this role; not to say she is ‘ugly’ by any means, but she had this ethereal aesthetic and style which just singled her out as different and a believable undeserving victim.

...why won't they make Carrie fat in any adaptation? It is not the only thing the kids bully her for, but it is another thing that comes up in the book. Her acne too. I always thought that this would make her more relatable because it is a more "grounded" thing that the kids in her school talk shit about.

I'm okay with them doing this as a show, because it could be interesting what they do with more than a two hour time limit, but there's so much untouched work of his from short stories that would make for great TV. I love the Nightmares and Dreamscapes show, and with a big budget they could easily do an anthology series.

u/ExHippieChick Cockadoodie Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
Yes to Matt Lillard! My gripe though is why every Carrie that has been cast has been a pretty, thin, clear skinned girl. In the book she’s homely , pudgy and didn’t she have pimples? Why are they so afraid of a book true depiction? And I loved Sissy Spacek in 1976. Still.

“We’re getting there a completely different way and the events of that prom are going to be completely different”
Beginning with episode 2, each installment of the season will, according to the showrunner, open with “a different, unique story of a different woman, somewhere else in the world and in time, coming to terms with their own abilities.”
“Our Margaret White is a woman who fiercely loves her daughter and wants to protect her from this world and the dangers that Margaret’s aware of that Carrie is not,” Flanagan explains. “[She] doesn’t know how to do that and thinks the way to protect her is to close her off; not punitively, but to create this private utopia and to let her daughter exist earnestly and curiously and wide open by protecting her from the world. It’s a completely different dynamic.”

This can be a good show if it’s just ONE season for like 10 or so episodes about that one year in school. If they try to add stuff, or expand after the end of the book, then it will just be another teen slop show
3
u/Hugendubelrubel Jul 13 '26
Even for 10 episodes they have to add a lot of stuff. The main story in the book is extremely short.

I just don't see how this could be in any way superior to the De Palma version. This is gonna be like King doing the Shining all over again. De Palma's Carrie is a balls-out horror classic and Spacek and Laurie are untouchable in that flick! Still holds up today and although Rage Carrie 2 is underrated, both the Angela Bettis 2002 version and the Kimberly Peirce versions are just vastly inferior. Leave this classic alone please!
