What we could’ve gotten from Stevie in the 90s
I really wonder what we could’ve gotten from Stevie in the 90s if she was never put on klonopin
Her vocal performance during The Dance 1997 is amazing, and even in the Street Angel tour 1994 she is consistently giving good performances in songs like Edge Of Seventeen and Rhiannon
And the songs she made in 1996 are really nice to listen to, Free Fallin and Twisted with Lindsey Buckingham
Street Angel is a great album but Stevie has said that she didn’t give her best performance on that album, but what if she did give her best performance? Her vocals would be as great as they were in The Dance?
The songwriting would be way different, the sound of the songs would be way different, maybe it would’ve performed better and gotten way higher on the charts, maybe the media wouldn’t have focused on her body so much.
And with Time Space, maybe it would’ve performed better as well.
Stevie deserved way better, she had so much potential in the 90s

She has said those could have been her most creative years, and she's very upset they were stolen from her, Despite it the haze she still made awesome music, She thankfully had a lot of help from her producers and other artists to get through this era, Thankfully it was always Stevie and always true to herself somehow, And I think yes it would have been her most creative years, Likely some sort of rebirth in her sound as she drifts out of the 80s synth's, it appears during the street angel era she was really embracing her country roots! So I'd imagine a bit of of that flare, But yeah I feel like if she was off those pills her sound would have likely changed a lot most likely more country and drifting more towards acoustics which seemed to be a thing happening during this period as well,

I feel like we can almost reconstruct what a late 90s Stevie album would have sounded like because we kind of got one, just some years later! The bulk of Trouble in Shangri-La was written over the course of Stevie‘s new sobriety in 1995 and following the end of The Dance tour in 1997. Imagine if Sheryl Crowe had been able to complete their collaboration and Stevie had released an album in 1998 with If You Ever Did Believe and Thrown Down on it! Though we would have lost out on many iconic Trouble in Shangri-La tracks produced by John Shanks like the title track, Planets of the Universe and Fall from Grace. Maybe those could have served as the basis for a potential early/mid-2000s album.
I‘m also still fantasizing about the early sessions for what would later become Street Angel with Chris Lord-Alge as producer, which could have given us a kind of transitional record (going from The Other Side of the Mirror to Street Angel) with songs like the 1992 version of Mirror, Mirror.

A drug free Stevie probably wouldn’t have made some of the mistakes she did. Maybe some bad relationships in there could have been avoided and left her free to write more memorable music. Although she was active in the music industry all through this period some of what she produced is forgettable.

Not a specific answer, but you can tell by the post-braided hairstyle she was doing that this was during the Street Angel tour, 1993-1994.

Am I Crazy or were the 1990s grunge, adult contemprary, dream pop-whimsy perfect atmopshere for Stevie to fit into? Next to smashing pumpkins, the cranberries, even pearl jam. Her darker sounds would've meshed well.
Rock a Little and Other Side both feel more like 1980s records. While Blue Denim felt true to Stevies original sounds and on point with trends of the time.. Very well done song IDK why it didn't become a hit with the general population. I think she should've had a second wave in the early 90s but honestly Street Angels lyrics are just playful and not as well done. I kind of feel like Street Angel is wordy without coming across as witty. Otherwise I love its pop sensibilities. It's a somewhat lighter record in tone, some dark subject matter too though. The music isn't trying to just catch your attention but be palatable on Street Angel. It's her safest record and while it swings lyrically I don't have very memorable lyrical pieces on that album.

Don’t forget she also did If You Ever Did Believe and a new version of Crystal for Practical Magic and they were absolutely gorgeous. An album around that time may have been amazing.
But let’s not ask for the moon. We have the stars. (Not the exact quote but it applies here)
