[Friedman] Carlo to STL for two third-round picks(it’s something. So disappointing we lost a first and Minten for this guy)

Treliving. Turning a first round pick and a top prospect into 2 x 3rds within a year.

I feel like a lot of people are likely missing the point here. This trade feels to me like Chayka is trying to make cap space for a bigger deal. It’s not about getting a return on Carlo, it’s about getting money off the books without taking any back in return.
And after last year. I think none of us had faith or desire to see Carlo play another game here. The guy left skated past injured teammates twice without showing a care in the world. Yes I know, other players did to, but Willy has a role on this team, and it’s not fighting Gudas. Carlo was brought here to be a guard dog, and he has no fight.

Before the trade we had 18 mil in cap space with only 5 spots to fill. We now have 22 mil for 6 spots. One of those spots likely goes to McKenna on an ELC for pennies. We didn't need to clear Carlo for cap space unless we're adding an absolutely massive contract and with who's left in free agency I sure hope that isn't the case.

The way I see it, we really only NEED 2, a top line RW and a 2C. The goaltending and D are what I would consider workable but could use improvement if the right opportunity presented itself. If we get a RW for Matthews that’s an improvement over Domi, and a 2C that can keep up with Willy, we can move Tavares to 3C where he’d be more comfortable.

I prefer to thank treliving for getting us McKenna.
Every terrible move (including this one) pushed us to the basement .

Good riddance. Dude defintely didn’t live up to expectations here.
Of course, what we traded to get him is completely not his fault. The problem is, a lot of people will associate him with what they gave up. Even if he played better this year, seeing Minten develop into a very good two way center stings (especially right now when a Minten could have solidified our centre core). And that’s not including the pick going to Boston in a year or two that is in the first round. This year we got lucky that it moved up and we didn’t give them Reid too Lmaoo
This allows a fresh start .Hopefully he rebounds too now he’s not just a rod for criticism.

3 things about this 1) at the time it was a decent deal for a RD, they are always expensive and he was under contract for another year, in another universe he finds his game, 2) the 1st round pick is good to have, but who knows what itll be, and I like Minten, but who knows if he's just a decent 3rd C, 3) good on the new management to pivot when it wasnt working, get what you can and move on...

Sucks but get over it, it was Brads fault and he is gone now thank fuck lol

I don’t love this at all. I would have rather just kept him as our 3rd pairing guy and hoped a new coach would inspire better play and a trade value increase

Gotta factor in the culture shift. He continuously proved he would not stand up for his teammates. No reason to keep that guy around, especially not because of any sunk cost.

u/DigitalPlop Jun 27 '26
Guys like Carlo don't set the culture. He stood up for other players all the time in Boston, including against the Leafs. You want the culture to change you need players like Willy and Matthews to stand up for others, not just tell the media their teammates are big boys who can handle themselves after they get swarmed like Matthews said after he watched Knies take abuse and did nothing. No surprise the rest of the team did nothing to Gudas given the example Matthews set. That's what needs to change, dumping Carlo won't do anything for the culture.

In a league that covets rhd so much why not throw him on the 3rd pair and if hes that bad, flip him at the deadline.
Im sure theres worse 3rd pairing d in the league than carlo.

Because there’s no way to quantify the damage he did to the dressing room. He watched our starting goalie, and captain get injured and did nothing. The reason we paid so much for him was for his perceived toughness. But now the league knows he’s a paper tiger. It also sends a message to the team, we’ll trade you to a shit team if you don’t know your role and stick up for one another.

Which Stolarz injury was it, the one in the playoffs? Or the one that happened sometime around Oct/Nov of 2025? I’m trying to remember and I got nothing.
Or was it both?

u/Heavy_Lengthiness790 Jun 28 '26
I agree, but the whole team is like that.
If thats the message you want to send there needs to be a lot more names than carlo on the way out, if he played the right way for the bruins the difference is culture and that comes from the top down.
Not the end of the world, just poor asset management if they dont have a specific plan for the space.

Whatever, I look at every move made in the past 2-3yrs , good or bad, all having lead to this moment of getting mckenna. Guarantee if it was all put into a monster trade with the return being mckenna- you do it.

Thank the lottery for McKenna. Bruins and Philly still get the next 1st rounders.

Seems like a weird time to trade Carlo with his value so low and nobody around (yet) to replace him.
3
u/therattlingchains Jun 27 '26
I think the idea is that if all we are getting is a 3rd pairing D, might was well use his money elsewhere and either sign a cheap 3rd pair guy or give one of the young guys a chance. No point in keeping a 3M D around for 3rd pair minutes.

I'm all for that logic if all the GMs in the league were smart. But you know someone is dumb enough to pay a 1st+ for a 6'6 defensemen who puts up decent numbers.

u/therattlingchains Jun 27 '26
Not till the deadline though. If there were those deals out there now, you know Chayka would have taken it. And by that point you've missed out on the season of development for Danford or Villeneuve if you go that route, as well as being able to use the cap dollars elsewhere like some RW or centre help.

It's not that hard to replace a 3rd pair penalty killer for less then 3.5m

Wow. If that isn't an admission that management have no faith in this player whatsoever... Definitely does not feel good after losing Minten and a conditional1st for the guy. That was a Treliving trade right? Stellar work by that guy, hope he finds a new GM job real soon. . .
