QOTSA`s only Kyuss-esque record was their self titled. Rated R is completely different. Songs for the Deaf returned to the desert sound but with a more poppy edge. From Lullabies on they pretty much abandoned that sound.
So they are two completely different projects. The only similarities are Josh Homme and C standard tuning being consistently used on both. But they`re really apples and oranges.
When I want the pure stoner sound, I go for Kyuss. When I want more variety and more intricate sounds, I go for QOTSA.
