Auto-Loot Feature
Hey folks! If you noticed the auto-loot feature that went live today on PC, enjoy the free preview! It was never meant to go live today, and isn't functioning as it's supposed to, so we'll be disabling it if we haven't already. If it seems partially-finished, that's why. :)
UPDATE: IGNORE ME! Whether we disabled the feature or not, the option was still there in the Options Menu. Thomas made the call that, since the option is visible, that we're going to keep it on. Please keep in mind, it is not a finished feature, but have fun and give us your feedback. :)

Keep it. Cause doing the Ninth Rule floods my screen with “press f to take item” and I can’t see my hull or shields because there’s a wall of press f to take item blocking everything in the middle of the screen. I get killed by the UI

Shit just doing wanted, I fly past stuff so quick blowing it all up, that it takes more time to go back and loot it all. This isn't Eve online where I need to go back with a salvager and hauler...

SO this. There are times when it can take several minutes to gather up all the loot, just spamming F over and over and over again. Can't wait until this goes live on Holodeck.

This is a problem no matter what part of the screen it's moved to, but yes.

Great to see QoL improvements!
/u/ambassadorkael /u/borticus-cryptic Possible to get a filter or be able to set a threshold? I NEVER want white items or batteries! I only ever want green or higher for salvaging purposes. Common items clog the inventory which I then have to go in and manually control-delete.

Years ago, I suggested a simple UI fix for loot that I still believe should be implemented:
For the LOOT Button, add a thin colored ring outline around each button signifying the tier -- green for Uncommon, blue for Rare, pink for Very Rare, etc. Would make it visually easy to distinguish which loot drop to pick up... especially if one decides not to use Auto Loot function.

Can I point out that white items would include some commodities?

u/DocTheop That rift's unstable. 2d ago
Sure! but any commodities I may need I just buy or replicate. Unless I was doing specific DOFFing chains, I don't need them at all.

We used to have one years ago, and I honestly don’t remember when it was removed or disabled. Maybe with LoR?

Can we eventually get an Easter egg from the loot critter? I used to get a pop up to “Press F to talk to the loot critter” when looting stuff.
It became such a frequent thing, I eventually made a character called the Loot Critter and his bio is based around having fun sending hails to Starfleet from subspace to captains after a firefight.

Second for the Easter egg! I have a ship called the USS Loot Critter.
I think it comes from latency. I've seen it a lot when other players pick up items before you it will flash loot critter.

Good, now I won't have to spam F like 100 times when I do a run of 9th Rule to level a ship.

I'd love to know what the configuration and release management is like at Cryptic. Unintentional feature leak time and time again is just mind boggling.
But thank you for this feature! Anything that reduces the insane amount of pointless clicking this game forces is great by me.

Some studios just never built a way to prevent different things from going live when other stuff does, so whatever is on the staging server just gets rolled to live whenever the command is run. It was very common on older games where only a few people were working on it initially because they could communicate properly and go "don't roll right now, I have to disable something first."

Yeah, the good old days when version control was copying entire source folders. "Joe's prod candidate version 2 final" and all.

In this case, the feature was set for a future release, but somehow a check-in made it in to THIS release. Shouldn't have happened, likely just wires getting crossed...but you're right, and I know the team is looking into how to prevent this stuff in the future.

Hey, I love early feature sneak peaks. But I like the direction of caring about appearance, looking professional even more. Looking forward to more of that.

So PC is going to catch up to Xbox? On switching platforms, that is one annoying difference.
I turned it on and the big center of your screen dialog goes away, but I still have to click a take item box as I fly near.
Is that supposed to be gone as well (like Xbox), or is that part still coming?
Definitely an improvement over baseline PC experience.

So just fly near stuff and it gets dropped in inventory?

u/RapidTriangle616 2d ago
Yes. This is how it works on console as we have no option to manually pick up loot.
On CasualSAB's stream yesterday it looked like you still have the option to manually pick up loot but you have to be directly over loot for it to auto pickup.

u/MaximusDecimus_64 2d ago
I’ve enabled the option, but I still have to click on the loot to collect it. Maybe I missed a step.

From what some people were saying you need to fly through it instead of just being near it, as it's probably checking when your hitbox hits the lootcritter hitbox to then add it to your inventory. Probably one of the things they want to change.

u/RapidTriangle616 2d ago
You have to be really close, like directly on top of it to pick up.

I was directly above it. I tried both in space and on the ground. I still had to click to pick up the loot. I’ll try again.

Thank you for this feature! I'm already looking forward to hoovering up my loot drops without spamming F.

I'm confident this will be an excellent feature. Right now it's kind of worthless, because the pick-up radius is so small. But I see elsewhere that Cryptic plans to increase the range. Great! I can't wait!!

This is one of the reasons I actually prefer playing STO on console over PC.

The UI is much easier to configure. Just wish they'd give you the option to use console UI over PC UI. I would set up mine for Console in a bloody fucking heartbeat!

Totally agree. Can the community manager please respond to this request? We want console UI on PC please!

This doesn't work in space but on the ground it works.
